Ask any actor of some worth. It is not easy to play a known living character. Audiences and the character that you are playing, plus their close associates, judge the performance with scrutinized harshness and normally find it wanting.
Not this time. Not Arun Gawli. Not Arjun Rampal who has shaped into one of Hindi cinema’s most dependable actors who does his roles with such smooth efficiency and such noiseless excellence that we are liable to miss the point.
Don’t make the mistake of confusing Arjun’s laidback wisdom in portraying the gangster-philanthropist-parliamentarian-convict Arun Gawle, as a Devganesque laziness. This is a power-packed implosive performance. Rampal plays Gawli as a time bomb waiting to explode. There are no extra toppings, fringe benefits, perks or bonuses to this performance.

After the blockbuster Chennai Express, it's an unofficial remake of Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi for superstar Shah Rukh Khan and superstar-director Rohit Shetty. The film, which goes on the floors in March, will star Shah Rukh Khan and Varun Dhawan as brothers. A source in the know reveals, "The basic plot is like Satyen Bose's Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi and also shades of Mukul Anand's Hum. Shah Rukh's role is a mix of Ashok Kumar in Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi and Bachchan Saab in Hum. Shah Rukh Khan plays the Ashok Kumar role of a seeming misogynist while Varun Dhawan playing the flirty sibling is just the opposite. Like Kishore Kumar in Chalti Ka Gaadi, Varun Dhawan has a love interest, Kriti Sanon (who steps into, ahem, Madhubala's role). Varun keeps teasing and challenging his brother about his lack of interest in women...until at mid-point...

Yash Chopra is looked upon as the grandfather of candyfloss romance, an antithesis to the more ‘artistic’ genre of films. One wonders why. Here’s what his early films were about:
Unwed mothers and illegitimate children – Dhool ka Phool (1959)
Partition and the rise of Hindu fundamentalism – Dharmputra (1961)
Taut, song less thriller about a fugitive, a lone woman and a corpse – Ittefaq (1969)
A man who lives with his wife and the ‘other woman’, Hindi Cinema’s first Ménage à trois- Daag (1973)
In 1981, we had another of his equally risqué works, Silsila. Expectedly, sparks flew when the Screen God of the time shared screen space with the reigning diva. Rekha and Amitabh were quite an item on screen and allegedly, off screen too. The grapevine has it that Chopra was inspired to make Silsila on this relationship...

Anurag Kashyap’s name (No Smoking, DevD) has become synonymous with new age Indian cinema, which pushes boundaries and offers an alternative to the mainstream commercial offerings from Bollywood which many have become accustomed to. Gangs of Wasseypur (Gow), fresh from its critical reception at Cannes Film Festival, is part one of a self-styled almost 6 hour epic mafia film, set in the hinterlands of northern India. The central concept of the film is revenge, coupled with the rise of warring clans. It is similar to the revenge Leonardo Dicaprio sought from Daniel Day Lewis in Scorsese’s Gangs of New York, or Amitabh Bachchan fought for in Mukul Anand’s Agneepath. In Gow this revenge is laid out very early in the film by a young Manoj Bajpai, in the name of his father’s death (also played by Manoj Bajpai) and will clearly culminate in part 2 of the film.

When you think of Bollywood music we are sure that the fabulous Vishal-Shekhar will be one of the names that comes immediately to your mind. Made up of Vishal Dadlani and Shekhar Ravjiani, they have been the maestros behind some of the biggest hits and best songs to come out of Indian movie music! With each new track for each new film, the duo really works hard to make fresh sounds, novel grooves and to give an innovative flavor to Indian cinema music! On many of the tracks we hear their vocals as well. If you have read any of my music reviews, you know that I always think Vishal’s vocals rock and that Shekhar is one of my favorite singers! I loved his smooth vocals on the acoustic ‘Bin Tere Reprise’ from I Hate Love Storys and his newest ‘Khudayaa’ from Shanghai also was added to my all time favorite song list.

Filmmaker Samir Karnik, known for his family dramas like Heroes, Yamla Pagla Deewana and just released Chaar Din Ki Chandni, is now set to direct Dus 2 and says he can.t make the action thriller without Sanjay Dutt..The star cast will be repeated as that of the old version. I can.t make Dus without Sanjay Dutt,. Karnik told us.It was reported that Deepika Padukone will replace Shilpa Shetty, who is right now pregnant with her first child in the Dus sequel. However Karnik rubbished the reports and said, .These all are rumours. We have not finalised on the star cast yet..The first movie Dus was launched in 1997, but was stalled after its director Mukul S. Anand died.In 2005, Nitin Manmohan, the producer of Dus, released another version of Dus in which Sanjay and Shilpa from the original cast were roped in and it was directed by Anubhav Sinha.

