AMC Networks announced today that the four-part Australian rural noir crime drama Scrublands will premiere on Thursday, May 2, on Sundance Now and AMC+, with additional episodes dropping weekly on both platforms.
Based on Chris Hammer’s award-winning and bestselling crime novel by the same name, the captivating series follows a country town grappling with the aftermath of a horrible crime, still trying to come to terms with it a year on.
In an isolated and struggling country town, a charismatic and dedicated priest, Father Byron Swift, calmly opens fire on his congregation, killing five parishioners. One year later, investigative journalist Martin Scarsden arrives in Riversend to write what should be a simple feature story on the anniversary of the tragedy.
But when Martin’s instincts kick in, and he digs beneath the surface, the previously accepted narrative begins to fall apart, and he finds himself in a life-and-death race to uncover the truth.

After years of development, “BioShock”, the 2007 first-person shooter video game is being prepped as a new live-action movie, to be directed by Francis Lawrence, for streaming on Netflix:
“…incorporating ideas by 20th century dystopian and utopian thinkers Ayn Rand, George Orwell, and Aldous Huxley, as well as historical figures John D. Rockefeller and Walt Disney, the game sees the player guide ‘Jack’, after his airplane crashes in the ocean near the ‘bathysphere terminus’ that leads to the underwater city of ‘Rapture’.
“Built by the business magnate ‘Andrew Ryan’, the city was intended to be an isolated utopia, but the discovery of ‘Adam’, a genetic material which can be used to grant superhuman powers, initiated the city's turbulent decline.
“Jack tries to find a way to escape, fighting through hordes of Adam-obsessed enemies, and the iconic, deadly ‘Big Daddies’, while engaging with the few sane humans that remain and eventually learning of Rapture's past.

Cjz MD Nick Murray and CEO Matt Campbell’s observations on the shortage of top-class TV writers in light of the continuing talent drain overseas have triggered a lively industry debate.
“For a network and a production house it is the greatest struggle to find writers in this country at the moment as they get sucked up into the Us and UK,” Campbell told If. “Everyone is after the same people. We are having to look far and wide for writers.”
There is general agreement that it is tough for emerging writers to get enough screen credits to establish themselves. While the ABC and some production companies are mentoring writers there are no ready solutions.
Some creatives say there are plenty of skilled writers but networks and producers are often reluctant to back new talent.

Warning: The following contains major thematic spoilers for a movie nobody has seen.
It hadn’t been 2 weeks since its release when Brad Bird’s new film Tomorrowland had been dubbed a “failure” by the very studio that released it. In those two weeks the film was beaten at the box office by the sequel to a movie where glee club girls slid around in vomit, was projected unable to make back its reported 190 million dollar budget and became Disney’s convenient scapegoat for scrapping production on “Tron 3” – which caused internet trolls to take a break from complaining about Tron: Legacy and the abundance of sequels and remakes to complain that they won’t get to see “Tron 3”.
As with all news that goes viral, the reaction was swift and disproportionate, allowing box office performance to tarnish the film’s image and shut down discussion of the movie itself. A...

Subscription video-on-demand service Stan expects to announce at least two more development deals with Australian producers in the next couple of months.
The platform co-owned by Nine Entertainment Co (NEC) and Fairfax Media sees Australian original content as a key point of differentiation with competitors Presto Movies/Presto TV and with Netflix, which is due to launch in Australia/New Zealand on March 28.
The number of Aussie projects it will commission will depend partly on its ability to raise finance from other sources including international broadcasters or co-producers.
.We have a fixed amount to spend so the key will be to find overseas partners for co-funding at an early stage,. Nick Forward, Stan.s director of content and product, tells If.
.That may mean more reliance on international cast or co-commissions with subscription VoD and premium cable players who make a lot of this sort of content..

Artist Kasra Farahani has released some truly stunning concept art for the BioShock movie that never was, after the video game adaptation was canned at Universal Studios following budget problems.
The artwork, which you can feast your eyes on in the gallery below, depicts a wonderful and wholly on-point visualization of Rapture, along with the Little Sisters and towering, mechanized Big Daddies. Alas, this isn’t the first time that we’ve been exposed to concept art from the cancelled film, after artist Jim Martin took to his own website to post his personal rendition of life under the sea.
Sadly, it looks almost certain that we’ll never see either vision make its way to the silver screen, given how quickly the brakes were hit at Universal. At one point, the studio had Pirates of the Caribbean helmer Gore Verbinski on board to direct, though he soon left after...

