Today, May 30th, marks the 20th anniversary of the release of the backwoods slasher movie Wrong Turn, and to celebrate Entertainment Weekly has published an article that looks back at the making of the film, from the real-life moment that inspired Alan B. McElroy to write the screenplay (he and his wife were stuck in a winter traffic jam and decided to take a side road detour) through the hiring of Rob Schmidt to direct the film (he chose it over a Hellraiser sequel), the casting of the killers, and the tricks Stan Winston’s FX team did on the set. The article also gives a nod to the five sequels that followed – and to the 2021 reboot, which was also written by McElroy. While being interviewed, McElroy mentioned that he’s hoping to make two sequels to the reboot.

For movie nerds like yours truly who grew up in the late 90s and early 2000s on films like Gregg Araki’s The Doom Generation and Rob Schmidt’s Crime and Punishment in Suburbia, an outrageous horror comedy with nods to QAnon is an easy movie to love. Thankfully, Dutch Southern’s quirky Only the Good Survive rises the occasion. In the days before streaming, this SXSW premiere feels like one of those late-night movies about which word spread amongst kids around your high school lunch table.

Conservative network Newsmax has been dropped from DirecTV as of 11:50 p.m. Et on Tuesday.
DirecTV confirmed the decision, saying the network is no longer broadcast on DirecTV, DirecTV Stream or U-Verse, with the decision made due to Newsmax’s “demands for rate increases.”
“On multiple occasions, we made it clear to Newsmax that we wanted to continue to offer the network, but ultimately Newsmax’s demands for rate increases would have led to significantly higher costs that we would have to pass on to our broad customer base. Anyone, including our customers, can watch the network for free via NewsmaxTV.com, YouTube.com and on multiple streaming platforms like Amazon Fire TV, Roku and Google Play. We continually evaluate the most relevant programming to provide our customers and expect to fill this available channel with new content,” a DirecTV spokesperson said in a statement.

I never thought I would miss those inbred hillbilly freaks as much as I do right now…
Back in 2003, director Rob Schmidt and writer Alan B. McElroy dropped Wrong Turn on the world and took the “lost in the woods” horror drama to the next level. Introducing us to Three-Fingers, Saw-Tooth and One-Eye, West Virginia’s newest favorite family. Wrong Turn would also cement Eliza Dushku and Desmond Harrington as would be stars. I, honestly, bloody love that first movie and found it genuinely scary at the time, yeah it spawned about seven hundred and thirty three sequels that all pretty much sucked in comparison but they have remained a guilty pleasure in part due to my love of that original movie.

In 2003, writer Alan B. McElroy and director Rob Schmidt introduced an early aughts backwoods slasher that launched a six-film franchise. The setup was simple; a group of unwitting tourists or passersby fall prey to a clan of inbred cannibals. Nearly twenty years later, McElroy returns to the series he created to retool and reboot, giving Wrong Turn a wildly divergent […]...

Rob Schmidt’s Wrong Turn wasn’t exactly a huge hit when it arrived back in 2003, earning just $28 million on a budget of $12 million. Reviews, meanwhile, weren’t particularly enthusiastic, either, with a lot of critics feeling that it was a formulaic and uninspired slasher that didn’t really bring anything new to the genre. Still, somehow, despite all that, it went on to launch a multi-film franchise. One that will continue next month with a reboot titled Wrong Turn.
Over the years, the series has become a fixture of the VOD realm with sequels Dead End, Left for Dead, Bloody Beginnings, Bloodlines and Last Resort debuting between 2007 and 2014. All of them are low budget slashers that only helped further run the concept into the ground, but it seems distributor Saban Films has high hopes for this latest effort, as it’ll be hitting theaters for one night only on...

