- DirectorPaul KingStarsHugh BonnevilleSally HawkinsJulie WaltersA young Peruvian bear travels to London in search of a home. Finding himself lost and alone at Paddington Station, he meets the kindly Brown family, who offer him a temporary haven.***1/2: A charming, funny and faithful adaption that proves Hollywood doesn't always make crappy adaptations of kid shows or books.
- DirectorOlivier MegatonStarsLiam NeesonForest WhitakerMaggie GraceAccused of a ruthless murder he never committed or witnessed, Bryan Mills goes on the run and brings out his particular set of skills to find the true killer and clear his name.**1/2: Taken 3 is full of cliches and is predictable for one thing but Liam Neeson kicking ass in a Fugitive like plot kept my interest nevertheless. Since it is Neeson and he's never bad; even in movies not so great.
But Forrest Whitaker still chasing Neeson when it's clear something else is going on annoyed me through-out. - DirectorDavid KoeppStarsJohnny DeppGwyneth PaltrowEwan McGregorJuggling angry Russians, the British Mi5, and an international terrorist, debonair art dealer and part-time rogue Charlie Mortdecai races to recover a stolen painting rumored to contain a code that leads to lost gold.
- DirectorMike BinderStarsKevin CostnerOctavia SpencerGillian JacobsA grieving widower is drawn into a custody battle over his granddaughter, whom he helped raise her entire life.
- DirectorJeremy GarelickStarsKevin HartJosh GadKaley CuocoTwo weeks shy of his wedding, a socially awkward guy enters into a charade by hiring the owner of a company that provides best men for grooms in need.
- DirectorMichael MannStarsChris HemsworthViola DavisTang WeiA furloughed convict and his American and Chinese partners hunt a high-level cybercrime network from Chicago to Los Angeles to Hong Kong to Jakarta.**: I expected to be into this movie more than I was. I love the movie Heat. Blackhat though is only alive during Michael Mann style shoot outs. Other than that I found it blah.
- DirectorSimon WestStarsJason StathamMichael AngaranoDominik GarciaWhen a Las Vegas bodyguard with lethal skills and a gambling problem gets in trouble with the mob, he has one last play...and it's all or nothing.
- DirectorPaul TibbittMike MitchellStarsTom KennyAntonio BanderasBill FagerbakkeWhen a diabolical pirate above the sea steals the secret Krabby Patty formula, SpongeBob and his friends team up in order to get it back.***1/2: Spongebob is barely out of water long enough for the film to be called Sponge Out of Water. Still the movie is a trippy and cute good time for the whole family.
- DirectorRob CohenStarsJennifer LopezRyan GuzmanKristin ChenowethA woman, separated from her unfaithful husband, falls for a younger man who has moved in next door, but their torrid affair soon takes a dangerous turn.
- DirectorDean IsraeliteStarsAmy LandeckerSofia Black-D'EliaVirginia GardnerA group of teens discovers secret plans for a time machine, and construct one. However, things start to get out of control.***: A found footage movie about time traveling teens that would work better....if it wasn't a found footage film. The actors are fine as is the story but all the camera shaking makes the film hard to follow at times.
- DirectorLana WachowskiLilly WachowskiStarsChanning TatumMila KunisEddie RedmayneA young woman discovers her destiny as an heiress of intergalactic nobility and must fight to protect the inhabitants of Earth from an ancient and destructive industry.**: There's tons of loud action and some good visuals. It's one of those movies that's all action and no brains though. While the villain is pretty awful and talks like Marlon Brandon in the Godfather.
You're better off watching Guardians of the Galaxy again or even John Carter over this. - DirectorSergei BodrovStarsBen BarnesJulianne MooreJeff BridgesWhen Mother Malkin, the queen of evil witches, escapes the pit she was imprisoned in by professional monster hunter Spook decades ago and kills his apprentice, he recruits young Tom, the seventh son of the seventh son, to help him.
- DirectorMatthew VaughnStarsColin FirthTaron EgertonSamuel L. JacksonA spy organisation recruits a promising street kid into the agency's training program, while a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius.***1/2: Matthew Vaughn has made yet another very violent but often funny film based on a comic ; like Kick-Ass. By the end though Kingsman isn't as fun as it is in the first half.
While young people training through most the film has been in too many movies these days like Enders Game and Divergent. So I wish half the film wasn't about the young lead trying to impress the older spies to become a Kingsman. - DirectorSam Taylor-JohnsonStarsDakota JohnsonJamie DornanJennifer EhleLiterature student Anastasia Steele's life changes forever when she meets handsome, yet tormented, billionaire Christian Grey.**
- DirectorSteve PinkStarsRob CorddryCraig RobinsonClark DukeWhen Lou's shot in the groin, Nick and Jacob drag him in the Hot Tub Time Machine to go back in time and save Lou. The three end up 10 years in the future, where they need to go to find the shooter.**: Hot Tub Time Machine 2 is yet another uninspired comedy sequel that only happened because the first made money. You'll spend most of the time thinking "why am I watching this ?."
