Very few directors have ever had the kind of run Rob Reiner did as a director between 1984 and 1992. Think about it. This is Spinal Tap, The Sure Thing, Stand By Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Misery and A Few Good Men. Surely, that run alone would be enough to solidify him as one of the greatest Hollywood directors of all time? Those movies are so good it almost doesn’t matter how much money-losing crap he puts out now…and there is a lot of it… and North isn’t even the worst of it! So how did this man go from making a few great movies that defined and elevated our pop culture on so many different levels to suddenly pumping out nothing but heartless, soulless political flicks (did anyone see Lbj?) and rom-coms that are neither romantic nor comedic?
So, how did this jack of...

Season 1 of "The Simpsons" is a whole different beast. You've got brown Mr. Smithers, character designs out of a Dr. Seuss book, and Homer inexplicably sounding like Walter Matthau. It's a charming affair, but it also hasn't yet turned into "The Simpsons" we've come to know and love.
What complicates the first season even more is the way that Fox aired certain episodes out of order. This was famously a much bigger problem with the classic era of "Futurama," but it also led to some inconsistencies in early "Simpsons." While the animation, character designs, and voices were all slowly evolving in the right direction throughout the first three seasons, the out-of-order episodes meant the show would sometimes take a seemingly random, large step back in animation quality. A case in point was the season 1 finale, "Some Enchanted Evening," which inexplicably looked closer to the old bumpers on "The Tracey Ullman Show...

Classic rom-com When Harry Met Sally originally had a more heartbreaking ending where Harry and Sally didn’t get together. Here’s why that was changed.
It’s hard to imagine a rom-com that is more perfect, more iconic than When Harry Met Sally. Rob Reiner’s 1989 classic has long been considered one of the best of the genre and is often looked at as a blueprint for how to make a romantic comedy work.
Well, it turns out that the ending of When Harry Met Sally was originally very different. The current ending sees Harry confess his love for Sally at a New Year’s Eve party and the two get married and live happily ever after.
However, director Rob Reiner recently said in an interview with Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace on CNN (via Deadline) that the ending we all know and love was only conceived after...

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: A Midnight Movie for the Love of a Woman
The cinematic understanding of romance is on the run. It’s a sad topic ahead of Valentine’s Day, I know. But the big romantic gestures and sweeping professions of love that once characterized the rom-com genre are now about as welcome in real life as TikTok therapists are welcome on the big screen. Some people think Leonardo DiCaprio became a star when he acted in James Cameron’s Titanic. Others believe his stardom predated that movie when he starred opposite Claire Danes in Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet. However, the movie that made him an up-and-comer is a film that seems to have been all but erased from his filmography: the 1995 drama The Basketball Diaries, a movie that teamed him with a young Mark Wahlberg, earned good reviews and became a VHS cult hit among teens of the nineties. Yet, it’s a tough film to find unless you’re willing to shell out big bucks for the long, out-of-print Blu-ray (never released in the U.S) or an old-school DVD. You won’t find it on streaming, and it remains an oddly obscure film considering how popular it was in the nineties. What gives?

Robert De Niro has been working in Hollywood for almost six decades now, with eight Oscar nominations to his name and two wins. His most noted collaboration has been with director Martin Scorsese, with whom he has done 10 films, including their latest partnership on “Killers of the Flower Moon,” which was released October 20 through Apple Original Films. In celebration of the western crime epic, let’s take a look back at De Niro’s eight Oscar nominations in 45 years; seven for acting and one for producing.
His first Oscar nomination and victory came on the heels of Francis Ford Coppola’s epic crime film “The Godfather” with the equally successful second installment “The Godfather Part II” (1974), in which De Niro plays a young Vito Corleone, played by Oscar winner Marlon Brando in the first movie. Just like Brando, De Niro triumphed at the 1975 Oscars for the character, albeit in the...

