Final project by director Tom Gries, who died over four months before the movie's May 1977 release. He passed away on January 3, 1977. This Motion Picture is Dedicated to His Memory.
According to Ernest Borgnine in his biography, there was a strong relationship which rose between him and Cassius Clay during the shooting. Muhammad Ali cried when he saw the Borgnine's character weep during one scene.
The song "The Greatest Love of All", first introduced on the soundtrack of this movie by George Benson, went on to become an international smash hit for Whitney Houston in 1986.

Annie: My granny told me that I... I had a gift. That it runs in my family. And, she told me that I shouldn't be afraid of it. I should just always use my instinct and I'd... I'd be alright.
David: So you're swearing before this court that you didn't get your information about this tragedy from any other means than your special ability? Your "gift"?
Annie: Yes, Sir. I'm swearing that. Yes.
A truly good Drama/Thriller by director Sam Raimi. Written by Billy Bob Thornton.
Everyone involved was fantastic. Especially Ribisi as a mentally ill man and Reeves as a bad wife-beater. Finally Reeves in a role he was born to play! lol Got to see Katie naked for the 1st time! Nice! Hilary as the abused wife was pretty good. The late great Jeter was fantastic as the lawyer defending Reeves and tearing up Blanchett's character on the courtroom stand. Kinnear was good as your simple everyday man who's not what he appears to be. Cole as usual playing the "bad-boy" he plays so well. Harris appears as a nice old grandma ghost no less! The always great Simmons playing the non-believing law was great. The always reliable Ross plays Holmes daddy and as always does a good job.
All in all a great film. Nice to see Raimi not regulating himself to cheap CGI effects to scare up some genuine scares in this one.
Based on Billy Bob Thornton's own mother's reputed psychic abilities.
Annie's car is "The Classic" - the Delta 88 Oldsmobile that appears in every Evil Dead movie and nearly every other Raimi movie.
The cards Annie Wilson uses to perform her "readings" are actually Zener Cards, which are used to perform ESP tests. The cards are not known for their fortune-telling abilities, however, this is not necessarily a mistake. Fortune tellers can use a variety of cards from tarot decks to ordinary poker cards to give readings. All that truly matters is that the four elements of nature (fire, water, earth, and air) are represented in some form. Annie would still be able to deliver readings with them as long as she knew which symbols represented which element. - DirectorPaul McGuiganStarsMalcolm McDowellDavid ThewlisPaul BettanyChronicles the rise and fall of a prominent, and particularly ruthless English gangster.Karen: You're not a bad looking bloke.
Young Gangster: Bad looking bloke? Darlin'... I'm a prince.
Loosely based on the life of real-life mobster Frankie Fraser.
The two actors who play the "gangster" at the two points in his life are 7 inches different in height.
In the opening bathroom scene, it is actually director Paul McGuigan at the urinal, according to the director's commentary.
Jamie Foreman (Lennie Taylor) is the son of Freddie Foreman, a notorious gangster who used to run with the Kray Brothers. His life was the basis for the movie The Long Good Friday. - DirectorLexi AlexanderStarsElijah WoodCharlie HunnamClaire ForlaniA wrongfully expelled Harvard undergrad moves to London, where he is introduced to the violent underworld of football hooliganism.Matt Buckner: I've never lived closer to danger, but I've never felt safer. I've never felt more confident, and people could spot it from a mile away. And as for this, the violence? I gotta be honest - it grew on me. Once you've taken a few punches and realize you're not made of glass, you don't feel alive unless you're pushing yourself as far as you can go.
Terence Jay, who plays Jermey Van Holden, also performs the song 'oneblood' that plays during the final fight scene.
The actors playing the Green Street Hooligans had to work out with the production's trainer for four or five hours every day. The trainer, Pat E. Johnson, had most of the actors throwing up, he was working them so hard. A typical day would involve basic strength and fitness training for about two hours, followed by choreographing of the fight sequences. Rehearsals would take place in the afternoon, and then in the evening they would all go out drinking (which is probably why most of them were throwing up the next day). Elijah Wood was absented from most of this rigorous schedule to emphasize his outsider status.