Rob Schmidt’s Wrong Turn was hardly a massive success at the box office back in 2003 after raking in $28 million on a budget of $12 million and reviews were far from enthusiastic, with many critics labeling it a formulaic and uninspired slasher that brought nothing new to a genre that had already been done to death a thousand times over, but it still went on to launch a multi-film franchise.
None of the following installments were even released in theaters, but Wrong Turn quickly became a fixture of the VOD realm with sequels Dead End, Left for Dead, Bloody Beginnings, Bloodlines and Last Resort arriving between 2007 and 2014. The second movie is the only one that was received enthusiastically, while the rest were standard low budget slashers that well and truly ran the concept into the ground.

Horror film franchise Wrong Turn is the latest property to get the reboot treatment.
A Wrong Turn reboot movie is in the works. – Whether or not moviegoers were clamoring for such a thing remains to be seen.
Regardless, Deadline reports that the Fox-distributed Wrong Turn slasher series is coming back to the forefront, thanks to original company Constantin Films, which has tapped franchise creator Alan B. McElroy to write a script that updates his original cannibal-killers-in-the-woods concept. This reinvented Wrong Turn movie will see Mike P. Nelson occupy the director’s chair.
Martin Moszkowicz will serve as executive producer joined by Constantin’s Robert Kulzer. As Kulzer lauds of the reboot effort:
“Alan’s re -interpretation of his own work and Mike’s vision are a frightening reflection of our world today: one person’s American dream is another’s worst nightmare.”

Back in 2005 an anthology series appeared on American television with the ingenious concept of bringing some of horror’s most celebrated directors together, along with a smattering of talented new blood, to produce hour long movies. Masters of Horror was the brainchild of Mick Garris, television’s go to guy for adaptations of Stephen King’s work (notably The Stand (1994), The Shining (1997) and 2011’s Bag of Bones) and ran for two well received seasons that featured some of the best recent work from genre giants John Carpenter (Halloween, Escape From New York), Dario Argento (Suspiria, Opera)and Tobe Hooper (Poltergeist, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre).

We've yet to see Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings arrive on these shores, but the franchise is already plowing ahead with more backwoods, mountain-man, cannibal shenanigans. Wrong Turn 5 is now underway, with erstwhile Pinhead Doug Bradley heading up the cast. The cheerfully gnarly series has been quietly bludgeoning away for almost a decade now. It began with Rob Schmidt's original Hills Have Eyes knock-off in 2003, boasting bloody FX work by the late, great Stan Winston, and surprising everyone by being quite good. Joe Lynch's Dtv sequel Dead End was also better than you might have imagined, and had Rollins in it.Since that point, the series has been adopted by Declan O'Brien (Sharktopus). He made little impression with his forgettable third instalment Left For Dead, but rallied with Bloody Beginnings, a fun prequel which took the action out of the woods and into an abandoned sanitarium, and...

Reservoir Dogs was the first independent film I ever saw, and I remember being completely blown away by it. I think I was around 15 years old when I watched the movie on VHS. I watched it over at a friend's house, and we couldn't believe what we were seeing. I loved this film, and to this day, I still enjoy watching it. The film was released in 1992, and it took movies to a new level. The movie was not only incredibly cool, but at the time it seemed to break the rules of conventional storytelling.

The new horror film "Bad Meat" from Revolver Entertainment has been reportedly fraught with production setbacks, including a shift from original director Rob Schmidt ("Wrong Turn") to total newcomer LuLu Jarmen to finish production. Yeah.
Horror movie websites have all posted the trailer, the synopsis, and some images. Some have even referenced the production problems. But no one has even bothered to ask, "Who is LuLu Jarmen?"
Because I'm obsessed with women horror directors (yes, literally obsessed) this is the first question on my mind. "Bad Meat" is her only IMDb credit; she isn't anywhere else on the Internet; no website, no Facebook page, no Twitter account, no bio on IMDb... nothing. So. It's probably just a pseudonym for director Rob Schmidt, because he's so embarrassed by how it turned out that he doesn't want to be blamed for it. The flesh-eating comedy horror flick, penned by Paul Gerstenberger, appears at the Afm '11 this week and stars Jessica Parker Kennedy ('In Time'), Elisabeth Harnois ('Miami Medical'), Dave Franco ('Scrubs') and Mark Pellegrino - who always manages to pop up in every one of my favourite TV shows including 'Dexter', 'Lost' and 'Supernatural'. The Canadian production was shot in Winnipeg and has in fact been floating around for quite some time now. You hardcore bastards out there may recall this being Rob Schmidt's ('Wrong Turn') baby at one point back in 2007/2008 but unfortunately the project ran into financial difficulty. But all's well that ends well and you can check out the three new stills below.

