- DirectorBob FosseStarsLiza MinnelliMichael YorkHelmut GriemA female girlie club entertainer in Weimar Republic era Berlin romances two men while the Nazi Party rises to power around them.Watched in November 2010
Another film I've not seen for years and another film I don't really recall. It is of course one of those critically acclaimed films, that got Liza Minnelli an Oscar among many others. As a musical film it also stands up there with the greatest.
Watching this recently I was blown away by the whole film. It is a remarkable piece of work with it's black and white opening painting that transform into colour and life to the wonderful performances by both Minnelli and Michael York not too mention some fantastic Bob Fosse dancing. 30 years on the film still looks great and contains some stunning cinematography which are highlighted in the brilliant in the musical numbers in the club.
Among the fun of the cabaret there is love or the lack of love and the relationship between Sally and Brian is charming and heartbreaking, her choice over the pregnancy for instance. Minnelli as Sally Bowles is truly brilliant, highlighting her excellence as a singer but also as an actor both dramatically and comically. Of course there is a horror unfolding among the love, relationships and musical entertainment, that being the rise of the Nazi's and the coming of WWII. Bob Fosse doesn't stray too much in exploring this, but when he does it is often startling: often using frozen tableau that our main characters pass through, it's has a startling effect. Even more so when out enjoying a drink, a moment of tranquility is shattered by a sudden rise of Nationalistic fever as a member of Hitler youth sings Tomorrow Belongs To Me only to be joined by the crowd. Of course there are also hints at the anti-Semitic feelings as minor characters feel the strain of being Jewish.
The film is a truly superb experience, many who are fans of the stage version may struggle with this vastly altered film version, but that should be only a minor gripe when a film offers so much. - DirectorEli RothStarsJordan LaddRider StrongJames DeBelloFive college graduates rent a cabin in the woods and begin to fall victim to a horrifying flesh-eating virus, which attracts the unwanted attention of the homicidal locals.Stupid run of the mill horror
- DirectorDrew GoddardStarsKristen ConnollyChris HemsworthAnna HutchisonFive college friends head out to a remote cabin for a getaway, but things don't go as planned when they start getting killed. - DirectorRuba NaddaStarsPatricia ClarksonAlexander SiddigElena AnayaA romantic drama about a brief, unexpected love affair that catches two people completely off-guard.Watched in June 2010 SFF
This story of an American woman left to her own devices in Cairo whilst her she waits for her husbands return from Gaza is beautifully told. Juliette is in an alien world, a western woman who attracts the advances of Cairo's men, even the young ones which both delights and scares her. She bonds with her husbands ex collegue, who acts as a guide and protector. There are some wonderful aspects to the film, its full of beauty. Cairo presents itself as a place of both chaos and beauty. There are also nice moments of humour as Juliette adjusts to and discovers her new surroundings. Her bonding with Tareeq is wonderfully subtle and gentle: the bond and attraction gradually revealing itselfs to both us and them and the first kiss is both cute and funny. The relationship never becomes to involved, the return of the husband stops that and this works in the films favour.
Juliette is played by Patrica Clarkson, who is absolutely exquisite throughout. She is strong, yet demure and this performance is central to the films quality and making the film so beguiling. Through Juliette, we visit Cairo aswell and it makes for a truly wonderful journey. - DirectorCristian NemescuStarsArmand AssanteJamie ElmanRazvan VasilescuA railway chief delays a NATO train transporting military equipment during the war in Kosovo in 1999.Heard good things, but it fails to impress enough.

- DirectorWalter LangStarsFrank SinatraShirley MacLaineMaurice ChevalierIn 1896 Paris, a female nightclub proprietor fights against the forces of public morality for the right to feature her performers doing the risqué dance, the Can-Can.Watched in March 2011
In 1890's France, club owner Simone has her girls perform the leg kicking, skirt lifting dance the Can-Can every night, despite it being banned for being to risque. Simone and her girls use their charms to stop the police and judges from shutting her club down or throwing her in the slammer, all of which her boyfriend Francois, a lawyer watches helplessly. When a new judge arrives on the scene though, Simone has her work cut out as he takes a moral stand against the dance, but begins to fall in love with Simone, causing a dilemma for him, Simone and Francois.
