- DirectorRoman PolanskiStarsEwan McGregorPierce BrosnanOlivia WilliamsA ghost writer, hired to complete the memoirs of a former British Prime Minister, uncovers secrets that put his own life in jeopardy.Nice suspense and characterization.
- DirectorAndrew WagnerStarsFrank LangellaLauren AmbrosePatti PerkinsAn ambitious graduate student convinces a writer that her thesis can resurrect his career.I believe the mantra of this movie is "A writer writes. Always." Regardless of the situation, whether the writer is often published or not, the writer WRITES. Always.
- DirectorWoody AllenStarsOwen WilsonRachel McAdamsKathy BatesWhile on a trip to Paris with his fiancée's family, a nostalgic screenwriter finds himself mysteriously going back to the 1920s every day at midnight.I loved the arguments of this movie; that no matter what time we live in, that time is better than the nostalgia of before because we are in the now and now is better than then.
- DirectorRichard QuineStarsWilliam HoldenAudrey HepburnGrégoire AslanThe sprightly young assistant of a Hollywood screenwriter helps him over his writer's block by acting out his fantasies of possible plots. The William Holden character was such an egomaniac but yet likable and I cheered for him and Audrey Hepburn. She was the ying to his yang who got him to focus on his writing.
- DirectorNancy MeyersStarsJack NicholsonDiane KeatonKeanu ReevesA swinger on the cusp of being a senior citizen with a taste for young women falls in love with an accomplished woman closer to his age.I liked Dianne Keaton as a playwright in this one, because she was very believable. I felt her pain as she wrote her play about love and losing love.
- DirectorPaul HaggisStarsLiam NeesonMila KunisAdrien BrodyThree interlocking love stories involving three couples in three cities: Rome, Paris, and New York. This movie was so riveting and moody. I loved the feel and the pacing of it.
- DirectorBrian KlugmanLee SternthalStarsBradley CooperDennis QuaidOlivia WildeA writer at the peak of his literary success discovers the steep price he must pay for stealing another man's work.I loved this movie, from the struggling writer who was so desperate to be published that he stole someone else's work to the Earnest Hemingwayesque loss of a writer's work at a train station. The Words is not a pretentious movie, rather, it is a movie about loss, findings and discoveries.
- DirectorHenry BromellStarsJeremy IronsNeve CampbellSissy SpacekRenowned writer F. Scott Fitzgerald is living the last months of his life with his youthful secretary, confidant and protege who later wrote a memoir of their time together.Anything about one of the greatest writers in literature is worth the watch. Neve Campbell as Francis Kroll was fantastic in her portrayal of the ambitious and dedicated assistant. Jeremy Irons as F. Scott Fitzgerald was dead on perfect in his depiction of a time in a great writer's life.
- DirectorCurtis HansonStarsMichael DouglasTobey MaguireFrances McDormandAn English Professor tries to deal with his wife leaving him, the arrival of his editor who has been waiting for his book for seven years, and the various problems that his friends and associates involve him in.This movie takes my breath away! I love the line regarding the house as "It's the kind of house you'd like to wake up in on Christmas morning". That line made me feel warm and nostalgic for my youth when Christmas held a different meaning for me.
- DirectorClaude LelouchStarsFanny ArdantDominique PinonAudrey DanaA popular novelist researches unlikely sources to find characters for her next bestseller.Captivating movie with a twist I never saw coming.
- DirectorSidney LumetStarsMichael CaineChristopher ReeveDyan CannonA Broadway playwright puts murder in his plan to take credit for a student's play.I enjoyed this gem. The acting and the writing was believable and compelling. I love stage plays but they don't do mysteries anymore, all musicals. Too bad.
- DirectorJulian JarroldStarsAnne HathawayJames McAvoyJulie WaltersA biographical portrait of a pre-fame Jane Austen and her romance with a young Irishman. What I said about Fitzgerald holds true for Jane Austen. What an intriguing woman. Anne Hathaway's portrayal was dead solid perfect and the story grips you until the end.
- DirectorTamara JenkinsStarsLaura LinneyPhilip Seymour HoffmanPhilip BoscoA sister and brother face the realities of familial responsibility as they begin to care for their ailing father.Laura Linney. Philip Seymour Hoffman. You can't go wrong with that cast. They delivered two stellar performances in a very moving film about familial relationships.
- DirectorNoah BaumbachStarsOwen KlineJeff DanielsLaura LinneyFollows two young boys dealing with their parents' divorce in Brooklyn in the 1980s.Does it count? Hmmm...
- DirectorRob MarshallStarsDaniel Day-LewisMarion CotillardPenélope CruzFamous film director Guido Contini struggles to find harmony in his professional and personal lives, as he engages in dramatic relationships with his wife, his mistress, his muse, his agent, and his mother.Another one that may not count as being about a writer but the story of a director's creative process being so emotional and thought provoking reminded me of the writing process in that they were so similar. It is a good movie that I think is enjoyable.
