Almost Silent
I started this list for Jeff, who was screening films in a former Church building. The space was astounding: spacious and dark, with just a little moonlight seeping in from the stained glass windows. The acoustics, however, were a huge stumbling block. With the sound echoing back and forth from the bare stone walls barely the dialogues became barely intelligible, one had to rely almost entirely on the subtitles to follow the story. Here's a list of films that have no dialogue at all, little dialogue, or where the image dominates the text to the point that one can almost watch them without hearing. I started off intuitively, going through the films I have seen and trying to remember which ones were almost silent. Then I sought out the number of lines of subtitles for each film, which turned out to be a painful 'reality check' as I was often waaay off, as you can see below.
[* I'm wondering whether I should create a dialogue-density index, dividing the total runtime by the number of subtitle lines....]

- DirectorClaude FaraldoStarsMichel PiccoliBéatrice RomandMarilù ToloMade without proper language, just gibberish and grunts, this is an absurdist comedy about a man who rejects every facet of normal bourgeois life and turns his apartment into a virtual cave.0 subs. No dialogues, only constant mumbling in a tone that sounds more or less like French. Tip: very appropriate for a game of DIY-subtitles.
Fabulous, very unique film about a factory worker who one day snaps and tears the outside walls of his own house down. As we would describe it these days, his personal revolutionary gesture quickly 'goes viral', as neighbours and friends can peer into his new-found freedom, and they too retract violently from their orderly urban lives into a more primitive, more sincere and direct form of social interaction. - DirectorJerzy SkolimowskiStarsVincent GalloEmmanuelle SeignerZach CohenAn Afghan POW attempts his escape.36 subs. Very few lines of text, none of which are essential to understanding the film, as it is shot from the perspective of someone who wouldn't be able to understand many of the languages spoken.
The text happens at 5 specific moments in the film: minute 12 to 14, 28 to 35, 44 to 48, 55 to 1:04, and 1:10 to 1:11. - DirectorLisandro AlonsoStarsMisael SaavedraHumberto EstradaRafael EstradaA man chop down trees, organizes the trunks, clean them, stops to defecate, lunch, nap and continues to sell its timber.82 subs
Watching a man cut down tree after tree can be fascinating, as it turns out. The photography doesn't have to be polished, the nature doesn't have to be colour-perfect, the tools don't have to be primitive, the man doesn't have to be Marlon Brando. The fascination stays with us as we watch the same man cook food next to an ugly makeshift tent, as he loads the timber onto a truck, negotiates a sale-price, calls a relative in his distant home village from a phone booth. It's hard to say what magic is at play here, what is sure is that there are no cheap tricks, and no resort to obvious or established notions of beauty either.
As far as the sound is concerned, there is one song on a lo-fi radio, a hideous merengue hit that we really don't need to listen to again. There's a short exchange at the beginning of the film, but the bulk of the dialogue happens between min 32 and 49. - DirectorSergei ParajanovStarsIvan MikolaychukLarisa KadochnikovaTatyana BestayevaA timeless Carpathian story - the young Ivan falls in love with the daughter of his father's killer among the Hutsul people of Ukraine.232 subs