This 1960's adaptation of Cole Porter's musical is a good reminder of the musicals of yesteryear, yet despite some memorable tunes and great set direction and costumes, it feels a little flat. Having said that, there is somethings to enjoy along the way too long running time and most of that is thanks to a wonderful performance from Shirley MacLaine who shines throughout. She steals the limelight from her co-stars and that's a tough gig when you play against Frank Sinatra and a handsome Louis Jordan, but she manages it well.
Dance and choreography is the other fine aspect to this film and it's brimming with it; from a sequence near the start where Simone battles her the advances of men to the lengthy ballet near the end, a 'Adam and Eve' story filled with fantastic dancing and costumes. Of course you'll also find the Can-Can itself in here, although the music is different to what most would know as the Can-Can, but you still have the energy, high kicks and dress shuffling that makes it what it is.
Yet these aspects don't have enough to hold up the film, the plot feels dragged out and therefore so does the film - the DVD even has the original 'intermission' in the middle- whilst these older musicals have a certain something, style, look etc, many just don't have quite enough to make them as memorable as others and Can-Can dances into the area. - DirectorNancy WalkerStarsRay SimpsonDavid HodoFelipe RoseA pseudo autobiography of disco's The Village People.Ridiculously bad, and not really in a good way. But, despite some good performances, Geoffrey Rush and Heath Ledger, the film was pretty depressing and I couldn't care less about these addicts.

- StarsEdgar RamírezAlexander ScheerFadi Abi SamraThe story of Venezuelan revolutionary Ilich Ramírez Sánchez, who founded a worldwide terrorist organization and raided the 1975 OPEC meeting.Watched in May 2011
Born in Venezuela, Ilich Ramírez Sánchez becomes involved in the Palestinian cause, training at camps in the Middle East and after a few not very successful terrorist attacks, becomes involved as the lead of a group attack on a OPEC meeting in Vienna. The attack doesn’t go all to plan but eventually the group has their demands met and Ilich, now know as Carlos leads his group on a plane towards Algiers with some 40 hostages. But not everyone is playing the game correctly and the plot begins to unravel leading to Carlos to give in and stay in Algiers.
The event though is enough to make him a hero and a wanted man and he is forced to flit between nations in the Middle East, before he settles in Sudan, where not only is his health catching up with him but so too are the international authorities who are determined to catch the man nicknamed Carlos The Jackal.
Originally a 5 hours TV mini series, this is a reduced theatrical version cut down to a still mammoth 2hr 40mins. With a film that long, you enter with some trepidation; but Carlos has garnered some very positive reviews. After a slowish start as Carlos goes through the motions of making himself known the film feels a little stagnate, but gradually the story becomes more fascinating as Carlos leads the attack on the OPEC. The attack, as is much of Carlos’ actions are violent, but as it becomes clear the terrorists won’t get all they want, it almost becomes farcical.
Carlos’s rise to fame is quick and so is his demise and it’s difficult not to see why; he is utterly charming and smooth, yet focused and intelligent but also very volatile. Despite the films length, the story is utterly absorbing for the most part, with the bulk of the story focusing around the OPEC siege and it works so well thanks to the outstanding performance of Edgar Ramirez as Carlos. Ramirez puts in a tour de force and is captivating and handsome showing a huge talent (both in acting and in the genital areas) and brings the smooth, cool and calculating traits of Carlos to life. Not only does he captivate, he impress’s beyond the acting flitting effortlessly between speaking Spanish, French, Arabic and English and his performance alone is worth the admission alone.