Cass Pennant: One of the Manchester riot police at the train station. Cass Pennant was one of West Ham United's Inter City Firm's (ICF) leaders and a notorious hooligan in the late '70s. - DirectorMike MendezStarsDominic PurcellClare KramerJosie MaranAfter a night of drunken exploits, Allison, Harris, and Kira are chased and terrorized by the ghosts of a child pyromaniac, an ax murderer, and a rapist.Sid Vance: 'O joyful, 'O delighted, 'O fortunate one. Weep no more, this departed son. Life's for the living, not the dead. Forget tomorrow, live now instead. This night you breathe, while they cannot. So dance ye soul on their resting spot. Read these words, sound thy voice. Revel and sing! Rejoice! Rejoice! Rejoice!
Disney's ride The Haunted Mansion was a major inspiration to the film, including the design of the ghosts.
The character of Frances Culpepper was inspired by Velma from Scooby-Doo.
In South Carolina they burn down abandoned and/or condemned houses as opposed to demolishing them and the filmmakers asked if they could use an abandoned house before it was to be burned down. It was used several times throughout filming, as Kira's house and the sets of the pyromaniac ghost.
The slim man talking to Kira at the wake is the film's writer, Brad Keene. - DirectorJoe CarnahanStarsLiam NeesonDermot MulroneyFrank GrilloAfter their plane crashes in Alaska, six oil workers are led by a skilled huntsman to survival, but a pack of merciless wolves haunts their every step.[first lines]
Ottway: A job at the end of the world. A salaried killer for a big petroleum company. I don't know why I did half the things I've done, but I know this is where I belong, surrounded by my own. Ex-cons, fugitives, drifters, *beep* Men unfit for mankind.

Ottway: Once more into the fray. Into the last good fight I'll ever know. Live and die on this day. Live and die on this day.
According to actor Liam Neeson's account, the temperatures were as low as -40°C in Smithers (British Columbia) where the film was shot. The snow storms/scenes were actual prevailing weather conditions and not a cinematic illusion produced with CGI trickery (interview: The Tonight Show with Jay Leno: Episode #20.70). The cast wore thermals under their costumes for additional protection.
Bradley Cooper was originally cast, but was replaced with Liam Neeson.
Michael Biehn was considered for a role.
In order to prepare for his role, Liam Neeson reportedly ate wolf jerky. - DirectorZach BraffStarsZach BraffPeter SarsgaardNatalie PortmanA quietly troubled young man returns home for his mother's funeral after being estranged from his family for a decade.Sam: Hey, I recognize you.
Andrew Largeman: Oh, did you go to Columbia High?
Sam: No, not from high school, from TV. Didn't you play the retarded quarterback?
Andrew Largeman: Yeah.
Sam: Are you really retarded?
Andrew Largeman: No.
Sam: Ooh, great job man! I really thought you were retarded. I mean, you're better than that Corky kid and he's actually retarded. If there was a retarded Oscar you would win, hands down, kick his ass!
Zach Braff's directorial debut.
The depiction of 'Zach Braff''s character working in a Vietnamese restaurant was from his own experience. Braff worked as a waiter in a French-Vietnamese restaurant when he auditioned for the leading part in the series Scrubs.
Zach Braff had to give a testimonial to JFK International Airport in order to film there. His testimonial was about how much he liked Terminal 4, the terminal used to film the final scenes of the movie.
Sam's dead hamster, Jelly, was a real taxidermied hamster.
Peter Sarsgaard learned to play guitar for the film.
Tim (Jim Parsons), the knight armor-donning nerd, speaks the fictional language Klingon, from the Star Trek series. Parsons would later play the intellectual, yet socially-confused and Star Trek-obsessed nerd Sheldon in the sitcom, "The Big Bang Theory".
Zach Braff drew partially on knowledge from his mother, a psychologist, his stepfather, also a psychologist, and his step mother, a therapist, to give scenes involving mentions of psychiatrics and pharmaceuticals authenticity.
Peter Sarsgaard's character Mark collects Desert Storm playing cards, then in 2005 plays a Marine Scout sniper in Desert Storm in Jarhead.