The dialogue is somewhat less sparse than I remembered it, but it is spread quite evenly throughout its 97-minute runtime. In any case, it is such a stunningly visual film, with its combination of ethnic tableaux and moments of wonderful Carpathian psychedelia, that I still think it is a good candidate for screening in locations where the sound may be a problem. - DirectorCarlos ReygadasStarsCornelio WallMiriam ToewsMaria PankratzIn a Mennonite community in Mexico, a father's faith is tested when he falls in love with a new woman.356 subs
Another film with dialogues thinly but fairly spread out across its 136-minutes. There are many silent stretches with stunning visuals, but few of them are longer than 4 minutes. I think the reason that I remember it as an almost silent film is that the amateur actors speak in a way that is very restrained and understated, especially visually. You hear them talk, but what you see is a society of quiet persons, who seem to communicate very gently with a very unusual modesty in their body language and shyness in their eye contact. - DirectorGyörgy PálfiStarsFerenc BandiJózsefné RáczJózsef FarkasUsing almost no dialogue, the film follows a number of residents (both human and animal) of a small rural community in Hungary - an old man with hiccups, a shepherdess and her sheep, an old woman who may or may not be up to no good, some folk-singers at a wedding, etc. While most of the film is a series of vignettes, there is a sinister and often barely perceptible subplot involving murder.18 subs
There is no dialogue at all, just animal sounds. But close to the end, at minute 107 the subtitles translate the text of a song that is essential to understanding this quirky documentary as the thriller it really is.
Fantastically unusual, mysterious and funny at the same time. I once heard it described as a mix between David Lynch and Jacques Tati. Right on the spot, wild as it may sound. - DirectorClaire DenisStarsDenis LavantMichel SuborGrégoire ColinAn ex-Foreign Legion officer recalls his once-glorious life of leading troops in Djibouti.316 subs, scattered thinly and uttered slowly throughout the entire film, with many 2-4 minute-long silences in between. This film is acted silently though, with a lot of contradictory inner passions expressed through body and the camera movement rather than by text. It is very much a visual and sensual follow-up to its mother film 'Le Petit Soldat' by Godard, a political drama full of verbal statements that finishes with the escape of main character Bruno Forestier, whom we find now, decades later, in postcolonial Africa.
- DirectorJirí MenzelStarsRudolf HrusínskýVlastimil BrodskýVáclav NeckárSet in the late 1940s, the film concerns the treatment of suspect "bourgeois elements", a professor, a saxophonist, and a milkman, who are put to work in a junkyard for rehabilitation.Larks on a String
Many scenes with mime-style acting. Couples flirting in silence and from a distance across the borders of their punishment work camp.
A long dreamlike scene of a wedding is very silent, except for the live gypsy music, as is the entrance of the newly weds into their apartment and the play-chase they engage in. Other scenes are full of declamatory parodies of Soviet propaganda-speak. So this one's a bit of a mix. - DirectorAnh Hung TranStarsNu Yên-Khê TranQuynh NhuKhanh LeWith the brilliant Vietnamese summer as a setting Vertical Ray of the Sun is beautiful from beginning to end. The plot centres around three sisters, two of whom are happily married (or so it appears). The youngest sister is single and living with her cute older brother, whom she is desperately in love with. A second sister is married to a man who has another woman and child elsewhere whom he loves just as much as his wife -with a few conditions, she agrees to carry on with the marriage. The third sister and her husband are overjoyed to discover she is pregnant, and though he is tempted, her husband remains loyal to her. Charming, slow-paced, face value, family saga film.A la verticale de l'ete