Years after locking down Wrong Turn's Rob Schmidt and falling into financial trouble, it appeared that Bad Meat was a doomed project. Quietly the film was completed under the direction of Lulu Jarmen and will world premiere this UK at the Film4 Frightfest Halloween All-Nighter this past October. From Jinga Films, the gore-fest will play at Afm this week in hopes of landing distribution. Hoping to garner attention, a pretty great sales trailer has been released featuring a whole lotta gore! "A Boot Camp for troubled teens becomes a nightmarish charnel house when spoiled meat transforms the staff from sadistic fascists into something much, much worse Get ready for spilt blood, vomit, faeces and bile and not only on screen - in the strangest, weirdest destined-for-cult-dom gross-out in ages." Elizabeth Harnois, Dave Franco, Mark Pellegrino, Tahj Mowry and Jessica Parker Kennedy all star.

Finally, a look at Bad Meat , the bloody horror film with a tumultuous history that was rescued and completed just in time to be presented at the American Film Market this week. A trailer is here and it's filled with plenty of gore, oddball humor and S&M maniacs running around killing off the cast. Elisabeth Harnois, Dave Franco, Mark Pelegrino, Tahj Mowry, Jessica Parker Kennedy, Joe Dinicol and Samantha Hill star. Lulu Jarmen is the credited director ( Wrong Turn 's Rob Schmidt began the project long ago). Ordered to a delinquent camp by their exasperated parents, a group of wayward teens fall foul of a deadly virus that infects the guards and turns them into flesh-eating monsters! Gristle and gore are on the menu-as are the kids in this Brat Camp slaughterhouse...

The indie pic' Bad Meat will be having its World Premiere at the American Film Market. This is a film developed by Rob Schmidt (Wrong Turn), but the director named on the title is Lulu Jarmen; this is likely a pseudoname. This title has recently completed while being developed way back in 2008. There have been some financial hurdles to scramble over and now, the first trailer is available for Bad Meat, along with a film poster.
In this clip, you will laugh, you will gag, and you will likely cry for your mommy, as several delinquent children are chased throughout a "Boot Camp." They are being chased by the camp counsellours who have eaten some rotten meat. This, strangely, turns them into killers. Unfortunately, these kids will have a long jog back to civilization as the camp is located in "the middle of nowhere." Enjoy the disturbing and surreal trailer below.

The name Declan O’Brien may not be that well known to genre fans, but we know his work. We’ve all either seen or heard about some of his films. Let’s admit it, we all kind of wish we’d been present at the Sharktopus production meetings, don’t we? Later he landed a pretty respectable gig directing the third Wrong Turn flick, following up horror faves Rob Schmidt and Joe Lynch.
Now, he’s set to unleash the latest entry in the inbred cannibal hillbilly franchise with Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings, hitting DVD and Blu-ray on October 25th. Be sure to check out the Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings Cannibal Cookbook on Facebook. Enjoy.

Win a DVD copy of Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings, out on October 25
Before their victims ever hit a “Dead End,” one family took terror to a gruesome new level. In 1974, Glenville Sanatorium was the site of a brutal and horrific crime, as three hideously deformed cannibals went on a merciless killing spree.
Now, years later, a group of college kids having the time of their life make a fateful wrong turn, giving this family of blood-thirsty cannibals new prey to stalk. The abandoned medical wards within the sanatorium soon become killing fields as the panicked victims come face to face with a chilling choice: fight back or die.
With bonus footage too graphic for theaters, including behind-the-scenes featurettes and commentary from director Declan O’Brien (Wrong Turn 3, Sharktopus), Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings takes audiences back to the most terrifying place of all… the beginning.

