- DirectorJason ReitmanStarsElliot PageMichael CeraJennifer GarnerFaced with an unplanned pregnancy, an offbeat young woman makes a selfless decision regarding the unborn child.Juno is my all-time favorite film, and the first time I saw it was only about two months ago. I had always knew about Juno, however I never really had an interest in watching it, mainly because of the topic. Sitting down and watching a movie about teenage pregnancy wasn’t exactly high on my list of things I wanted to do with my time. But that all changed after I, funnily enough, played the video game Beyond: Two Souls. In this game the player takes control of Jodie Holmes, who, rightly, is voiced by and has the likeness of Ellen Page. This game ended up becoming one of my favorites ever as well, and that was in no small part thanks to the incredible performance from Page. I was so transfixed with this girl that I ended up watching Juno right away, and the rest as they say, is history. I literally cannot think of anything bad to say about this masterpiece. Seriously, go see it.
- DirectorBennett MillerStarsBrad PittRobin WrightJonah HillOakland A's general manager Billy Beane's successful attempt to assemble a baseball team on a lean budget by employing computer-generated analysis to acquire new players.Moneyball, for a long time, was my favorite movie of all-time. It was only recently surpassed by my number one movie in May of this year. The reason I love Moneyball so much is not just because it brought the incredible book to life so perfectly, but it made me fall in love with an aspect of baseball that I hadn’t really thought about before. The general managers, the front office personnel, everyone on the inside and how they managed their ball clubs. This movie is perfect, and I will forever be stunned that a non-important silent film won best picture over Moneyball at the Oscars. A silent film. In 2011. What a shame.
- DirectorRichard LinklaterStarsEthan HawkeJulie DelpyAndrea EckertA young man and woman meet on a train in Europe, and wind up spending one evening together in Vienna. Unfortunately, both know that this will probably be their only night together.
- DirectorMarc ForsterStarsWill FerrellEmma ThompsonDustin HoffmanI.R.S. auditor Harold Crick suddenly finds his mundane Chicago life to be the subject of narration only he can hear: narration that begins to affect his entire existence, from his work to his love life to his death.A Will Ferrell movie that is not in any way a comedy. This is a film that by telling somebody the most basic description of what it is about, they will be instantly intrigued. A man hears narration in his head that is describing his life. I will not tell you anything else. Go watch the movie to find out more. Stranger Than Fiction is a fantastic movie that features incredible performances from essentially everyone. Ferrell, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Dustin Hoffman, and Emma Thompson bring it their absolute all in this one. At the very least, it will make you want to play guitar.
- DirectorDarren AronofskyStarsNatalie PortmanMila KunisVincent CasselNina is a talented but unstable ballerina on the verge of stardom. Pushed to the breaking point by her artistic director and a seductive rival, Nina's grip on reality slips, plunging her into a waking nightmare. The last word uttered in Black Swan also happens to be my opinion on the movie, “Perfect”. This film blew me away the first time I watched it. I was glued to the screen from the opening frame, and it never takes a wrong step along its path. There is not a more perfectly made movie on this list than Black Swan. Even the two films listed ahead of it have maybe one or two things that I would change in each. Black Swan does not have that problem. It is perfect. Go see it right now.
- DirectorBruce McDonaldStarsElliot PageZie SouwandMaxwell McCabe-Lokos15-year-old Tracey Berkowitz is naked under a shower curtain at the back of a bus, looking for her little brother Sonny, who thinks he's a dog.The Tracey Fragments is based on a book of the same name that came out in 1998. It tells the story of a young girl who is looking for her lost brother. This movie is probably the most faithful movie adaptation of a book ever made, however this is probably because the author of the book, Maureen Medved, wrote the screenplay for the movie. The Tracey Fragments uses a substantial amount of split-screen, that is at first jarring, but at least for myself, I ended up really enjoying what it added. A 36% is what it holds currently on Rotten Tomatoes, and I honestly think that is a disgrace. I am not in any way ragging on Mulholland Drive, but that movie literally makes zero sense, and is beloved by film critics, and was even named the 28th best movie ever made. I think The Tracey Fragments deserves as much praise as a film like Mulholland Drive, and should be hailed as a masterpiece.
- DirectorDavid LoweryStarsCasey AffleckRooney MaraMcColm Cephas Jr.In this singular exploration of legacy, love, loss, and the enormity of existence, a recently deceased, white-sheeted ghost returns to his suburban home to try to reconnect with his bereft wife.A Ghost Story blew me away. This is a film that I had put off watching for around a year, and when I did, it was so much better than I ever could have imagined. Starring Casey Affleck as the ghost, and Rooney Mara as his wife, the film follows a recently deceased Affleck as he watches as an observer as life passes by. This is one of the most emotional and saddest movies that I have ever seen, and I mean that in a good way. Despite being incredibly sad, at the end I felt at peace, and I actually felt good after the movie concluded. There are some incredible scenes in this film, and you are just going to have to watch it for yourself to find out what they are.
