- DirectorAndrey KonchalovskiyAlbert MagnoliStarsSylvester StalloneKurt RussellTeri HatcherFramed by their ruthless arch-nemesis, a pair of mismatched LAPD officers must put their differences aside to get even with the brutal crime baron who sent them to rot in a maximum-security prison. If I'd ever have to recommend the BEST buddy cop it would probably Lethal Weapon or 48 Hrs. If I'd ever have to recommend the MOST 80's buddy cop it would be Tango & Cash. While this one's far from the best it's still a great watch for all the stupid dialogues, the try-hard-ness, the music and of course that shower scene that best represents this movie.
- DirectorRichard DonnerStarsChristopher ReeveMargot KidderGene HackmanAn alien orphan is sent from his dying planet to Earth, where he grows up to become his adoptive home's first and greatest superhero. This movie gets everything right except for maybe the ending. Christopher Reeve is a great Superman (although I'm convinced Brandon Routh would've topped him in a GOOD Superman movie), Margot Kidder is a great Lois Lane, Gene Hackman is a great Lex Luthor and Richard Donner is a great director. This movie isn't for Superman fans, it's for everyone. And it's amazing.
- DirectorJacques TourneurStarsRobert MitchumJane GreerKirk DouglasA private eye escapes his past to run a gas station in a small town, but his past catches up with him. Now he must return to the big city world of danger, corruption, double crosses, and duplicitous dames.Sadly I have to admit to not have seen probably more than ten film noirs. But I can hardly imagine a black and white movie that looks better as Out of the Past and has more cite-worthy exchanges. And I'd like to believe I'm very imaginative.
- DirectorStan WinstonStarsMichael JacksonPat DadeAmy SmallmanThe mayor of a nameless town gathers a mob to confront a hermit living in a "haunted house," but when the mob arrives, the man has a few tricks up his sleeve to convince them that he's not that bad.Yes, I put Michael Jackson's Ghosts on this list. Because it has the special effects, it has the music, it has THE Michael Jackson!
- DirectorBaz LuhrmannStarsLeonardo DiCaprioClaire DanesJohn LeguizamoShakespeare's famous play is updated to the hip modern suburb of Verona still retaining its original dialogue. It's Romeo and Juliet. Also it's guns instead of swords, crazy editing, great soundtrack, great performances, great dialogues (okay, that's on Shakespeare) and of course it's Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. And is that Paul Rudd in there too..?
- DirectorSimon WincerStarsBilly ZaneKristy SwansonTreat WilliamsThe Phantom, descendent of a line of African superheroes, travels to New York City to thwart a wealthy criminal genius from obtaining three magic skulls which would give him the secret to ultimate power. This movie is pure fun. It is from a time when superhero movies had to have good villains instead of only good heroes. It's beautiful to look at and it just gets everything right.
- DirectorJon HurwitzHayden SchlossbergStarsJason BiggsAlyson HanniganSeann William ScottJim, Michelle, Stifler, and their friends reunite in East Great Falls, Michigan for their high school reunion. You know how those reunion movies or tv shows usually aren't that good (e.g. X-Files)? American Reunion IS that good! Nobody needs it but we're better off with it.
- DirectorMartin BrestStarsEddie MurphyJudge ReinholdJohn AshtonA freewheeling Detroit cop pursuing a murder investigation finds himself dealing with the very different culture of Beverly Hills.Beverly Hills Cop is just perfect! Eddie Murphy is fast-talking without being annoying yet. The music is great. It's funny. It has great action. The opening car chase couldn't be more generic and boring on paper - not in Beverly Hills Cop. And that goes for pretty much everything in the movie.
- DirectorFrank DarabontStarsTim RobbinsMorgan FreemanBob GuntonOver the course of several years, two convicts form a friendship, seeking consolation and, eventually, redemption through basic compassion.Because of course one has to have The Shawshank Redemption on their favorite movies IMDB list.
- DirectorTonino ValeriiStarsTerence HillHenry FondaJean MartinA young, easy-going gunman worships and competes with a famed gunfighter, insisting that he must face down a gang of 150 outlaws before he can retire.Spaghetti western fans probably get a lot out of My Name Is Nobody. I don't know, I'm not a spaghetti western fan. Still, I get a ton out of this movie. Especially out of the score.
(Only ever seen dubbed.) - DirectorPaul FeigStarsSandra BullockMichael McDonaldMelissa McCarthyAn uptight FBI Special Agent is paired with a foul-mouthed Boston cop to take down a ruthless drug lord. This is probably the best modern buddy cop. And it's all thanks to an amazing Sandra Bullock, a great Melissa McCarthy and of course to Paul Feig.
- DirectorTim BurtonStarsMichael KeatonJack NicholsonKim BasingerThe Dark Knight of Gotham City begins his war on crime with his first major enemy being Jack Napier, a criminal who becomes the clownishly homicidal Joker.I don't think that I will every favourite another Batman movie over this one. It just is so damn good. Michael Keaton's Bruce Wayne seems just like the weird guy who'd dress up as a bat at night (like Bruce Wayne should seem). Jack Nicholson's Joker is fun in a very creepy, terrifying way (like Joker should be). Danny Elfman's Score (next to Superman's) is the best superhero movie score ever. And the costume, oh the costume - where has that nice yellow bat-symbol gone these days?
