- DirectorNicolas RoegStarsJulie ChristieDonald SutherlandHilary MasonA married couple grieving the recent death of their young daughter are in Venice when they encounter two elderly sisters, one of whom is psychic and brings a warning from beyond. My love for this film goes deep and beyond the first time I saw it in 1973 and beyond the admiration of Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland. I am a big fan of the Daphnie du Maurier who wrote the short story on which the film is based and also of the Italian city of Venice where the film story is centred. The chiller thriller still gives me goosepimps to this day
- DirectorJean-Jacques AnnaudStarsEverett McGillRon PerlmanNicholas KadiThis story takes place in prehistoric time when three tribesmen search for a new fire source.I first watched this film in a Stratford on Avon cinema one Sunday evening way back in 1981 and have watched it dozens of times since. There is something unique and special about this movie which makes it stand out from all modern movies. Of course no subtitles are needed for this foreign language movie and the concept of the story is simple, repeated, I have discovered this week, with another French film called Ao very much in the same mould
- DirectorEdward LeSaintStarsHarry CareyStella RazetoGeorge BerrellThree outlaws fleeing a posse through the desert come upon a dying woman and her baby in a wagon. Before she passes away, she makes the men promise to take care of her baby and get it safely through the desert.this is one of those movies I remember watching on TV as a child and I cried my eyes out as these three cowboys against the odds carry this baby across the desert to its new home. A sensational movie which I would love to see again but I have never seen it released on DVD.
An early Western and definitely one for the tissues! - DirectorAndy TennantStarsWill SmithEva MendesKevin JamesA smooth-talking man falls for a hardened columnist while helping a shy accountant woo a beautiful heiress.
- DirectorTinto BrassStarsHelmut BergerIngrid ThulinTeresa Ann SavoyKitty runs a brothel in Nazi Germany where the soldiers come to "relax". Recording devices have been installed in each room by a power-hungry army official, who plans to use the information to blackmail Hitler and gain power himself. One of those classic movies never put on general release and with a distinct pornographic edge to its overall content as the Nazis sought to control womanhood and creation for the creation of the German super race. It is a rare film of its kind and its level of interest for historical thought provoking is no less than others on the German War theme. Certainly enjoyable and a little titilating, if I may that, on first viewing. Undoubtedly controversial
- DirectorLasse HallströmStarsRichard GereJoan AllenCary-Hiroyuki TagawaProfessor Wilson discovers a lost Akita puppy on his way home. Despite objections from his wife, Hachi endears himself to the family and grows to be Parker's loyal companion. As their bond grows deeper, a beautiful relationship unfolds. Most of us had never heard of the Japanese folklore tale of a dog called Hachiko until watching this movie and no doubt the appearance of Richard Gere helped to endorse the specialness of this story. True, the original story stays in Japan but moving the story to USA indeeds helps us appreciate the greatness of this story. One of the more recent movies which i have loved and watched more than once - how many boxes of tissues have I gone through watching this movie!
- DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsLaurence OlivierJoan FontaineGeorge SandersA self-conscious woman juggles adjusting to her new role as an aristocrat's wife and avoiding being intimidated by his first wife's spectral presence. My love of Daphnie du Maurier stories started with the Rebecca story from her book and now I know that every man in his life loves at some time a beautiful mysterious woman like Rebecca. This is a truly magical brilliant piece of story telling and mrs Danvers the Housekeeper is of course the real star of the show and we never really know who Rebecca is - but then we do not need to. Rebecca is through my eyes the perfect woman, if she can ever exist, but a real heart-breaker also