Whether Carlos’ actions are something to be praised for the cause or condemned this is ultimately a very well made document of one of histories intriguing characters. - DirectorOtto PremingerStarsHarry BelafonteDorothy DandridgePearl BaileyContemporary version of the Bizet opera, with new lyrics and an African-American cast.Lovely retelling of the Carmen story. - DirectorKôji WakamatsuStarsShinobu TerajimaShima ÔnishiKen YoshizawaThe story of a village woman given the grueling task of looking after (and fulfilling the sexual needs of) her quadruple amputee husband, a Japanese soldier in the Second Sino-Japanese War who has been decreed a "War God" by the Emperor.Watched in August 2010 MIFF
Bookend by newsreel footage and statistics this film holds nothing back in making a statement about war and the horrors attached to it. The return of a Japanese soldier to his small rural village and his wife during WWII is seen by the nation as something to be grateful for. Decorated by The Emperor and lauded as a hero, a 'War God', the locals and everyone alike treat him with the utmost respect and dignity. But this soldier fought for his country at a price, he was injured and lost all his limbs and the ability to speak.
For his family, but more so for his wife, this is a devastating event. He has been returned, yet an invalid. His wife has little choice but to stay by his side, to appear as the supportive and caring wife of this hero, yet she is repulsed and mystified by the husband that has come back to her. He desire only to eat sleep and have sex. It is a pitiful life, one that gradually is disturbed by flashbacks of crimes he committed before he was wounded and by a wife who begins to take out on him her frustration of his past treatment of her. The wife is very well played and the effects of creating a limbless body are excellent adding fully to the disturbing nature which ultimately has a tragic, but perhaps understandable ending.
The reminders of the death count from the war, the dropping of the atomic bombs, the devastation they caused are mentioned loud and clear at the end and completes a intense experience. It's interesting to see this having also seen City Of Life And Death, another WWII film, this one set in China and focusing on the atrocities committed by the Japanese. That film, was a startling vivid large scale film, full of horror and had a profound effect on me. This film worked less so although by the end you cannot help me moved and disturbed, it never grabs on in a way that a film telling this story should. - DirectorHenry JoostAriel SchulmanStarsNev SchulmanAriel SchulmanHenry JoostYoung filmmakers document their colleague's budding online friendship with a young woman and her family which leads to an unexpected series of discoveries.Watched in January 2011
When photographer Yaniv Schulman has one of his photos published in a New York paper is sets of a sequence of events that his brother Ariel and friend Henry feel would make for a great film and start documenting everything. Yaniv receives a painting of the photo that was published that appears to be the hand of a 8 yr old in Michigan. More paintings arrive and via Facebook communication is made with young Abby, followed by her Mother and then her older sister Megan. Yaniv and Megan began a relationship of sorts, talking via phone and online chats with her recording songs for him and her family becoming a fixture in his life. But then events begin to happen that make him question what he's got involved with.
This is one of those films that is difficult to review without giving too much away and it's also a film that works even better when you go into it not knowing exactly what might be the outcome. Infact whilst the trailer alludes to certain things it really does a good job of being very ambiguous. The film itself is utterly fascinating from the outset with it's story of online romance, intrigue and mystery. Yaniv is a charming subject, handsome and charismatic and the flow of the film works well, starting with what seems some sort of whimsy before turning into a edge of the seat mystery.
Once on the road the film becomes quite thrilling with it's handheld video camera work and constant air of unknown. And so when the outcome does come, it is as dramatic as it's lead up. But more than that it's ultimately quite tragic and very moving. The closeness of the camera gives the whole film a realness and intensity to it that some documentaries fail to supply.
The film has become a talking point over it's authenticity and whether any of it's real at all; fabrication within fabrication. With the story presented so well, it's hard not to become involved fully in the story and therefore it's difficult not to see outside what we are presented. It feels, utterly real and more importantly it's all achievable. Some might say there's too much coincidence but I fail to see that as such, more that it's a situation that got out of control and of course something had to break.
Regardless of the amount of truth involved it's a excellent film that entertains, amuses, shocks and fascinates right up until the credits. - DirectorWerner HerzogStarsWerner HerzogJean ClottesJulien MonneyWerner Herzog gains exclusive access to film inside the Chauvet caves of Southern France and captures the oldest known pictorial creations of humanity.Fantastic film with some great visuals and of course Herzog's wonderful narration.

