- DirectorJoseph KaneStarsVera RalstonDon KellyPaul FixIn Central California, hitchhiker Dan Flynn comes across drunken Ben Monks, passed out at the wheel of his parked car. While Dan is combing through Ben's wallet to locate his address, Chip Klamp drives by and, after accusing Dan of planning to rob Ben, proclaims that Ben is "a bad man" and drives away. Dan drives Ben home, where Ben's wife Angela invites him in. Angie, who married the much older Ben because he promised her there was millions of dollars worth of oil on his farm, has grown weary of his alcoholism and abusiveness. Attracted to Dan, she offers him a job on the farm, and with no other prospects, he accepts. In the morning, Ben gruffly negotiates a low wage for Dan, and over the next days pushes him to work long hours. One night, after Angie informs Dan about the oil, he is about to kiss her when Ben drives up. Two weeks go by during which Dan chafes under Ben's ill-treatment. One afternoon, upon seeing Ben whipping his overburdened horse, Dan tries to intercede and when Ben snaps the whip on Dan's back, Dan punches him. Back at the house, Angie defends Ben as a sad old man, after which Dan lashes out at her. When he apologizes, she begs him to stay. Later, Chip, who used to date Angie, informs her that he has had his neighboring land surveyed and discovered there is no oil, then tells Ben that Angie is having an affair with Dan. A drunken Ben drives home without realizing that young runaway Gilda Hadley is hiding in his back seat. At the farm, when Ben accuses Angie of cheating, she retorts that he lied about the oil and calls him old, prompting him to hit her, after which he pleads with her not to leave him. Ben retreats to the barn, where he finds Gilda and agrees to hide her in the loft. Just then, Dan arrives with the veterinarian, hoping to save Ben's ailing horse, but they are too late. Ben throws a bottle at Dan, who attacks him, but their fight is cut short by the entrance of the sheriff, who is searching for Gilda. Despite the sheriff's offer to share the reward offered by her wealthy father, Ben declares that he has not seen the girl. Meanwhile, Angie visits Dan as he packs to leave. Assuming she told Ben that they were lovers, Dan rejects her advances, then returns to the barn to demand his pay from Ben. Finding Ben on the ground, Dan assumes he is passed out and takes his car, not knowing that Gilda is again hiding in it. On the road, Gilda tells Dan that she is running away from her boyfriend, and that she dropped her locket in the Monkses' barn. Chip sees Ben's car pass and heads to the barn, where the sheriff has found Ben, dead from a head wound. Upon spotting the locket on the ground, Chip pockets it surreptitiously. That night, Gilda admits to Dan that she is fleeing to protest her father's remarriage, two years after her mother's death. Although she tries to seduce Dan, he firmly rebuffs the teenager, instead offering to help her return home. As soon as they stop, however, Dan is spotted by the police and arrested for Ben's murder. At the trial, Angie vouches for Dan's trustworthiness but her testimony about his fights with Ben damage Dan's case. With strong circumstantial evidence against Dan, who was the last to see Ben alive, his only hope lies in locating Gilda, who was watching from the loft and so may have seen the real killer. His lawyer is granted three days to find her, and while they wait, Chip visits Angie to demand her attentions. She throws him out, and after he drops his wallet, she discovers the locket inside and brings it to Dan's lawyer. Soon after, Gilda turns herself in and takes the witness stand, where she recounts what happened the night Ben died: After the other men leave, Ben climbs into the loft and tries to assault Gilda. In self-defense, she pushes him to the ground, and thinking he is merely unconscious, flees to his car. After exhibiting Gilda's locket as evidence of her presence in the barn, Dan's lawyer asks for more time to uncover the murder weapon, and soon a bloody anvil is found buried in the hay in the barn. The judge rules that the death occurred accidentally when Ben fell from the loft and hit his head on the anvil, and Dan is freed. As Chip is brought before the judge to be punished for withholding evidence, Gilda's father offers Dan a job in Los Angeles and Gilda hugs Dan goodbye. As he is leaving, Dan hears his lawyer thank Angie for her help, and he tells her she is a "swell gal." Although Angie is in love with Dan, she bravely bids him goodbye.
