My Favorite Period Pieces
What constitutes a period piece, anyway? Well, for the purposes of this list, I will only be including films which not only take place before WWII, but also provide a pleasurable immersion into that day and age (sorry, but The Crucible doesn't exactly fill me with joy with its period accuracy). Focusing primarily on films set between the 17th century and WWII, this list also includes at least one depiction of an even earlier time, although it's apparently wildly historically inaccurate (Braveheart is set around the end of the 13th century). This list also excludes films conventionally considered to be examples of other classic genres, such as westerns (Little Big Man, The Sisters Brothers), horror (The VVitch, Sleepy Hollow, The Others, Jane Eyre), war films (All Quiet on the Western Front), plays written before WWII (Shakespeare, Wilde [since the film is essentially a staging of the play, they are practically historical relics in their own right]), and musicals (Cabaret, My Fair Lady). That being said, many of the films listed here are often also described as romance, comedy, or drama, without making them less of a period piece.
The first ten are my 10 Favorites, ranked in order of their sumptuous transportiveness. After that, they are listed chronologically. Then, the very bottom of the list includes some period pieces which I still need to see.
