Stella is cured by a great physician, and John declares his love for her. John's wife, released from jail, learns of his devotion to Stella and tells her that John is not free to love her. Unity, who has become devoted to John, kills his wife and then takes her own life. John comes to realize that Stella loves Herold and gives his blessing to their marriage.
- A gang of blackmailers sends a cripple to San Francisco to expose a banker they have been blackmailing. However, the cripple meets and falls in love with the banker's daughter.
- A ship carrying a touring circus troupe sinks at sea, and Lorraine, a young girl, is washed up on a deserted island. Her only companion is a gorilla from the circus, Bimi, who raises her as its own. Several years later Lorraine's wealthy grandfather, who has hired a psychic to help find her, is led by the psychic to Lorraine's island, and she and Bimi are taken back to "civiliation" in San Francisco, but things don't work out exactly as planned.
- Following a reversal in the Graham family fortune, a childhood love affair between Gordon Graham and Marjorie Miller is frustrated by the socially ambitious Mrs. Miller. After he graduates from college, Gordon marries Virginia and has a son with her. Four years later, Virginia is so eager to return to work that accepts her mother-in-law's offer to live with them and care for Sonny. However, Virginia soon becomes jealous of Mrs. Graham for stealing her child's affections, and gives her husband an ultimatum that either she or his mother must go. In the end, Virginia leaves with Sonny and then marries Stoneman, her employer, but when he is imprisoned on embezzlement charges, she is left destitute. Years later, Sonny and his wife Marjorie take Virginia into their home, but in a repeat of family history, Marjorie soon becomes jealous of Virginia. When the couple move to Paris, Virginia decides to pass out of their lives. While attending an architectural convention in Paris, Gordon and Marjorie (now his wife) are recognized by the haggard woman, but she dies in the street before she can reach them.

Learning that he had been adopted from a foundling asylum in infancy, Bob decides to go to New York to see if he cannot learn his real name, which he understands begins with "Mor." He disguises himself and enters many homes, attired in evening clothes, and is soon known to the police as "The Midnight Man." In the meantime he has come into contact with members of the White Circle gang, and has many close physical encounters with them.
- Rex the wonder horse's owner is murdered by Joe Regan, the leader of a band of smugglers. RCMP Sgt. Jack Gordon has been sent to capture the villain. Rex vows vengeance on Regan and helps Gordon capture him.
- Ray Sturgis, leader of the fashionable Long Island jazz set, is engaged to "Egypt" Hagen, an up-to-date girl in every respect. Egypt is arrested at a roadhouse raid, and at her mother's bidding, the Reverend Norman Lodge arranges for her freedom. At a fancy-dress ball, when Ray wears a costume made of newspaper headlines concerning her arrest, Egypt is offended. Seen constantly in the company of Reverend Lodge, her reputation causes church people to take up the matter with the bishop. Leaving the country club, Egypt goes to the Lodge home and hides behind the door when the bishop arrives; Reverend Lodge wants to marry her, and they admit their love; but humiliation causes her to leave with Sturgis that night. Their yacht is wrecked, but Lodge and the bishop follow and rescue Egypt, though Sturgis is drowned. The bishop, realizing the depth of their love, consents to marry them.
- Wealthy bachelor Jimmy Norton, engaged to a gold digger, lies his way out of a speeding ticket by claiming to be on his way to visit his daughter at the Children's Hospital. The policeman gives him an escort to the hospital. There runaway orphan Pudge attaches herself to Jimmy, the sort of daddy she has always dreamed of having. In order to keep up the lie, Jimmy must pretend that Pudge is his daughter while hiding her from his fiancée.
- In 1919, Chester Binney, a wounded World War I veteran, is discharged from the U.S. Army in Los Angeles, and returns to his hometown. There he is feted by his pre-war employer, George Simmons, who hopes to strike up a romance between his daughter Ethel, and Chester. However, for social reasons, Chester's accomplishments-line is a bit "thin," so George builds him a hectic past that involves movie-vamp Rita Ralti. This is news to Rita and her manager, who have come to town to promote her latest film.
