- A murder during a game of charades at a society party leads the police to begin the hunt through the guest list for a motive and culprit.

- Plantation owner William Hawkes (David Newell) doesn't approve of the fact that most of the white men on the island have married, or are living with native girls. Hawkes goes to San Francisco for a planter's convention and, when he returns, brings back society girl Lucille Cheney (Virginia Cherrill) as his wife. Leilana is heart-broken, while Lucille becomes quickly bored with her husband and Hawaii. Her boredom ends when Chandler Morris (Hardie Albright) sails into port on his yacht and he and Lucille begin an affair. Hawks drinks to forget. He catches Lucille and Chandler together and a fight ensues, Lucille, in an effort, to save her lover throws a kerosene lamp into the ripe sugar cane and fire spreads in all directions.

She has written off her fiancé and has learned quickly that "Dutch Mike" Lutze is not to be trusted in any way. That leaves Jim Thorne, the only man who has ever bested Lutze in anything and, while Jim is an adventurer and pirate-at-heart, he knows how to be a gentleman, especially to the only white woman in town or on the island. Lutze is offended. They play poker for a plantation, Ellen, and all the pearls in the Pacific; the loser gets Poppi. Lutz has a marked deck of cards.
- Four "Picture Brides" from New Orleans arrive in the Brazilian jungle on a riverboat, brought there to marry workers at Lottagrasso, a remote mining site of the Standard Diamond Mines. On the same boat with the "mail-order" brides (Americans Mame Smith and Flo Lane, and Gwen from England and Lena from Europe) is Mary Lee, an innocent, frightened girl who has come to see the mine's brutal supervisor, von Luden, about a job. Knowing von Luden's inhuman reputation, Mame transfers the photo assigning her to Dave Hart to Mary's identification card. Castro, the mail-runner, delivers a letter to von Luden informing him that his partner Hart is wanted in the United States on an embezzlement charge. To protect Mary, Mame presents herself as the job applicant while Mary is introduced to Dave and his fellow supervisors--Peter, Joe, and Bill--as a bride applicant. Dave rescues Mary from a lustful, brutish attack by von Luden. Pretty Mataeo Rogers, half-breed daughter of the camp's drunken doctor, is celebrating her 18th birthday and is lured to von Luden's jungle castle. Later, natives find her body in the swamp. Detectives Steve and Al arrive to extradite Dave.

His friend, Robert Rand, has has fallen for Zenobia, a clerk at Chan Tow Ling;s curio shop. Dawn tells Robert that their live would be in peril if he tries to take Zenobia away from Chinatown. That night, Robert breaks into the shop's cellar where he hears strange music and voices, and sees a weird ceremony in which (the mesmerized) Zenobia officiates as a priestess. Robert is captured by the worshipers. Dawn tracks the sinister "Order of the Black Rober" but can not find a trace of Robert, Zenobia or the cultists.
- Three men, each on his individual quest, meet at a deserted cabin and take the assumed names of Ace, King, and Jack. They then team up to try to bring water to a dried-up town.

Seth rushes to the cantina where Sheriff Rankin is drinking, and the sheriff posts a reward for the capture of El Malo. El Malo informs his men of the reward. The bandit and his sidekick Pedro visit the cantina where Pedro resumes a former acquaintance with Dolores, while El Malo has his attention directed to a tango being performed by Carmita. El Malo pushes her dancing partner aside and finishes the dance with Carmita. Since Seth's description of him is inaccurate, "El May" visits the sheriff and promises to deliver the wanted bandit to the cantina the following night. The next morning, El Malo and Pedro depart and, halting their horses on a hill, they view the stagecoach being held up by a trio of outlaws. They follow the outlaws to their hideout, where they discover the leader is the trusted town-mayor Seth. El Malo tells him to be in the cantina that night. Then things get involved, including the wrath of the displaced tango partner. El Malo handles it all without breaking a sweat.
- A crazed scientist needs primates to conduct experiments to prove his own theory of evolution, so he organizes an expedition into the jungles of Borneo to capture the animals he needs.

