In today’s film news roundup, AMC starts Artisan Films, Gravitas buys “Boy Genius,” Nesta Cooper gets cast opposite Salma Hayek and Rebel Road launches P12 as a distributor.
Marketing Move
AMC Theatres is launching a new program, AMC Artisan Films, as a programming-marketing effort to put a spotlight on character and narrative driven movies as an alternative to blockbusters.
“Because AMC is the industry’s top choice for blockbuster movies, many consumers don’t realize that we play more elevated and celebrated films than anyone else in North America,” said Elizabeth Frank, executive vice president of worldwide programming. “With the launch of AMC Artisan Films, we aim to expose more movie-goers to specialized films and increase their theatrical success.”
Frank said AMC is seeking earlier runs in platform releases while holding films longer in the theater to give audiences time to learn about them from other customers.

The AMC Theatres chain has announced a new initiative, AMC Artisan Films, that will spotlight a curated set of character and narrative-driven movies.
The goal of AMC Artisan Films is to make critically acclaimed films more accessible in a setting with quality amenities and technology. AMC will program specialized movies consistently in select locations throughout the United States, providing what the company terms “consistent and convenient showtimes” for the works.
The AMC Artisan Films program launches with the release of Yesterday, which opens nationwide on Friday. Upcoming films in the program include MidSommar, Blinded By The Light, The Peanut Butter Falcon, Downton Abbey, The Art of Self-Defense, Luce, The Kitchen and Where’d You Go, Bernadette.
The AMC Artisan Films seal will be granted to artist-driven films, the company claims, and will showcase expertise in writing, directing, acting and other components.

One Avengers: Endgame fan was so distraught by the Marvel epic that she had to go to the hospital.
The News International reports that a fan in China, 21-year-old Xiaoli, cried so hard at the end of the movie that she started hyperventilating. The moviegoer reportedly started having trouble breathing, so she was rushed to the hospital where she was given oxygen.

Avengers: Endgame will make history on its opening weekend in more ways than one.

“Avengers: Endgame” has its sights set on world domination.
Disney and Marvel’s upcoming superhero epic should light the box office on fire when it launches this weekend, with the hopes of setting domestic, international, and global records. In North America alone, “Avengers: Endgame” is expected to earn between $250 million and $268 million in its first three days of release. If it hits the higher part of that range it would qualify as the biggest domestic debut of all time, a distinction currently held by 2018’s “Avengers: Infinity War,” the precursor to “Endgame,” which launched with $257.7 million.
Advance ticket sales have been sky high for “Endgame,” so box office watchers are confident the grand conclusion to the current phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be one for the record books. At the very least, the opening weekend of “Endgame” will position itself as one of the best launches ever. Disney...

AMC announced today that it had sold more advance tickets for “Avengers: Endgame” than any other movie in history, and the theater chain has a plan to meet all that demand: keeping some locations open 24 hours a day. 17 locations won’t close once from Thursday night until Sunday, 29 will be open around the clock on Thursday and Friday, and 18 more will keep their doors open through either Thursday through Saturday or Friday Through Sunday.
Such a move is incredibly rare, though it has happened at least once before: in 1965, when the James Bond film “Thunderball” arrived in theaters. That film, adjusted for inflation, was a bigger hit than “The Dark Knight” 43 years later.

The 182-minute runtime of “Avengers: Endgame” is showing no signs of hindering the overwhelming audience demand for tickets, so much so that AMC and other major theater chains are keeping some of their locations open all night long this weekend.
On Monday, AMC announced that 64 of their cinemas in major markets have sold out so many of their screenings for “Endgame” that they will be keeping those locations open overnight for screenings. Of those locations, 17 will be kept open for more than 72 consecutive hours, from the time preview screenings begin for “Endgame” on Thursday evening all the way through Sunday night.
“AMC guests have already purchased more tickets to ‘Avengers: Endgame’ than we’ve ever sold in advance of a film’s release – and our first shows aren’t until Thursday evening,” said Elizabeth Frank, Evp Worldwide Programming for AMC.

When Avengers: Endgame tickets first went on sale near the start of this month, ticketing sites saw an overwhelming influx of visitors scrambling to book those first screenings, causing some sites to crash from the traffic. Now we’re just a few days away from seeing those same fans come pouring into theaters, but it seems that AMC is doing all they can to accommodate the impending rush.
According to Deadline, the theater chain has 29 of its cinemas scheduled to be open around-the-clock this Thursday through Friday. On top of that, 18 theaters are open nonstop Thursday through Saturday, while an additional 17 locations will keep going into Sunday, staying open for 72 hours straight.

AMC Entertainment President, Director and CEO Adam Aron had a nice 2018, hauling in $9.5 million. Aron’s all-in executive compensation was up just over 27 percent from 2017.
While Aron’s salary remained flat at $1.1 million, it was a big increase in his non-equity incentive plan compensation that accounted for the jump. His 2017 take in that executive compensation category was *just* $726,000. Last year, the movie-theater chain’s boss recognized $2.882 million under the same heading.
Though $9.5 million is a nice increase from the prior year’s $7.4 million, it actually does not represent Aron’s best year in recent memory. Back in 2016, Aron posted executive compensation of $10.9 million thanks mostly to a $4.5 million bonus.

#GoldOpen, the Asian community movement that bought out theaters for showings of “Crazy Rich Asians,” has announced a new partnership with AMC Theaters.
The collaboration aims to streamline group movie-going, theater buyouts, bulk regular-price ticket purchasing, and more through a ticket buying system that includes a dedicated ticketing web page, purchasing support, and special events throughout the year. The We Company’s Meetup.com and Facebook Groups will also allow organizers to more easily distribute tickets, coordinate viewings, and meet other supporters.
In August, to support “Crazy Rich Asians,” the first major studio film with a majority Asian cast, #GoldOpen creators spread the word on social media that they were buying out theaters to draw a record box office. The film has since garnered over $238 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing romantic comedy in the last decade.
Director @jonmchu: "Crazy Rich Asians is more than just a movie, it's a movement.

While Thursday night is typically preview night for any major wide release, Warner Bros./Village Roadshow’s Ocean’s 8 is going a night early on Wednesday in AMC Theatres for a special “Girls’ Night Out.” AMC Patrons can purchase tickets to watch the movie two days in advance before its opening this Friday.
Though it’s “Girl’s Night Out,” everyone is welcome to attend and buy tickets. Last year, Alamo Drafthouse got in a bit of a local discriminatory pickle in Austin when they tried to, with all good intentions, hold female-only screenings for Warner Bros.’ Wonder Woman. Ocean’s 8, a gender reversal reboot of the famous Rat Pack 1960s and early millennial George Clooney-Brad Pitt Ocean’s Eleven heist pics, is eyeing an opening in the $30Ms range this weekend with a shot of possibly topping $40M.

It’s taken just 72 hours for Avengers: Infinity War to earn its status as a juggernaut among advance ticket sales.
Ever since they went on sale this past weekend – March 16th, to be specific – Infinity War has completely obliterated AMC records.
