- DirectorPaul AlmondStarsDouglas KeayBruce BaldenJacqueline BassettIn this the first installment, we get a chance to meet some of the individuals who took on the responsibility of the 7 Up project, 21-years-ago - Tony, Bruce, Suzi, Nick and Peter.I've followed this series since SBS TV aired this original in the series...even paying to see it in the cinema for later releases. The last in the series (54 up) was perhaps the best in the series...that premiered on SBS TV recently...no cinema release, I don't think.

This just seemed more coherent when broadcast over three night on SBS TV, as opposed to one documentary at the cinema. - DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsRobert DonatMadeleine CarrollLucie MannheimA man in London tries to help a counter-espionage agent, but when the agent is killed and the man stands accused, he must go on the run to save himself and stop a spy ring that is trying to steal top-secret information.Hmm...this could be a bit of nostalgia on my part. I'm assuming that I saw the Alfred Hitchock version of this movie. As a child or a teen I remember finding the scene where the man and the woman are shackled together to be hilarious. Maybe it was the remake (1959) which I saw more recently (and didn't find particularly funny...or vice versa) which makes me think that maybe nostalgia isn't what it used to be...or I just need to see both movies and see if one still stacks up as well as I remember it.
- DirectorLarry CharlesStarsSacha Baron CohenKen DavitianLuenellKazakh TV talking head Borat is dispatched to the United States to report on the greatest country in the world.80%
Fortunately avoids the narrative device on his previous movie, which featured his classic tv series character "Ali G". I.e. this film is more like a series of set pieces than some cobbled together 'story'...and it's all the funnier for it. - DirectorLarry CharlesStarsSacha Baron CohenGustaf HammarstenClifford BañagaleFlamboyant, gay Austrian Brüno looks for new fame in America.80%
Maybe found this as funny as "Borat"...which surprised me, as I didn't have high hopes for the movie, based on the character featured. - DirectorHugh HudsonStarsBen CrossIan CharlesonNicholas FarrellTwo British track athletes, one a determined Jew and the other a devout Christian, are driven to win in the 1924 Olympics as they wrestle with issues of pride and conscience. Not too strong in my memory, but I think I remember the outcome of the races represented here...along with why someone didn't run in one particular race. The music is hard to forget...especially as it gets used such a lot in pop culture.
- DirectorAndrew AdamsonStarsTilda SwintonGeorgie HenleyWilliam MoseleyWhile playing, Lucy and her siblings find a wardrobe that lands them in a mystical place called Narnia. Here they realize that it was fated and they must now unite with Aslan to defeat an evil queen.10/10.
Classic family movie. The best in the series, by a long way. - DirectorStanley KubrickStarsMalcolm McDowellPatrick MageeMichael BatesIn the future, a sadistic gang leader is imprisoned and volunteers for a conduct-aversion experiment, but it doesn't go as planned. This movie does have some stunning images that have stayed with me. Rewatching it again years after originally viewing it as a teenager or young adult, I got a great kick out of the scene where the anti-hero, Alex, finds religion...to me, that just summed up the human nature!
- DirectorWilliam WylerStarsTerence StampSamantha EggarMona WashbourneA man kidnaps a woman and holds her hostage just for the pleasure of having her there.Saw this as a child...multiple times (mainly because there wasn't much choice in free to air networks back then...but obviously there must have been something about this movie which made rewatching it 'doable'). From vague memory this was rather creepy...still remember the premise...a man kidnaps a beautiful woman and intends to keep her with him...forever.
- DirectorPeter GreenawayStarsRichard BohringerMichael GambonHelen MirrenAt Le Hollandais gourmet restaurant, every night is filled with opulence, decadence and gluttony. But when the cook, a thief, his wife and her lover all come together, they unleash a shocking torrent of sex, food, murder and revenge.10/10
Greenaway's best movie...beautiful and disturbing. Stunning imagery and a hypnotic score too. - DirectorNick HurranStarsMatt SmithDavid TennantJohn HurtIn 2013, something terrible is awakening in London's National Gallery; in 1562, a murderous plot is afoot in Elizabethan England; and somewhere in space an ancient battle reaches its devastating conclusion.85+%
One of a handful of great episodes of the revived series. Funny and poignant too. - DirectorJohn BoormanStarsNigel TerryHelen MirrenNicholas ClayMerlin the magician helps Arthur Pendragon unite the Britons around the Round Table of Camelot, even as dark forces conspire to tear it apart.10/10
Magical, inspiring, exhilarating legend. With "O Fortuna" playing, you kind of want to go out and pillage... - DirectorJulien TempleStarsPaul CookSteve JonesJohn LydonA film about the career of the notorious punk rock band, the Sex Pistols.I remember liking this docu enough...still remember the clip of the Sex Pistols on that English chat show, being goaded by the host into swearing, when the host himself was being a sleaze. Think this is also the documentary where the Sex Pistols' Johnny Rotten gives his opinion on fellow 'punk' act Patti Smith's album "Horses"..."Horses? More like horse_!".
