William Shatner regrets "not being equipped emotionally to deal with" Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. Shatner also reminisces about the interracial kiss his character and Nichelle Nichols' Lt. Uhura shared in Season 3 of Star Trek: The Original Series. Despite Captain Kirk being killed off in 1994's Star Trek: Generations, Shatner's legacy as the Enterprise's leader endures to this day.
“I failed. In my mind, I failed horribly.” William Shatner doesn’t mince words when it comes to describing what he regrets “most” where his decades-long career playing the iconic Star Trek character, James T. Kirk, is concerned. That disappointing moment came when he sat in the director’s chair for 1989’s much-maligned Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. And the veteran actor dished on his failure with The Final Frontier in a brand-new interview. Shatner told The Hollywood Reporter:

Tng established two-part stories and season cliffhangers, building on The Original Series' foundation. The top 10 Tng two-parters all feature well-developed stories that allow each character to shine. Iconic episodes like "Chain of Command" and "The Best of Both Worlds" showcase Tng's storytelling depth.
Throughout its seven seasons, Star Trek: The Next Generation had some of Star Trek's best two-part stories. Following the adventures of Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the USS Enterprise-d, Tng began in 1987 with a feature-length premiere entitled "Encounter at Farpoint." After its initial release, this premiere was broken into two episodes, making it Tng's first two-part story. Two-part stories would become a staple of Star Trek moving forward, with nearly every season of Tng, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Star Trek: Voyager incorporating them. Tng also established the practice of ending each season with a cliffhanger that was resolved in the first episode of the following season.

Captain Pike of "Strange New Worlds" is set to become the most important active Captain in the Star Trek franchise. As "Star Trek: Discovery" and "Star Trek: Picard" come to an end, Captain Pike steps into the spotlight on Paramount+. Pike's portrayal embodies classic Star Trek virtues while modernizing for the 21st century, making him a worthy lead.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) will become Star Trek's most important active Captain when Star Trek: Discovery ends. Pike was reintroduced in Star Trek: Discovery season 2, updating the character from the original version played by Jeffrey Hunter in Star Trek's original pilot, "The Cage." The revamped Captain Pike, Lt. Spock (Ethan Peck), and Number One (Rebecca Romijn) proved to be so popular that they received their own spinoff, the critically acclaimed Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

If Patrick Stewart had not returned, Commander Shelby could have become the new First Officer of the Enterprise-d. Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry originally envisioned a female First Officer in the series. While many women have since held the position, Number One in Star Trek: The Original Series was the first official female First Officer.
If Patrick Stewart had not returned as Captain Jean-Luc Picard for Star Trek: The Next Generation season 4, Star Trek could have fulfilled one of Gene Roddenberry's original plans for the franchise. After Tng season 3 came to a close with "The Best of Both Worlds, Part 1," rumors swirled that Patrick Stewart would not be returning to the show. The final shot of Tng season 3 is of Commander William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) giving the command to fire on an attacking Borg cube, knowing that the assimilated Captain Picard would likely be killed in the blast.

While recently scrolling Twitter, an interesting anecdote came to my attention. In the fabled George Lucas outline for a Star Wars sequel trilogy, a treatment which the filmmaker shared with the Walt Disney Company when he sold Lucasfilm for $4 billion, Lucas apparently had a strange vision for Luke Skywalker: He wanted the older version of Skywalker to be like a character in a movie Lucas almost made before Star Wars. He wanted him to be, in essence, Marlon Brando’s Col. Kurtz from Apocalypse Now, right down to the bald head and rambling gibberish.
This detail is not new. In fact, Pablo Hidalgo first confirmed the information in Star Wars: Fascinating Facts (2020). In that book (via Total Film/GamesRadar+), Hidalgo wrote, “Although Luke Skywalker only barely appears in The Force Awakens, the concept artists had a lot to imagine based on the fragments of the story they were hearing as it developed.

