- DirectorDaniel RibeiroStarsGhilherme LoboTess AmorimFabio AudiThe arrival of a new student in school changes Leonardo's life. Also watch out folks this one is coming back with a sequel.
- DirectorTravis MathewsStarsJesse MetzgerBrenden GregoryTwo best friends playfully negotiate their way toward having sex together for the first time. A real pleasure to watch
- DirectorMichael D. AkersStarsLeo MinayaJack KesyDarra Like Dat BoydA paralyzed gay bicycle racer risks home, relationships and personal health to reenter the fray as a paraplegic racer.Oh my god, i am so in love with this film! - DirectorLee GaleaStarsTristan BarrLucas LinehanRohana HayesMike has felt alienated and alone for as long as he can remember, until a new boy arrives at his school - awakening feelings and a world of possibilities he'd never before dared to dream of.Ok im going to say straight up that the film has that low budget look but i have to say that i didnt care and you certainly wont either. Such a beautifully amazing (australian) film that was perfect, the use of music was amazing and the alignment between the story and the project within the story was beautiful. i have to say i cried all over the place it was wonderful. really recommend
- DirectorThom FitzgeraldStarsOlympia DukakisBrenda FrickerKristin BoothA lesbian couple escape from their nursing home and head up to Canada to get married. - DirectorMarco BergerStarsManuel VignauLucas FerraroMercedes QuinterosAfter girlfriend Laura dumps him for another man, Bruno plots to come between the new lovers. But his plan takes an unexpected turn, causing Bruno to question his own sexuality.Granted a film that won't be for everyone as it takes some real patience to sit through but that patience is rewarded. This quiet beauty doesn't need to fill the spaces in between with overworked acting or the dramas you might find elsewhere, instead you have a film stripped to its bare bones. Outstanding performances from the lead actors that sometimes needn't even speak to deliver their message and a story as calm as it is somehow powerful. Breaking all preconceived notions of what a LGBT film must be, Plan B opens your mind to a different way if seeing things that I'm sure you'll love.
- DirectorMarco BergerStarsManuel VignauMateo ChiarinoLuz PalazónMartin seeks for a temporary job at Eugenio's house. When they recognize to be childhood friends, Eugenio offers him work for the summer. A power and desire game starts and their relationship grows beyond their friendship.Does magic exist? The answer is yes and somehow MARCO BURGER has found some and is enclosing it into his films for our viewing pleasure.
He follows up Plan B in his own signature style, when watching his films it is best to abandon all you think you know and allow yourself to fully be hypnotised by what is happening onscreen. His films break the molds and he constantly takes what we expect of LGBT cinema and redefines it into something genuine, something of his own creation, something that I have only ever seen exist at his hand.
A outstanding film full of subtext and perfect silences. The pauses and glances create a dialogue of their very own. A film that doesn't just mindlessly entertain you but transports you and allows you to experience the story that has been carefully and perfectly created.
Now we must wait and hope that we can again be blessed (and spoilt) by another piece of this mans extraordinary genius in what will no doubt be another triumph as we watch him go from strength to strength. - DirectorSimon ChungStarsPierre-Matthieu VitalQilun GaoYung Yung YuA guy is found by the police swimming naked. He can't, or refuses to, speak and is sent to a hospital. Since no diagnosis can be made, he will be transferred to a mental hospital, when his male nurse decides to take another route. Slowly the reason for his speechlessness becomes clear. Together with the nurse's girlfriend and a female friend of the silent stranger, their history is explained. The trailer for this film gave me an optimistic feeling about the film to come, however the beginning of the film left me expecting to be thoroughly disappointed! However by the films end i was so pleased i had stuck with it, it proved to be an exceptional film and an amazing mystery/drama one of the only gay mysteries i can claim to have seen it was refreshing to see LGBT cinema represented in another genre! Everyone should give it a watch its worth sticking it out!
- DirectorJulian JarroldStarsChiwetel EjioforJoel EdgertonSarah-Jane PottsA drag queen comes to the rescue of a man who, after inheriting his father's shoe factory, needs to diversify his product if he wants to keep the business afloat.Although not entirely in place on this list i felt that i couldn't leave the film out as it was just so damn spectacular! A timeless tale very much remnant of the amazing Get Real (1998) it is physically impossible for this film not to bring you joy.
- DirectorDominic HaxtonDavid RoslerStarsAdam DonovanJake RobbinsVirginia BartholomewInspired by the alarming increase in real-life tragedies involving high school bullying and suicide, Teens Like Phil tells the story of a gay teen, Phil, and his former friend, Adam, who brutally bullies him.Not since Eu Não Quero Voltar Sozinho (2010) have I come across a short this fabulous, truly stunning with a touching and extremely important story line, especially in this day and age. Completed all within 20 minutes - remarkable.
Also available in full on Youtube HERE - DirectorDaniel RibeiroStarsGhilherme LoboFabio AudiTess AmorimLeonardo is a blind teenager searching for independence. His everyday life, the relationship with his best friend Giovana, and the way he sees the world change completely with the arrival of Gabriel.I'm not going to say that the full length feature is better than the short because that would be wrong of me. Although obviously inspired and adapted from the short both are absolutely stunning pieces if cinema that need to be equally appreciated. I will say however that the full length feature does the short justice. Watching the film I was beyond nervous that they would screw it up somehow, in a 90 minute film they would have endless opportunities to let down the short and forever soil it in my mind. In the end there was no need for nerves because we were in safe familiar hands.
The film itself was an instant hit, stunningly beautiful and remarkably funny without becoming a comedy. I cannot stress how perfectly it was adapted and how much it was worth the wait. Now would a sequel that was just as perfect be too much to ask?