Much more dialogue than the story requires, this is an incredibly sensual film set in a restaurant in the middle of a jungle-like environment. The photography is jaw-dropping, as is the quiet tension between two of the characters. The music is amazing. Rather than a plot spoiler this is a music spoiler, so stop reading here if you still want to be surprised. In the midst of this all-Asian rural landscape suddenly the most urban western music starts playing: the first chords of a song titled pale and then it says blue and then eyes. The rest of the music is also by the same lou guy whose surname is reed. - DirectorJohnnie ToStarsSimon YamKelly LinKa-Tung LamA gang of pickpockets roam the streets of Hong Kong. The Sparrow

Like Singing in the Rain, only without any singing, hardly any talking, and no dancing. Just beautifully choreographed walking, and near-acrobatic juggling of umbrella's, purses, carkeys... - DirectorSteve McQueenStarsMichael FassbenderLiam CunninghamStuart GrahamIrish republican Bobby Sands leads the inmates of a Northern Irish prison in a hunger strike.474 subs. Amazing camera work, colours, lighting, details, and very few dialogues, except one very long and very fast, dense conversation in the middle (min 46 to 1:09, that's 370 lines of sub in just 22 minutes) that really requires very careful listening, esp. for those not familiar with the accent. Other than that, the spoken text is mainly voice-over radio broadcasts and it is also quite thinly spread out through the film. The longest silent passages I've managed to spot were about 7 minutes long.
- DirectorRafa CortésStarsAlex BrendemühlMargalida GrimaltRafel RamisA handyman named Hans moves to a small town in Majorca where his presence strikes a discord with the local residents. Not sure about the amount of subtitles here. Dialogues are short and uncomfortable, as far as I can remember. The main character is shy and quiet, and he observes his new environment and the people he interacts with intensely. A man struggling with a second language (German speaking Spanish), as he tries to figure out the reason behind the villagers' hostility towards him. He stumbles into the eerie mystery story of the former employee he's been hired to replace.
- DirectorClaire DenisStarsMichel SuborGrégoire ColinYekaterina GolubevaAn emotionally cold man leaves the safety of his Alpine home to seek a heart transplant and an estranged son.352 subs, more than one ends up remembering. My favourite, and possibly the quietest, sequence is when the main character goes to an old Chinese masseuse who is completely blind.
- DirectorTodd HaynesStarsJulianne MooreXander BerkeleyDean NorrisAn affluent and unexceptional homemaker in the suburbs develops multiple chemical sensitivity.1254 subs.
Most of the dialogue happens halfway through the film, in a therapeutic retreat centre away from the city. Like 'Yo (2007)' the trick is that the main character is very quiet and increasingly alienated from her environment, which is why one tends to remember this film to be almost silent. It is a slightly longer film, 119 minutes, keep that in mind when you compare the amount of subtitles with other films, which are usually 90-100 minutes long. - DirectorAki KaurismäkiStarsJean-Pierre LéaudMargi ClarkeKenneth ColleyHenri is depressed after losing his job, but finds himself too afraid to go through with suicide. He hires a contract killer to do the job for him instead - but what happens if he changes his mind?219 subs.
Much like Stellet Licht, the characters here do talk, but you can hardly see them do so. This particular film is filmed in a deliberately static style, like a graphic novel. So much so that you almost expect dialogue bubbles to appear next to them, rather than the actual sound that you hear when they speak. - DirectorAgnès VardaStarsJean-Claude DrouotMarie-France BoyerMarcelle Faure-BertinFrançois, a young carpenter, lives a happy, uncomplicated life with his wife Thérèse and their two small children. One day he meets Emilie, a clerk in the local post office. So much is happening between this man and this woman... and other people. All of it is understated, it develops slowly and quietly like a disease.
- DirectorCorneliu PorumboiuStarsDragos BucurVlad IvanovIon StoicaA police officer refuses to arrest a young man for offering drugs to his friends.Extended stretches of silence here, as we accompany the main character through long lonely hours of his working day. The rest of his life is much less quiet, so every now and then we witness passages of dense, witty, mostly confrontational dialogue with other characters. The result is that during the quiet passages we are chewing back on the previous dialogue in our own heads. As, I guess, he is probably doing himself. At least if he is a little bit like I am in real life.

This film is not particularly meant to be watched sober, or even awake, so if you listen to all the text very closely you'll be none the wiser than the stoned hippy lying down on the bean bag next to you. - DirectorBarbet SchroederStarsBulle OgierJean-Pierre KalfonMichael GothardConsul's wife, Viviane took part in an expedition to New Guinea. She falls in love with Gaetan, the leader of a group of explorers, whose objective is to reach a mysterious valley.Another film about people exploring alternative states of consciousness, though this time around the text is much more coherent. As far as the dialogue, it's pretty sparse. There's a posh lady who you might not want to listen to, a womanising guru who you'd stand up and beg to please shut up, and finally, a pretty sharp exchange about cultural relativism somewhere 2/3 into the movie. The visuals are stunning and the actors all have a hypnotic aura about them, not less the amazing Bulle Ogier, so you want to keep watching even though you cannot stand the characters.

I'm delighted I saw it and I had fabulous conversations about it for a week. Still I'm not quite ready to recommend it.

There's a silent love scene at minute 01:07:00 that lasts only 7 minutes but feels like half an hour, it's so intense. I seemed to remember longer silent passages, but there's a steady flow of about five or six sentences every minute. - DirectorSu FriedrichStarsPeggy HealeyMakea MacDonaldEla Troyano"Damned If You Don't is a real prize. Beautifully shot in black and white, it blends conventional narrative technique with impressionistic camerawork, symbols and voicovers to create an intimate study of sexual expression and repression. It begins with footage from a stylish old potboiler about an isolated convent, whose tale of passions leashed and unleashed provides the leitmotif for a young lesbian who watches it and the lonely nun she pursues and seduces. As the two women's lives come closer to joining, voiceovers from the biography of a 16th century lesbian nun and the reminiscences of a woman's closeted romances at a Catholic school flesh out the theme. When the two women finally meet and make love, the woman's careful unwrapping of the nun's complicated prison of clothing is both foreplay and liberating metaphor. The film is as hypnotic as a dream."
