This is a slow weekend in an already slow summer movie season, so it’s the perfect time to catch up with spring’s best horror release and a handful of new indies that are debuting on digital platforms.
The contender to watch this week: “The First Omen“
At a time when many franchises are slowly cratering, “The First Omen” has turned out to be one of 2024’s biggest surprises. Arkasha Stevenson‘s handsome and terrifying prequel depicts the events right before Demian, the Og Antichrist, came around. If that sounds unnecessary, it is — and yet the film’s quality absolutely justifies its existence. “The First Omen” is still playing in a smattering of theaters, having grossed $53.7 worldwide, but now it’s available for $19.99 on VOD.
Other contenders:
“Gasoline Rainbow”: Mubi is having a major year, with two buzzy Cannes titles — “The Substance” and “The Girl with the Needle...

It’s not always easy to find out which movies hit theaters each week, especially after the Hollywood strikes led to many release date changes. With the WGA and actors strikes resolved and summer blockbusters starting to roll in, May and June are filled with both big budget flicks and new indie releases.
Premiering May 31 is IFC’s “In a Violent Nature,” which follows a vengeful spirit’s bloody journey through the woods to retrieve his 60-year-old corpse starring Ry Barrett, Andrea Pavlovic, Cameron Love and Reece Presley. Also hitting theaters is “Summer Camp,” a comedy about three childhood friends who attempt to recapture their memories spent together at summer camp starring Kathy Bates, Diane Keaton, Alfre Woodard and Beverly D’Angelo. Two films getting limited releases this week are Disney’s “Young Woman and the Sea,” a biopic about Trudy Ederle, the first woman to swim the English Channel starring Daisy Ridley,...

"He created magic with this camera." Greenwich Ent. has revealed an official trailer for a documentary film titled Hidden Master: The Legacy of George Platt Lynes, made by an art director turned filmmaker named Sam Shahid. This photography docu is an intimate look at pioneering artist George Platt Lynes, who took radically explicit photographs of the male nude. It reveals Lynes' gifted eye for the male form, his long-term friendships with Gertrude Stein & Alfred Kinsey, and also his lasting influence as one of the first openly gay American artists. From visionary art director Sam Shahid, Hidden Master features a stunning collection of photography from the 1930s-50s, uncovering the life of Lynes less known: his gifted eye for the male form, his friendships, and his enduring effect as one of the first openly gay American artists. Similar to the other doc about the other great photographer Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures.
