- John Hanson (Conrad Nagel) is a bank teller and invests in stocks. He and his best friend (another bank teller) Phil Wilson (Robert Ames) live at a boarding house run by his Swedish fiance's aunt, Mrs. Larson (Bodil Rosing). While Phil lives to chase girls, John spends all his free time studying for the bar exam. He wants to be a successful lawyer and build a dream home and future for his fiance, Helga Larson (Betty Compson). But all work and no play makes John a dull boy, and Helga delights in Phil taking her out to shows to relieve her boredom. Months pass and John realizes the pal he loved stole the girl he loved! Phil reassures John he is not interested in her. John's stocks dive and threatened with financial ruin, he desperately steals ten grand to pay his broker, from the bank til of Phil's station. Police lieutenant Tom Rooney (Robert Emmett O'Connor) catches Phil leaving town with a one way ticket to Rio, trying to ditch Helga who thinks Phil will marry her. The bank examiner calls in Phil to explain the missing ten grand and John silently watches him take the bum rap and sentence. Revenge is fleeting however, as a marriage, son, home and money can't give him Helga's true love that she keeps for Phil. Five years later Phil escapes from Sing Sing and enters John and Helga's beautiful home, telling her he never intended to marry her. Hurt and double-crossed by the cad, she realizes her John the valiant lover. But is it too late? Guilt ridden, John intends to tell Rooney the truth and incriminate himself to set free Helga's true love so she can finally be happy, and officer Rooney is knocking at the front door...

But as the year progresses, Alan falls in love with Beverly, befriends Squint and decides he doesn't want to die. But how can he convince North to allow a 100 grand to slip through his fingers?

The burglar shoots O'Hara, who has rushed to his friend's aid, and, with his last breath he asks Sol to take care of Shandy. When Shandy arrives, Sol immediately makes him a member of the family, which also consists of a very mischievous motherless boy named Joey Bloom, whose pursuits consist of stealing oranges from fruit-dealer Tony, and playing hookey from school. Tom Varney, the young beat cop, is in love with Ruth Sneider, whose mother runs a Cleaning and Dyeling establishment. Ruth, however, is momentarily dazed with worthless Dave Haller, whose flashy clothes and snappy car indicates easy money. Shandy likes to visit Dave's apartment and listen to the radio. Dave drops and breaks a bottle of liquid, tells Shandy it is furniture polish and tells him not to mention the incident. Unknown to Dave, Shandy takes a bottle of it home. Polishing the wood on the cash drawer with the liquid, Shandy notes that one of the six dollars he had placed there from a sale is missing, immediately suspects Joey and sets out to find him. Tom drops by the shop and notices that the polish has taken the finish off of the wood, sniffs the contents of the "polish" bottle, takes a taste and discovers it is bootleg gin. Shandy returns and tells Tom where he acquired the bottle. Tom arrests Dave and Ruth thinks it is out of jealousy. Shandy pawns a harp his mother had left him to replace the dollar Joey had stolen. Shandy goes out in a rainstorm to try and raise money to repay Tony for a window Joey has broken, and becomes gravely ill from the exposure and is on the brink of death.

Simultaneously, Herbert returns with help; he takes all the credit and makes Jim look like a coward. Later, Jim proves his courage when he saves Polly and overpowers Cragg, now an escaped convict. Herbert bows to Jim and returns to college.
- Mona Stewart, madcap, spoiled daughter of a wealthy man, becomes upset when she learns that her father is engaged to a woman she hates. She runs away, via various modes of transportation, and hires an ex-con, David Mannering, to drive her around as she eludes the all-out search conducted by her father and her fiancée, Ronnie Van Zandt. A romance is blossoming until her chauffeur is arrested for the murder of a crime-syndicate boss.
- There is this old concertmaster of the Cosmopolitian Orchestra and he is about to realize his life-long ambition of appearing as a soloist with the orchestra, when an accident robs him of use of his right hand. His children, upon learning of his misfortune, immediately desert him knowing he will no longer provide them with money. So Adolph Greig sinks lower and lower and becomes a street beggar, too proud to ask for help from his friends and unable to find his son or daughter. One night, standing in front of the concert hall, he sinks to the street from hunger and fatigue. He is picked up by two men associated with the orchestra, Mancini and Rozzini, and they take him to Rozzini's and they develop a plan whereby they will set up Greig in a next-door studio where he can give violin lessons. A young violin genius named Carl Rupert shows up and, with the aid of Mancini and Rozzini, Greig starts the boy off on a brilliant career. Or, what promised to be a brilliant career until his long-lost mother shows up.
