- DirectorAri AsterStarsToni ColletteMilly ShapiroGabriel ByrneA grieving family is haunted by tragic and disturbing occurrences. The first film from director Ari Aster, this psychological drama will likely induce nightmares for the more susceptible viewer
- DirectorChristopher McQuarrieStarsTom CruiseHenry CavillVing RhamesEthan Hunt and his IMF team, along with some familiar allies, race against time after a mission gone wrong. The BEST M:I film to date. With intense stunts, stunning locations and a terrific cast including Henry Cavill, this franchise shows no signs of slowing yet with 2 more installments due within the next 2 years
- DirectorJohn Francis DaleyJonathan GoldsteinStarsJason BatemanRachel McAdamsKyle ChandlerA group of friends who meet regularly for game nights find themselves entangled in a real-life mystery when the shady brother of one of them is seemingly kidnapped by dangerous gangsters.Initially I dismissed this as dumb entertainment, but when I actually sat down to watch it I found myself laughing
- DirectorSpike LeeStarsJohn David WashingtonAdam DriverLaura HarrierRon Stallworth, an African American police officer from Colorado Springs, Colorado, successfully infiltrates the local Ku Klux Klan branch aided by a Jewish surrogate who eventually becomes its leader. Based on actual events.Based on actual events, this Spike Lee drama has two terrific lead performances from John David Washington (son of Denzel) and Adam Driver (who scored an Oscar nod) as the two cops who helped to infiltrate the KKK in 1970s Colorado
- DirectorBradley CooperStarsLady GagaBradley CooperSam ElliottA musician helps a young singer find fame as age and alcoholism send his own career into a downward spiral. The 3rd remake of the 1937 film but arguably one of the best. Directed by Bradley Cooper (who also stars), Lady Gaga steals the show as an aspiring musician who gains a quick rise to fame while her muse slowly declines into a wreck of his former self. While the story is practically the same as before, the music here helps tell the story and can bring you to tears particularly at the close of the film
- DirectorBryan SingerStarsRami MalekLucy BoyntonGwilym LeeThe story of the legendary British rock band Queen and lead singer Freddie Mercury, leading up to their famous performance at Live Aid (1985).Without question my top favorite of 2018, this musical drama tells of the prime years of rock band ‘Queen’ and it’s legendary frontman, Freddie Mercury. Rami Malek rightfully took home Best Actor trophies for his dedicated and magnetic portrayal of a music icon who was larger than life, but still a humble man who loved his family, friends and music
- DirectorWes AndersonStarsBryan CranstonKoyu RankinEdward NortonSet in Japan, Isle of Dogs follows a boy's odyssey in search of his lost dog.Wes Anderson’s 2nd stop-motion film that has one of the best musical scores in his filmography; from Japanese taiko drums to a whistling call. The cast is phenomenal and witty when playing off each other
- DirectorJohn KrasinskiStarsEmily BluntJohn KrasinskiMillicent SimmondsA family struggles for survival in a world where most humans have been killed by blind but noise-sensitive creatures. They are forced to communicate in sign language to keep the creatures at bay.Who knew Jim Halpert would direct one of the most intense films of the year? John Krasinski and real-life spouse, Emily Blunt, portray a couple who must survive an alien invasion with their two children. Lead mainly by silent performances and haunting sound design and editing, this movie will creep under your skin
- DirectorDavid Gordon GreenStarsJamie Lee CurtisJudy GreerAndi MatichakLaurie Strode confronts her long-time foe, Michael Myers, the masked figure who has haunted her since she narrowly escaped his killing spree on Halloween night four decades ago.Directly ignoring every film after the 1978 original, director David Gordon Green brought the franchise back to its humble roots. After 40 years in Smith’s Grove following his massacre of Annie Brackett, Lynda Vanderklock and Lynda’s boyfriend Bob, Michael Myers breaks loose one evening and goes back after the woman he failed to murder: Laurie Strode. Jaime Lee Curtis brings all her gumption, grit and tenacity that made us love her in 1978 while also competently portraying a woman suffering PTSD from the traumatic murders of her friends and having been stalked and nearly killed herself. Now we await the final portions to the Laurie-Michael story.
- DirectorJames FrancoStarsJames FrancoDave FrancoAri GraynorWhen aspiring actor Greg Sestero meets the weird and mysterious Tommy Wiseau in an acting class, they form a unique friendship and travel to Hollywood to make their dreams come true.Technically released (limited) in late 2017, this comedy-drama is based on Greg Sestero’s book of the same name and documents the making of the ‘Citizen Kane’ of bad movies: The Room. The Franco brother, Dave as Greg Sestero and James (who also directs) as the bizarre and mythical Tommy Wiseau, lead a stacked cast of comedic actors in a wild ride of how such a bafflingly bad movie has managed to stay relevant nearly 20 years after its first release