- DirectorMiguel ArtetaStarsEd HelmsJohn C. ReillyAnne HecheTim Lippe has no idea what he's in for when he's sent to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to represent his company at an annual insurance convention, where he soon finds himself under the "guidance" of three convention veterans.Watched in June 2011
SFF 2011
Tim Lippe is an insurance agent in a small town where he sleeps with old school teacher and lives in a comfort zone he rarely steps out of. When he is sent to insurance convention with the hope of getting his company the 'Two Diamond Award, he is not prepared at the reality of the world as is as fascinated as appalled at what he finds. He is taken under the wing of 3 old timers who begin to break down Tim's barriers and introduce him to a different way of thinking.
Whilst it's starts well with Lippe doing his thing - being in love with his ex school teacher is the most unexpected thing about him - the film's story struggles to be funny for the most part, despite it's premise and great cast including Ed Helms and John C. Reilly. Whilst it does have it's moments it fails to establish if it's trying to be a satire or something more obvious and it's rather obvious plot becomes tired and dull. The real highlight is a series of vignettes that play during the credits inwhich Lippe presents his new insurance company. - DirectorLee Toland KriegerStarsRashida JonesAndy SambergElijah WoodA divorcing couple tries to maintain their friendship while they both pursue other people.really disliked this - hated the characters.
- DirectorStéphane LaporteStarsRené AngélilRené-Charles AngélilCéline DionA documentary on Céline Dion's 2008-2009 Taking Chances world tour.Watched in November 2010
I watched this recently for the fact that it was on and I was bored. I am not a Celine Dion fan in the slightest, but as a fly on the wall documentary that follows Dion on her world tour, I thought it might prove interesting.
This is very much in the same vein as In Bed With Madonna, the behind the scenes doco that followed Madonna around during her Blond Ambition Tour. However, the similarities stop there and you are certainly not going to see Celine Dion give a water bottle a blow job. The takes her from South Africa, Australia, Asia, Europe and the Americas. Along the way we see plenty of concert footage and there are lots of action behind the scenes: meet and greets with fans, cast & crew dinners, throat problems and sickness, birthdays and much more. If you are a Celine fan, the concert footage will be enjoyable and I admit she certainly does have a voice. The rest is quite interesting, there are moments that show touring builds bonds and relationships, such as where one of her dancers leaves the show: there are also some nice family moments with her husband and child.
However, much of it seemed a little staged for the camera, such as Celine singing to a young black South African girl, who looked very uncomfortable and some of the fan meets which were a little scary often gave the impression that Dion was bored senseless, but perhaps doing that sort of thing time and time again must become a little repetitive. I'm sure that this film would appeal more if you have a liking of Celine Dion without that it's mildly entertaining, but it's difficult to view it without thinking of the hysterical youtube video: Celine Dion is still amazing - DirectorDaniel MonzónStarsLuis TosarAlberto AmmannAntonio ResinesThe story of two men on different sides of a prison riot -- the inmate leading the rebellion and the young guard trapped in the revolt, who poses as a prisoner in a desperate attempt to survive the ordeal.Effective prison drama. Though it goes through the usual motions, it does so well with some nice performances.
- DirectorAbbas KiarostamiStarsJuliette BinocheWilliam ShimellJean-Claude CarrièreIn Tuscany to promote his latest book, a middle-aged British writer meets a French woman who leads him to the village of Lucignano. While there, a chance question reveals something deeper.Watched in August 2010 MIFF
About 10 minutes into this film I began to feel very unwell and then I felt better within a few minutes, so decided to stay, but spent the rest of the film feeling quite out of sorts to the point where I spent most of the time wondering whether I should gather my things and shuffle out past everyone. Due to this I wasn't paying full attention to the film, so my review is a little subdued.