As science fiction has popularly shown, the best dystopias always began as utopias. The idea of a fallen utopia is something that humanity seems to take an inherent comfort in. Much like our unflappable interest in seeing our heroes and idols fall fall from grace, a destroyed wonderland, or one that hides a myriad of horrors beneath its carefully constructed facade, is a reassuring proposition, one that works to assuage any guilt we might have for not trying to be better, or affecting any real change in our own society or circumstances.
The dystopia promises that whatever change your good intentions might bring, however nobly they began, could easily be twisted and crushed by your followers, your society, or even yourself.

My review for Burial At Sea – Episode 1, while positive, lamented the fact that Irrational Games chose to expound upon the idea of parallel universes for their Dlc, a decision that I now understand and, surprisingly, support after playing the second episode. One reason for this is that the latest chapter is simply better than the first in that it offers a stronger story, enhanced gameplay and even manages to tie the series as a whole together. Even though some of the individual pieces don’t come together perfectly, BioShock Infinite: Burial At Sea – Episode 2 wraps up the series in a way that fans need to experience.
The story picks up directly after Episode 1′s ending, with Sally falling into Atlas’ hands and Elizabeth desperate to get her back. To ensure Sally’s safety, Elizabeth agrees to return the department store prison that houses Atlas and his men back to Rapture...

The story of Elizabeth, Booker and the rest of the BioShock Infinite cast concludes today with the release of BioShock Infinite: Burial At Sea – Episode Two. To celebrate, 2K Games has released a new trailer for the storyline Dlc that gives us a glimpse at what lies ahead.
Taking place directly following the events of the first Burial At Sea episode, this outing places gamers into Elizabeth’s shoes for the first time. Without Booker’s combat expertise to back her up, Elizabeth must rely on stealth and cunning in order to navigate through Rapture and find Sally, the Little Sister she is desperately looking for. Along the way, she will find herself having to deal with the likes of Atlas and Andrew Ryan in order to finish her mission.
BioShock Infinite: Burial At Sea – Episode Two is the third and final piece of content that will be released for the title.

2K Games has announced that the first episode of BioShock Infinite: Burial At Sea will be available on November 12th. The Dlc will carry a price tag of $14.99 and will launch simultaneously on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.
In Burial At Sea, you will return to the world of Rapture that was brought so vividly to life in the first two BioShock games. Bearing a strong resemblance to classic “film-noir” tales, protagonist Booker DeWitt will explore the undersea dystopia on the eve of its downfall, which takes place one year before the original BioShock began. Further plot details have not been disclosed, but like all noir films, it will probably be a good, hard-boiled mystery.
In the Dlc you can expect to run into not only your companion from BioShock Infinite, Elizabeth, but some “old friends” from previous games as well. One would expect some of these friends to include the likes of Andrew Ryan,...

This holiday season, Irrational Games will take BioShock Infinite players back to Rapture, Andrew Ryan’s underwater dystopia. That will be done via the release of Burial at Sea – Episode 1, the game’s first major downloadable add-on, and the first part of a two-tiered alternate reality-based storyline.
Showcasing a different side of Rapture, Burial at Sea looks to expand upon BioShock Infinite in new and exciting ways. We’ve yet to play it, but everything we’ve seen and heard has piqued our collective interest. In fact, it won’t surprise us if the new campaign ends up being one of the best downloadable content packs of this console generation.
Featured below for your perusal is a preview of sorts. That is, the first five minutes of the add-on, which, expectedly, contains spoilers. You’ve been warned, my friends.
Check it out and let us know what you think in the comments.