They hire on at the Lund ranch and when her cattle are rustled and she is kidnaped they follow the trail, It's Lenahan and his gang and Reb soon finds himself a prisoner.
- Verdugo found a young boy on the desert and raised him as his son. Now a grown man, Dan is framed for a stagecoach robbery by Brent, the same man who shot his father and tried to take him and his mother away 20 years earlier.

Carmencita and Ricardo, whom Jack thinks are sweethearts, are with the gang but help Jack escape.They tell him they are undercover agents working for the Mexican government to apprehend the smuggling gang. With Jack's help, their mission is accomplished and Jack discovers Buck to be the killer of his father. He also happily discovers that Ricardo is Carmencita's brother and not her sweetheart.
- Bill travels to a new state after the outlaw Scarface saves him from a lynch mob. There he takes a job on the Barton ranch and joins in the fight against gang leader Larkin. Finding a wounded Scarface he helps him recover. Arrested by Larkin's stooge Sheriff, and with another lynch mob after him, he once again needs Scarface's help.

- Lillian Stevens and her cousin, Ruth, return home from college and Lillian receives a cold reception from her too-busy-to-bother parents; her father, Dr. Richard Stevens, is a professional reformer and has a radio broadcast to make, and her mother, Alice, is planning a bridge party and sends Lillian off to her cousin's home for dinner. But Margie, a school friend, telephones Ruth to invite her to go night-clubbing with two boys. Ruth declines but Lillian hops on board. She meets Gerald Winthrop. She falls for Gerald Winthrop. Gerald skids his car into a deep rut. Gerald says he can't move the car and, since it is raining, they should seek shelter in a nearby motel/tourist court. They do...and stay all night. But Gerald is something of a cad and a bounder, and he soon takes up with Ruth. The fickle Gerald soon proposes to Ruth. This is about the time that Lillian discovers has left her with impending-child. This is not a good situation.
- A young couple making plans to elope are overheard by a jewel thief, who sees a chance to turn the situation to his advantage.
- The Dales need money for their sick mother and Bart Travis, having found gold, says he will provide it. Duke Remsden learns of the strike and waylays Buzz Dale as he tries to record Bart's deed. Dressed as Bart, Duke kills and robs a man. With the Sheriff after Bart, Buzz escapes capture, finds the clothes worn to impersonate Bart, and heads for the Sheriff.
- Cattleman Benson finds Mildred and her brother George living in one of his cabins and their sheep are on his land. Attracted to Mildred, he not only lets her stay, he deeds part of his land to her. This leads to trouble with the other cattlemen.
- An American army officer, Kenneth Holbert, is after a Mexican bandit, El Zorro, who he doesn't know is his long-lost twin brother. Dorothy Holbert has a hard time figuring out which is which, especially since Romanian native Renaldo uses the same accent for both brothers.
- Over the objections of her father (Henry B. Wathall) Doris Maynard (Barbara Kent) elopes with family chauffeur Dan Simmons (Eddie Phillips). Simmons pawns her jewels, forges her father's name on a bank note and leaves Doris a note to go home and let her father support her. A year or two later, Doris meets and falls in love with and marries Donald Thorne (Monte Blue), a crusading district attorney. Her father advises her to let the past remain buried and unrevealed. A campaign for re-election is on and Thorne has the machine organization in despair. Denman (Dewey Robinson), the machine head, is desperate and gets hold of Manners (William V. Mong), a former butler in Thorne's home who had been fired by Doris for petty theft. Manners agrees to plant some manufactured evidence in Thorne's home to discredit him. Manners, with Thorne out of town and the servants off, has no problem entering the Thorne residence. Neither does Simmons who breaks in upstairs with intentions of blackmailing Doris about her past. Downstairs, Manners is placing the framed evidence in a secret drawer of the library table when he discovers a gun that Thorne had given Doris for protection. He hears voices upstairs, investigates and overhears Simmons making his blackmail demands of Doris. She gives him her money and jewels and he departs, followed by Manners, who kills Simmons and throws the gun in the bushes. An investigation, spurred by Denman, reveals the murdered man was Mrs. Donald Thorne's unrevealed ex-husband and the murder weapon the gun Thorne had left for Doris' protection. None of this information bodes well for Thorne's re-election campaign.