I was about 8 years old when I first met Norman Lear.
My dad, Carl Reiner, was working on Sid Caesar’s Show of Shows and Norman was writing for Colgate Comedy Hour, so they were both in New York. In those days, it was a small world of people who trafficked in sketch comedy. Mel Brooks, Larry Gelbart, Dom DeLuise — all these guys and their families would hang out together. My family and Norman’s family used to have summer houses near each other on Fire Island, and Norman had a daughter, Ellen, who was around my age, so we used to play together.
One day Ellen and I were playing jacks — I was teaching her how, explaining the rules, showing her what to do. Norman came over to watch and he started to laugh. Apparently, I was teaching her in a funny way, which he found hysterical. And he...

If one were to rank all the major streaming services by queerness, Amazon Prime Video would be a pretty tough one to pin down.
On the one hand, you have to give credit where credit is due: One of the service’s very first stabs at original programming was “Transparent,” which in turn was one of the first shows to star a trans main character. That show now has a lot of baggage, but it’s hard to its understate historical significance.
Beyond the thorny topic of “Transparent,” Prime Video does have a good track record of releasing shows with LGBTQ characters and centering their narratives on queer themes; in particular, many of their shows focus on queer women, refreshingly avoiding the centering of gay men that defined queer TV for decades. This spring, the streamer dropped a phenomenal limited series retelling of David Cronenberg’s “Dead Ringers,” starring Rachel Weisz as twin lesbian gynecologists.

Penny Marshall was in a bind. Her new movie was just a few weeks away from the start of filming, and her leading actress had quit over casting issues. She needed someone quickly… but the replacement had to have a very specific skill set: She needed to be able to look like she could play baseball convincingly. The film, of course, was A League of Their Own. Marshall’s choice to play Dottie Hinson was Geena Davis; at the time of the film’s release, Davis explained that she was so excited about the opportunity, she kind of kind of left out the little detail that she wasn’t much good at throwing a ball. (Click on the media bar below to hear Geena Davis) https://www.hollywoodoutbreak.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/Geena_Davis_A_League_Of_Their_Own_.mp3 A League of Their Own is available on DVD, Blu-Ray, and most digital platforms.

Despite what the "manosphere" tries to say, society is far more aware of the influence of age and power dynamics in relationships than it used to be. Sometimes to a disastrous point, as young fans who are less trained than ever to deal with media critically may overreact and miss the point of a piece of fiction. And then there are the people who believe that the existence of LGBTQ+ people is a danger to children. That is, of course, nonsense of a cruel and bigoted kind.
What's true, though, is that an older person can hold all kinds of sway over someone younger, from financial threats to abuse of power in a work or life situation. In fiction, an age gap romance or a relationship with imbalanced power dynamics can be used to explore important themes. Not all stories have aged well, though, and sometimes the behind-the-scenes tales are even worse.

To quote the great Taylor Swift, “August slipped away like a moment in time.” September has arrived, and with it, a countdown to certain films and shows leaving Netflix at the end of the 30-day month. Penny Marshall’s “A League of Their Own” (1992) has one more month to teach you that “There’s no crying in baseball,” and why not watch it in support of the Prime Video series that can’t seem to catch a break? If you’re more in the mood for a childish story and magical whimsy, the person you need is “Nanny McPhee” (2005).
Franchise films exiting the streamer’s rotation this month include “Rocky,” “Rocky II,” “Rocky III,” “Rocky IV” and “Rocky V.” Along with those wrestling movies, other films departing at the end of September are “Snow White & the Huntsman,” “Star Trek,” “Star Trek Into Darkness,” “Titanic” and “Warm Bodies.”

Prime Video’s reimagining of Penny Marshall’s beloved 1992 classic A League of Their Own had been renewed for a second season, but fans were shocked when the streaming service reversed the renewal last week. Will Graham, who co-created A League of Their Own with Abbi Jacobson, took to X/Twitter to discuss the impact of the cancellation and his hopes for season 2.
“Making this show is so hard and so great,” Will Graham wrote. “There’s quite a bit to say about what’s been hard, but at this point that’s in the past. Of course, if we have an avenue to do it well, we will continue the show, and I love seeing the noise you’re making in support of that. The noise matters!“

A League of Their Own co-creator Will Graham wants fans of their since-canceled Amazon series to hold out hope that the show will find a new home, as well as for the Lgbtqia+ community who embraced the queer take on Penny Marshall’s beloved movie of the same name.