Martin Scorsese loves John Ford's "The Searchers" for its subversion of the classic John Wayne persona. The character of Ethan Edwards in "The Searchers" is similar to Travis Bickle in Scorsese's "Taxi Driver." "The Searchers" has lasting replay value, with the movie's meaning changing over time and its open-ended nature providing a mystery for viewers.
Even the greatest filmmakers in history have their favorite movies and cinematic inspirations. Look no further than the peerless Martin Scorsese, often hailed as the greatest living American filmmaker currently working in Hollywood. As Scorsese makes the promotional rounds for his stirring new dramatic epic, Killers of the Flower Moon, the director has once again professed his undying love for John Ford's classic 1956 western, The Searchers, a movie that has been informing his characters and stylistic techniques since Taxi Driver.

Bruce Greenwood brings accessibility, openness, and wisdom to the role of Captain Pike in Star Trek, contrasting with the original portrayal. Jeffrey Hunter's original Captain Pike was more brooding and ambivalent about his place in Starfleet. Anson Mount revitalizes the character of Captain Pike in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, showcasing greater nuance and emotional depth.
Star Trek's (2009) Bruce Greenwood discusses how his movie version of Captain Christopher Pike differs from Jeffrey Hunter's original in 1965’s unaired Star Trek: The Original Series pilot, "The Cage." Appearing alongside later Star Trek veterans Leonard Nimoy and Majel Barrett, Hunter stars as Captain of the USS Enterprise – a precursor of Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner). Styled as straighter laced and more brooding than subsequent versions of the character, Hunter’s Pike was rejected by NBC for being “too intellectual” (read: boring). 2023 introduced new and iconic villains in Star Trek, including the Borg, Changelings, and the Gorn. Star Trek heroes faced frightening foes, such as a former yeoman seeking revenge, an overbearing Vulcan mother, and a deadly predator pet. Star Trek: The Original Series introduced Captain Christopher Pike as the Enterprise's first commander before Captain Kirk took over. The initial pilot episode, "The Cage," was rejected for being too cerebral, but it was creatively retconned as a prequel in later episodes. "The Cage" has become an official part of Star Trek canon and has influenced subsequent series, with multiple prequels exploring events before The Original Series.
The success of Star Trek: The Original Series starring William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk meant that the then-only mission of the USS Enterprise commanded by Captain Christopher Pike (Jeffrey Hunter) became Star Trek's first prequel. Robert Butler, the Emmy-winning, go-to pilot director who helmed the first episodes of such acclaimed shows as Batman, Star Trek, Hill Street Blues and Moonlighting, died Nov. 3 in Los Angeles, his family announced. He was 95.
Butler also co-created the Pierce Brosnan-starring Remington Steele (and helmed its pilot, of course), directed the first episode of Hogan’s Heroes in 1965, and called the first shots and set the tone for, Glenn Gordon Caron’s Moonlighting, Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Sisters and The Division.
In 1973, he directed the William Holden-starring The Blue Knight — the first four-hour television miniseries — at NBC and then got the CBS series adaptation of the Joseph Wambaugh novel that starred George Kennedy off on the right foot.
Butler also helmed two episodes of The Twilight Zone (the fifth-season installments “Caesar and Me,” starring his old friend, Jackie Cooper, and “The Encounter”) and worked on The Dick Van Dyke Show,...