And that's coming from someone who likes time travel movies. There's also very little laughs and too many juvenile moments. While you know they ran out of ideas when Lou (Rob Corddry) and Nick (Craig Robinson) are pressured to have sex just like in the first film. This time though it's on a futuristic tv show. - DirectorSpike BrandtTony CervoneStarsJeff BergmanKevin Michael RichardsonTress MacNeilleFred Flintstone and friends meet John Cenastone and other famous wrestlers.**: It's nice to see the Flintstones again but not with the WWE. Fred's voice is about the only one they got right. While the scenes showing off how strong Cena is to brainwash kids how great he is; made me roll my eyes.
The Scooby Doo WWE film had Cena throwing around boulders like nothing; here of course he's throwing around dinosaurs. WWE should quit messing with Hannah Barbara cartoons. We don't need a WWE Jetsons movie next. The WWE manages to make famous beloved cartoons lame. - DirectorGlenn FicarraJohn RequaStarsWill SmithMargot RobbieRodrigo SantoroIn the midst of veteran con man Nicky's latest scheme, a woman from his past - now an accomplished femme fatale - shows up and throws his plans for a loop.
- DirectorNeill BlomkampStarsSharlto CopleyDev PatelHugh JackmanIn the near future, crime is patrolled by a mechanized police force. When one police droid, Chappie, is stolen and given new programming, he becomes the first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself.** 1/2: Chappie is Short Circuit 2 meets the Robocop remake which isn't that great of a combination. Sure the movie has heart but it's so unintentionally laughable and goofy.
I wish I could say the Alien franchise is in good hands with Neill Blomkamp. Now I am not sure. - DirectorTom McCarthyStarsAdam SandlerMelonie DiazSteve BuscemiA cobbler, bored of his everyday life, stumbles upon a magical heirloom that allows him to become other people and see the world in a different way.** 1/2: Adam Sandler stars as a shoe repairer who hates his job until he starts to use an old stitch machine passed down to him. Which has magical powers to make him look like the person who's shoes he stitched while wearing those shoes. And he starts to enjoy living the lives of other people.
The Cobbler has pretty bad reviews but I guess since critics are used to hating everything Adam Sandler does. Because the movie isn't that bad. It has some charm with a pretty good cast and Sandler isn't that bad at all.
I was into the movie even when it turned into a mob comedy. But the film is still pretty silly. - DirectorJaume Collet-SerraStarsLiam NeesonEd HarrisJoel KinnamanMobster and hit man Jimmy Conlon has one night to figure out where his loyalties lie: with his estranged son, Mike, whose life is in danger, or his longtime best friend, mob boss Shawn Maguire, who wants Mike to pay for the death of his own son.
- DirectorPierre MorelStarsSean PennIdris ElbaJasmine TrincaA sniper on a mercenary assassination team kills the minister of mines of the Congo. Terrier's successful kill shot forces him into hiding. Returning to the Congo years later, he becomes the target of a hit squad himself.
- DirectorKenneth BranaghStarsLily JamesCate BlanchettRichard MaddenWhen her father unexpectedly dies, young Ella finds herself at the mercy of her cruel stepmother and her scheming stepsisters. Never one to give up hope, Ella's fortunes begin to change after meeting a dashing stranger.***1/2: Another live action version of Cinderella is unnecessary since we already had Everafter, A Cinderella Story "and like 3 sequels." But this version is great looking, well made and well acted enough that we don't mind.
- DirectorDavid Robert MitchellStarsMaika MonroeKeir GilchristOlivia LuccardiA young woman is followed by an unknown supernatural force after a sexual encounter.***1/2: Creepy, original and well acted.
- DirectorEtan CohenStarsWill FerrellKevin HartAlison BrieWhen millionaire James King is jailed for fraud and bound for San Quentin, he turns to Darnell Lewis to prep him to go behind bars.
- DirectorTim JohnsonStarsJim ParsonsRihannaSteve MartinAn alien on the run from his own people makes friends with a girl. He tries to help her on her quest, but can be an interference.***: Home is great to look at, touching and often funny. But with that said it's one of DreamWorks weaker animated films. Due to the story being nothing too original or spectacular.
- DirectorRobert SchwentkeStarsShailene WoodleyAnsel ElgortTheo JamesBeatrice Prior must confront her inner demons and continue her fight against a powerful alliance which threatens to tear her society apart with the help from others on her side.***: Insurgent is about decent as the first film. Once again the villains are much more interesting than the heroes. Tris (Shailene Woodley) feels like a Katniss clone more than ever; especially since she even has nightmares.
The Divergent series still makes for an okay series of movies to pass the time with though. But whether or not Insurgent made enough money for a third film; I can't say I'd be bothered too much if another never happened. - DirectorJames WanStarsVin DieselPaul WalkerDwayne JohnsonDeckard Shaw seeks revenge against Dominic Toretto and his family for his comatose brother.***1/2: When Deckhard Shaw (Jason Statham) targets Dominic Torretto; as well as his friends and family. Dominic, Brian O'Connor (Paul Walker) and friends seek vengeance. However they find themselves working for a government agent played by Kurt Russell. If they want Shaw; they have to bring down some dangerous terrorists first; led by Jakande (Djimon Hounsou).
