- Launched in 2018, the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project will come to fruition in October 2021: the 1,230 kilometers of pipes built under the Baltic Sea are complete. Connecting the village of Bolshoi Kuziomkino in Russia to the city of Lubmin in Germany, the pipeline follows the route of its big brother, Nord Stream 1, which has been operating since 2012. Two months later, just as the pipeline was about to be inaugurated, Germany warns that the pipeline will not be approved if the escalation with Ukraine escalates. In February 2022, Europe's major gas supplier invaded its neighbor, and Chancellor Olaf Scholz halted the pipeline's certification process as part of the sanctions against Russia.
- For over 25 years, the BBC gave voice to the silenced people of East Germany by inviting them to secretly write in to a radio programme called Letters without Signature. Broadcast on the BBC's German Service, the programme gave voice to ordinary East German citizens who wrote about life under the repressive communist regime. On the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, this documentary explores an unknown story of the Cold War. It looks at the impact of the Letters without Signature series on both the letter writers in East Germany - who faced jail if discovered - and the producers of the show in London, particularly its mysterious presenter, Austin Harrison. Using never-before-seen Stasi files and recordings, London Calling: Cold War Letters documents the tit-for-tat propaganda war between the Stasi and BBC. It reveals a fascinating world of spies, secret state subterfuge and individual acts of bravery.
- About 3,500 years old, the Ebers papyrus is considered the oldest medical treatise in the world. When, in 1873, the German Egyptologist Georg Ebers ventured down the Nile to find it in Luxor - the ancient Thebes, capital of the Pharaohs - the existence of the precious document was still only a rumor. Finally delivered to the public in 1875 and preserved since then in the University Library of Leipzig, this scroll, more than 18 meters long, contains some 877 ancient remedies to treat hair loss, coughs, eye and heart ailments or digestive problems. Mixing medicine and magic, can this knowledge, transmitted from generation to generation and strictly reserved for a restricted elite in ancient Egypt, prove useful in the 21st century?
- What was it like to grow up in East Germany in the nineties and noughties? The two-part documentary tells a chapter that has so far been missing from the collective memory of the post-reunification period. And this despite the fact that the sometimes traumatic experiences of the young people in the East continue to shape their lives to this day.
