Great Australian movies...
This list is a mixture of movies I have seen as an adult and scored and reviewed at this site, as well as movies I've seen before I got into the habit of scoring them and reviewing them at sites like this. Also included are dimly remembered movies I've seen as a chile and remember liking. There are some movies I'll include merely to remind myself to either see them again 'one of these days' or to see them for the first time.

- DirectorGeorge MillerStarsMel GibsonBruce SpenceMichael PrestonIn the post-apocalyptic Australian wasteland, a cynical drifter agrees to help a small, gasoline-rich community get rid of a horde of bandits.10/10
A great post-Apocalyptic vision of the future...where society has broken down and petrol the only thing of value...fuel for the beastly vehicles on show. "Waterworld" was accused of being "Mad Max 2: On water". Enjoyed the references to this movie on South Park too. - DirectorBruce BeresfordStarsEdward WoodwardJack ThompsonJohn WatersThree Australian lieutenants are court martialed for executing prisoners as a way of deflecting attention from war crimes committed by their superior officers.10/10
Would qualify as both the greatest war drama of all time and the greatest courtroom drama of all time. Fact based drama dealing with the nature of war. - DirectorAlex ProyasStarsRufus SewellKiefer SutherlandJennifer ConnellyA man struggles with memories of his past, which include a wife he cannot remember and a nightmarish world no one else ever seems to wake up from.10/10
A great sci-fi movie written by its Australian director Alex Proyas and filmed here too. The nature of humanity and personhood is explored here. - DirectorGregor JordanStarsHeath LedgerBryan BrownDavid FieldA 19 year old finds himself in debt to a local gangster when some gang loot disappears and sets him on the run from thugs. Meanwhile two street kids start a shopping spree when they find the missing money.10/10
A great surrealistic crimedy starring recently deceased Heath Ledger (of "The Dark Knight" fame...his performance as The Joker in that movie was the one great thing about it). - DirectorRob SitchStarsSam NeillBilly MitchellRoz HammondA remote Australian community, populated by quirky characters, plays a key role in the first Apollo moon landing.Haven't officially reviewed it at this site, but probably:
10/10
A great but low key comedy dealing with factual events...the broadcast of Neil Armstrong's walk on the moon. Australia did actually play a role in this broadcast...which this movie is about. I liked Seinfeld's Patrick Warburton in this movie...sort of Puddy-lite. Americans might get a kick out of their national anthem's use in this movie! - DirectorGillian ArmstrongStarsJudy DavisSam NeillWendy HughesA proud young woman in early 20th century Australia must choose between marriage and independence. Not officially reviewed at this site by me, but probably:
10/10 range.
Charming period piece about a woman not sure whether to pursue independence or...a man (from memory...long time no see). Humourous too, no doubt. Years later I also enjoyed reading the book by Miles Franklin...as was typical for that era, this was a nom de plume of a woman...Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin. Obviously she didn't think she'd get published if it was known that she was a woman. Our highest liteary honour, I think, is named after her. She is quite the word lord. Many's the time I had to dive into a dictionary to work out what she was saying! - DirectorPhoebe HartStarsPhoebe HartBonnie HartJames DavidsonDocumentary filmmaker, Phoebe Hart, comes clean on a journey of self-discovery around her hidden intersex condition.10/10
I saw this documentary on ABC TV but perhaps it got a theatrical release overseas or something. Engaging story which illustrates the power of the medium to relate to The Other. - DirectorDavid MichôdStarsJames FrechevilleGuy PearceJoel EdgertonA seventeen-year-old navigates his survival amongst an explosive criminal family and the detective who thinks he can save him.9/10
A powerful look at a suburban crime family. It does take elements from actual crimes to frame its story. - DirectorRolf de HeerStarsNicholas HopeClaire BenitoRalph CotterillBubby has spent thirty years trapped in the same small room, tricked by his mother. One day, he manages to escape and, deranged and naive in equal measures, his adventure into a modern and nihilistic life begins. Not officially reviewed at this site by me but probably:
9/10
A gloomy, then blackly funny comedy. It got a little "Hollywood" towards the end for me, but a gem of a movie...real 'cult favourite' material. - DirectorAndrew DominikStarsEric BanaSimon LyndonVince ColosimoChopper tells the intense story of Mark "Chopper" Read, a legendary criminal who wrote his autobiography while serving a jail sentence in prison. His book, "From the Inside", upon which the film is based, was a best-seller.Not officially reviewed at this site by me but probably:
9/10
Another surreal crimedy. Based on actual criminal...known by the moniker "Chopper" because...well...you'll find out! Eric Bana puts in a sterling performance as the big bad. - DirectorScott HicksStarsGeoffrey RushArmin Mueller-StahlJustin BrainePianist David Helfgott, driven by his father and teachers, has a breakdown. Years later he returns to the piano, to popular if not critical acclaim.A great central performance from Geoffrey Rush.
