- DirectorSantiago ÁlvarezThough lesser known than Leni Riefenstahl's OLYMPIA or Kon Ichikawa's TOKYO OLYMPIAD, Santiago Alvarez's tribute to Cuba's sporting triumphs is no less breathtaking. A ship of athletes training on the rough seas becomes a symbol of Castro's Cuba, the games projected on the backdrop of political struggle: "This is the story of a ship and of a sports delegation whom the ENEMY tried to stop from participating in the Tenth Central American and Caribbean Games." Alvarez's bristling montage may be put to didactic ends but there's a significant remainder of joy in his celebration of work. Rhetoric is inseparable from rhythm as Alvarez remains ever attentive to the specific manifestations of the body politic.

- DirectorMiao WangChina is a country where dissenting voices have been systematically purged and propaganda efficiently woven into every aspect of life. Art has often served as a political tool, particularly during the Cultural Revolution following Mao's direct orders. This inescapably politically and culturally turbulent atmosphere stipulated a movement of contemporary Chinese artists' diaspora to New York City. "Yellow Ox Mountain" is a short documentary that portrays the artistic endeavors and the personal journeys of two such contemporary Chinese artists, Zhang Hongtu (b. 1943) and Zhang Jian-Jun (b. 1955), whose lives and work span from the post-Cultural Revolution political environment of China to today's thriving Chinese contemporary art community of New York. They were determined to escape from the artistic leash imposed by the Chinese cultural control. Each represents a different personal background and experience of the Cultural Revolution, and very different reactions expressed through their artwork. Yet, there is a shared sense of constant cultural negotiations as they concurrently look back to their traditions and forward to the multifaceted creative influences of New York.

These stereotypes treat girls of all ages as sexual objects, and exercise a damaging effect on their identities. - DirectorTom ClanceyPaul S. GoodmenRalph VituccioStarsDan DunlapAt Alang, in India, on a six-mile stretch of oily, smoky beach, 40,000 migrant workers tear apart, literally by hand, half of the world's discarded ships. This is one of the most dangerous industrial sites in the world. Every ship is a sump of toxic waste. If workers aren't killed on the job from explosions or falling objects, exposure to toxic waste, for many, will result in long-tern illness or early death. The environmental impact has been devastating. Environmental and Human Rights Organizations are outraged. Yet shipbreaking has become a booming business for a few privileged shipyard owners in less developed countries such as India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Shipbreaking in less developed countries has become a major international concern. It remains extremely easy for a ship owner to circumvent existing laws that aim to protect developing countries from the dumping of toxic wastes. Environmental and human rights organizations argue that the International Maritime Organization or I.M.O., which is responsible for regulating the shipping industry, is not being held accountable for the human rights abuses and pollution caused by shipbreaking practices in South Asia today. Ship breakers and local authorities argue that the economic benefits far outweigh the environmental degradation and occupational hazards. Do we all share in a global ecology? What are the responsibilities of all the stakeholders in a global economy? This industry serves an important short-term need, but where is the balance between environmental protection, human rights and commercial profits?