- DirectorEdward MannStarsRobert HuttonPatricia WrightPaul RichardsWhen movie actor Brad Cameron is at Federated Studios in Hollywood for wardrobe fittings, he learns that Scandal magazine has published a false cover story about him being "caught in the act" with a young actress, June Trapping. Brad complains to his agent, Jerry Dexter, who believes that the story may have been planted by June's agent, Herman Todd. Despite Brad's declaration of innocence, his wife Marge remains unconvinced. When Brad goes to explain to Champ Winter, his best friend and June's boyfriend, Champ does not believe him and slugs him. To protect his client, Jerry goes to see June and Todd, and demands that June retract her story or he will use information he has to smear her. Meanwhile, at Scandal magazine, publisher Leland Miller assigns Jess Blancher, the writer who fabricated the story about Brad, to cover a new "exposé." At Federated, studio boss Sidney Wood tells Jerry and Brad that due to adverse public reaction, he is forced to postpone Brad's next picture and will not be renewing his contract. Unsettled by the disastrous turn of events, Marge leaves Brad, causing him great anguish. In a bar, a newspaper columnist takes Brad to meet Alice Yoland, one of his former co-stars, who is now an alcoholic due to her career being ruined by bad publicity. Later, Brad returns to the bar and learns from singer Billie Wayne, who is having an affair with Todd in hopes of advancing her career, that Alice has committed suicide. Alice's suicide prompts Brad and Jerry decide to sue the magazine and studio boss Wood agrees to support them. Brad then phones Blancher, posing as an informant in order to entrap him, and they agree to meet at the magazine's office. However, when Blancher is murdered, Brad is arrested and charged with the crime. Although Brad swears to his lawyer, Marty Ellis, that he is innocent and can not remember anything about shooting Blancher, he admits to carrying a gun, which is now missing. Later Marge tells Marty that Brad is not a murderer and gives him money for use in Brad's defense. Marty decides to try the case in front of a judge, instead of a jury. At the trial, Miller testifies about finding Blancher's body and admits that the writer frequently received death threats. Todd then testifies that Brad visited him the night of the murder and, after assaulting him, left in a violent rage to go to the Scandal office. Brad, now desperate, tells Marty that Billie might know something that could exonerate him. Marge is in the courtroom when Brad gives his testimony. He recalls entering the Scandal offices on the night of the murder. After Brad demands that the magazine print a retraction of the story, Blancher tries to throw him out. They struggle and after Blancher falls and hits his head on a filing cabinet, Brad leaves. In the present, Brad swears he did not shoot Blancher and cannot account for the missing gun. In his summation, Marty suggests that there are many victims of the magazine who could have committed the crime and suggests that Todd had a motive because Blancher could have exposed him as the source for his story on Brad. Marty then calls Billie to the stand and she testifies that earlier that day she was at Todd's apartment when two police officers discovered Brad's gun there. Todd is in the courtroom and leaps to his feet, claiming a frame-up. Marty then reveals that Todd's fingerprints have been found on the gun and asks for the charge against Brad to be dropped. The judge adjourns court to give him time to make a decision and releases Brad into Marty's custody. Later, Todd confesses and Brad is exonerated. At Federated, Marty explains that Todd was the only person who knew Brad was going to the magazine's office and concluded that after Brad left, Todd shot Blancher. Wood tells Brad that new contracts are being prepared for him and Billie and that he will be starting a new picture in two weeks. Brad then goes to his car where Madge is waiting and they drive off together.