- Reformed criminal Boston Blackie is outraged when a judge refuses to grant a pardon for a dying friend. He hires Norine, his now-dead friend's daughter, to get to the judge through his son Rudy. However, things don't work out quite as Blackie had planned.
- Jack De Quincy, an American graduate of Oxford, is still considered a wastrel playboy by his father, owner of a giant lumber company in the American northwest. To prove he is a man his father sends him there to take charge of a large lumber camp, filled with brawny he-men who spend their time drinking, gambling and brawling when not cutting timber. Once there, Jack establishes himself by winning a fight against "Dum-Dum" Pete, the toughest man in those parts. Along the way he sees to it that a needed operation is performed on the camp's mascot, a crippled young boy, and saves his sweetheart, Marie O'Nei, that daughter of a rival lumber company, from drowning in the river when the spring thaw causes an ice-break flood.
- An inventor adds new innovations to Baker Airplane Company's planes, inventions coveted by the owners of a rival company. The masked and mysterious airman, known only as Pilot X, makes plans to steal the inventions for his own purposes. The perils are fast and furious as the owner of the airplane company, aided by his aviatrix fiancee, find themselves in constant danger, both on land and in the air.
- A woman goes to a sideshow fortune-teller to have her fortune told, and is astonished when the man looks into his crystal ball and goes into great detail about events in her past that few people ever knew about. Shaken, she leaves and later tells her girlfriend about the incident. The girlfriend insists that she invite the fortune-teller to a party they're having at her house. What the woman doesn't realize is that the "fortune-teller" is actually the ex-husband she abandoned years ago, when she took their daughter and ran off with her lover. When the "charlatan" is invited to the party, he sees an opportunity to take his revenge on his faithless ex-wife.
- Bob Shaw, the sheriff of Rimrock, and his deputies raid a gambling joint suspected of serving bootleg liquor, but the owner manages to hide the contraband.
- Bob Langdon, a young Pony Express rider, is given an appointment to West Point, but is forced to leave the academy as the result of political intrigue stirred up by enemies of his friend, General George A. Custer. Bob returns to the west and is made a scout for Custer's 7th Cavalry. At the Battle of Little Big Horn, Custer sends Bob with a message for aid, and Bob becomes the only survivor of the battle.
- A young Jewish woman is forced to either give herself to a Russian officer or watch her village burn.
- David Darby and his younger brother Ross are both members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Ross is accused of murdering Slip Martin, but David doesn't believe his brother committed the murder and, not wanting to see him executed, takes the blame himself. However, information surfaces that seems to indicate Ross might have indeed killed Martin, and also that dance-hall girl Mary Malcolm knows who actually did commit the murder.
- An English nobleman, known only as Victor, arrives in Algiers and joins the French Foreign Legion as a private without revealing his true identity. He attracts and is loved by Cigarette, a French-Arab girl and "daughter of the regiment," but does not return her attentions. She is at first furious, and when she learns Victor's past and the name of his true love she goes to the Princess Corona with the intention of killing her. But Cigarette's hate turns to admiration, and she reveals Victor's identity to the princess. Learning of Sheik Ben Ali Hammed's plots against Victor and Algiers, she gives evidence that clears him of treason, makes a wild ride ahead of the Arabs to warn the troops, and dies in Victor's arms after shielding him from the executioner's bullet.
- Writer James Langham and his wealthy wife, Claudia, quarrel and are divorced. Claudia moves into a posh hotel and renews her acquaintance with Alphonse Marsac, an old European friend with an eye on her fortune. Alone in the family mansion, James goes to an agency and rents a "wife" to be his daytime companion and housekeeper. Claudia finds them together one evening, and, suspecting the worst of an innocent relationship, impulsively informs Alphonse that she will marry him. James goes after her, sweeps her from a moving train, and marries her for the second time.