For those who enjoyed Anubhav Sinha's 2005 sleeper-hit, the global crime thriller Dus, there is news. Dus producer Nitin Manmohan has decided to make a sequel. However, Dus 2 won't be directed by Sinha, but by Samir Karnik instead. Apparently, producer Nitin Manmohan who has been on the look-out for an appropriate director to make the Dus sequel broached the subject with Karnik when they were shooting Yamla Pagla Deewana, the film that Nitin Manmohan produced and Karnik directed. Says a source, "Nitin wondered aloud now the Dus plot could be taken forward. Within five minute Karnik had a story idea." The fast-paced 2005 espionage thriller had starred Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bachchan, Suniel Shetty, Zayed Khan, Pankaj Kapoor and Shilpa Shetty. The sequel which begins shooting at year-end would have most of the original cast returning for an enthusiastic encore, barring obviously mother-to-be Shilpa Shetty who, we hear, will be replaced by Deepika Padukone,...

For film lovers who consider Bollywood cinema to be a blind spot in their cinephilia and wish to change that, there’s a curious entry from Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions that rolled out last week: a purported remake of their own 1990 production Agneepath. The curiosity, I think, arises from the tug-of-war between Dharma’s current reputation as makers of an “international” brand of Bollywood cinema targeted specifically at expatriates and nascent Indophiles and the highly indigenous, culturally and historically rooted nature of the movie they have chosen to remake. The result is exciting, to say almost nothing, and should serve as a good takeoff point for the adventurous.
A crucial detail about the original Agneepath, starring Amitabh Bachchan and directed by Mukul Anand: It’s insane. Made during the limbo between Amitabh Bachchan’s infamous career in politics and his equally unsuccessful foray into film production, the film...

New Delhi, Jan 24: Vijay Dinanath Chauhan is back! The character, made popular by megastar Amitabh Bachchan in 1990 film "Agneepath", is making a comeback on the big screen, albeit in a new avatar with Bollywood hearthrob Hrithik Roshan.
The 1990 film, directed by Mukul Anand, was produced by Karan Johar's father Yash. Though the film didn't work at the box-office, it won the best actor national award for Amitabh.
Twelve years later, Johar came up with the idea of remaking the film by setting it in the modern day scenario, with debutant Karan Malhotra taking the mammoth task of directing it.
Set in a small Indian village of Mandawa,.

Though Amitabh Bachchan starrer `Agneepath` did not catch the eye of the audience, the remake has already grabbed eyeballs. But actor Sanjay Dutt, who plays the dreaded villain in the latest version feels the original was much ahead of its time. The 1990 cult classic, directed by Mukul Anand, featured Big B as the iconic Vijay Dinanath Chauhan, Danny Denzongpa as Kancha Cheena, the baddie and Mithun Chakraborty as the lovable coconut seller Krishnan Iyer Ma. Despite a stellar cast `Agneepath` failed at the box office commercially but Bachchan`s performance was praised.Producer Yash Johar`s son, Karan has remade the film in the same name now starring Hrithik Roshan and Dutt. It has already created quite a buzz, unlike the original."I loved the film (original) and if I was the whole of audience, I would have made it a big hit. I think may be the film was too ahead of times.

In a week to follow, the Bollywood box- office is well slated for another outstanding release, the remade version of Mukul Anand’s action packed bonanza- ‘Agneepath’. While Hrithik will be stepping into the shoes of Big B as Vijay Dinath Chauhan; the villainous cast of Danny Denzongpa will be essayed by Sanjay Dutt. Giving way to obvious prospects of possible parallelisms and those of differences, it will be interesting to note the elements of closeness. To go by the creative unit as well as the actor, despite having a base of commonality, Hrithik as Vijay Dinanath Chauhan is supposed to be a far cry from Big B’s p...

Action films are usually about muscle power and stunts, but Karan Johar.s remake of Bollywood classic .Agneepath. provided many sequences for songs, according to National award-winning composer duo Ajay-Atul..Normally in action films, you don.t get many situations where you can add songs. If you see action films, where.s the scope for music? Even the original .Agneepath. had three or four songs,. Atul Gogavale told Ians on behalf of the duo..Our album has six songs, and we have tried to maintain a good variety with one intense Ganpati song, one qawwali, one romantic number, another song capturing the emotions of a brother and sister. We wanted to give this album our best because it is very special for us,. he added.Ajay-Atul entered the film industry in 2004. They primarily composed for Marathi films, and earned acclaim for their tunes in the 2009 film .Jogwa., for which they won a national award.

Karan Johar has joined the remake bandwagon with his forthcoming production Agneepath, a newer version of a 1990 film of the same name, which starred Amitabh Bachchan. Directed by Johar’s former assistant Karan Malhotra, this version Agneepath will star Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra, and Sanjay Dutt in main roles.
In an interview with Twf, Johar was hesitant to label Agneepath an adaptation. “Time and time again I have said this is not an adaptation, this is a tribute to him [Amitabh Bachchan], to Mukul Anand, and Yash Johar… We have made this Agneepath with a great amount of respect and reverence to them…,” said Johar.
The updated Agneepath does maintain some resemblance to its namesake. According to Johar, the basic plot is the same in terms of the fact that it revolves around revenge. But he also mentions that there are some notable differences from the original. “That’s why I am...
