Danny Boyle's family friendly film about a 7-year-old boy who finds a bag full of cash. He wants to give to charity and help the poor, but his older brother has different ideas. This story could have turned into a disaster in other hands but Boyle and screenwriter Frank Cottrell Boyce turn this into a refreshing slice-of-life with realistic characters and situations. It's touching without it becoming schmaltzy, magical without becoming corny and hilarious without any of the humour being forced, it's all just so natural. The older brother could have been turned into a typical idiotic bully, but here he is actually intelligent and helpful, whilst still being a big brother who "knows better". A very joyful and beautifully constructed film but completely unique from what you'd expect.

Hilarious and clever send-up of sci-fi shows, the actors that star in them, and the fans that idolise them. I'm not the biggest sci-fi geek around so I probably miss some of the humour but I still had an absolute ball watching this. The casting is one of the most impressive things about this film, because the actors are all pitch perfect, and the wrong casting could have brought this film down. Not to worry, this is one fun ride.

As corny and predictable as it is, it's some good-natured fun with mostly likeable characters. The storyline with the absent father reappearing in his daughter's life is quite frustrating to watch however and does take up a large chunk of runtime but by the end I had a smile on my face and that has to count for something.
