Foreign Language Film Submissions to the 89th Academy Awards held in 2017 to get an Oscar Nomination in the Best Non-English Movie Category
85 COUNTRIES IN COMPETITION FOR 2016 FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM OSCAR!
Since 1956 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) presents annually an Academy Award (widely known as Oscar) to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. Lots of film industries of various independent states and autonomous regions were invited to submit the best film of the year from their country. The submitted films of the year 2016 selection process had to be first released theatrically in their home countries between 1 October 2015 and 30 September 2016. The deadline for the submissions was 3 October 2016. A total record number of 89 countries submitted a film before this deadline. At 11 October 2016 the Academy announced a list of eligible contenders from 85 countries. This is a new record in the history of the foreign language award category which celebrates its 60th anniversary!
78 male [♂] and 17 female [♀] directors (also a new record) are responsible for the realization of the submitted foreign language films in 2016. This relative high number is due to the fact that five films are realized by a director duo. Among the Submissions there are in total 5 documentaries and 1 animated feature. The Arabian Peninsula country Yemen has submitted a film for the first time in the 59-year history of this award category.
Afghanistan's reported submission Parting directed by Navid Mahmoudi was not included on the final list announced by the Academy.
Armenia's reported submission Earthquake from the russian blockbuster director of Armenian origin Sarik Andreasyan largely co-produced by Russia was disqualified because the disaster movie did not comply with the submission requirements.
Cameroon's reported second submission ever Yahan Ameena Bikti Hai by Indian director Kumar Raj mostly produced by India was also not on the final list of qualified contenders.
Tunisia's initially reported submission was the film The Flower of Aleppo about a family destiny in connection with the ISIS terrorist group in Syria directed by Ridha Behi but was surprisingly withdrawn eight days before the deadline and replaced by As I Open My Eyes under the direction of Leyla Bouzid about a rock singer before the start of the Jasmine Revolution. But in the end this film was also not finally listed as eligible contender by the Academy.
Austria's reported film in the Oscar race of the foreign language category is the biographical drama Stefan Zweig: Farewell to Europe about the last years of the popular austrian-jewish novelist in exile during World War 2 directed by female director Maria Schrader. Five days before the official deadline the local press had reported that the submission was rejected by the Academy for being not enough an Austrian film. However in spite of this circumstance the film is definitely on the final list.
Brazil's national selection process of a film for an Oscar submission was a political issue and stood very much in the limelight of the impeachment against president Dilma Rousseff. After the protest against this - in there eyes - questionable process by the crew of the highly acclaimed front runner movie Aquarius from director Kleber Mendonça Filho during the Cannes Film Festival the film wasn't chosen by the national comittee including a supporter of the new president. In protest against this committee member three other Brazilian film teams withdrew their contribution from the race.
After the annually shortlisting of nine finalist films from the list below during December 2016 approximately four weeks thereafter the final five nominees were announced at 24 January 2017. The Oscars Ceremony with the winner announcement was held on Sunday, Februar 26, 2017.
