Carla, after giving birth to Latimore's baby, becomes a famous nightclub singer. Time passes and Ferzetti, the jewel thief, returns and attempts to rape Carla, but she shoots him dead. At her murder trial, Latimore defends her again, and also learns he is the father of her child, and she only left him because of his mother's interference. She is once again acquitted, and Carla and Latimore move on, sans his mother.

Feeling the heat, the couple runs away from Venice. Having taken shelter in Torino, they are traced by the inquisitor, who pretending to feel remorse, has them return to Venice. But while they are on the road, Foscarini's hired assassins murder Alessandro. As for Ortensia she is taken back to her father's home by force.
