I love Ozu and Kurosawa, Kobiyashi directed my favorite film of all time; Seppuku, but the few films I've seen of Mizoguchi have been sort of simply "oh, ok, well, that was nice."
Just tonight my lady & I went to see The Story of the Last Chrysanthemums and I almost fell asleep, it was like watching a Charlotte Bronte novel come to life, severely melodramatic and horribly acted.
Ugetsu is something I need to go back and watch again, same with Sansho.
I think maybe the fact that he was sort of a "feminist" is what puts me off; oh, the plight of women, the suffering of women because of the choices of men, boo hoo hoo. Meh, gimme Peckinpah instead.
