Road to the Oscars '06 CATEGORIES
Best Actress

And The Winner Is: Reese Witherspoon, Walk the Line

Our Pick Was: Reese Witherspoon, Walk the Line

The buzz

Walk the Line Does Reese Witherspoon really have the Best Actress Oscar locked up? Her fantastic performance as June Carter Cash in Walk the Line has nabbed her a majority of critics' awards, as well as a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild award. Everyone loves Reese, her movie's a solid hit, and if past history is any indicator, she has an edge by being beautiful and young, like most of the recent winners in this category.

Still, there's a bit of sniping in the air when it comes to Ms. Witherspoon. Some have said that, having appeared less than graceful (and grateful) in her televised acceptance speeches, she's "failed" her Oscar auditions. Others say that a much better performance was given by Felicity Huffman, who's grabbed a few awards for her gender-bending role in Transamerica and has been riding waves of publicity for her Emmy win for Desperate Housewives. To that, we ask, has anyone actually seen Transamerica? Granted, we love ourselves some Felicity H. to the max, but it seems a vote for her would be, well, a vote for her and not her performance in the movie.

Still, she's the only one who could upset Reese's apple cart. Nominations for Judi Dench (Mrs. Henderson Presents) and Charlize Theron (North Country) are pretty much acknowledgments of good work well done by previous winners -- which is more than you can say for recent honorees Halle Berry, Gwyneth Paltrow, or Helen Hunt! The big head-scratcher in this category is Keira Knightley (Pride & Prejudice), who managed to leapfrog over Ziyi Zhang (Memoirs of a Geisha), Laura Linney (The Squid and the Whale), and Naomi Watts (King Kong) for the category's fifth spot. Guess nobody can resist the charms of Jane Austen!

Our Pick: Though Felicity Huffman has a fighting chance (and the Weinstein brothers behind her), our heart sings for Reese Witherspoon -- plus, we're dying to see how manic hubby Ryan Phillippe will be when she wins!