The BioShock series has long been recognized in the gaming world as an immersive experience, complete with its own history and mythology, interesting storylines and a bevy of moral decision-making. Now the series is adding to this legacy with two new Dlc packs, entitled BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea.
Burial at Sea follows Booker DeWitt and Elizabeth, the central protagonists from BioShock Infinite, and features a return to the underwater city of Rapture before the events of its civil war. What’s more, players will get to explore the metropolis in its idyllic heyday, before Andrew Ryan’s creation takes a turn for the worse and the Adam-fuelled Splicers bring about its downfall. Not only that, its been confirmed that the unforgiving 1999 mode from Infinite will be available for BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea upon launch, too.
The expansion itself is said to be “narrative-driven” and will tie Booker and Elizabeth’s stories together.

Clare pulled off a fantastic performance to retain their Munster title in a thrilling Munster U21 Hurling Final at Semple Stadium on Wednesday evening.
There was large turnout at Thurles, due in part to the fine weather, and the gathered crowd saw an imperious Clare barrel to victory over their near neighbours and rivals Tipperary.
Jason Forde put in an exhibition of free-taking to keep the Premier County in touch, but they were no match for the Bannerman in truth. Late goals from star man Forde, including a bullet of a penalty, reduced the final deficit, but Clare never looked in danger of losing at any stage, and with a host of players from the senior panel in their ranks, they closed out the game in some style.

Before a game reaches the development stage, months if not years of planning must occur to lay the foundation of plot, design, style and to incorporate the mechanics. Many games have received overhauls mid-production, leading to drastic changes in the gameplay, but one aspect that seems to remain a constant from the start is one simple idea: How congruous to reality do we want this game to adhere?
Reality can simply take the form of the appearance of the game – although sci-fi themed, the Metal Gear series has remained visually “real” with dark landscapes, cumbersome armor and overall tone, whereas Assassin’s Creed uses the backdrop of actual Real history to overlay it’s characters and story. Reality in gaming does not necessarily have to mean obeying the laws of physics, but usually works with a manipulation of a system of morals or ideals. A game’s age rating is...

Here is the review of BioShock Infinite that I wrote for this week’s print edition of Entertainment Weekly:
The original BioShock is a definite contender for the Greatest Games of All Time list. The 2007 undersea dystopian adventure could have been just one of the niftiest first-person shooters ever. But creator Ken Levine infused the game with a surprising amount of intellectual depth. (How many games do you know that deconstruct Ayn Rand?)

I am sure there are a great many of you that have played Bioshock. I am sure that number is nearly identical to how many of you really enjoyed it. That is what you get from the “Highest rated first person shooter of all time”. The original was set in one of the most intoxicating gaming worlds ever put to coding, ripe with socio-political observations that most games wouldn’t even aim for on top of being an incredibly solid shooter.
The game industry has been waiting with baited breath to see what would come from Irrational Games and the game’s creative director, Ken Levine, for the past five and a half years. The first game of course had a sequel in Bioshock 2, and while the game was decent, it lacked the impact of the first (Not entirely 2k Marin’s fault, we just knew what we were getting). When I came to Bioshock, I knew that it was mentioned in discussions of ‘steampunk’ or ‘diselpunk’ narratives, but not much else. Then my girlfriend gave me her old Xbox along with a copy of the game she’d inherited. I tried it and was captivated with it. This and the sequel are among the few games I have stuck with playing till the end. And yes I have advance ordered Bioshock infinite as well.
Be warned, there will be spoilers in this article.
Bioshock began out of a desire for a more sandbox environment then the previous System Shock games. The plot went through many changes before they settled on Rapture as the location, the original character being conceived as a cult deprogrammer. The game moved from a role-play title to a first-person shooter. The time that the game spent in development helped it become as different and acclaimed as it was.
Be warned, there will be spoilers in this article.

The plot went through many changes before they settled on Rapture as the location, the original character being conceived as a cult deprogrammer. The game moved from a role-play title to a first-person shooter. The time that the game spent in development helped it become as different and acclaimed as it was.

All-time classic, System Shock 2, is set to be re-released very soon…
According to Flesh Eating Zipper, one of the PC’s greatest classics, System Shock 2, may be re-released very soon via gog.com by developer, Night Dive Studios, and it’ll work on modern PC’s. It may also appear on Steam in time, too.
System Shock 2 was developed by the now defunct Looking Glass Studios as well as Irrational Games, which obviously went on to develop spiritual successor, BioShock. However, long before Andrew Ryan’s underwater city of Rapture was committed to paper, System Shock, and the highly regarded sequel, System Shock 2, took players into a cyberpunk future, and pitted them against a tyrannical AI called Shodan.
The gameplay was very similar to BioShock, but was a little more complex, with more in-depth RPG mechanics, character development and a wider range of weapons and abilities.

