- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsBrad PittDiane KrugerEli RothIn Nazi-occupied France during World War II, a plan to assassinate Nazi leaders by a group of Jewish U.S. soldiers coincides with a theatre owner's vengeful plans for the same.
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsLeonardo DiCaprioBrad PittMargot RobbieA faded television actor and his stunt double strive to achieve fame and success in the final years of Hollywood's Golden Age in 1969 Los Angeles.
- DirectorBruce A. EvansStarsKevin CostnerDemi MooreWilliam HurtA well-respected businessman is sometimes controlled by his murder and mayhem-loving alter ego.Bad performances all around, a credulity-straining plot, and a "vibe" that feels inseparable from the year 2007. This one doesn't have much going for it.
- DirectorJim SharmanStarsTim CurrySusan SarandonBarry BostwickA newly-engaged couple have a breakdown in an isolated area and must seek shelter at the bizarre residence of Dr. Frank-n-Furter.
- DirectorDrew GoddardStarsKristen ConnollyChris HemsworthAnna HutchisonFive college friends head out to a remote cabin for a getaway, but things don't go as planned when they start getting killed. They soon discover that there is more to the cabin than it seems.Very cutesy and gimmicky, and contemptuous toward its audience in a way that feels more sanctimonious than fair.
- DirectorRené LalouxStarsBarry BostwickJennifer DrakeEric BauginOn a faraway planet where blue giants rule, oppressed humanoids rebel against their machine-like leaders.A product of its time. An on-the-nose allegory which, while giving occasional food-for-thought via its visceral audience-insertion technique, isn't particularly original.
- DirectorBenny SafdieJosh SafdieStarsAdam SandlerJulia FoxIdina MenzelWith his debts mounting and angry collectors closing in, a fast-talking New York City jeweler risks everything in hope of staying afloat and alive.Although it was touted as a radical break for Adam Sandler from his screechy, goofy man-child persona, this movie actually contained many plot points which forced him to reprise his tired, slapstick shtick, which I won't spoil, but will put you on guard for. Other than that, it is an exception in the context of this list, for being well-paced and plotted, and delivered well by the crew of players and technical creatives, while being an unpleasant viewing experience. It succeeds in putting you on edge for the entirety of its runtime, which makes it deserving of commendation, but it's a draining movie which gives you no reason to revisit it.
- DirectorFrancis Ford CoppolaStarsGary OldmanWinona RyderAnthony HopkinsThe centuries old vampire Count Dracula comes to England to seduce his barrister Jonathan Harker's fiancée Mina Murray and inflict havoc in the foreign land.I abandoned it part-way through. Keanu Reeves, who is usually irredeemably sub-par, was actually so singularly awful that he 1) made Winona Ryder look like Meryl Streep in comparison; and 2) served as a black hole which sucked all other elements of the film into his bottomless pit of cringe-inducing cluelessness and utter, utter incompetence. I looked forward to this telling, but the suffocating camp, coupled with baffling and fatal casting choices, made it not worth committing any time to.
- DirectorFede AlvarezStarsStephen LangJane LevyDylan MinnetteHoping to walk away with a massive fortune, a trio of thieves break into the house of a blind man who isn't as helpless as he seems."Wait Until Dark" meets "A Band Apart" could be an intriguing synthesis, but this film, for its occasional flashes of storytelling competence and interest in exploring the potential of the premise, seems more interested in bizarre plot twists which not only add nothing, but actually compromise the considerable suspense that had been carefully built and earned up to that point, taking the viewer out of the picture, and making the final product laughably nonsensical.
- DirectorAri AsterStarsFlorence PughJack ReynorVilhelm BlomgrenA couple travels to Northern Europe to visit a rural hometown's fabled Swedish mid-summer festival. What begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult. Not as creepy as it believes itself to be. A slow-burn which culminates in a not particularly surprising fashion. A mediocre work in the "Wicker Man" vein of pastoral horror, which might be a serviceable, workmanlike pretext for a social outing or get-together, but not a movie worthy of the hype.
- DirectorJennifer KentStarsEssie DavisNoah WisemanDaniel HenshallA single mother and her child fall into a deep well of paranoia when an eerie children's book titled "Mister Babadook" manifests in their home. This is a movie infatuated with its own pseudo-profundity. The performance of the lead is worthy of praise, but the reputation that the ham-fisted allegory has inexplicably received for being "deep" is as maddening as it is inexplicable.