- DirectorBaz LuhrmannStarsPaul MercurioTara MoriceBill HunterA maverick dancer risks his career by performing an unusual routine and sets out to succeed with a new partner. Not officially reviewed at this site by me but probably:
8/10 or more
Described by some as "Rocky on the dancefloor". A feel good comedy about ballroom dancers (?!) who take on the squares running the sport. - DirectorGeorge MillerStarsTom HardyCharlize TheronNicholas HoultIn a post-apocalyptic wasteland, a woman rebels against a tyrannical ruler in search for her homeland with the aid of a group of female prisoners, a psychotic worshiper and a drifter named Max.82.5%
Doesn't reach the heights of Mad Max 2 but the next best in the series, nonetheless (I wasn't a fan of the first movie, after having seen the second movie first. The third movie was alright, I thought). - DirectorMark HartleyStarsPhillip AdamsGlory AnnenChristine AmorThe story of the Australian exploitation genre cinema of 1970s and 80s.8/10
An entertaining potted history of modern Australian genre movies. - DirectorKen HannamStarsNick TateJohn WatersElizabeth AlexanderA teacher discovers one of his students has a rare blood disease, and is drawn into a mystery that culminates in a thrilling climax.I caught up with this film on the weekend (06/09/2014) after it had been sitting on my PVR since 20/12/2013. It really stands up well. Reviewed it here yesterday. Now on official list. Original comments below score.

I have vague memories of seeing this film as a kid. Didn't mind it, from memory. Has a twist ending, if I recall. - DirectorJohn DuiganStarsHugh GrantTara FitzgeraldSam NeillWhen a painting is termed blasphemous, a young minister and his wife visit the artist... and the three sexually playful models living with him.I remember quite liking this movie but maybe I also remember some critics being harsh on it. All I remember is that I liked it. Features Elle Macpherson and Portia de Rossi...oh, found the right entry for this...Wikipedia says it also stars Hugh Grant.
- DirectorJocelyn MoorhouseStarsHugo WeavingGeneviève PicotRussell CroweThe life of a blind photographer who is looked after by a housekeeper is disrupted by the arrival of an agreeable restaurant worker.I remember quite liking this movie...I do sort of remember a funny scene relating to the blind main character. Definitely should reacquaint myself with this some time in the future.
- DirectorPeter FaimanStarsPaul HoganLinda KozlowskiJohn MeillonAn American reporter goes to the Australian outback to meet an eccentric crocodile poacher and invites him to New York City.I remember really liking this movie...probably at its best when it shifted the story to New York, I think it was.
- DirectorJohn CornellStarsPaul HoganLinda KozlowskiJohn MeillonAustralian outback expert protects his New York love from gangsters who've followed her down under.I remember liking this movie...not as much as the original...and I gave the next one in the series a miss...or the rest, if there were more!
- DirectorPeter WeirStarsRachel RobertsAnne-Louise LambertVivean GrayDuring a rural summer picnic, a few students and a teacher from an Australian girls' school vanish without a trace. Their absence frustrates and haunts the people left behind.Think I've seen this more than once but whilst liking it enough, I suppose, I just don't remember liking it enough to immediately think of it in lists like these.