- DirectorR.G. SpringsteenStarsPenny EdwardsRobert ClarkeRoss FordL.T. Mitchell of Acme Amusement Enterprises is the frontman for a group of slot-machine racketeers. During a meeting in his office with his lawyer William Carrington and his mobster partner Monk Walter, he discusses the new anti-gambling ordinances which the district attorney and the police are taking seriously. Carrington, who is uncomfortable with Walter's violent business tactics, advises that they lie low for a while, but Walter feels that too much money is at stake to pull back. Always ready to use physical coercion to motivate local business owners, he wants to keep the current machines in operation, while expanding the presence of slot machines into new locations. Their heated discussion is interrupted by Fred Palmer, an overeager, young lawyer, who has just opened a law office down the hall with his partner, Tom Reagan. Fred's invitation to their open house party is rudely brushed off by Carrington, but Tom convinces young stenographer Mildred Anderson to join the party. Mildred is attracted to Fred, and Fred's mother Martha approves. Though she feels ill, Martha is also quietly celebrating, because she has put Fred through law school by running a neighborhood store and doing odd jobs. When the law firm is not immediately successful, Tom considers an offer to work with the district attorney, while Fred eagerly agrees to represent Walter, who is arrested on charges of possessing nitroglycerin explosives. Before the trial, many advise Fred to have Walter plead guilty, but by switching the exhibited bottle of nitro for a bottle of water, and claiming false evidence, Fred wins the case. Walter is free to murder a slot machine manufacturer who has raised his prices, and then has Mitchell set up a corporation to buy the murdered man's company under the name Bancroft Corporation. Although he is unhappy with Fred's clients, Tom works on the Bancroft contracts, unaware that the company is owned by Mitchell. Mildred, who is courting Fred, convinces him to break off from the mobsters. However, when his mother's heart condition worsens, Fred feels compelled to make the law office a success and agrees to represent Walter when a witness comes forward, claiming to have seen him at the scene of the factory owner's murder. Tom, who has discovered Bancroft Corporation's connection with Mitchell, insists that Fred drop the disreputable clients. Fred refuses, so Tom dissolves the partnership and takes the district attorney position. During the trial Fred and Tom represent opposite sides of the case. When the witness, who acts frightened, refuses to identify Walter, however, the case is dismissed and Walter is again free. Fred, who is now able to provide a comfortable living for his mother and himself, marries Mildred, but their honeymoon is interrupted when Mitchell learns that the police are looking for evidence to link him with the factory owner's murder. Fred feels confident he can defend him, but Mitchell wants to plea bargain. To Fred's horror, Walter, who fears he will be implicated if Mitchell pleads guilty, kills Mitchell in front of Fred, and makes it look like suicide. Fred then returns home to find that Mildred and his mother have left him, hoping that he will reconsider his current course. In the morning, Fred sends Tom a list of Walter's henchmen and promises to provide evidence by two o'clock that afternoon. He then proceeds to Mitchell's house to pick up corroborating papers that Mitchell had told him about, and encounters Walter there searching for the evidence. Walter and Fred fight, and Fred escapes to his car. Walter's thug, Johnny Mayer, is waiting to drive Walter, and they pursue Fred. Fred drives to the courthouse, but as he runs up the front steps, Walter shoots him and nabs the papers, just as Tom approaches. While pursuing Walter in a police car, the police shoot Johnny, whose car crashes, and Walter is killed trying to escape. Later in the hospital, Tom reports to the wounded Fred that the district attorney's office talked to the Bar Association, and decided against further investigation. After Tom says he wants to return to their partnership, Fred and Mildred make plans to finish their honeymoon.