Zach Braff wrote the majority of the script while he was in college, and originally titled it "Large's Ark". He tested the name on various messengers coming to his house during production, but none like the name. When he suggested "Large" no one liked it either. "Garden State" was well received. The original title still appears vestigially in the company credits, "Large's Ark Productions".
The motorcycle is a Russian/Ukrainian Dnepr.
The tombstones in the pet cemetery were made by the cast and crew, and feature their own deceased pets' names.
Based partly on Zach Braff's own childhood in New Jersey, as well as his days as a struggling actor in Los Angeles before the success of Scrubs. - DirectorFrank DarabontStarsTom HanksMichael Clarke DuncanDavid MorseA tale set on death row, where gentle giant John Coffey possesses the mysterious power to heal people's ailments. When the lead guard, Paul Edgecombe, recognizes John's gift, he tries to help stave off the condemned man's execution.John Coffey: He kill them wi' their love. Wi' their love fo' each other. That's how it is, every day, all over the world.
The great character actor Dabbs Greer's last film.
The character of John Coffey was named for Emerson College faculty member and Professor Emeritus of History John M. Coffee Jr., who Stephen King was introduced to by a student.
Frank Darabont cast Dabbs Greer because he was a fan of It! The Terror from Beyond Space, in which Greer had appeared. The film was also an inspiration for Alien, another of Darabont's favorite films, and which featured cast member Harry Dean Stanton.
Many actors in this film have previously or subsequently appeared in other Stephen King adaptations. David Morse appeared in The Langoliers and Hearts in Atlantis. James Cromwell appeared in 'Salem's Lot, which was previously made with his wife, Julie Cobb. Patricia Clarkson appeared in Carrie. Jeffrey DeMunn and William Sadler appeared together in The Shawshank Redemption as well as The Mist, also both directed by Frank Darabont. Harry Dean Stanton appeared in Christine, and Gary Sinise appeared in The Stand.
This movie features three actors who have portrayed real-life U.S. Presidents: David Morse played George Washington in John Adams, Gary Sinise played Harry S. Truman in Truman and James Cromwell played George H.W. Bush in W..
John Travolta was offered the role of Paul Edgecomb but turned it down.
By the time Paul introduced Elaine to Mr. Jingles, the mouse would have to be at least 64 years old - over nine times the age of the oldest ever known real mouse.
The plot unfolds in the form of Paul telling Elaine the story of the Green Mile. In the book, Paul writes his story down in the form of a novel. At the end of the film, as Paul leaves the cemetery after Elaine's burial, a tombstone can be seen behind him that reads "Greene", and two others, one in the foreground and one to the right of the screen, that read "Story".
Originally, Tom Hanks was going to play the Old Paul Edgecomb but the makeup tests didn't make him look credible enough to be an elderly man. Dabbs Greer was cast instead as the older Paul Edgecomb.
The music played over the loudspeakers in the retirement home as Old Paul Edgecomb first walks out of his room is the same as the music the nurses played at medication time in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. The music used is Mantovani's Charmaine.
At the beginning of the movie, when the old Paul Edgecomb is walking to get some breakfast after waking from that bad dream, he is walking on a tiled floor that is very green, as if it's his Green Mile.
Michael Jeter (who plays Eduard Delacroix) was also in Mousehunt, another film which co-starred a gifted mouse.
In actuality, Michael Clarke Duncan is of a similar height as his co-star David Morse and is a couple inches shorter than James Cromwell. Among other things, creative camera angles were used to create the illusion that Duncan as John Coffey towered over the prison staff, even Brutal Howell and Warden Moores.
Harry Dean Stanton appears in the film. There is a character named Harry, and another named Dean Stanton. This is merely a happy coincidence since the characters' names existed in the book long before Harry Dean Stanton was cast in the movie.
Originally set in 1932, the timeframe was bumped to 1935 so the movie Top Hat could be featured. - DirectorPatricia RiggenStarsEva MendesCierra RamirezPatricia ArquetteAs single mom Grace juggles work, bills, and her affair with a married doctor, her daughter, Ansiedad, plots a shortcut to adulthood after finding inspiration in the coming-of-age stories she's reading for school.A Tale of Acting Up, Acting Out, and Acting Your Age.