Also if you aren't familiar with the short Eu Não Quero Voltar Sozinho I would recommend it to all, it is available in full on youtube HERE - DirectorNeil ArmfieldStarsRyan CorrSarah SnookFrancesco FerdinandiThe warm, funny and achingly sad story of the 15-year-long love affair between Timothy Conigrave and the boy he fell in love with at high school, John Caleo.A fantastic Australian LGBT film, an adaption of a book by the same name. It was a great representation of the Australian journey through the AIDS epidemic. Told with some great acting (and cute actors). It has been a well received hit.
- CreatorBradley BredewegPeter PaigeStarsTeri PoloSherri SaumHayden ByerlyTeenager Callie Jacob is placed in a foster home with a lesbian couple and their blend of biological, adoptive, and foster children.Could this show BE any more perfect?! The answer is a simple NO.
First we have amazing characters. Then they had to go and find actual amazing actors to portray them. Then as if they hadn't done enough they gave us great storylines. Then they gave us brilliant soundtracks. I mean seriously what on earth did we do to deserve this brilliance. I have no idea and I'm not going to question it. I am just going to enjoy every morsel. - DirectorFrancis LeeStarsJosh O'ConnorAlec SecareanuGemma JonesSpring. Yorkshire. Young farmer Johnny Saxby numbs his daily frustrations with binge drinking and casual sex, until the arrival of a Romanian migrant worker for lambing season ignites an intense relationship that sets Johnny on a new path.I avoided watching this film for a long time due to the hype that was surrounding it and the commentary tying it to Brokeback Mountain. Eventually when I did watch it I could see the reason for the hype. The film was stunning with some really great performances.
In the end I could see why people were tying it to Brokeback - for me they served as soft of bookends of the same sort of series, Brokeback lived so that we could have a different kind of ending in God's Own Country. - DirectorMarco BergerStarsGaston ReAlfonso BarónMalena IrustaIn the suburbs of Buenos Aires, Gabriel has just moved in with his colleague, Juan. Shy and reserved, Gabo is reluctant to follow Juan's wandering hands and meaningful looks.Marco Berger makes some of the best films you will ever see. In this masterpiece you get his same slow burn story and visuals. The intense performances are delivered again with his simple and masterful story lines.
I have to admit for a lot of the film it seemed to be heading in a certain direction and it really provoked a feeling of dislike in me at the message that was being sent. However Marco delivered a stunning but atypical ending that left me raving! - DirectorOndi TimonerStarsMatt SmithMarianne RendónJohn Benjamin HickeyA look at the life of photographer Robert Mapplethorpe from his rise to fame in the 1970s to his untimely death in 1989.A wonderful piece telling the life story of the famed photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.
- DirectorJoel EdgertonStarsLucas HedgesNicole KidmanJoel EdgertonThe son of a Baptist preacher unwillingly participates in a church-supported gay conversion program after being forcibly outed to his parents. This story of strength and endurance was something special. Debuting at a time when conversion therapy is being widely discussed it brought a story to the masses that could really get into peoples hearts.
- DirectorMarco BergerMartín FarinaStarsGabriel EpsteinLucas PapaNicolás BarsoffA man invites another guy he trains with to spend some time in his country house among other male friends.Marco Berger is for me the best in gay films. His work is always amazing and the stories he tells stay in your mind and heart. Taekwondo was another of his gems. A slow burn story told with extraordinary visuals.
- DirectorBarry JenkinsStarsMahershala AliNaomie HarrisTrevante RhodesA young African-American man grapples with his identity and sexuality while experiencing the everyday struggles of childhood, adolescence, and burgeoning adulthood.A beautiful barrier breaker. This film was ticking of so many mainstream firsts. At the heart though you have a beautiful film and a stunning story.
- DirectorThomas BezuchaStarsArye GrossEric SchweigTim DeKayBig Eden is a small, fictional northwestern Montana town.A film with a lot of heart that delivers. Heartfelt and heartwarming this quaint lovely film really breaks apart a lot of the conventional storylines we see over and over again and brings some freshness to the storytelling.
- StarsJulian MorrisVanessa RedgraveOliver Jackson-CohenTales of love across two films highlighting the very different challenges that face the couples, With Michael and Thomas just after WWII, and Adam and Steve in the present day.Rarely do you have the opportunity to watch something so well done, so well written, so well acted, designed beautifully, shot beautifully, funded perfectly and coming together in the perfect morsel for your enjoyment.
This redefines you’re best list, it casts all others alongside it or in its shadow. Every element of this is a pure and perfect delight. Engaging you for every moment of screen time. Surprising, delighting and shocking you as you journey through this literal masterpiece.
I am thankful for every single person who had a hand in making and distributing this and although I known none of them I’m so proud of the beautiful work they have accomplished.
A perfect piece of cinema.
The only downside is that it ends. - DirectorEnrico CasarosaStarsJacob TremblayJack Dylan GrazerEmma BermanOn the Italian Riviera, an unlikely but strong friendship grows between a human being and a sea monster disguised as a human. While not explicitly LGBT I think the story of this film has so many different elements that a gay person can relate to and sympathise with. The story is gorgeous and there does seem to be a sort of queer coding throughout the film.
- CreatorManolo CaroStarsCecilia SuárezErnesto AlterioAlejandro SpeitzerThe story begins with a young boy being asked by his parents to return to Spain to meet his fiance. He returns accompanied by Lazaro, a mysterious ballet dancer.A beautiful three part miniseries shows some of the history of the gay life and experience in the past. Some stunning story lines and just beautiful visuals all the way through. Isaac Hernández is just incredible in this and his dancing scenes really show the beauty of ballet.