- DirectorMike NewellStarsHugh GrantAndie MacDowellJames FleetOver the course of five social occasions, a committed bachelor must consider the notion that he may have discovered love.Found this extremely funny the first time that I saw it although not so much the second time. Originally, found Rowan Atkinson a hoot as a priest and kept wondering if it was that chick from the all time great film "Sex, lies and videotape" co-starring in this movie. It was. This is the kind of British hit that I really like...as opposed to British hits like (the rather "meh") "The full Monty" and the abysmal "Death at a funeral". Just could not see the appeal of those two movies.
- DirectorDavid YatesStarsDaniel RadcliffeEmma WatsonRupert GrintHarry, Ron, and Hermione search for Voldemort's remaining Horcruxes in their effort to destroy the Dark Lord as the final battle rages on at Hogwarts.10/10
Fortunately this final part was a great finale for the series. The first part of the finale felt like treading water and was in danger of doing a "Matrix"...i.e. sequels which just tread water and make you wish (in the case of The Matrix) it had stopped with just one movie. - DirectorAlfonso CuarónStarsDaniel RadcliffeEmma WatsonRupert GrintHarry Potter, Ron and Hermione return to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for their third year of study, where they delve into the mystery surrounding an escaped prisoner who poses a dangerous threat to the young wizard.Until the final part of the final movie, this was my favourite Potter movie. I enjoyed the time travel story in it. Not fresh in my memory, so I'm a bit vague on it.
- DirectorClive BarkerStarsAndrew RobinsonClare HigginsAshley LaurenceA woman discovers the newly resurrected, partially formed, body of her brother-in-law and lover. She starts killing for him to revitalize his body and escape the demonic beings that are pursuing him after he escaped their underworld.90%
Genuinely scary and disturbing horror movie. There were a whole lot of sequels but I lost interest in this franchise after the 2nd sequel, from memory. - DirectorArmando IannucciStarsTom HollanderPeter CapaldiJames GandolfiniA political satire about a group of skeptical American and British operatives attempting to prevent a war between two countries. It's a toss up for me whether to have this in the "Not On List" section of this list. Think I had some notes for it and if had reviewed it here it might have been easier for me to call the toss. In any case, I'll include it in the list proper...from memory it was an amusing political satire...not so fresh in my memory as to be able to draw comparisons with other things...perhaps it's a bit like "Yes Prime Minister" or something?
- DirectorTom HooperStarsColin FirthGeoffrey RushHelena Bonham CarterThe story of King George VI, his unexpected ascension to the throne of the British Empire in 1936, and the speech therapist who helped the unsure monarch overcome his stammer.95%
Higher score than I remember. Did feel that this pipped the superior movie ("The social network") at the Academy Awards though. - DirectorGuy RitchieStarsJason FlemyngDexter FletcherNick MoranEddy persuades his three pals to pool money for a vital poker game against a powerful local mobster, Hatchet Harry. Eddy loses, after which Harry gives him a week to pay back 500,000 pounds.I remember liking this funny, violent, gangster related movie but the details escape me, hence unscored. Tarantinoesque.
- DirectorTerry JonesStarsJohn CleeseTerry GilliamEric IdleThe comedy team takes a look at life in all of its stages in their own uniquely silly way.For two scenes...the sperm song and the hilarious bit with Death whingeing about things that annoy him! Despite only seeing this film twice, and many years apart (and ago), I think I still know the bits lyrics from the sperm song, if not all of them!
- DirectorTerry GilliamTerry JonesStarsGraham ChapmanJohn CleeseEric IdleKing Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table embark on a surreal, low-budget search for the Holy Grail, encountering many, very silly obstacles.Think I saw this at the drive-in. Absolutely hilarious. Maybe their more famous "Life of Brian" is funnier than I found it as a kid...but "Holy grail" is the one that really had me in stitches...and I'm assuming that my childlike sense of humour did not lead me astray at the time!
- DirectorSidney LumetStarsAlbert FinneyLauren BacallIngrid BergmanIn December 1935, when his transcontinental luxury train is stranded by deep snow, detective Hercule Poirot is called on to solve a murder that occurred in his car the night before, with a multitude of suspects.Probably a pre-teen when I saw this on VHS rental. Remember thinking it a great movie. For that reason I'll put it in my main list. Don't think I've seen too much other Agatha Christie stuff. Must rewatch this movie 'one of these days'.
- DirectorDon SharpStarsGeorge SandersBeryl ReidNicky HensonAn amiable, psychopathic leader of a violent teen motorbike gang is spurred by his mother, a Satan-worshiping spiritual medium, into committing suicide and returning to life as an "undead".Hopefully this is the film that I remember finding one particular scene in it quite funny. Saw this in the drive-in back in the day. It's a horror movie...with - from memory - a very funny scene in it. I do remember laughing out loud in the car at this scene...which triggered some other kids my own age (young) to laugh too...kind of like I gave them permission to laugh. It's a weak recommendation, for sure, but hey, at least I remember this movie for something!
- DirectorJames IvoryStarsMaggie SmithHelena Bonham CarterDenholm ElliottLucy Honeychurch (Helena Bonham Carter) shares a brief romance with George Emerson in Florence. Yet as she tries to move on with her life and look for marriage elsewhere, can she truly forget the events of that summer?10/10