RondeauStarsRobert KnappLinda LawsonLisabeth HushOne night, while trying to arrest racketeer boss Delinko, hard-bitten police sergeant Steve Keenan is forced to kill the gangster in self-defense. At the squad room the next day, after officer Duncan accuses Steve of having a vendetta against Delinko because the racketeer was living with Steve's one-time girl friend Laura Wallace, Steve vehemently denies the charge; however, Delinko is the second man Steve has killed who dated Laura. Steve's brother Harry, who is also a police officer, assures him that everyone is glad Delinko is dead and congratulates him on yet another success in his police career. Harry, however, cautions Steve to be careful and shows him a note found at the Delinko apartment warning Steve that "No matter what the laws calls it, I call it murder." Steve is unconcerned by the threat and visits Lucky's Club to apologize to his girl friend Gerri, a singer at the bar, for standing her up the previous evening. Meanwhile, Laura has Delinko's chauffeur Mouse drive her to a jewelry store near Lucky's. Recognizing Delinko's car, Steve interrogates Mouse about the name of the note's author, but Mouse claims no one in the crime syndicate cared enough about Delinko's death to write the note. When Laura returns to the suite of the new racketeer boss, Chessner, he accuses her of planning to meet Steve and reminds her that she chose racketeering money over the sergeant's good looks. He then reminds her that since Delinko is dead, he has inherited everything, including her. Later, when Laura comes to the police bail out Chessner's gunman Junior, she tells Steve that she never stopped loving him and, as she walks out the door, Junior sees Laura and Steve together. That night, at the apartment that Steve shares with Harry, Harry's girl friend Sandy calls Steve a "headline hungry" cop, but Steve accuses her of secretly liking him more than Harry and forces her to kiss him. Later, after Harry shows Steve another threatening note warning "You're a dead man," Steve asks bar owner Lucky to use his underworld contacts to identify who might want to kill him. Meanwhile, Harry, concerned that Sandy prefers Steve, questions her about why she is waiting to accept his marriage proposal, adding that Steve has already stolen one of his girl friends. Late that night, Sandy goes to Harry's apartment and finds Harry lying beaten on the floor. When Sandy calls Steve at Lucky's, Gerri picks up the phone, and, hearing Sandy's voice, assumes Steve is having another affair. Steve believes that someone mistook Harry for him and suspects Chessner of the crime, but when Steve confronts Chessner at his apartment that night, Chessner reiterates that no one regrets Delinko's death. Once outside, Steve finds Junior is following him and knocks him out, later learning that Junior was killed just minutes after Steve hit him. Back at Lucky's, Gerri laments that waiting for Steve is pointless, since he will never recognize her love for him. Lucky concurs and warns her that Steve will break her heart. Meanwhile, as the police look for Steve in connection with Junior's death, Chessner has sent Duke to kill Steve to avenge Junior. Harry sends Sandy to Lucky's to warn Steve that both the police and the gangster are after him. Steve then learns from Lucky that Delinko's brother is in town and is possibly seeking revenge. Realizing Laura may have information useful to him, Steve calls Chessner's and asks to see her. While Laura is on the phone, Chessner orders her to lure Steve to his apartment. Driving Sandy's car, Steve arrives at the apartment and using Georgie, Chessner's lackey and elevator boy, as a shield, at bursts into the apartment at gunpoint, throwing Georgie into Chessner's gunfire. Escaping unharmed, Steve returns to Lucky's, where a tearful Laura calls to tell him Chessner is coming to kill him. Moments later, Duncan and Mouse come to the club looking for Steve. Steve disarms Mouse and forces him to take him and Sandy to Delinko's brother's hotel room, where the brother, seated at a table, tells Steve that Delinko's death was not unexpected. When the man does not respond to Steve's bullying or his accusations about writing the threatening notes, Steve turns over the table to find that Delinko's brother is handicapped and wears leg braces. Realizing his mistake, Steve leaves with Sandy for her apartment, where Sandy insists he stay even though this puts her own life in peril. Thinking about the series of incidents, Steve questions why the man behind the threats did not kill Harry, instead of beating him up, when he mistook him for Steve. Finally realizing that threats are a convenient cover-up, Steve is about to tell Sandy that it is Harry who seeks to kill him, when his brother walks in with his gun pointed at Steve. As a demented Harry explains that he has no identity of his own because Steve has stolen the limelight since they were young, Steve moves away from Sandy, allowing her to pull out a gun she has hidden in her purse while Steve grabs Harry's gun. Harry lurches at Steve with a letter opener, challenging Steve to kill him and asking if he is callous enough to kill his own brother. In his struggle, Harry falls back into Sandy's gun, which fires and kills him. Sandy weeps and accuses Steve of never showing Harry nor anyone else any love. Later at the police station, Steve learns that Chessner was arrested for Georgie's death and that Laura is looking for him. Ready to begin a new life, Steve ignores Laura's call and meets Gerri. After admitting that they do not know each other well, Steve proposes to her and Gerri tells him that her love for him is all that she needs to know.