Amazon on Aug. 18 reversed its plan for an abbreviated four-episode second and final season of the women in baseball show created by Graham and star Abbi Jacobson. The news came after a months-long negotiation with producers Sony Pictures Television in which the studio reduced the show’s licensing fee in order to get the show picked up for a second season. A League Of Their Own co-creator Will Graham is sharing his thoughts publicly for the first time since it was revealed Friday that the series’ Season 2 renewal had been reversed and the show was ending.
Graham made clear his disappointment, but vowed to continue to try to find a new home for the beloved series, along with a plea and a huge thank you to Lgbtqia+ fans of the show to “please take care of yourselves,” adding “You are not alone.”

“A League of Their Own” co-creator and star Abbi Jacobson has reacted to the news that Amazon has scrapped Season 2 due to the ongoing strikes, calling the decision “bullshit and cowardly.”
On Friday, Variety confirmed that the series — based on the 1992 baseball film of the same name — would no longer be going forward with its shortened final season, which was greenlit in April. “A League of Their Own”, Prime Video’s series inspired by Penny Marshall’s 1992 feature, is no more.
On Friday, Aug. 18, Deadline reported the show had been cancelled, with the streamer deciding to rescind its original announcement that “League” had been picked up for a brief four-episode second season that would conclude the storyline.
According to the outlet, the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes were behind the decision; since production wouldn’t be able to begin on the new episodes until 2024 at the earliest, this would push the premiere date of those episodes to 2025 — resulting in a three-year gap between the first and second seasons.

Amazon has officially pulled the plug on A League of Their Own. Earlier this year, the streamer renewed the series for an abbreviated second season, a move that was already protested by fans of the show. Now it’s canceled the series entirely, and production will not be moving forward.
The series, which premiered in August 2022, was a reboot and expansion of the hit 1992 film, pulling from history to tell more accurate stories about the women who played baseball during World War II. It was a project years in the making, first conceived by Abbi Jacobson and Will Graham in 2017 — the pair got Penny Marshall’s blessing to create the show before her death in 2018.

The Peripheral and A League of Their Own had both been renewed for second seasons, but it was announced today that both shows have been cancelled.
The Peripheral is a sci-fi drama based on William Gibson’s 2014 book of the same name that stars Chloe Grace Moretz as Flynne Fisher, a young woman trying to hold together the pieces of her broken family in a forgotten corner of tomorrow’s America. The retail giant and streamer has reversed course and canceled the queer-themed reboot of Penny Marshall’s 1992 film after previously renewing the series for a four-episode second and final season. Sources say Sony Pictures Television, which produces the show, plans to shop League with the hopes that the series can find a new home for season two. Scripts for all four episodes of what was planned to be the conclusion of the series were completed before the Writers Guild of America went on strike May 2.
The decision to cancel the series from co-creators/showrunners Will Graham and Abbi Jacobson (who also starred) comes as Hollywood’s first dual strikes since the 1960s has brought production to a standstill. Graham and Jacobson fought to get the series a second season as Amazon and producers Sony Pictures Television negotiated to...