- DirectorFred SchepisiStarsCharles McCallumJohn FrawleyArthur DignamFred Schepisi's first feature is this lushly photographed period drama detailing a young boy's coming-of-age in a strict Catholic seminary in 1950s Australia. What I remember about this film is an intriguing analogy mentioned by one of the priests in this movie...I actually asked about it on this site and a user replied with the quote and sense of the quote in parenthesis (the point of the comment below is to explain the concept on "eternity" in relation to "Hell"...oh, using the word "Eternity" just then reminds me...):
"Imagine a sphere of solid metal, the size of the sun; every ten thousand years a sparrow flies by and brushes its wings against it; when that metal sphere is worn to nothingness, you will still be [suffering in hell if not saved, etc., etc.]"
WOW!!! - DirectorJohn DuiganStarsNoah TaylorLoene CarmenBen MendelsohnIn rural 1960s Australia, a boy watches helplessly as his best friend falls in love with a small-time criminal, setting off a violent chain of events. My memories of this are really vague, but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and include it in my list proper.
- DirectorP.J. HoganStarsToni ColletteRachel GriffithsBill HunterA young social outcast in Australia steals money from her parents to finance a vacation where she hopes to find happiness, and perhaps love.Think I liked this well enough. Features the beautiful Sophie Lee...who seems contractually obliged to have her character give a male character a blow job in whatever film she appears in! Think I've seen maybe 3 where that is the case. Which makes me wonder...what's going on there?
Scenario 1:
Sophie - "Yeah, Marty, I love the idea of playing Mother Theresa...how about we include a scene where she gives the pope a blow job?"
Scenario 2:
Sleazy producer - "Let's see if we can get Sophie to be in this movie...then just chuck in a scene where she gives a guy a blow job!"
Guessing it might be "2". - DirectorJane CampionStarsGeneviève LemonKaren ColstonTom LycosAn introspective young woman's life is upturned by the arrival of her maladjusted sister.I saw this film and remember finding it really good...this was before I began posting reviews though, so I don't have an actual score for it. It was bizarrely funny...disconcertingly so. From memory, I felt that the ending didn't really finish off the movie as strongly as it began.
- DirectorHenri SafranIan GoddardStarsGreg RowePeter CumminsDavid GulpililMike is a lonely Australian boy living in a coastal wilderness with his reclusive father. In search of friendship he encounters an Aboriginal native loner and the two form a bond in the care of orphaned pelicans.Would have been made to watch this as part of education in primary school or something. Didn't mind it. One part is quite moving...from memory. Children's movie.
- DirectorStephan ElliottStarsHugo WeavingGuy PearceTerence StampTwo drag performers and a transgender woman travel across the desert to perform their unique style of cabaret. Not On List.
Didn't mind this film. - DirectorCarl SchultzBruce BeresfordStarsHardy KrügerGreg RoweJohn JarrattBased on the children's novel by celebrated South Australian author 'Colin Thiele', this is an emotional father and son story about tuna fishing of Southern Blue Fin tuna in South Australia's Port Lincoln fishing district. Accident prone son Snook is forever making mistakes much to the chagrin of his father Pascoe. But when tragedy strikes the fishing boat during a deep sea fishing trek in the Southern Ocean, the boy is called on to become a man in a rites of sea passage to reconcile is past mishaps and save both his father and the ship from certain disaster. Not On List.
As with "Storm boy", this would have been a movie I was made to see in primary school. Don't really remember too much about it...something about tuna fishing. Not in my main list, because it lacks the impact of a movie like "Storm boy". - DirectorPeter WeirStarsTerry CamilleriJohn MeillonKevin MilesThe small town of Paris, Australia deliberately causes car accidents, then sells/salvages all valuables from the wrecks as a means of economy. Not On List.
Probably has the most memorable car ever created. That's pretty much the only thing that I remember about this movie when it was screened on ABC perhaps...or SBS? That was some years ago. Anyway, I remember the car from the stunning image of it in a sci-fi themed book...which I saw as a kid...years before I saw the actual movie. - DirectorRob SitchStarsMichael CatonAnne TenneyStephen CurryA working-class family from Melbourne, Australia fights city hall after being told they must vacate their beloved family home to allow for infrastructural expansion. Not On List.