- DirectorDrew BarrymoreStarsElliot PageDrew BarrymoreKristen WiigIn Bodeen, Texas, an indie-rock-loving misfit finds a way of dealing with small-town misery after discovering a roller-derby league in nearby Austin. The first time I watched Whip It about two months ago, I did not really think much of it. I thought it was a pretty good movie that I wasn’t going to think about much. However, I watched it a second time about a month later, and fell in love with it. Whip It is a film that is endlessly entertaining. I am serious. You will never be bored while watching this movie. I have seen it four times, and nothing has ever dragged in any of the viewings. Ellen Page, like usual, is exceptional in the role of Bliss Cavendar, a senior in high school whose mom had made her compete in beauty pageants for what seems like her whole life. However when the opportunity arrives for her to join a Roller Derby team, she takes advantage. This is Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut, and it really could not have gone better. Also, this film has probably the best romance scene in a non-romance movie ever. Just saying. Critics, audiences, i mean, everybody likes this movie, and it has rightfully developed a cult following after a disappointing showing in the box office. Give this one a look if you haven’t already.
- DirectorJared HessStarsJon HederEfren RamirezJon GriesA listless and alienated teenager decides to help his new friend win the class presidency in their small western high school, while he must deal with his bizarre family life back home.I grew up watching Napoleon Dynamite, as it is one of my dads all-time favorites. Watching it now I can really understand why, as despite being admittedly silly at many parts along the way, there is something about this film that sticks with you after watching. Maybe it’s the great music choices that really put you in the time period. Maybe it's the incredible characters, none of which are better than Jon Gries as Uncle Rico, who in my opinion is one of the best movie characters ever. Even if you can’t put your finger on exactly what is special about Napoleon Dynamite, there is no denying that it isn’t your normal silly comedy.
- DirectorSpike JonzeStarsJoaquin PhoenixAmy AdamsScarlett JohanssonIn a near future, a lonely writer develops an unlikely relationship with an operating system designed to meet his every need. Not often does a film 100% live up to the hype surrounding it. I had heard incredible things about the 2013 Spike Jonze film for years, and some even called it a masterpiece. However I have come to temper my expectations when a film receives such high praise. Children of Men and Being John Malkovich were also films that I had heard similar things about, and I was left vastly disappointed. Her is different, though. This is a movie that slowly builds and builds to in my opinion what is one of the best endings in cinematic history. Joaqin Pheonix is exceptional as the lead in this movie, in a role that is extremely hard to pull off. Scarlett Johansson is phenomenal as the voice of the Artificial Intelligence that Pheonix’s character falls in love with. And Amy Adams is perfect as a supporting character. Give this film a watch if you haven’t already.
- DirectorOlivier AssayasStarsKristen StewartLars EidingerSigrid BouazizA personal shopper in Paris refuses to leave the city until she makes contact with her twin brother who previously died there. Her life becomes more complicated when a mysterious person contacts her via text message.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsLeonardo DiCaprioJoseph Gordon-LevittElliot PageA thief who steals corporate secrets through the use of dream-sharing technology is given the inverse task of planting an idea into the mind of a C.E.O., but his tragic past may doom the project and his team to disaster.
- DirectorDamien ChazelleStarsRyan GoslingEmma StoneRosemarie DeWittWhile navigating their careers in Los Angeles, a pianist and an actress fall in love while attempting to reconcile their aspirations for the future.
- DirectorJames GunnStarsRainn WilsonElliot PageLiv TylerAfter his wife falls under the influence of a drug dealer, an everyday guy transforms himself into Crimson Bolt, a superhero with the best intentions, but lacking in heroic skills.
- DirectorPhil Alden RobinsonStarsKevin CostnerJames Earl JonesRay LiottaIowa farmer Ray Kinsella is inspired by a voice he can't ignore to pursue a dream he can hardly believe. Supported by his wife, Ray begins the quest by turning his ordinary cornfield into a place where dreams can come true.Field of Dreams is the baseball movie that literally anyone can watch and appreciate, even if they themselves don't necessarily like the sport. It is constantly listed as one of the best sport movies ever made, and Field of Dreams deserves that recognition. You get goosebumps when watching certain scenes from this film, and no matter how many times one watches it, those goosebumps always come. Forcing sentimentality is a problem that many movies have, but here, they find the perfect mix of it and pure baseball fun. Also, this movie has an ending that will bring a tear to almost anyone’s eye.