Tendi's title of Mistress of the Winter Constellations signifies her powerful position in the Orion Syndicate, commanding influence and respect. Tendi's choice to join Starfleet and give up her prime title shows her commitment to a different path, defying Orion stereotypes. Star Trek: Lower Decks has redefined the Orions as a species, presenting three-dimensional characters and deepening Orion society, making them more important to the Star Trek franchise.
Before deciding to join Starfleet, Lt. D'Vana Tendi (Noël Wells) of Star Trek: Lower Decks was an Orion pirate known as the Mistress of the Winter Constellations, but what exactly does this title signify? As one of the few Orions in Starfleet, Tendi strives to change the perceptions many carry about her planet and its people. Star Trek: Lower Decks introduces Lieutenant D'Vana Tendi, an Orion character who defies stereotypes and brings depth to Orion culture. Orions have a complex history in Star Trek, being depicted as slavers and pirates, but Star Trek: Lower Decks evolves their portrayal by showcasing a rich and lived-in culture. Orions continue to play a role in Star Trek's future, with the Emerald Chain in Star Trek: Discovery season 3 representing a criminal union of Orions and Andorians. However, not all Orions align with the criminal organization, as seen in a Federation conference where some advocate for emancipation.
Thanks to Star Trek: Lower Decks, Orions are now one of Star Trek's best aliens. Orions are one of Star Trek's first aliens, debuting in Star Trek: The Original Series' first pilot, "The Cage", when the Talosians tempt Captain Christopher Pike (Jeffrey Hunter) with a vision of Vina (Susan Oliver) as a scantily-clad,...

Martin Scorsese considers John Wayne's The Searchers to be the best Western ever made, describing it as a masterpiece with a deeply painful core. The Searchers has had a significant influence on Scorsese's movies, inspiring scenes and characters in films like Taxi Driver and Mean Streets. The Searchers is also a favorite among the "movie brats," a group of influential directors including Spielberg and Lucas, who cited it as a major influence.
Martin Scorsese's favorite Western starring John Wayne has had a big influence on his career. Scorsese hasn't made his passion for cinema or filmmaking a secret, and he is essentially a living archive of the medium's history. He loves everything from the trashiest B-movie to the most highbrow drama, which is something that's reflected in Martin Scorsese's own movies. He has helmed everything from gangster epics to psychological horrors to biopics and everything in between.

Futurama's Zapp Brannigan is the scene-stealing captain of the Nimbus, known for his arrogance and constant failures. During Futurama's development, Zapp Brannigan had a few inspirations, including radio disc jockeys and two famous actors. Zapp Brannigan embodies toxic masculinity, which allows Futurama to comment on contemporary gender issues.
Futurama is chock-full of scene-stealing supporting figures, from Carol "Mom" Miller to Morbo the Annihilator. Zapp Brannigan, however, is in a class by himself as a buffoonish military captain convinced of his own infallibility and routinely failing upward though disaster after disaster. His preening arrogance is one of the show's most reliable source of gags, and because he's a supporting figure (if a major one), the writers only bring him onboard when they have something terrific for him to do. Of course, this also raises the question of who or what inspired Zapp Brannigan's character.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 filming delayed due to WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, potentially airing in late 2024 or early 2025. This article contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks."
"Star Trek: Lower Decks" season 4, episode 4, titled "Something Borrowed, Something Green," takes place largely on the Orion homeworld, the place where Lieutenant D'Vana Tendi (Noël Wells) hails from. She is there to attend the wedding of her sister D'Erica but also to face the familial legacy she deliberately left behind when she joined Starfleet. The episode features a lot of lingering sororal resentment and multiple mysterious, violent, sexy figures from Tendi's past.
More important to Trekkies, however, are the numerous details about Orion life. "Something Borrowed" is the first time we've really had a good look at the Orions and what they're like in their element.
Orions, of course, first appeared on "Star Trek" as early as the "Original Series" pilot, "The Cage," when Captain Pike (Jeffrey Hunter) was seduced by a green-skinned woman at a Roman-style orgy.

Captain Pike's character moment in Star Trek: Discovery reveals his commitment to Starfleet ideals and showcases his willingness to sacrifice his own well-being for the sake of others. Through a vision at a Klingon monastery, Pike sees his eventual fate, including a scarred face and a full-body wheelchair, but he refuses to let that deter him from upholding the values of Starfleet. Pike's decision to accept his fate and continue serving as a Starfleet captain, despite knowing the challenges and sacrifices that lie ahead, epitomizes the true essence of a galactic hero in the Star Trek universe.

