- DirectorJim CapobiancoPierre-Luc GranjonStarsMatt BerryDaisy RidleyMarion CotillardInventing flying contraptions, war machines and studying cadavers, Leonardo da Vinci tackles the meaning of life itself with the help of French princess Marguerite de Nevarre.I am all for the recent rise of mixed media animation, ushered in by 2018's 'Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse' and taken to new heights by this summer's 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.' 'The Inventor' is based on the twilight years of Leonardo da Vinci and promises to be a more subdued stylistic mash-up, pairing stop motion animation with more traditional 2D techniques. With Stephen Fry, Matt Berry and Marion Cotillard providing VO and themes of experimentation, science, and discovery in the mix, I can think of no better way to celebrate Virgo season.
- DirectorGareth EdwardsStarsJohn David WashingtonMadeleine Yuna VoylesGemma ChanAgainst the backdrop of a war between humans and robots with artificial intelligence, a former soldier finds the secret weapon, a robot in the form of a young child. The absolute torrent of Star Wars titles that have followed Gareth Edwards' 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' have not made me forget my fondness for that first tangential film. Released back in 2016, aka A Simpler Time™, it won me over with its solemn storytelling and lanky, sharp-tongued droid, K-2SO. I trust Edwards with sci-fi implicitly, especially when it comes to robots who blur the line between welcome advances and weaponized adroitness. 'The Creator,' his first feature since 'Rogue One' looks to be worth the seven-year wait.
- DirectorYorgos LanthimosStarsEmma StoneMark RuffaloWillem DafoeAn account of the fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter, a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter.Sure, 'Poor Things' just snagged a Golden Lion, the top prize of the Venice Film Festival, but I scarcely needed convincing to be in a Victorian-level hysteria about this Yorgos Lanthimos costume drama. 'The Favourite' proved he understands the piquancy of pairing the grotesque and the gorgeous, and a gothic tale with Frankenstein DNA demands both in equal measure.
- DirectorHayao MiyazakiStarsSoma SantokiMasaki SudaKô ShibasakiIn the wake of his mother's death and his father's remarriage, a headstrong boy named Mahito ventures into a dreamlike world shared by both the living and the dead. One of my deepest cinefile shames is that I've never seen Studio Ghibli's 'Grave of the Fireflies,' but it's a self-preservation tactic as all I've ever heard is how emotionally decimating it is. 'The Boy and the Heron,' the latest Ghibli offering and ostensibily Hayao Miyazaki's last, premiered at TIFF and will seemingly cover similar territory but at least we can look forward to a Miyazaki constant: soothing scenes of scrumptiously drawn comfort food to balance the fever dream of grief, existentialism, and anthropromorphic birds.
- CreatorKatie KrentzPatrick McHaleStarsElijah WoodCollin DeanMelanie LynskeyTwo brothers find themselves lost in a mysterious land and try to find their way home.If you live in a climate that refuses to comply with the autumnal mandate spreading across social media this month, retreat into nature via 'Over the Garden Wall' or 'The Secret Garden.' Both are trending and both hold up beautifully, with the former inspiring cottagecore Etsy shops galore and the latter celebrating its 30th anniversary. The dreamy, atmospheric settings of both will have you feeling fall in your bones in no time.