Prime Video has canceled “The Peripheral,” despite the Chloë Grace Moretz-led sci-fi series receiving a renewal for a second season in February.
An individual with knowledge of the matter tells TheWrap that the cancelation stems from delays caused by the ongoing Writers’ Guild of America strike, which began on May 2, and SAG-AFTRA strike, which began on July 14. The individual noted that the series was originally intended to go into production this year for a release in 2024.
Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by William Gibson, the series hailed from “Westworld” creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan’s Kilter Films banner, who are under an overall deal at Amazon Studios. “The Peripheral” follows Flynne Fisher (Moretz), a woman trying to hold together the pieces of her broken family in a forgotten corner of tomorrow’s America. In its prime, Happy Days was responsible for a few spinoff series, from the inspired (Mork & Mindy) to the insipid (Joanie Loves Chachi). But the most popular was clearly Laverne & Shirley. After Cindy Williams and Penny Marshall made three appearances on Happy Days, the characters of Laverne DeFazio and Shirley Feeney were given their own show, which quickly rivaled Happy Days in popularity — in fact, during Laverne & Shirley’s third season, it actually surpassed Happy Days to become the #1 show of the season. Laverne & Shirley wound up airing for eight seasons, producing 178 episodes. We spoke to Williams many times over the years before her death this past January, and she told us the success of Laverne & Shirley came as a surprise to her and Marshall. When "The Simpsons" debuted on December 17, 1989, it was an instant sensation. Matt Groening's bizarre, weirdly proportioned yellow people felt like a dark antidote to the corny TV Americana that had persisted through Reagan's America, and the show's popularity proved that audiences were ready for a change. Plus, it was incredibly novel to have an animated sitcom in primetime, leading many curious souls to tune in ... and instantly become hooked. Many years later, celebrities would be fighting tooth-and-nail to gain a coveted guest spot on "The Simpsons," either playing themselves or playing a character.
A fun piece of trivia: the first celebrity to guest-star in an episode of "The Simpsons" was Albert Brooks (no relation to show producer James L.). Albert Brooks played a character named Cowboy Bob in the 1990 episode "The Call of the Simpsons." Cowboy Bob was very eager to sell an Rv to the status-seeking Simpson family.

Mark Wahlberg’s 1995 feature The Basketball Diaries is highly regarded as one of the actor’s best movies. But Wahlberg shared that it had a brief influence on others’ perception of him.

The Basketball Diaries was one of Wahlberg’s first breakout roles as a film star. He was making his transition over to Hollywood after his brief stint as hip hop artist Marky Mark. But his roles in The Basketball Diaries, and his subsequent film Fear, seemed to attach an unfavorable image to the actor.
“People were afraid of me after roles in Fear and Basketball Diaries,” Wahlberg once told Sun Journal.
In Basketball Diaries, Wahlberg played a young and mischievous troublemaker with a rebellious streak. In Fear, Wahlberg played the mysterious and intimidating boyfriend of co-star Reese Witherspoon.

Amazon Studios Television head Vernon Sanders suggested that the company would be open to continuing their “A League of Their Own” series, despite its recent decision to renew the show for an abbreviated four-episode second season.
“I’m one of those people that believes that if magic happens and we get a great response, this doesn’t necessarily have to be the end,” Sanders told TheWrap. “It will totally depend on how it performs and how the cast and creators all decide they want to revisit it if they do. So let’s hope we get that big audience.”
He emphasized that the studio “loved” the show and that the conversation about bringing it back was a “tough one.”

When I was a kid, I had the feeling I was undercover as a boy. I was on a little league baseball team called the Chesapeake Bagel Bakery Bagels, which means I was a Bagel, though I never felt like I deserved the name. I was certain that the other boys on the team were going to look at me and see that I was somehow different, that I was attracted to them and wanted to tear their circular-bread-emblazoned uniforms off, that I was a Danish in a Bagel uniform. I was terrible at being in the closet. When we played Truth or Dare, I would dare my friends to kiss me, and then intentionally laugh loudly to emphasize how hilarious and not at all sexy I found that idea.

This story about the production design of “A League of Their Own” first appeared in the Comedy Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Production designer Victoria Paul knows how much people love Penny Marshall’s “A League of Their Own”—a film that 31 years later, fans still relish quoting: “There’s no crying in baseball!” and “And how about Marla Hooch…what a hitter!” So when the production designer (who has worked on everything from “My Cousin Vinny” to “Breakdown” to “Bones”) was hired for Amazon Prime Video’s adaptation of the 1992 movie, she realized the best way forward was to take her cues from Marshall’s film. “We were all in awe of the movie,” Paul said. “It’s a classic, and we didn’t shy away from looking at how they did (their sets). We weren’t trying to disassociate ourselves from the movie at all.”