You've seen our wish lists for the movie buffs in your life, and now the team is back to talk about some of the video game related gifts they'd love to see sitting under their tree. While it's our own personal choices, some of these may help you pick out the perfect gift for the gamer in your life.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence Limited Edition
It's my favorite video game franchise ever, and this one was cool. You get the game and special stuff for it, but the limited edition came with all the cut scenes pieced together to make a 1 1/2 hour movie! Any Mgs fan knows that the series has great cutscenes and awesome stories, so this is friggin cool! It's hard to find, so the cheapest I've found was 100 dollars. Back then "limited edition" literally meant Limited Edition, unlike today.

As a fan of both of these franchises I absolutely love what Andrew Ryan did with his "Dragon Effect" piece. He updated their looks and weapons yet maintained the soul of both games. Andrew has been working on this piece for a good minute, and you can see closer hi res looks at the various pieces on his Deviant Art page.
As for the art itself, it's gorgeous -- lots of small details in the armor as well as the faces, and I love the coloring here too, including the vibrant glow effects used on the various powers and weapons throughout. Really well done, and am I the only one who would love to see this used in a game someday? Might be a cool little side Dlc one day. A little Bioware version of Quantum Leap. Who knows, but if you like what you see here make sure to...

Taking place before the events of the first Bioshock game, the following Bioshock short film, titled New Year’s End, is a fantastic fan-made effort that takes us to that fateful News Year Eve in 1958.
Preceding the events of BioShock 1 and 2, this short gives a look at a very significant event in Rapture’s history. In the lowest parts of the city, a small group of splicers have something planned that will change the course of Andrew Ryan’s vision of utopia.

Written and Directed by: Stuart Beattie
Starring: Caitlin Stasey, Rachel Hurd-Wood, Lincoln Lewis, Phoebe Tonkin and Deniz Akdeniz
Based on the first of a series of young adult novels by John Marsden, Tomorrow When the War Began is a character-driven survival drama similar in premise to the ’84 film Red Dawn. While comparisons to that teen hit are inevitable, the two narratives are ultimately very different, both tonally and thematically. Tomorrow emphasizes character and group dynamics while relegating the military threat (the Soviet Union in Red Dawn) to an ambiguous Asian collective left mostly unseen. If Red Dawn wanted to be a crowd-pleasing comic book action film, Tomorrow When the War Began certainly has a different set of priorities.
In the small Australian port town of Wirrawee, seven teenagers decide to go camping for the weekend. Ellie (a captivating Caitlin Stasey), her best friend Corrie (Rachel Hurd-Wood) and Corrie’s boyfriend...

Bioshock lovers will have to wait a few more months to dive head-first into Irrational Games’ Bioshock Infinite.
Only a few months after Irrational stated that Bioshock Infinite would hit shelves this Fall, Creative Director Ken Levine has updated fans that the game will now be pushed back to February 26, 2013. Levine cited that the development team wanted to let fans know sooner than later that the game would be delayed so that an even better game could be developed.
“We’ve come to realize that some specific tweaks and improvements will make Infinite into something even more extraordinary. Therefore, to give our talented team the time they need, we’ve decided to move the game’s release to February 26, 2013. We wanted to let our loyal (and very patient!) fans know this as soon as possible.”

Say goodbye to the beautiful October release date for Bioshock Infinite. Ken Levine recently announced that in order to provide the talented and hard working team with more time to perfect the game, they will be delaying the title until February 26, 2013.
Levine touches on the fact that Bioshock Infinite is going to be a huge title. The original Bioshock broke boundaries of what a first-person shooter can be. Just as the original shattered our realities of first person shooters they are continuing the cycle of evolution. Levine and his team are changing up the Fps formula with Infinite, and a delay is something they felt needed to happen. Our first visit to Rapture was also delayed for several months, and look how that game turned out. (Hint: Awesome)
By now you are probably grabbing your replica Eve hypo and attempting to use hypnosis on the Bioshock team to alter their choices.