This film didn't grab me that much, despite the popular and critical vibe for it. Can't say that I remember too much about this movie...and I would have seen it more recently than some of the other movies in my list...but not when I was reviewing/scoring movies here. - DirectorMichael SpierigPeter SpierigStarsEthan HawkeWillem DafoeSam NeillIn the year 2019, a plague has transformed almost every human into vampires. Didn't really grab me that much. - DirectorJohn RuaneStarsSam NeillZoe CaridesJohn ClarkeCarl Fitzgerald is down-on-his-luck until he meets Sophie, a beautiful Greek girl. He gets a job as a cook, but accidentally kills a fellow worker. He turns to his unscrupulous best friend for help and they attempt to dispose of the body. Not On List.
Don't really remember too much about this...apart from John Clarke in a cemetary...digging...from memory. Maybe critics made a Hamlet comparison about that scene too...dunno. - DirectorDavid CaesarStarsBryan BrownToni ColletteJohn Goodman1973 Sydney: An Australian gangster sees booming business, due to U.S. soldiers being in town for relaxing between their tours to the Vietnam war, attracts the attention of first the Chicago mafia, and then their East Coast competitors. Not On List.
Was hoping for something as entertaining as the great "Two hands" but this one disappointed. Featured "Roseanne" star John Goodman. Still, it has a memorable scene concerning the introduction of pizzas to the local cuisine. Also noticed that one of the characters in the great "Shameless" tv series has this movie in their lounge...a rental, perhaps. Saw that in the last couple of years, perhaps, so maybe around the 3rd last series of that show or thereabouts. - DirectorLawrence JohnstonStarsLes FoxcroftNoel JordanNot On List.
Gosh, getting a hit for this movie is difficult...fortunately the forum for this title confirms that this is indeed the film I had in mind. Don't really remember too much of it...apart from the reason the film was called what it was. Was reminded of this title when inserting my comments for "The Devil's playground". - DirectorJohn DuiganStarsNoah TaylorThandiwe NewtonNicole KidmanTwo freethinking teenagers - a boy and a girl - confront with authoritarian teachers in their boarding schools. The other students treat this differently. Not On List.
As with "The year my voice broke" (to which this movie is a sequel), my memories of it are pretty vague, apart from remembering that Thandi Newton was in it...had forgotten about Nicole Kidman being in it...and she and Thandi are prominent on the graphic for this entry which comes up. Unlike the original movie, I won't give this film the benefit of the doubt and include it in my main list. Just because.
It's meant to be part of a trilogy...which I don't think has happened...yet. - DirectorPeter WeirStarsMel GibsonMark LeeBill KerrTwo Australian sprinters face the brutal realities of war when they are sent to fight in the Gallipoli campaign in Turkey during World War I.Not On List.
I've seen this film. Thought it was alright. Not part of my list proper though. Perhaps that's because it was set as part of the highschool curriculum here and it was merely 'work' for me...or it just didn't grab me as much as it did others. It's about a battle which became a founding myth of our fledgling nation. - DirectorJane CampionStarsKate WinsletHarvey KeitelJulie HamiltonRuth's been brainwashed by a guru in Delhi, India. Can't say that I really remember this movie much at all, apart from one scene...see my comment on Sophie Lee for the film "Muriel's wedding" in this list...this movie would be another example of that! - DirectorRichard LowensteinStarsNoah TaylorEmily HamiltonRomane BohringerA nightmare chase through hell in a never-ending, unrequited daisy chain of desire...Not On List.
Don't have very strong memories of this movie...maybe something about bikes going wild in it? Perhaps I liked it enough to include in my list proper...but I'm just too vague about it, not having reviewed and scored it here. - DirectorJoseph PerryNot On List.

My cousin 'dragged' me to see Mad Max 2 when I was a boy. I was no doubt reluctant, because Hollywood really captured thrills and spills the best, I thought. Mad Max 2 actually blew Hollywood movies away and I was enthralled by it.
As a result, I went back to the original...which didn't grab me so much...even when I saw it more recently...before I really wrote reviews here.
The scene at the end is memorable though...no doubt inspiring the aptly named movie "Saw".