Deciding to climb up to the top of a ridge, the boys hide their bicycles in brush to prevent theft and set off. Upon reaching the top, however, Bobby stumbles and when Mickey tries to catch him, both fall into a ravine, landing on a shallow shelf, halfway down the dangerous incline. When Bobby's father George returns home from work to his wife Janet and younger children Sammy and Janey, Janet tells him that Bobby is late in coming home, but George decides that Bobby may simply have been delayed by a flat tire on his bicycle. Meanwhile, Max Goodwin, Mickey's father, learns from his housekeeper, Sophie, that his son is late for dinner. Later, when Bobby has not returned, George phones Sophie for news of the boys and also checks with Bobby's homeroom teacher, who suggests that he contact the sheriff's station. Darkness has fallen and the boys, cold and scared, are still stuck on the ledge, hoping that people are looking for them. Bobby prays for protection throughout the night. After George unsuccessfully searches the neighborhood, he phones Max, who is dining at a restaurant with Alfred Gledhill and another business associate, and Max agrees to meet George at the sheriff's station. At George's request, Lt. Andy Flynn issues a bulletin to all patrol cars to be on the lookout for the boys and then arranges for a rescue squad, composed of professionals and volunteers, to be ready to begin a search at first light. George invites Max, who feels that he could have been a better, more accessible father to Mickey, to his house to wait for news. While they are there, a rock is thrown through a window. An attached note informs the fathers that if they want to see their boys again, they are to deliver ten thousand dollars in cash to a mailbox on an outlying road. Although George wants to inform the police about the kidnapping, both Janet and Max dissuade him and convince him to pay the ransom demand. At dawn, instead of joining Flynn's rescue crew to comb the nearby foothills, Max delivers the cash he has taken from his office safe to the drop point. George, meanwhile, decides to call off the search as the men and equipment might be needed for real emergencies, and locates Flynn close to the granite quarry. On the ledge, Bobby and Mickey hear an approaching helicopter, but it passes overhead and leaves without locating them. Although angered by the fathers' meddling, Flynn sets in motion a plan to trap the "kidnapper" when he appears to pick up the cash and also requests assistance from F.B.I. agent MacKay. Using stakeouts in unmarked vehicles, Flynn closes in on the kidnapper after he collects the cash and from his car's registration learns that he is Gledhill. Max then explains that Gledhill was with him when he learned that Mickey and Bobby were missing. The deputies pursue Gledhill in a high-speed car chase, which ends at a roadblock. Flynn and MacKay arrest Gledhill, who confesses to the extortion plot and then admits that he has no idea where the boys might be. Meanwhile, the blasting crew arrives at the quarry to begin the day's work. After Flynn reactivates the search party, he suddenly remembers that the blasting is about to begin and dispatches a squad car, which arrives just in time to prevent the explosions. The helicopter is in the air once more and the search crew is advancing through the area on foot when one of the men discovers the bicycles, which George identifies. As the helicopter approaches them again, the boys wave and this time are spotted by the crew. The ledge is impossible to reach on foot, so Flynn orders the helicopter to lower a harness and, in turn, both boys are lifted off the ledge into the helicopter. Bobby and Mickey are then reunited with their fathers.