That October 16th release date? Ain't happening. Irrational and 2K Games have announced that we'll simply have to wait a few more months to check out the floating, dystopic city of Columbia as Bioshock Infinite slips into next year. In a letter to consumers (you can read it after the jump), the game's Creative Director, Ken Levine explained that this was a simple push to polish what he describes as a "very big game."
So shooter season got a little less crowded this year. Hopefully, we'll see/hear more about throughout the year.
Here's the official message from Ken Levine, Creative Director for Bioshock Infinite:
When we announced the release date of BioShock Infinite in March, we felt pretty good about the timing.

It doesn't look like we're going to see a live-action film adaptation of the video game Bioshock anytime soon, as its director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo recently revealed that he's no longer attached to the project. But today we bring you a pretty awesome original fan-made film worth checking out.

In the lowest parts of the city, a small group of splicers have something planned that will change the course of Andrew Ryan's vision of utopia. Potter says: "'BioShock' is one of those rare pieces of entertainment that stays with you. The story, the characters, the world created by the team at 2K and Irrational left an impression on me unlike any game I.ve ever played. I was drawn immediately into the idea of making a fanfilm. Not a parody, not a fake trailer mashup of other people's work, but a truly original creation set within the world of the games. I wanted to go there. But it doesn't end there, folks. Everyday people are doing things that seem closer and closer to the underwater utopia built by Andrew Ryan, lovingly dubbed Rapture.

Mongrel’s Creed Short Film. Tom Noakes‘ Mongrel’s Creed (2009) short film stars William Zappa, Anthony Phelan, Andy Ryan, Anthony Samson, and Stuart Rawe. In BioShock, Andrew Ryan had a dream: "No Gods or Kings. Only Man." And from this dream, the underwater city of Rapture was born. A place where people could escape the grasps of government and social guidelines. A place where people could become whoever it is they most wanted to be. You see, in Rapture, a thing called "plasmids" exist, and these plasmids can rewrite your genetic code to give you abilities beyond your wildest dreams. It all sounded too good to be true, and, unfortunately, it ultimately was.
But that's just science fiction. We live in reality, of course.
Researchers at Cambridge University have successfully taken a nematode worm, and expanded its genetic code. In a living organism, there is 20 amino acids which are assembled in various combinations to make thousands and thousands of proteins. The buzz is heating up for The X Factor, and Simon Cowell took part in another Q & A to explore the show. Despite the fact that the premiere of the show is quite a ways away, the audition circuit is in full swing, and since a lot of people are doing a lot of not so positive talking about Idol, attention is turning to the future.
Check it out below, and then find several teaser clips at the bottom.

S. Cowell Well, the idea was that we could only go into so many cities to do the open auditions. When we spoke to Fox and we spoke to Pepsi, they wanted to get a further reach and these booths came to my attention about—just under a year ago.

The indie web series scene in Australia continues to grow with local comedy The Future Machine. This week the show launches the final episode of its 8-episode first season. It stars comedian Matt Okine, Cariba Heine (H20: Just Add Water) and Andy Ryan (Tomorrow When The War Began) as roommates who build a time machine in their kitchen to resolve an argument. David Barker, Tom Sheldrick and Matt Okine (director, writer and star respectively) co-created The Future Machine and cleverly designed a concept that's expansive in its scope (it's about time travel), yet limited to a single filming location - an apartment. While many web series have been filmed in filmmakers' apartments due to low budgets, this series pulls out all the stops in terms of delivering a robust and high quality level of production. Director of Photography Nino Tamburri chose to shoot the series on the Canon 5D...

Star of the recent blockbuster Tomorrow, When The War Began, Andy Ryan, was approached by his pal Matt Okine with a favour. "Matt rang me up and asked ‘if I would like to do this little thing next week,'" the actor recalls. "As it turns out that ‘little thing' was five long 12 hour days, but I have never had so much fun in my life!" This "little thing" was The Future Machine, a made-for-web series created by director David Barker, comedian Matt Okine and Tropfest finalist Tom Sheldrick. The digital series - containing eight episodes each four minutes in duration - are released online over a month.
