2001 gets a bad modernization
24 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I just saw this movie last night and everything about it was just mediocre. The acting, the story, and special effects. Not to mention how terrible the soundtrack was. However, the worst part about this movie was how its plot surrounding the original inhabitants of MArs was completely stolen from 2001. 2001 was an amazing sci-fi film because it really made you think about everything u were seeing. Mission to Mars tries really hard to take this and modernize it but instead it just made me laugh.Everything from the aliens prestine white world to the intergalactic travel to the seeding of Earth was stolen from a masterpiece, which really is one of the greatest sins in film-making.

Indiana Jones and the Close Encounters of the Third Kind
24 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Ever since I heard about the possible release of new Indiana Jones film I was bursting with excitement and skepticism. THe original trilogy are some of my favorite movies of all time, and I still hold an opinion that Raiders of the Lost ARk is the best action picture of all time. However I was skeptical about how a new film would be pulled off. It wasn't Indy's age that worried me seeing as I have a very high respect for Harrison Ford, but I was worried about how George Lucas and Steven Spielberg might go about this new film. My worries were unfounded.

The first thing people need to realize about the Kingdom of the Crystal SKull and all the Indiana Jones films is that they are and always will be period films. The idea for Indiana Jones was originally based upon 1930's serials, and the first 3 did good for that time period. However, Lucas and Spielberg both realized that due to Harrisons advancing age that the film needed to be place further into the future. (the 1950's) However, adventure serials weren't part of the film mainstream at the time. And Sci-fi films were. This is why Kingdom of the Crystal Skull truly ascends. The filmmakers made a B movie sci-fi fitting of the period, but also kept its original Indy flair. All the requirements for a good indy movie are kept. (the action pieces, the battles between Indy and a world power be it Russians or Nazis, the creatures, and the encounters with super natural.) Those who find the alien aspect of this film to be out of place only need to look at Lucas's and Spielberg's reasoning. (see above) And if they find the story of the aliens unrealistic then they honestly need to rewatch the original movies seeing as their is nothing any more unreal in this film then there were in the previous films. 10/10 Easily one of the best Indy films.

Good Characters but Poor Writing
21 December 2007
National Treasure 2 the Book of Secrets is for the most part a great action adventure film and keeps you enthralled with its twisting corridors, deadly traps, strange conspiracies, and compelling characters. For the most part I actually sat at the edge of my seat wondering where the next clue would take us. However, the movie had one glaring mistake, the writing. First off were lead to believe that Ben's parents had been divorced for 32 years yet in several hours after being reunited they begin acting like they were friends for centuries. The other complaints (Spoilers) are that the city of gold the characters are after is claimed to be built by the Olmecs yet Olmecs were a South American Civilization yet the city was found in North Dakota. Third, why build an underground city of gold in the first place. The idea is basically that the Olmecs carried hundreds of tons of golds across thousands of miles and built an underground city filled with unrealistically intricate traps. Just thinking about that is ludicrous. Fourth, the villain of the movie wants to cause so much danger just because he wants to be remembered. Odd motives to say the least. So in the end the movie despite some major writing mistakes was actually quiet enjoyable and I would recommend it to anyone interested in a good action adventure flick, who doesn't care about character motives or historical accuracy.

Transformers (2007)

WAY More Then Meets The Eye
21 August 2007
There have been several movies that have changed my idea of thinking of the film business. King Kong and Lord of the Rings being some of them. Transformers is one of those movies, but for a different reason. When I saw the teaser trailer at Pirates of the Caribbean last year I laughed. The idea seemed absurd, but the finished product was spectacular. I not only was blown away by the action, but i was amazed at how awesome Michael Bay made a movie about a toy aimed for 8 year olds (sorry Transformers fans.) The humor was genuinely laughable. The characters (for the most part) were well written and the special effects were ground breaking. Transformers deserves its 8 out of ten. I want to give it higher but if it did i would be putting this movie with the likes of The Godfather or Return of the King and that just doesn't seem to fit.