Director Justin Lin who gave us the first Saw, Insidious and the Conjuring proves he can handle action films as well. Since we get some the most intense action than any of the films delivered. Whether it's fight scenes or car chases the action in this one is the best. - DirectorAndy FickmanStarsKevin JamesRaini RodriguezEduardo VerásteguiAfter six years of keeping our malls safe, Paul Blart has earned a well-deserved vacation. He heads to Las Vegas with his teenage daughter before she heads off to college. But safety never takes a holiday and when duty calls, Blart answers.
- DirectorJoss WhedonStarsRobert Downey Jr.Chris EvansMark RuffaloWhen Tony Stark and Bruce Banner try to jump-start a dormant peacekeeping program called Ultron, things go horribly wrong and it's up to Earth's mightiest heroes to stop the villainous Ultron from enacting his terrible plan.***1/2: When Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) tries to build an artificial intelligence named Ultron that would protect Earth from more alien attacks for instance. Ultron (voiced by James Spader) gets a mind of his own and Earth's protector becomes their greatest enemy.
I was disappointed by the story kind of being too fast paced and all over the place in the beginning. And everyone kind of just feels undeveloped and sort of just "there" through most the movie.
I have to say the movie does get more exciting and better by the middle. All you can really expect from this movie is fun; more fun than there is a coherent story though.
Despite the movie being long without a solid story. Age of Ultron is anything but a Michael Bay movie. Because it entertained me rather than just making me deaf while checking my watch like I did with Transformers: Age of Extinction.
Spoiler: However you probably have to be a comic fan to get a kick out of how awesome it is see Vision in the film. And under-rated Paul Bettany is amazing as him. - DirectorElizabeth BanksStarsAnna KendrickRebel WilsonHailee SteinfeldAfter a humiliating command performance at The Kennedy Center, the Barden Bellas enter an international competition that no American group has ever won in order to regain their status and right to perform.
- DirectorGeorge MillerStarsTom HardyCharlize TheronNicholas HoultIn a post-apocalyptic wasteland, a woman rebels against a tyrannical ruler in search for her homeland with the aid of a group of female prisoners, a psychotic worshiper and a drifter named Max.****: Mad Max Fury Road defines the words fast and furious much more so than the Vin Dielsel movies. The movie is bad ass and insane from start to finish. I was just disappointed that it doesn't really take time to reintroduce Max to new audiences. I guess the girl he sees from time to time is supposed to be the child he lost in the first film despite his child being a boy toddler in that.
With that said though the film grips you and never lets go with kick ass action and stunts. The visuals and musical score are also amazing. Mad Max Fury Road hopefully makes enough money for another film. However a 5th film that takes a little bit more time developing Max. And maybe on just a little bit less acid lol. - DirectorBrad BirdStarsGeorge ClooneyBritt RobertsonHugh LaurieBound by a shared destiny, a teen bursting with scientific curiosity and a former boy-genius inventor embark on a mission to unearth the secrets of a place somewhere in time and space that exists in their collective memory.***: It starts out ambitious and fascinating but sadly by the end; a good but not great movie was made.
- DirectorGil KenanStarsSam RockwellRosemarie DeWittKennedi ClementsA family whose suburban home is haunted by evil forces must come together to rescue their youngest daughter after the apparitions take her captive.**1/2: What makes a Poltergeist remake unnecessary is that recently movies like the Conjuring and Insidious gave me some Poltergeist deja vu. In those films a psychic showed up to help a family with supernatural problems and brought a team along to record their findings. Despite both being good films I already felt like I was watching two Poltergeist remakes.
The Poltergeist remake is better than they say due to a good cast and decent enough acting. Besides the Conjuring and Insidious it seems like movies about ghosts targeting a family come out 2-3 times a year these days. So there's just nothing fresh this remake could give us that wasn't done in recent movies or especially the classic original.
The best thing about the movie is that Sam Rockwell (The Green Mile, Iron Man 2) for some reason is in this as the father. He is believable and makes a good replacement for the original father who was played by Craig T. Nelson. What's missing though is the smart humor of the original. The mom putting a football helmet on the daughter and then putting her on a spot of the kitchen floor that magically pushes objects across the room. It was funny in the original and yes bad parenting. This movie tries too hard to be scary and lacks the originals clever sense of humor despite having a sense of humor here and there.
I watched the original last week; the film still works and I can't say updated effects made this remake superior in anyway. Which goes for pretty much every remake these days. While it's hardly Poltergeist without Zelda Rubinstein who was great as the psychic in the original. - DirectorBrad PeytonStarsDwayne JohnsonCarla GuginoAlexandra DaddarioIn the aftermath of a massive earthquake in California, a rescue-chopper pilot makes a dangerous journey with his ex-wife across the state in order to rescue his daughter.***