Firstly though, Juliette Binoche seems to become not only more beautiful as she gets older, but she becomes as an actor more and more sublime and in this she is exquisite. She is one of several women I have seen recently of a certain age that are radiant on screen, Tilda Swinton in I Am Love and Patricia Clarkson in Cairo Time are both perfect examples. Binoche's performance show a remarkable range of skill, she is both dramatic yet gentle and even funny, she is utterly natural throughout and captivates in every scene.
The film itself also looks splendid, wonderful camera work captures the beauty of Italy, it landscape, it's culture and it's buildings, it makes you want to be there in an instant. At first the film begins with nothing more than a connection, a meeting between two people. Yet as it progresses, especially onwards from the scene in the coffee shop, it enters a new realm of unknown, that leaves the audience to decipher the actions of those we watch. Are they playing out some fantasy, are they actually husband and wife, perhaps estranged, remembering what they once had? That's how I saw it, but there is also the notion that these two people are exploring their own understanding of love and relationships, by using each other as a listening platform.
I admit that due to feeling unwell, I must have missed some of the finer points, but it is an intriguing and captivating enough film to wonder that it is well worth another visit. I give it 3 stars for now, but feel it may deserve more, if not just for Binoche's remarkable performance. - DirectorTheodoros AngelopoulosOlivier AssayasBille AugustStarsIsabelle AdjaniPegah AhangaraniAnouk AiméeA collective film of 33 shorts directed by different directors about their feelings about Cinema.Interesting insight into cinema with some segments working better than others

But when they try to pass off an impostor as her son to quieten public protests, she refuses to accept him or give up hope.Very good film from Eastwood and I was very taken with Angelina Jolie's performance. I was expecting something over the top, but I thought she played the role with great restraint. The recreation of the period is wonderful and the story all the more gripping seeing as its based on real events. Its just a shame the stupid bitch sat next to us who was stuffing crisps into her mouth like they were her last meal.

- DirectorSteven SoderberghStarsJulia OrmondBenicio Del ToroOscar IsaacIn 1956, Ernesto 'Che' Guevara and a band of Castro-led Cuban exiles mobilize an army to topple the regime of dictator Fulgencio Batista.Watched in August 2009 MIFF
This 1st part of a two parts biopic from Steven Soderbergh, started very slowly and there were a huge amount of people trudging into this sold out session for at least 20 minutes in and due to the lay out of the cinema I found this very distracting. The film dances between colour and black and white and tells of Che's involvement in the Cuban revolution. It is very well made, beautifully shot and the locations are great, though not shot in Cuba. The cast do a fine job and as a history lesson there is much to learn. This is not I suppose the Che, that most will know, the image that adorns many a tshirt etc. Che was many things other than a fighter but the film doesn't concentrate on his life more the time frame leading up to the revolution. I wasn't enthralled by it but I did enjoy it, more so the scenes of Che speaking at the United Nations. - DirectorSteven SoderberghStarsDemián BichirRodrigo SantoroBenicio Del ToroIn 1967, Ernesto 'Che' Guevara leads a small partisan army to fight an ill-fated revolutionary guerrilla war in Bolivia, South America.Watched in August 2009 MIFF
This was alot more enjoyable than Part 1, perhaps because the narrative was better flowing. The second part follows Che's attempts to do in Bolivia what he had done in Cuba. Of course it failed miserably and he was executed by the Bolivian military. The film again starts slowly, but it sets the scene and like the 1st part it leads up to an ending full of tension. The final scenes of Che and his rebels surrounded by Bolivian troops are outstanding, highlighting exactly what they were up against, it was a lost cause. Che had an incredible life and perhaps there is too much to cover in a film or two, but my interest may have been greater had they touched on more elements of his life instead of concentrating on just two. I find it difficult to feel anything for this man, was he great or was he a murderer? I don't follow his way of thinking and come from a vastly different social background. It is perhaps interesting to me that it was said by the Bolivian president (in the film) that Batista should have gotten rid of Castro when he had the opportunity. Interesting because who knows where Cuba would be now, though of course we can only speculate. I'm quite sure it wouldn't have led to a two part biopic about Che. - DirectorStephen FrearsStarsMichelle PfeifferRupert FriendKathy BatesThe son of a courtesan retreats into a fantasy world after being forced to end his relationship with the older woman who educated him in the ways of love.Light easy going. I went into this mostly because Julianne Moore is in it and so knew little about the plot. Surprise! Moore's character hires a high end prostitute to seduce her husband who she suspects of having an affair. This leads to a case of intrigue for the wife, that leads to a array of twists and turns.
