The sultan then decides to send Karl XII a princess to marry him, to get him out of the country (a bride for a bribe). The two Swedish soldiers Lagercrona and Kruus are to escort the princess. They experience many different adventures on their way to Bender, namely because other Swedish soldiers and agents try to stop them from ever reaching the village, because they don't want Karl XII to leave Turkey. After their long adventure to get there and a few misunderstandings, the famous "kalabalik" of Bender, where the Turks decide to drive Karl XII out of Turkey by force, begins.

At that time, a beautiful farmer's wife makes a pact with the devil: if he helps the men survive the excessive toil imposed by a tyrannical knight, she will give him a newborn baby. When the time comes to collect the child, the wife has the baby baptised right after birth, and the devil is foiled. In revenge, he sends a black spider into the village to spread pestilence and death.
- At the end of WWII a German soldier who had often been ordered to execute women and children deserts and tries to find a hiding place in his native village. Almost immediately the entire village is evacuated, except for the deserter and a French girl who is a compulsive worker. Believing that the Nazi regime is gone forever they tear down all Nazi placards. The girl also steals civilian clothes for the soldier from her employer. But the next day the Germans are back and determined to find out who took away the placards. The employer dares not report the girl for fear that he would also be punished. When the deserter understands that there is no refuge and that his parents and younger sister will be murdered if the Germans find him, he shoots himself. Fifteen years later when a short-time fun-fair is built the deserter's corpse turns up, but even his parents prefer to forget what happened and to let the corpse remain unidentified.

The children Hansli and his friend Ludmila take the cow to their heart. Ludmila even lends her name to the animal. Some time later Josef falls from a mountain and is unable to work for a long time. So a decision is made that cow Ludmila which produces no milk has to be slaughtered. To prevent it, Hansli takes her secretly to an alpine pasture. A miracle happens: Cow Ludmila produces more milk than any other cow after eating a special herb. The villagers ascribe this to the wooden statue of virgin Mary which Josef had made out of a tree root. He can thus sell it to a fair price.

Der Künstler heiratet die Tochter des Staatsanwalts, der Staatsanwalt wird zum Oberstaatsanwalt befördert, aber nach Ostpreußen versetzt (was für Rheinländer fast wie eine Verbannung nach Sibirien war).
