The Academy has announced the five winners of the 2023 Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting who each win a $35,000 prize and mentorship from an Academy member throughout their fellowship year.
The recipients will also be featured at the Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting Awards and Live Read on April 25 at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater (pictured), where an ensemble of actors will read selected scenes from the 2023 winning scripts.

The MCU made Oscar history this year as Angela Bassett earned the franchise its first-ever acting nomination for her supporting turn as Queen Ramonda in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” This was the sequel to “Black Panther,” which was the first film in the franchise to reap a Best Picture bid.

Who’d have thought the 26th annual Art Directors Guild Awards would be such a good party?
Community alum and host Yvette Nicole Brown kicked things off with great energy and a few genuinely funny jokes. There followed two genuinely engaging acceptance speeches from Ethan Tobman and François Audouy and then a genuinely emotional — and funny — introduction from Kevin Costner for his longtime collaborator, production designer Ida Ransom, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award.
“I’m so impressed how many production designers are not freaked out by talking up here,” said a visibly nervous Costner. “It’s freaking me out.”
The guild also awarded Lifetime Achievement Awards to Donna Cline, Anne Harris and Denise & Michael Okuda.
Oscar-nominated Dune director Denis Villeneuve received the William Cameron Menzies Award, for which he credited all the production designers he has worked with, especially frequent collaborator Patrice Vermette. Vermette, it turns out, won the gong for Fantasy Feature Film.

From dragon scales to the five elements of Chinese philosophy, production designer Sue Chan worked to incorporate numerous element into the set details of Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.”
From ancient worlds to San Francisco and a magical village protected by dragons, Chan and her team were faced with the mammoth task of striking a variety of moods as Simu Liu’s Shang Chi and the audience travel through these scenes.
A monotone palette was used for Wenwu’s (Tony Leung) world, forboding and devoid of art. The village was filled with saturated greens and nature, and Chan wove in red and gold, “which in Chinese culture are ubiquitous.”

In the recent feature “Shirley,” Elisabeth Moss plays novelist Shirley Jackson, who is hard at work on her second novel, “Hangsaman.”
She has thrown herself into writing the story, based on the disappearance of a young woman Paula Jean Welden from Bennington College, where her husband teaches. Jackson spends her days and nights working on the novel from home, and her home soon becomes a reflection of the inner workings of her mind.
Production designer Sue Chan worked with director Josephine Decker to bring the clutter of Jackson’s mind to life.
“Having Sarah Gubbins’ script and Josephine Decker’s imagination as the foundation for my work was an embarrassment of riches,” Chan says. “These, coupled with Shirley Jackson’s writing, gave the art department a lot of conceptual ideas to play with. The canvas of the house was a great beginning, and it was a lot of fun channeling Shirley from this foundation.

Sundance Film Festival juries often hand out special prizes to recognize work that doesn’t win one of the two prescribed awards (Grand Jury Prize and Jury Prize for Directing) in each of the competition categories. This year, Sundance found some… well, let’s say, unusual ways to celebrate some tremendous films.
There was the head-scratcher of Eliza Hittman’s “Never Rarely Sometimes Always” winning the “U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Neorealism,” and Josephine Decker’s “Shirley,” competing in the same category, winning the “Award for Auteur Filmmaking.”

Cornerstone Films has boarded director Josephine Decker’s (Madeline’s Madeline) psychological drama Shirley starring Elisabeth Moss as famed horror author Shirley Jackson with Michael Stuhlbarg (Call Me By Your Name) as her Bennington College professor husband Stanley Hyman.
Logan Lerman (Indignation) and Odessa Young (Assassination Nation) play the young couple that move in with Shirley and Stanley in the hope of starting a new life but instead find themselves fodder for a psycho-drama that inspires Shirley’s next novel. Above is a first look image.