It is a clever film, it looks stylish and one of the main twists really had me amazed I didn't see it coming. The script at times is a little painful and the audience responded to this with some chuckles throughout, which is a shame as it's not a bad film. The film highlights sexual desire, coupled with dishonesty and a lack of trust and has some good moments in it. As I said it is a clever film. It reminds me of some of those 90's films like Single White Female or Fatal Attraction, although it never becomes too cliched. But so much is added and never explained, the son for instance and his relationship with his mother is never explored or explained.
There are some fine performances from the two female leads. I think Julianne Moore is one of the finer actors out there and Amanda Seyfried had come along long way from 'Mamma Mia' and looks stunning throughout. The film has some really great points and works well on some levels such as acting and style, but fails in others as it never really manages to pull the story together successfully. - DirectorGeoffrey SaxStarsMatt SmithImogen PootsLindsay DuncanHow real-life British-American author Christopher Isherwood and his German boyfriend Heinz met and fell in love during the 1930s and the rise of Nazism.Interesting look back at a different era.

This film is about secrets, lots and lot of secrets. The family of four all have them, some larger than others. Some huge. Potentially this could be really heavy handed stuff, but this film plays it with a touch of humour and never gets too bogged down in anything too full on. The cast are all great, Andy Garcia is wonderful as the husband holding himself together among his array of secrets and Steven Strait is wonderfully easy on the eye. There is an element of soap opera and farce to the film, though it never gets too carried away. I did struggle with the son's interest in obese women, or maybe just the obesity. Despite the family's dysfunctional behavior they are all quite normal and likable characters which is why the film works so well. There are some great scenes in it and at times it's quite funny, although there are some touching moments aswell: infact Emily Mortimer's characters story is tragic.
My qualm with the film was the ending, with the mass revelations of the family's secrets out on the street. It seemed a little overboard and reactions muted, for so much to come out in the open it seemed ever so relaxed and subdued, surely there would be much more screaming shouting and emotions flying around. Still maybe that would be in a different version of the film and perhaps it wouldn't be as enjoyable - DirectorChuan LuStarsYe LiuWei FanHideo NakaizumiIn 1937, Japan occupied Nanjing, the Chinese capital. There was a battle and subsequent atrocities against the inhabitants, especially those who took refuge in the International Security Zone.Watched in July 2010
City Of Life And Death is the story of the Japanese ransacking of the Chinese city of Nanjing during WWII. Known as The Rape of Nanjing, the Japanese were responsible for the rape and torture of thousands of woman and children aswell as the murder of an hundreds of thousands of Chinese.
With a storyline such as this, a film will be a hard journey to go on. The film holds nothing back, it reveals the horror, brutality, panic and desperation that is war. Filmed in glorious black and white, the film looks incredible, this along with the recreation of a destroyed Nanjing, it is both meticulously made and brilliantly played out. There are a hand full of main characters and much of the film is seen from the point of view of the Japanese. Yet we also see what life was like for those inside the 'Safe Zone', a mix of Chinese and foreigners. The film is relentless with it's presentation of the horrors: Images of dead bodies scattered in the streets, innocent people shot at point blank range, woman and children rape and assaulted, bodiless heads hanging swaying in the wind. The images and confronting and upsetting. Then there are the scenes of the hundreds of men rounded up and murdered. Some were locked into a large shed and burnt alive, whilst others were simply shot. The image of hundreds of men standing at the shore of a lake, before the inevitable takes place is an image that greatly affected me. As did much of the film. I found it intensely and deeply moving, the idea that humanity can treat each other so very badly is brought home with a punch in this film. The fact that woman would 'volunteer' to be sex slaves to save others is remarkable and dreadful.