Stand-up comic. Talk show innovator. The View firebrand. Betty Rubble. There’s very little Rosie O’Donnell, 61, has left to accomplish in her singular career. From the moment she broke out of Long Island with a performance on Star Search in 1984, O’Donnell has proved a highly resilient, sometimes confrontational and always entertaining force. She’s also among the most fiercely outspoken advocates of LGBTQ+ causes in Hollywood. (She launched her own gay family cruise line, for heaven’s sake.) Then, as the country’s far right kicks up its attacks on queer people and their art forms, who better than O’Donnell, the original Donald Trump adversary and Broadway’s biggest cheerleader, to celebrate in The Hollywood Reporter‘s 2023 tribute to Pride?

Tom Hanks was not in the rom-com mood when Nora Ephron called him about “When Harry Met Sally.”
Hanks, who went on to collaborate with Ephron and Meg Ryan on beloved genre classics “You’ve Got Mail” and “Sleepless in Seattle,” apparently could not relate to the idea of Harry (who was eventually played by Billy Crystal) being depressed after his divorce.
“People probably don’t know this, but Tom was offered when ‘Harry Met Sally’ and he turned it down because he was going through a divorce and he was very happy to be not married,” Hanks’ current wife and fellow filmmaker Rita Wilson said during an appearance on iHeartPodcast’s “Table for Two With Bruce Bozzi.”
She continued, “And so he could not understand that a person going through a divorce would have anything other than just like, ‘I’m so happy.’ But I loved that script.”

Gary Kent, the iconic B-movie stunt performer, actor and director who worked with Peter Bogdanovich, Richard Rush and Monte Hellman and served as an inspiration for Brad Pitt’s character in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, has died. He was 89.
Kent died Thursday evening at an assisted care facility in Austin, his son Chris Kent told The Hollywood Reporter.
Kent suffered two of his most painful injuries as a stunt performer in Rush films. He sliced up his arm on broken glass during a barfight fracas in Hells Angels on Wheels (1967) and was run over by an out-of-control motorcycle in The Savage Seven (1968), where he shared scenes with Penny Marshall.

George Lucas' "Star Wars" (which eventually acquired the subtitle "Episode IV — A New Hope") transformed cinema in a myriad of ways when it blasted onto movie screens in the summer of 1977. The richly imagined tale of a young Tatooine farm boy who becomes the unlikely hero of a galactic rebellion sent kids staggering out of theaters with grandiose dreams of saving the universe. A mere two years after the end of the Vietnam War, America was hungry for a return to the righteousness of World War II flicks and John Wayne Westerns. "Star Wars," along with "Jaws" and "Rocky," spun that beautiful, aspirational lie. These characters — particularly the trinity of the naive hero, the strong-willed princess, and the charming rogue — were who we wanted to be.

The recent TV adaptation of A League of Their Own has once again heightened awareness of Penny Marshall’s 1992 film, which featured Tom Hanks as Jimmy Dugan, the hard-luck manager of a women’s professional baseball team. It marked a change in direction for Hanks, who spent most of the 1980s making straightforward comedy films. A League of Their Own, however, gave him the opportunity to play a darker and more nuanced character, though the film still had comedic overtones. Speaking at the time of the movie’s release, Hanks told us why he was so excited to take on the Dugan character. Hulu’s snarky historical dramedy “The Great” is set to debut its third season on May 12, with all 10 episodes available for streaming at once. The show is loosely based on Russia’s Catherine the Great (played by Elle Fanning) and her husband Peter (Nicholas Hoult), who are now trying to make their marriage work — though Catherine’s progressive attitudes are often at odds with her reactionary country.

As has been rumored, there will be no second full season for “A League of Their Own,” the Abbi Jacobson and Will Graham-created series based on the 1992 Penny Marshall comedy, as per The Hollywood Reporter. After a good deal of negotiation between Sony Pictures Television and Amazon, however, fans will get some “extra innings”—a four-episode wrap-up.
The show is set in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, which was created in the thick of World War II. The series has recruited 95-year-old Maybelle Blair as a consultant, and she has been active in promoting the project.
The series stars Jacobson, D’Arcy Carden, Chante Adams, Melanie Field, and Kate Berlant and is pointedly more focused on issues like racism and homophobia than the wacky Tom Hanks-led picture from the 1990s. As such, it has gained a strong and sincere following, many of whom have taken to social media...