- DirectorDavid SladeStarsPatrick WilsonElliot PageSandra OhHayley's a smart, charming teenage girl. Jeff's a handsome, smooth fashion photographer. An Internet chat, a coffee shop meet-up, an impromptu fashion shoot back at Jeff's place. Jeff thinks it's his lucky night. He's in for a surprise.Another Ellen Page movies on this list, Hard Candy is what any torture movie should be. The emphasis is on the characters and the story, not the torture, and very little if any gore is shown. The scary part of torture is what you don’t see, and Hard Candy understands that. This was Ellen Page’s first American movie, and at 17 years old at the time of filming, she is absolutely fantastic. Patrick Wilson, who plays an alleged sexual predator, is really great here as well. Despite being hard to watch for some, if you want an incredibly interesting, albeit shocking movie definitely give Hard Candy a look.
- DirectorOliver StoneStarsAl PacinoDennis QuaidCameron DiazA behind-the-scenes look at the life-and-death struggles of modern-day gladiators and those who lead them.Any Given Sunday is the best football movie ever made. It is also the most ambitious football movie ever made. At over two and a half hours long, it is also probably the longest football movie ever made. Oliver Stone delivers a masterpiece with this telling of a gruesome football league that is possibly a satire of what the real NFL is actually like. Al Pacino gives one of his last great performances as a head coach who many believe to be washed up. Dennis Quaid is used sporadically, but when he is on screen, he is great. He and Al Pacino share the best scene in the entire movie near the end. Also, casting Jamie Fox as the up and coming quarterback that ends up taking the league by storm was perfect. The only wrong step Any Given Sunday takes is having Cameron Diaz play an owner of a football team. Every scene that she is in she essentially ruins, but luckily her scenes are some of the least important in the entire film.
- DirectorRidley ScottStarsHarrison FordRutger HauerSean YoungA blade runner must pursue and terminate four replicants who stole a ship in space and have returned to Earth to find their creator.
- DirectorDavid FincherStarsMorgan FreemanBrad PittKevin SpaceyTwo detectives, a rookie and a veteran, hunt a serial killer who uses the seven deadly sins as his motives. The first time I watched Seven, I was in awe. I sat in my seat for fifteen minutes after the movie ended, and just pondered over what I just saw. David Fincher is one of the greatest directors to ever work, and I believe that Seven is his finest film. Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman are incredible as detectives trying to solve a series of gruesome murders that seem to align with the seven deadly sins, hence the title. The entire film is a suspense driven thrill ride, all leading up to one of the greatest climaxes for a film of the past fifty years.
- DirectorMichael LanderStarsCillian MurphyElliot PageSusan SarandonA train accident in rural Nebraska gradually unveils a mystery involving the town's bank clerk.Another Ellen Page movie, however after watching, it is hard to remember that she was even in it. Cillian Murphy, who played Scarecrow in the Christopher Nolan batman movies, as well as being in movies like Sunshine and Red Eye, steals the show here. Murphy delivers a performance of a lifetime as a man with split-personality disorder, who, after a certain event, has trouble balancing which part of his personality is dominant. Outside of the ending, I believe Peacock is practically perfect, and it being released straight to DVD is a crime against cinema.
- DirectorDanny BoyleStarsCillian MurphyRose ByrneChris EvansA team of international astronauts is sent on a dangerous mission to reignite the dying Sun with a nuclear fission bomb in 2057.
- DirectorJames GunnStarsChris PrattZoe SaldanaDave BautistaThe Guardians struggle to keep together as a team while dealing with their personal family issues, notably Star-Lord's encounter with his father, the ambitious celestial being Ego.
- DirectorWoody AllenStarsOwen WilsonRachel McAdamsKathy BatesWhile on a trip to Paris with his fiancée's family, a nostalgic screenwriter finds himself mysteriously going back to the 1920s every day at midnight.
- DirectorPeter WeirStarsJim CarreyEd HarrisLaura LinneyAn insurance salesman discovers his whole life is actually a reality TV show. The Truman Show is one of those movies that just by hearing the premise alone, you are instantly interested. A man has grown up in what seems to him like a normal life, however he has actually been a part of a TV show the entire time, centered around him. Literally everyone besides Jim Carrey is in on it, and it is absolutely fantastic. Carrey shows off his dramatic chops here, and this along with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Carrey shows just how immensely talented he is. The Truman Show will not disappoint, and is one of the better movies of the 1990’s.
- DirectorGlenn FicarraJohn RequaStarsSteve CarellRyan GoslingJulianne MooreA middle-aged husband's life changes dramatically when his wife asks him for a divorce. He seeks to rediscover his manhood with the help of a newfound friend, Jacob, learning to pick up girls at bars.
