- DirectorBassek Ba KobhioStarsAndré WilmsMarisa BerensonAlex DescasCameroonian filmmaker Bassek ba Kobhio provides a fascinating revisionist perspective on Albert Schweitzer, Noble Peace Prize winner and secular saint of the colonial era. Like FRANTZ FANON: BLACK SKIN, WHITE MASK, this film begins to rewrite the history of colonialism from the point of view of the colonized. LE GRAND BLANC DE LAMBARÉNÉ is not, however, a facile exercise in iconoclasm but rather a deeply-felt lament for a missed opportunity, for a cross-cultural encounter between Africa and Europe which never happened. The film reveals that the ultimate tragedy of colonialism may have been its refusal to see and value the colonized as autonomous, creative human beings. The film's epigraph, ironically, is a famous remark by Schweitzer himself: "All we can do is allow others to discover us, as we discover them."

- DirectorEmily Soipanoi Enole KapirontoiNoolarami Enole KapirontoiAlex K. KoshalStarsNoah KaaiOtumoi Ole KeekoNickson Ole KirrokorThis short documentary is the innovative and collaborative creation of a group of Kenyan Maasai pastoralists, illustrating how they perceive climate change and other socioeconomic and environmental changes. The Maasai filmmakers directed, storyboarded, shot and edited it in September 2011, in the Maasai Mara, after receiving a short training in video production. With humor, the Maasai filmmakers tell multiple stories of environmental changes and related coping strategies from their perspective, in their own voice; and show that the story is bigger than just climate change. There is also land privatization and unregulated tourism, which also affect herding and the capacity to cope with climatic changes. Pastoralists feel, recognize and cope with these interconnected transformations, and use video to communicate their concerns to a broader audience.

- DirectorKimi TakesueA high society wedding, bustling city streets, a center for former child soldiers, a nightclub full of music and laughter: these are the many faces of today's Uganda, as wonderfully captured by filmmaker Kimi Takesue. Whether exploring the pulsating energy of the city or contemplating quiet moments in the country, her artful camera compositions and the lyrical pacing of the film allow us to truly engage and process the foreign land on our own terms. Documenting Uganda while it deals with day-to-day realities and the aftermath of its civil wars, Takesue, well aware of her perspective as an outsider, strives for simple, unadorned honesty. Employing a largely observational style, Takesue allows the sight and sounds-and the people-of Uganda to speak for themselves. Usually the people she records simply ignore the camera, but when someone does engage-whether it's a group of school children clamoring for their moment in front of the lens or a young man asking the title question-the barriers between filmmaker, subject, and audience give way for breathtaking cinematic epiphanies.
- DirectorMargarida CardosoStarsLicínio AzevedoCamilo De SousaRuy GuerraThe first cultural act of Mozambique's government right after independence, in 1975, was creating the National Institute of Cinema [NIC]. The new President, Samora Machel, had a strong conscience of the cinematic potential while creating an image for a new socialist nation. All over the country, cinema road units were screening NIC's most popular production, a newsreel untitled Kuxa Kanema, which means The Birth of Cinema. People's Republic of Mozambique became the Republic of Mozambique and NIC, once a great enterprise, was reduced to abandoned rooms and corridors, where the staff stood patiently waiting for retirement. The building was destroyed by a fire back in 1991, and the visual documents that witness the first eleven years of independence - the years of the socialist revolution - were rotting in an out-building, and about to be forgotten. From these and other living testimonies, we will recover the path of a nation's ideal, which has fallen apart, day by day, together with "one cinema for the people", and with the dreams from those who believed that Mozambique could one day become a different country.
