Ranked in order of preference, with the name of the movie in which the great performance takes place listed in the description. Generally, I prefer subtlety to grandstanding in thespians, hence the absence of notable performers such as Bette Davis or Joan Crawford. Even the most ostentatious of the performances below (like Dietrich's or Rowlands'), however, come from a place of deep interiority and none amongst the chosen can be accused of scenery-chewing for the sake of it.