This article contains spoilers for "Star Trek: Lower Decks" season 4, episode 2.
"Star Trek: Lower Decks" season 4, episode 2 is called "I Have No Bones Yet I Must Flee," which is a reference to the 1967 Harlan Ellison short story "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream." The plot, however, is an amusing reference to the original "Star Trek" pilot episode "The Cage." Although footage from "The Cage" was eventually repurposed into a two-part 1966 episode called "The Menagerie," the notable "Star Trek" pilot wasn't aired on TV in its uncut form until 1988.
The plot of "The Cage," for the uninitiated, took the Enterprise to the planet of Talos IV. There, Captain Pike (Jeffrey Hunter) was kidnapped by the large-headed, psychic Talosians. The aliens didn't understand human emotions and projected fantasies into his head to test out feelings of fear, lust, and anger. Pike found that he could resist their psychic attacks by projecting rage into their heads.

In the expansive "Star Trek" universe, some of its brightest stars embarked on unforeseen journeys, abruptly departing the franchise to both the dismay and intrigue of fandom.
Why didn't Kirstie Alley return as the beloved Lt. Saavik? What prompted Jeffrey Hunter to relinquish the role of Captain Pike? Who ejected Gates McFadden's Dr. Crusher from the airlock? How come Diana Muldaur, her replacement, endured only a single season? Why did Wil Wheaton part ways with Wesley Crusher? And why was Grace Lee Whitney, as Yeoman Janice Rand, dropped from the cast even before the original series premiered in 1966?
These departures stemmed from a myriad of forces: financial constraints, contract negotiations, miscasting, yearnings for new horizons or strange new opportunities, life-altering events, creative and personal conflicts, or a blend of these influences. Most were unexpected and frequently controversial. Whether these exits bolstered or hindered the franchise, the judgment is yours,...

In December of 1964, principal photography finished on the pilot of Star Trek, featuring captain Christopher Pike (played by The Searchers’ Jeffrey Hunter) as the commander of the Enterprise. When the show’s first episode finally aired almost two years later, Pike was nowhere to be found. The initial pilot had been scrapped and re-shot, with William Shatner’s James T. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has successfully reinvented classic Star Trek characters and offers the possibility of introducing more in season 3. The prequel series brilliantly reimagined characters like Captain Christopher Pike and Ensign Nyota Uhura, adding new layers to their characters. There are several characters from Star Trek: The Original Series, including Carol Marcus, Gary Mitchell, and Janice Rand, who could make an appearance in Strange New Worlds.

In the latest episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Kirk confesses his feelings for LA'an, but also reveals he is in a complicated relationship with a woman named Carol. Kirk's relationship with Carol Marcus is not consistent with the source material, suggesting that Snw exists in an alternate timeline. The revelation of Kirk and Carol's relationship challenges the established narrative of Tos, opening up possibilities for new storylines and character dynamics in Snw.
The wait is over. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' (Snw) La’an (Christina Chong) finally told James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) she has feelings for him in the latest episode of the Paramount+ streaming series. During Season 2, Episode 9's Subspace Rhapsody, Kirk admits he feels something for LA'an. Where to Watch Powered by The position of yeoman in Star Trek originated from the US Navy and served as assistants to the Captain, performing administrative work and attending to various duties. In the original series, women rarely served as high-ranking officers, so the yeoman position allowed for more female representation, often portraying them as attractive objects of desire. In modern Star Trek shows, the position of yeoman has been abandoned due to advancements in technology, making their administrative work unnecessary and easily automated.
Though various yeomen appeared over the course of Star Trek: The Original Series, subsequent Star Trek series have rarely featured crew members with that title. The most prominent yeoman character was Janice Rand (Grace Lee Whitney), who served as the yeoman for Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) aboard the USS Enterprise. Warning: Contains Spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 9, "Subspace Rhapsody".
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' musical episode brings together Kirk and Number One for the first time. The episode establishes that Number One was responsible for training one of Starfleet's legendary captains, giving her an impressive legacy after Star Trek's failed pilot. The reason Number One didn't join Kirk's Star Trek: The Original Series Enterprise was due to complaints by test audiences and network executives, who objected to the character.
As well as being Star Trek's first-ever musical in its 57-year history, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds teams up two classic characters for the very first time in canon. "Subspace Rhapsody" is an extraordinary achievement for Strange New Worlds because it manages to tie many of the overarching themes of season 2 with what could have been a hollow gimmick episode. Ask most cinephiles about the spaghetti western and Sergio Leone’s name will most likely be invoked. As for those who’ve delved a little deeper into the genre, chances are that they’ll name-drop one or both of the other Sergios: Sergio Corbucci (Django) and Sergio Sollima (The Big Gundown).
Back in 2021, Arrow Video’s Vengeance Trails box set aimed to broaden viewers’ horizons of the spaghetti western by spotlighting works by directors like Lucio Fulci, Massimo Dallamano, and Antonio Margheriti, whose names are more often associated with other genres. Now along comes Blood Money, which unveils several lesser-known yet excellent examples of the genre. The thematic through line this time out concerns the value placed on human life. As the grizzled protagonist of Find a Place to Die puts it: “Madness and greed were in men’s hearts a long time before you came along.”