Joanne Samuel is a looker in this movie. - DirectorGeorge MillerGeorge OgilvieStarsMel GibsonTina TurnerBruce SpenceAfter being exiled from the most advanced town in post-apocalyptic Australia, a drifter travels with a group of abandoned children to rebel against the town's queen. Not On List.
From memory, I actually didn't mind this movie...it's just not in the same league as the previous sequel. Might still check out the upcoming sequel...which, unfortunately, will not feature original star Mel Gibson...man, when those Illuminati take a dislike to you...
In any case, US singer Tina Turner (who also stars in this movie) has a couple of terrific songs in this movie and another singer, "Angry" Anderson also provides some comic relief...Warner Bros. cartoon style. - DirectorNadia TassStarsColin FrielsJohn HargreavesLindy DaviesA socially awkward and mechanically gifted man becomes involved in a quirky and unconventional crime. Not On List.

Hmm. - DirectorRichard FranklinStarsStacy KeachJamie Lee CurtisMarion EdwardA laid-back American truck driver in south Australia suspects that the driver of a green van is killing young women along his route, and plays a game of cat-and-mouse to catch him.Not On List.
Have not seen this movie, but I saw it featured in "Not quite Hollywood" and I am now interested in watching it...one of these days. What put me off watching this film is the presence of American cast...usually another to signal that the movie is a dog...this one has two Americans in the cast, so maybe that was twice the number of warning bells? Those Americans are Jamie Lee Curtis (of the original "Halloween" movie) and Stacy Keach (not exactly sure of what he's been in...don't think I've watched anything with him in it!). It's a thriller. NQH made it sound interesting. - DirectorGeoffrey WrightStarsRussell CroweDaniel PollockJacqueline McKenzieA group of skinheads become alarmed at the way their neighbourhood is changing. Not On List.

Would normally be leary of watching movies about Aboriginals...would think that I'd find them depressing. There is a moment in this movie where you think that it could take off in a new direction...when Delilah is near a store in the big smoke...you sense an opportunity for her there. - DirectorHerbert BoothJoseph PerryStarsBeatrice DayHarold GrahamMr. GrahamThe plot outlined the story of the early Christian martyrs with a compendium of horrors guaranteed to jolt audiences into an awareness of terrible suffering for the sake of Christianity. Contained maulings at the Colosseum, crucifixions, beheadings, savage hackings and burnings at the stake, burnings in the limepit, the spectacle of human torches in Nero's garden. Overall "soul stirring stories of the martyrs, illustrated by the most beautiful living pictures by kinematograph and limelight and never before witnessed in this or any other country. Not On List.
This may be the film that I alluded to in my entry for "The story of the Kelly gang".
Think I heard that this was arguably the first narrative film anywhere in the world (a claim that I had heard, I think, for "The story of the Kelly gang").
The site where I found the name of these two Salvation Army related films
https://www.salvationarmy.org.au/Who-We-Are/History-and-heritage/Australias-first-film-studio/
states of this film that:
"First narrative drama film presentation, consisting of an ingenious mix of moving film, glass-slides, oratory and music. Soldiers of the Cross premiered at the Melbourne Town Hall in September 1900." - DirectorHerbert BoothNot On List.
Not sure if this is the film that I allude to in my entry for "The story of the Kelly gang". A website where I saw the name of this film states:
"First Australian narrative film on social work, entitled Social Salvation, 1898/99."
That site also describes as the studio which made this film:

The reason why I have so much inertia to overcome when thinking of watching an Australian movie...just a very poor movie. Just another in a long line of disappointing Australian movies. When I think bad Australian movies, I think of things like bad acting and bad scripts...or imported American actors...or Australian actors playing Americans...normally a sure sign it sucks! Maybe this movie had an imported actor...one of it's many flaws. - DirectorAlby MangelsStarsJohn FieldAlby MangelsNot On List.
This was another ones of those movies we'd get shown in primary school...memorable scene...insofar as I still remember the tortoise soup scene...which I found gross. Your host, Alby Mangels has lead an interesting life...even had issues after this documentary was made. Proably didn't mind this movie...just don't remember it too strongly.
I think this may have been know as "Alby Mangels' World safari".
