While Mike sinks into a depression, Grace Conley, Mike's sister, and her husband Bill take the infant into their home. Eight years pass, and Nancy, now a young girl, is still living with Grace and Bill, who get an allowance for her upkeep from Mike. Grace and Bill rear Nancy with love, but are concerned about Mike's playboy lifestyle. Ashamed of her father's lack of interest in her, Nancy makes up stories about him to keep her friend, Alan Schroeder, from becoming suspicious. Mike, meanwhile, continues his philandering and goes out with his pal, George Cummings, to a drive-in diner, where Mike tries, unsuccessfully, to pick up a waitress named Barbara Adams. Nancy feels neglected and unloved, but her aunt shields her from the truth by telling her that her father cannot see her because he is overworked. One day, Nancy, hoping to improve her relationship with her father, goes to McCarthy, his boss, and demands that he give Mike more free time to spend with her. Later, Mike, trying a different tactic to get Barbara to date him, shows up pretending to be writing a newspaper story about the restaurant. The restaurant owner gladly gives Barbara the day off when Mike asks to interview her, but she goes along unhappily. Barbara changes her mind about Mike after he plants a kiss on her, but the mood is spoiled when McCarthy shows up and threatens to fire Mike if he does not pay more attention to Nancy. Barbara overhears the conversation and decides that Mike is not worth her time. Mike anguishes about his relationship with his daughter and finally decides to make it up to her. After apologizing to her, Mike takes Nancy to the drive-in, where he introduces her to Barbara. Nancy and Barbara become fast friends, and the three go bowling. One day, Barbara tries to tell Mike about Eddy Raymond, a Minnesota bank robber who was convicted through her testimony, but he stops her with a kiss. Eddy, meanwhile, breaks out of prison in Minnesota to exact his revenge on Barbara, and goes to the drive-in looking for her. He gets her address from her boss and goes to her house, where he shoots her and engages Mike in a bruising fistfight. The police arrive in time to kill Eddy and capture his accomplice, but Barbara is sent to the hospital with a gunshot wound. When Mike learns that Barbara is expected to make a complete recovery, he gets to work planning a big wedding and new family life.

Determined to carry out their mother's last wish, Henry and Wayne bully several young men into attending Gerry's birthday party. Irritated with the brothers' heavy-handed attempts to press her own boyfriend on Gerry, Liza Jane Dennis plays Mrs. Cooper's record at the party. Gerry is aghast to hear her mother's exhortations, as is Willy Briggs, a young baker who loves the oblivious Gerry. Humiliated, Gerry runs away from home, and while riding on a train, confides her problems to a sympathetic stranger named Casper Millhouse. Casper advises Gerry to find a husband on her own to show up the Cooperville residents, and introduces her to Amos Hartwell, the founder of the Lonely Hearts club through which Casper met his fiance, Belle Walker. Gerry asks for Amos' help in obtaining a husband but Amos instead hires her as his secretary and promises that she can have the pick of the new prospects. When Gerry learns that the club operates through correspondence, she suggests staging a dance party for the lonely hearts, and the party is such a success that Gerry is soon organizing a series of gatherings. Gerry's head for business also leads to a national hookup for Amos' "Cupid Speaking" radio show. Despite Gerry's distress that she has not found a husband for herself, Amos convinces her that she is so gifted at helping other people that she should go on the radio show as "Madame L'Amour," a mysterious woman of the world who will dispense advice. Gerry's efforts are again successful, although she slips up when answering a letter from Willy, who discerns the "Madame's" true identity from Gerry's reply. Gerry then meets again with Casper, who is searching for Belle, who disappeared following a brief elopement with, and desertion by, a confidence man. Gerry promises to help Casper and also confesses her attraction to J. Edmund Roberts, a supposedly wealthy Hartwell client. Casper encourages Gerry to pursue Roberts, much to the dismay of Willy, who has arrived in the big city to find Gerry. At a club dance, the blindfolded Gerry is thrilled by a kiss from Willy, but when she faints from the excitement, Roberts claims that he was the bestower of the embrace. Gerry agrees to marry Roberts at Cooperville while she is touring as "Madame L'Amour," and once in her home town, she is reunited with her brothers. Henry and Wayne are pleased that Gerry is engaged, but Belle and Casper have discovered that Roberts is the man who swindled Belle. Amos learns that Roberts has similarly beguiled two other women and calls Willy, telling him to stall the wedding until he arrives in town. When Willy kisses Gerry, she finally realizes that he is the man for her, and happily agrees to marry him after Roberts is arrested for bigamy. A fire alarm interrupts the end of the ceremony, but Gerry is too enthralled by Willy's kisses to care.

The one thing Dan will miss about not being a ball player is the casual friendship he has with a bunch of disadvantaged boys at his team's ballpark. Without knowing their full stories, Dan could always manage to get a few of them into the ballpark to watch games for free. When Dan learns that two of them, Skippy and Hank, will be sent to reform school, with the probable outcome being they growing up to be adult criminals due to that experience, Dan feels he has no choice but to take the two with him to Texas to try to get them jobs on ranches. Dan learns both that city boys being thrown into the deep end in ranching duties doesn't sit well with the locals, and that there are just as many disadvantaged boys in the country as there are in the city, they who just want three square meals they can call their own. Dan is able to convince his initially reluctant fellow ranchers to donate property and seed funds for a pilot project for a boys' ranch where they can raise their own food, have a roof over their heads, have some proper, caring adult guidance, and get a decent education in the process, the ranchers who only agree on the condition that Dan manage the ranch. With the ranch up, running and thriving, Susan worries most about a younger boy named Butch Taylor who doesn't seem to have ever learned how to be a real boy, while Dan has to worry about Skippy, who doesn't respond to authority, who just wants to live on his own rules, and who only understands what money can do in whatever manner he can get it. As such, Skippy may threaten the pilot moving into a permanent situation, one where all the other boys are responding in this supportive environment.

Pam then goes to the theater, where harried stage manager Rick Castle misunderstands her intentions when she sings one of Ty's songs, and instead of buying the song, offers Pam a job as a featured singer. Sherry quickly accepts the offer for Pam, but before Pam can tell Ty the good news, she is angered when she sees him kissing Lynn. As Pam is leaving Ty's apartment, she is hit by a car, and although she is not seriously hurt, the doctor's warning about potential amnesia gives her an idea. Telling Sherry that she wants to teach Ty a lesson, Pam pretends to have amnesia and tells the worried Ty that she does not know who he is. Castle, who is developing feelings for Pam himself, overhears the two women discussing their scheme but plays along by sending Pam to mind-reader Milo Edwards, who pretends to be a psychiatrist. Time passes as Pam devotes herself to rehearsals, and Ty, who now realizes how much Pam means to him, tries to help her regain her memory. Pam finally succumbs to Ty's romantic attentions, but more complications ensue when one of his songs, pushed by Pam, is incorporated in the "Vanities" by Castle, even though Ty has used the melody for a jingle for radio sponsor John Clark. Castle, who believes that Pam wrote the tune, tells Ty about the amnesia ruse and makes him think that Pam did it to escape from him. Disillusioned, Ty breaks with Pam, and on opening night, the heartbroken Pam confesses to Castle that Ty is the real author of the song. Realizing that Pam is still in love with Ty, Castle assures her that all will be well, then hides from Clark's lawyer, John Hawks, who attempts to serve him with a summons to prevent the revue from using Ty's song in the finale. The show starts as planned and is a huge success, and as the finale begins, Sherry brings Ty backstage. Moved by Pam's performance of his song, Ty tears up the legal documents and kisses Pam when she finishes singing.