Anson Mount's portrayal of Captain Pike on Star Trek: Discovery was so popular that Paramount+ ordered a spin-off focusing on his continuing adventures on the Enterprise. Captain Pike in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is deeply empathetic, possesses a strong moral center, and values the opinions of his crew, making him one of Starfleet's best captains. Anson Mount brings charm, warmth, and a sense of hope to the role of Captain Pike, making him more likable and less of a brash action hero compared to the original portrayal by Jeffrey Hunter.

Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2, Episode 7 - "Those Old Scientists"
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 7 challenges the negative perception of Orions in the 23rd century, as Ensigns Boimler and Mariner change Captain Pike's perspective on the species. The Orions in Star Trek were initially depicted as smugglers and slaves, but recent Paramount+ shows like Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds have explored their culture and presented them in a more diverse and positive light. Lower Decks character Ensign D'Vana Tendi defies Orion stereotypes and demonstrates that Orions are not all brutish pirates, while Strange New Worlds' episode "Those Old Scientists" pushes Captain Pike to confront his assumptions about the Orions and forge a peaceful solution with them.

All three will become legendary for their voyages aboard the USS Enterprise in Star Trek: Tos.
In Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 6, Lt. Kirk beams aboard the Starship Enterprise to see his brother, Lt. Sam Kirk (Dan Jeannotte). But the Kirk brothers' reunion quickly goes south, and James is left alone until his curiosity is piqued by Uhura, who is in emotional distress.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds reinvented Captain Christopher Pike for the better, and Anson Mount truly breathes new life into the character. Originally played by Jeffrey Hunter, Captain Pike was introduced in the unaired pilot of Star Trek: The Original Series titled "The Cage." Though this episode is widely available to watch now, many Trek fans met Captain Pike (Sean Kenney) in the two-part Tos episode "The Menagerie." These episodes use footage from "The Cage" to tell the tragic story of Captain Pike's last mission, and this story has become an important part of Star Trek lore.
Before Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) took over command of the USS Enterprise, Christopher Pike served as her Captain, embarking on a five-year mission to explore the final frontier. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds follows Captain Pike's journey and brings more depth to his character, as well as the rest of his crew.

Along the way, Pike talked about a previous mission to Rigel VII in which he had lost four crew members. As he continues to work through that failure of a mission, he is taken prisoner by the Talosians and placed into a literal cage.