Earlier this month, Shock had learned that Bad Meat - a film formerly directed by Wrong Turn 's Rob Schmidt before funding was pulled from the production - found new life in the hands of filmmaker Lulu Jarmen. To further confirm that the film is complete, it was recently picked up by Film4FrightFest for a Halloween All-Nighter event on Saturday, October 28. We have the very first image to come out of the film, too. Elisabeth Harnois, Dave Franco, Mark Pelegrino, Tahj Mowry, Jessica Parker Kennedy, Joe Dinicol and Samantha Hill star. In the film, a group of so-called problem teens are sent by their parents to a repressive Boot Camp in the middle of nowhere, in the hope that the strict regime will transform them into youthful model citizens that their parents can be proud...

Maya Entertainment will be distributing Jason Daly's (Sigma Die!) Beware on DVD October 18th. This is a backwoods slasher, where a tortured young boy returns to life with an agenda. That agenda is to kill those who trespass in his barren neck of the woods. Maya Entertainment has just released the DVD artwork for this title (left), which shows one female character chained and bloodied. The tagline for this feature is "you've been warned," but is this film original?
The second trailer for the feature, which is hosted below, shows the killer, Shane, for the first time and a curious Sheriff. However, the film seems to be following some of the formulas of the cabin-in-the-woods style of filmmaking, based on the promotional material available. In this genre youths enter an isolated locale like Rob Schmidt's Wrong Turn (2003). Here, they drink and party e.g. House of Wax, before...

“We’ve got five more days, and we’ve switched to days and interiors so I can see the light,” Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings director Declan O’Brien told us of the production while on the set this past March 7, 2011, in the below-zero clime of then wintry Brandon, Canada. “We completed all of the exteriors already so it’s going to be a pleasure.”
Serving as a prequel to the 2003 Rob Schmidt-directed killer hillbilly flick that launched the franchise and written and directed by O’Brien (who returns to the franchise following his helming of Wrong Turn 3: Left For Dead), this fourth entry not only serves to document the events that created the series’ rural cannibals but also presents the modern story of a group of wayward skiers who find themselves seeking refuge in an abandoned insane asylum during a blizzard.

2008 was not a good year for Rob Schmidt ( Wrong Turn ) or his film Bad Meat , starring Elisabeth Harnois, Dave Franco, Mark Pelegrino, Tahj Mowry, Jessica Parker Kennedy, Joe Dinicol and Samantha Hill. You see, the company backing the film financially shut down and shooting came to a halt. An estimated 2/3 of the project was said to have been in the can. Since then, Schmidt has apparently pulled the film from his IMDb page and so has screenwriter Paul Gerstenberger and many others. But we stumbled over some news that may indicate the film was completed. Jinga Films is selling the project at the American Film Market in November. The company's listing says the film is now completed and directed by "Lulu Jarmen." Of course, there is no record of a Lulu Jarmen on...

A ten year old girl is found brutally murdered outside the small blue-collar city of Rochester, New York, and obsessed police detective Megan Paige (Eliza Dushku of Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Dollhouse) suffers a mental breakdown while trying to solve the crime. But when the child-killings resume two years later, Megans return to the investigation also brings back her own horrific hallucinations. Even if she can prove a double initial connection to the slayings, will she hang onto her sanity long enough to catch a psychopath? Cary Elwes (Saw), Michael Ironside (Starship Troopers), Bill Moseley (The Devils Rejects), Carl Lumbly (Alias) and Academy Award® winner Timothy Hutton co-star in this chilling thriller directed by Rob Schmidt and based on the true story of the murders that shocked America.