Yet through all this horror, there are tiny hints that people tried to retain normality, children played, women sung, even the Japanese are shown as humans, practicing the dance they latter perform with roaring drums and perfect choreography. The film ends with a note of hope, that some were able to escape the atrocities and perhaps go onto to lead something of a normal life. The film is an history lesson, telling a story that I knew nothing about. It's a hard story to take in, but an important one. - DirectorMarc CaroJean-Pierre JeunetStarsRon PerlmanDaniel EmilforkJudith VittetA scientist in a surrealist society kidnaps children to steal their dreams, hoping that they slow his aging process. An early gem from Jeunet. Hot on the heels of the success of Jaws, Steven Spielberg brought us the first of his many sci-fi films with Close Encounters.
Amid strange findings, such as a ship in the Gobi desert and missing 1945 airforce jets in South America, a small town in Indiana has a black out and a few experience an encounter with something unexplained. One resident, Roy starts to feel something that leads him to the verge of insanity; a sense of a place that is at first unknown. He is joined by a woman who's son went missing and together they try to work out what it means. Roy's antics tear at the heart of his family as they look on helplessly. Eventually he works out what or where he has been sensing and with the woman, Jillian, they travel to Devil's Tower to experience an extraordinary encounter.
Spielberg showed with Jaws what a superb film maker he is, but he is also a superb story teller. Opening with seemingly unconnected events the film aims at alluding to something happening without giving too much away early on. The film gathers pace once Roy has his encounter in his truck, which highlights Spielberg's excellence as a film maker, the scene is full of fear, excitement, intrigue and a little humour. The film never plays too seriously, but never becomes too like later film E.T. and as Roy's obsession becomes stronger, so the film's tone becomes more serious with the desperation, confusion and fear his family feel.
By the time we reach Devil's Tower, the films epic nature comes to the fore, with the arrival of the spacecraft and the playing of the musical notes between them and us; the film ends with both an unknown and uplifting style.
Brilliant for the most part, it is a sci-fi film that isn't scary or full of horror or terror, simply it is more to do with the intrigue of humanity and it's fascination with space and what might be out there. Set pieces are excellent: the road chase of the aliens through the hills; the arrival of the crafts at Jillian's house and of course the ending with the first arrival of multitude types of craft before the huge mothership slides into view. Richard Dreyfuss is excellent as Roy and there are fine performances from Terri Garr as his embattled wife and Melinda Dillion as Jillian. That the aliens are for the most part presented only through their craft adds to the intrigue and that there are no battles or fighting between them and us makes this perhaps more real.
I did find fault in the film; the aliens when finally seen are poorly executed, children walking around in costumes with very visible gloves with pointy fingers that no amount of clever lighting or smoke can conceal is a disappointment and I also struggled with the notion that the mothership arrived then 180° which means the humans inside must have been upside down when the ship first arrives! My main issue though was the obsession of Roy in the middle of the film, whilst it's not perhaps that he his obsessed it's more the length of time we spend seeing him in this state, I find it detracts from the flow of the film and slows it down. But these are really minors complaints against an otherwise brilliant film.
It is also interesting to note that the film's ending with Roy being chosen to board the mothership and therefore leaving his family behind leaves a wonderful opening for a sequel - his return, something that would work well if done now. Spielberg has stated that had he had a family at the time he wouldn't have let Roy enter the ship, which also adds interest to the possibility of how the film could have gone. Spielberg of course has continued his fascination with sci-fi, many with alien elements, with a host of films including E.T., Jurassic Park and Minority Report and no doubt more to come. - DirectorJafar PanahiKambuzia PartoviStarsKambuzia PartoviMaryam MoghadamJafar PanahiIn a secluded house by the sea with the curtains shut, a screenwriter hides from the world with only his dog as company.