Here is a breakdown of all USS Enterprise Captains across the various Star Trek movies, live-action series, comics, and books. Beginning with Star Trek: The Original Series, the Starship Enterprise has been at the very heart of the enduring sci-fi franchise created by Gene Roddenberry in 1966. Of course, the two most famous Captains of the Enterprise are James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), who shared the big screen together in 1994's Star Trek Generations, but Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) is quickly achieving greatness in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Warning: This article contains Spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, season 2, episode 3, "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow".A drastic change to the timeline in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds creates the latest of 10 versions of the legendary Captain James T. Kirk (WIlliam Shatner). Sent back to stunt humanity's progress, Romulan time agent Sera (Adelaide Kane) creates an alternate timeline where Earth never founded the Federation. In this timeline, James T Kirk (Paul Wesley) is already Captain of the United Earth Fleet ship Enterprise, and is fighting a war against the Romulan Star Empire. Without the Federation, its member species are forced to deal with the Romulan threat individually, establishing the Empire as a dominant force in the galaxy.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 3, "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow" is far from the only time that Star Trek has introduced an alternate-universe version of Captain James T. Kirk.

Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2, Episode 2, "Ad Astra Per Aspera"The origin of how Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and Number One (Rebecca Romijn) met fascinatingly compares and contrasts to how Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) met Mr. Spock (Zachary Quinto) in J.J. Abrams' 2009 Star Trek movie. Strange New Worlds and Abrams' Star Trek actually take place at roughly the same time; Pike's voyages happen in 2259 of Star Trek's Prime Timeline while Star Trek 2009's 'present-day' happens in 2258 of the alternate Kelvin Timeline.
Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 2 centers on the court-martial of Number One Aka Commander Una Chin-Riley. The USS Enterprise's First Officer was arrested by Starfleet after Una revealed she is Illyrian and lied on her application. Illyrians are a race banned by the United Federation of Planets for culturally practicing genetic modifications. Pike risked...

Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2, Episode 2 - "Ad Astra Per Aspera"A reference to Gilbert & Sullivan musicals made by Lt. Spock (Ethan Peck) during the court-martial of Number One (Rebecca Romijn) in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a deep-cut reference to another Star Trek show. "Ad Astra Per Aspera" is an instant classic of a Star Trek courtroom drama, confronting Starfleet with its problematic attitudes toward those with genetic enhancements. It also provides a considerable amount of backstory for one of Star Trek's more enigmatic characters, Number One, a.k.a. Commander Una Chin-Riley, previously played by Majel Barrett in Star Trek: The Original Series' unaired pilot episode, "The Cage."
In Star Trek's original pilot episode, Number One's defining characteristic appeared to be that she was the only woman that Captain Pike (Jeffrey Hunter) was comfortable with on his bridge. Thankfully, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Number One (Rebecca Romijn) begins season 2 facing a court-martial, something both Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) faced in Star Trek: The Original Series season 1. As the two most famous Star Trek characters, Kirk and Spock have gone up against their fair share of difficulties. While they saved the galaxy multiple times over the course of Tos, they were not always in Starfleet's good graces. Spock would face a court-martial in Tos' two-part episode "The Menagerie," while Kirk would face one a few episodes later in "Court Martial."
Despite his reputation to the contrary, Captain Kirk mostly did what Starfleet asked him to do during Star Trek: The Original Series run. Spock, too, generally followed the rules. And yet, both characters face court-martials during their time serving on the USS Enterprise. In "The Menagerie," Spock does commit a court-martial offense, but...

The second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds exudes even more of the breezy freshness of a sharply written, back-to-basics TV series than its first season. Increasingly, showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers are solving the puzzle of how to make the hoary old Star Trek format new again. A welcome shift away from rigidly serialized storytelling has greatly benefited this prequel series, allowing it to cast off the chains of cause and effect that bind together each episode of Discovery and Picard.
As in the halcyon Star Trek days, each episode of Strange New Worlds explores a new, pulpy sci-fi scenario played for thrills, yuks, or, yes, sometimes heavy-handed progressive grandstanding. The writing this season nails the middle ground between the silly-but-sometimes-smart space operatics of the original series and the warm surrogate-family vibe of The Next Generation. Plots that alternate their focal points channel that Next Gen...