Fox and director Declan O’Brien are bringing those pesky cannibal mutants back this October to video in Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings. The film, obviously with the subtitle, is a prequel to the Rob Schmidt-directed 2003 film that Stan Winston served as a producer and starred the gorgeous Eliza Dushku.
At an isolated hospital deep in the West Virginia wilderness, three hideously deformed mutants go on a merciless killing spree. Now, decades later, this family of blood-thirsty cannibals is stalking new prey: a group of young skiers trapped by a blizzard. The abandoned medical wards soon become killing fields as the panicked victims come face to face with a chilling choice: fight back or die. The official trailer for the fourth entry in the Wrong Turn franchise, Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings, has just found its way online, and we have it right here for your carnage-starved peepers.
As we've mentioned previously, Wrong Turn 4 serves as a bit of a prequel to the 2003 Rob Schmidt-directed killer hillbilly flick that launched the franchise and was written and directed by Declan O’Brien (who returns to the series following his helming of Wrong Turn 3: Left For Dead). It follows a group of friends that decide to go snowmobiling during their winter break. They make a "wrong turn", getting lost in a storm, and seek shelter in an abandoned sanatorium. They are completely isolated by the storm and are thankful they can get out of the elements. But the sanatorium has a troubled past, and some of its former patients still reside there and are not happy about the intrusion.

Update: And here's a new poster. Try not to lose your heads with excitement...It's entirely possible that you're unaware that Rob Schmidt's punchy 2003 Hills Have Eyes knock-off Wrong Turn became a franchise. If so, the just-released, very much not-safe-for-work trailer for Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings provides a handy recap on what you've been missing.Wrong Turn's original cannibal slasher shenanigans starred Eliza Dushku and Desmond Harrington, and hauled itself into the realms of quality entertainment by boasting bloody FX work by the great Stan Winston and his team. Dtv sequel Dead End is also surprisingly not-bad, and has Rollins in it.Sadly though, threequel Left For Dead was as witless as you might imagine, so it bodes ill that part four, Bloody Beginnings, comes from the same creative team. As you might infer from the subtitle, this instalment has gone the prequel route in the belief...

Chicago – I am an unabashed junkie of anthology horror shows and will gladly debate with you why “The Twilight Zone” is the best show of all time before we get to discussing “The Outer Limits,” “Amazing Stories,” and “Tales From the Crypt.” Naturally, I was a big fan of Showtime’s “Masters of Horror” and was intrigued when a lot of that series’ major players jumped to NBC for “Fear Itself”. The show was a ratings failure and got very little buzz and the first season DVD makes it clear why. Even for an anthology show fan, this is a tough sell.
DVD Rating: 2.0/5.0 “Fear Itself” features thirteen episodes that aired on NBC during the summer of 2008. Like “Masters of Horror” (both shows were produced by the legendary Mick Garris), each episode was directed by a different horror writer and director. Working title: “Wrong Turn: With Apologies to the State of West Virginia”
“Killer hicks in the backwoods” as a film premise has been done before. What differentiates Wrong Turn from the rest is that it failed to do it well. It failed to do anything well. Put out a low-budget horror flick starring a sex symbol like Eliza Dushku wandering about in the forest and you’ll make back your production costs off of horny teenage boys alone. Wait for it to hit DVD and you’ll know for certain that you’ve got a franchise on your hands. It’s an unfortunate trend of Hollywood which benefits films like Wrong Turn and the talentless mooks who put them together. So unless you can prove you purchased this Blu-ray for the extra features alone, you’re guilty of perpetuating that cycle yourself. Shame on you.

Chicago – Start planning your Halloween marathon now. Last week, we highlighted the Universal wave of titles that included greats like “Shaun of the Dead” and “Army of Darkness” and we’re back with another wave of modern horror classics, including Oscar winners “Silence of the Lambs” and “Misery”.
The Blu-Ray Round-Up, HollywoodChicago.com’s regular column that highlights synopsis, tech details, and special features for titles that might otherwise fall through your Blu-Ray buying cracks, doesn’t usually play favorites, but every good horror fan should have “Manhunter,” “Silence,” “Child’s Play,” and “Misery” in their collection. Whether or not you need to own the “Wrong Turn” films is something only you can decide.
All five titles were released last week, September 15th, 2009. Both “Child’s Play” and “Misery” are presented in a Bd/DVD combo pack with both HD and standard versions of the film.