At the time of adding this movie I haven't seen movies like "12 years a slave", "The wolf of Wall Street" or "Blue Jasmine" but this is my personal Best Film and Best Actress pick. It stands head and shoulders above movies like "American hustle" and "Gravity" in my view. - DirectorMartin McDonaghStarsColin FarrellWoody HarrelsonSam RockwellA struggling screenwriter inadvertently becomes entangled in the Los Angeles criminal underworld after his oddball friends kidnap a gangster's beloved Shih Tzu.90%
Was ready to add this to my just created list of great American independent movies...but it's British! - DirectorDanny BoyleStarsKerry FoxChristopher EcclestonEwan McGregorThree friends discover their new flatmate dead but loaded with cash.My memories of this are really quite vague, apart from the aspect of how an unexpected windfall opens up a can of worms for the characters. I should see this film again sometime.
- DirectorGuy RitchieStarsJason StathamBrad PittStephen GrahamUnscrupulous boxing promoters, violent bookmakers, a Russian gangster, incompetent amateur robbers and supposedly Jewish jewelers fight to track down a priceless stolen diamond.I remember liking this funny, violent, gangster related movie but the details escape me, hence unscored. Tarintinoesque.
- DirectorRobin HardyStarsEdward WoodwardChristopher LeeDiane CilentoA puritan police sergeant arrives in a Scottish island village in search of a missing girl, who the pagan locals claim never existed.Again, another movie I saw as a child...maybe on free to air tv. Can't say that it made a huge impression on me...apart from the powerful ending, which I didn't see coming. I still remember that...it was like a blow to the stomach with a sledgehammer. Any film with such a great 'moment' like that deserves some sort of recognition.

A break from the formula.
Nasty.
Horrific.
If you took away the comic book elements from Dalton's time, his Bond movies would have stacked up better than most, but maybe at the time he seemed too 'serious'...a charge that looks like a compliment today. - DirectorJohn GlenStarsRoger MooreMaud AdamsLouis JourdanA fake Fabergé egg recovered from the body of a fellow agent leads James Bond to uncover a jewel smuggling operation led by the mysterious Octopussy, and a plot to blow up a NATO air base.80% - 85%

Failed to capture the comedic magic of the tv series which starred this character...due to the choice to present this is some sort of conventional narrative style...this was rectified for the follow up movie, "Borat"...which was comedy gold...surprisingly, perhaps, as Ali G was the highlight of the tv series. - DirectorTerry McDonoughStarsDavid BradleyRoss Gurney-RandallRoger MayAn actor tapped by a succession of hard-man roles and a wannabe producer frustrated by the TV industry's glass ceiling find unlikely hope and unexpected challenges in the form of a Saturday tea-time drama, time travel and monsters. Not On List.

I think I walked into this movie one picosecond late and so could not make heads nor tales of the story as a result. That being said, I think that the rape scene in this movie is the greatest scene of all time. Can't say I recall anything about this movie apart from the fact that I saw it...although I do recall that it featured the pretty woman who starred in "Bless this house", a good British sitcom from the 1970s, I think.