- DirectorPeter BergStarsDwayne JohnsonSeann William ScottChristopher WalkenA tough aspiring chef is hired to bring home a mobster's son from the Amazon but becomes involved in the fight against an oppressive town operator and the search for a legendary treasure. The Rundown is just like those 80's action movies where the astonishingly built guy is on a one man mission to kick ass. And kicking ass Dwayne Johnson does. Arnold Schwarzenegger even passed the torch at the beginning, how can one argue against that?
- DirectorDon BluthGary GoldmanStarsMeg RyanJohn CusackChristopher LloydThe last surviving child of the Russian Royal Family joins two con men to reunite with her grandmother, the Dowager Empress, while the undead Rasputin seeks her death. The story of Anastasia's one of those things one shouldn't use as a foundation for a children's movie. They did it anyway, changed almost everything about Anastasia and made the best Disney animated classic that's not a Disney animated classic. It's got the songs, the sweet pet, the love story, the wizard villain and of course beautiful visuals.
- DirectorDon BluthGary GoldmanStarsMatt DamonDrew BarrymoreBill PullmanA young man learns that he has to find a hidden Earth ship before an enemy alien species does in order to secure the survival of humanity.Screenplay credit: Joss Whedon. 'Nuff said.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsJamie BellAndy SerkisDaniel CraigIntrepid reporter Tintin and Captain Haddock set off on a treasure hunt for a sunken ship commanded by Haddock's ancestor. It's just like Indiana Jones! But with weird looking CGI characters! And the best long shot ever (sorry Serenity intro)!
- DirectorSam RaimiStarsBruce CampbellSarah BerryDan HicksAsh Williams, the lone survivor of an earlier onslaught of flesh-possessing spirits, holes up in a cabin with a group of strangers while the demons continue their attack.Evil Dead II is a great mix of Evil Dead's scariness and Army of Darkness's silliness. There are so many good scenes to talk about but that would spoil the whole movie so I leave it at: It's Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi at their best.
- DirectorKevin SmithStarsShannen DohertyJeremy LondonJason LeeBoth dumped by their girlfriends, two best friends seek refuge in the local mall.People sure love to crap at Kevin Smith these days. And they love to crap on Mallrats since 1995. I don't. I love Mallrats! It's stupid, harmless fun with a lot of good dialogues (spooning, superhero's sex organs etc.). Yep, I'm a Mallrats-lover.
(Also it has a J. Scott Campbell comic book cover in the title sequence from before he got kinda boring.) - DirectorHenry KosterStarsJames StewartMaureen O'HaraFabianMr. Hobbs wants to spend a quiet holiday at the beach, but his wife has invited all their family to stay with them.I love old comedies and I especially love Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation. I watch it about every other year and don't see myself getting tired of it ever. It's a great "vacation" from the mean spirited comedies of today.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsChristian BaleHugh JackmanScarlett JohanssonAfter a tragic accident, two stage magicians in 1890s London engage in a battle to create the ultimate illusion while sacrificing everything they have to outwit each other. With Nolan's apparent fetish to always explain how everything in his movies work it's kind of funny he actually made a film about illusionists trying to find out how each other's tricks work. And here it... works. The Prestige is Nolan's best movie!
(Book's still better though.) - DirectorDon CoscarelliStarsBruce CampbellOssie DavisBob IvyWhen residents of their nursing home start dying of dubious causes, an aged Elvis and an African-American senior who claims to be President John F. Kennedy discover that the perpetrator is an Egyptian mummy with murderous intentions.I really don't know where to put this movie. Is Bubba Ho-Tep comedy? Horror? Drama? Does Bruce Campbell really star as Elvis? Does Davis as Kennedy? Does it matter?
- DirectorJohn WooStarsTom CruiseDougray ScottThandiwe NewtonIMF agent Ethan Hunt is sent to Sydney to find and destroy a genetically modified disease called "Chimera".If a film series only has good movies I try not to put everyone on this list, so for Mission: Impossible I chose the one I love the most: The second one! 1) John Woo. 2) Tom Cruise's longish hair. 3) Thandie Newton. 4) Those ridiculous mask games. 5) Everything else.
- DirectorRichard LinklaterStarsKeanu ReevesWinona RyderRobert Downey Jr.An undercover cop in a not-too-distant future becomes involved with a dangerous new drug and begins to lose his own identity as a result.Every now and then I like to reread Philip K. Dick's A Scanner Darkly. It's such a good book. I don't know why I don't just watch Richard Linklater's adaptation because it too is such good stuff. It looks phenomenal, the actors make the crazy dialogues just work and the movie's scramble suit is probably the best realization one could've come up with.
- DirectorGuy RitchieStarsHenry CavillArmie HammerAlicia VikanderIn the early 1960s, CIA agent Napoleon Solo and KGB operative Illya Kuryakin participate in a joint mission against a mysterious criminal organization, which is working to proliferate nuclear weapons.I'd say this is Guy Ritchie's style perfected. Every character moves completely unnatural, speaks unnatural but it all comes together as a great work of art. Hard to explain, just watch.
- DirectorMatthew VaughnStarsColin FirthTaron EgertonSamuel L. JacksonA spy organisation recruits a promising street kid into the agency's training program, while a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius. What if he made James Bond more graphic? More stylish?
