In Memory of Harry Dean Stanton
Weather-beaten character actor Harry Dean Stanton has passed away at 91 years old. Though he didn't begin acting in films until he was almost 30, his career, which started with small TV parts in the '50s, has now spanned 63 years and nearly 200 titles.
Per the trivia section on his IMDb page, celebrated critic Roger Ebert so admired him that he created the "Stanton-Walsh Rule," which states that "no movie featuring either Harry Dean Stanton or M. Emmet Walsh in a supporting role can be altogether bad." Ebert later admitted that Dream a Little Dream (1989), in which Stanton appeared, was a "clear violation" of this rule, though perhaps it is just the exception that proves the rule. While he almost exclusively played supporting roles, Stanton is the star of his last film, named for his character, Lucky (2017). It follows the spiritual journey of a ninety-year-old atheist.