- DirectorNicolas Winding RefnStarsRyan GoslingCarey MulliganBryan CranstonA mysterious Hollywood action film stuntman gets in trouble with gangsters when he tries to help his neighbor's husband rob a pawn shop while serving as his getaway driver.Perhaps I'd be more inclined to charity on a re-watch, but this seems to be a prime example of style over substance.
- DirectorChris PeckoverStarsOlivia DeJongeLevi MillerEd OxenbouldOn a quiet suburban street, a babysitter must defend a twelve-year-old boy from intruders, only to discover it's far from a normal home invasion.More or less the premise of Home Alone, if the psychopathy of Kevin McCallister was presented in an unvarnished disturbing fashion, not done-up in the cutesy "hijinks" garb it is in the wretched film series. Beyond this basic germ of an idea - "what if we made clear the disturbing implications of Home Alone?" - this movie is short on ideas, realism, characters worthy of emotional investment, etc. Nasty, yet not in a thought-provoking or vicariously enjoyable way.
- DirectorVincent GalloStarsVincent GalloChristina RicciBen GazzaraAfter being released from prison, Billy is set to visit his parents with his wife, whom he does not actually have. This provokes Billy to act out, as he kidnaps a girl and forces her to act as his wife for the visit.Unwatchable. Vincent Gallo might be the most self-absorbed, delusional, oblivious wanker to ever be granted the label "auteur." After 5 separate attempts, I could only stomach 20 minutes in total.
- DirectorJim JarmuschStarsRoberto BenigniSteven WrightIn a vignette called "Strange to meet you," Roberto sits at a small table in a coffee bar. Five cups of coffee and two ashtrays are in front of him; he drinks and smokes. Steven joins him. They start a conversation about cigarettes and coffee. Steven likes to drink coffee before he sleeps, so he can dream faster. The conversation jumps around. "You know my mother?" asks Roberto. Steven describes coffee Popsicles. They switch seats; then switch back. Steven has to leave for a dental appointment he's not looking forward to. Roberto makes a startling offer, inspired no doubt by the coffee and cigarettes.
- DirectorDennis HopperStarsPeter FondaDennis HopperJack NicholsonTwo bikers head from L.A. to New Orleans through the open country and desert lands, and along the way they meet a man who bridges a counter-culture gap of which they had been unaware.A product of its time in the worst possible way.
- DirectorBobcat GoldthwaitStarsJoel MurrayTara Lynne BarrMackenzie Brooke SmithOn a mission to rid society of its most repellent citizens, terminally ill Frank makes an unlikely accomplice in 16-year-old Roxy.Easily one of the worst things I've ever seen. Horrible on every level. Alienating, ham-fisted, undigested sanctimony, hypocrisy, and dipshit fury from a director whose previous work (World's Greatest Dad) managed to work productively with preoccupations.
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsUma ThurmanDavid CarradineDaryl HannahAfter awakening from a four-year coma, a former assassin wreaks vengeance on the team of assassins who betrayed her.
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsUma ThurmanDavid CarradineMichael MadsenThe Bride continues her quest of vengeance against her former boss and lover Bill, the reclusive bouncer Budd, and the treacherous, one-eyed Elle.
- DirectorWilliam FriedkinStarsMatthew McConaugheyEmile HirschJuno TempleWhen a debt puts a young man's life in danger, he turns to putting a hit out on his evil mother in order to collect the insurance.
- DirectorS. Craig ZahlerStarsMel GibsonVince VaughnTory KittlesOnce two overzealous cops get suspended from the force, they must delve into the criminal underworld to get their proper compensation.
- DirectorJoel CoenEthan CoenStarsJohn GetzFrances McDormandDan HedayaThe owner of a seedy small-town Texas bar discovers that one of his employees is having an affair with his wife. A chaotic chain of misunderstandings, lies, and mischief ensues after he devises a plot to have them murdered.
- DirectorJames CameronStarsLeonardo DiCaprioKate WinsletBilly ZaneA seventeen-year-old aristocrat falls in love with a kind but poor artist aboard the luxurious, ill-fated R.M.S. Titanic.
- DirectorLana WachowskiLilly WachowskiStarsKeanu ReevesLaurence FishburneCarrie-Anne MossWhen a beautiful stranger leads computer hacker Neo to a forbidding underworld, he discovers the shocking truth--the life he knows is the elaborate deception of an evil cyber-intelligence.
