- DirectorMichael SchwarzStarsRichard GereFor the past 20 years, scientists around the world have been confronting one of the greatest medical challenges in human history: the search for an AIDS vaccine. Like detectives on the trail of a ruthless serial killer, determined researchers relentlessly pursue the elusive HIV virus, trying to unlock its lethal secrets. Along the way, they uncover promising leads, gaining critical insights into how to immunize the public against the deadliest virus known to man. But so far, the defiant microbe evades every attempt to defeat it. With each passing day, as the epidemic spreads to new parts of the world, the search becomes more urgent. In the absence of a vaccine, another 60 million people may become infected with HIV by the year 2010. ENDING AIDS: THE SEARCH FOR A VACCINE, tells the story of this dramatic duel between man and nature, taking viewers from high-tech labs to clinics where dying patients seek treatment, and into the lives of those whose bodies - for reasons still unclear - miraculously are seemingly immune to infection with HIV. And looking beyond the purely medical challenges into the wider cultural issues surrounding HIV, the film addresses the scientific, political, ethical and organizational challenges of stopping the signature pandemic of our time.
- DirectorRyan GobleStarsCassandra HepburnSaneya BairHeather HamiltonCSULB Professor Carlos Silveira, an artist educator and social activist, wants to bring a sense of joy to impoverished children in Cambodia who are affected by HIV/AIDS. He has recruited 27 American university students to join him as part of a pilot program in using drawing and painting to help these children express their wishes and desires for their futures. As Carlos and the students grapple with the realities of a culture much different from their own, a language they don't understand, art projects that don't go as planned and a three-week deadline, they form a bond with the children. Through these young Cambodian mentors-all of them abandoned by society-the Americans empower their own social activism and learn the true meaning of kindness, selflessness, courage and community. Told from Carlos' and six of his students' perspectives through a mix of spoken (voice-over) diary entries, interviews and interaction with the children as they create art projects together, this documentary shows that even the smallest attempt at making a difference can have life-changing consequences for all the people involved. The film also highlights the growing problem of the 77,000 children in Cambodia who have become orphans due to their parents dying from AIDS, a population expected to grow to 108,700 over the next five years. Yet, the audience is left with a sense of hope that adequate funding, proper food and medical care, as exemplified through the featured NGOs Little Sprouts and Little Folks, will allow these children to thrive until hopefully there is a cure for this unforgiving disease.

- DirectorBrent LeungStarsLuc MontagnierFrancois Barre-SinnousiAnthony FauciWhat is HIV? What is AIDS? What is being done to cure it? These questions sent Canadian filmmaker Brent Leung on a worldwide journey, from the highest echelons of the medical research establishment to the slums of South Africa, where death and disease are the order of the day. In this up-to-the-minute documentary, he observes that although AIDS has been front-page news for over 28 years, it is barely understood. Despite the great effort, time, and money spent, no cure is in sight. Born in 1980 (on the cusp of the epidemic), Leung reveals a research establishment in disarray, and health policy gone tragically off course. Gaining access to a remarkable array of the most prominent and influential figures in the field -- among them the co-discoverers of HIV, presidential advisors, Nobel laureates, and the Executive Director of UNAIDS, as well as survivors and activists -- his restrained approach yields surprising revelations and stunning contradictions. The HIV/AIDS story is being rewritten, and this is the first film to present the uncensored POVs of virtually all the major players -- in their own settings, in their own words. It rocks the foundation upon which all conventional wisdom regarding HIV/AIDS is based. If, as South African health advocate Pephsile Maseko remarks, "this is the beginning of a war...a war to reclaim our health," then House of Numbers could well be the opening salvo in the battle to bring sanity and clarity to an epidemic clearly gone awry.
