On January 26, 2023, Hulu began streaming “The 1619 Project,” a six-part docuseries that expands upon Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones‘ piece in The New York Times Magazine. The series seeks to reframe our country’s history by placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of Black Americans at the very center of our national narrative.
Critics have heaped praise on the series, resulting in a 100 freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The series, hosted by Hannah-Jones, is a Lionsgate Production in association with One Story Up Productions, Harpo Films and The New York Times. It was executive produced by Hannah-Jones, Roger Ross Williams, Caitlin Roper, Kathleen Lingo and Oprah Winfrey. The episodes focus on “Democracy,” “Race,” “Music,” “Capitalism,” “Fear,” and “Justice.” Read our review roundup below.

"We did it to show our support," a neighbor across the street, who refused to give her name, tells People. Stephen Robinson, a former...

Fashion designer John Galliano was convicted in Paris Thursday of hate crimes after making anti-Semitic and racist remarks on two separate occasions. The court imposed a suspended fine of 6,000 euros ($8,500) this afternoon. The former Dior designer was also ordered to pay a symbolic one euro fine to one of the plaintiffs in the case. Galliano was not in court to hear the ruling. Speaking to reporters outside the courtroom, his attorney Aurélien Hamelle called it a "wise decision" and added that his client was now "very relieved." The 6,000 euro fine is suspended on a conditional term, according to legal sources,...

Insiders weigh in on what led to Galliano’s arrest and anti-Semitic outburst that ultimately led to him being fired by Dior. New reports say the designer could be headed to jail.
Everyone, including Oscar-Winning actress Natalie Portman, was shocked when a video of designer John Galliano on an anti-Semitic rant surfaced on Monday. Insiders who have worked closely with the designer believe his behavior is a result of the personal demons he suffers, caused by drugs, alcohol, stress — and the loss of a close friend.
The NY Post spoke to a respected fashion journalist in the UK who said Galliano, who was always known for his erratic behavior, really began to unravel in 2007 after the suicide of Stephen Robinson. Stephen was his right hand man at Dior and his signature John Galliano line. According to sources, the designer blamed himself for the untimely death which occurred when he was out of town.

It was a big night for David Michôd’s Animal Kingdom and Jane Campion’s Bright Star at the 2010 Samsung Mobile AFI Industry Awards last night, with three statues each. Glenn Dunks reports.
The first of the AFI Awards ceremonies rewarded the technical crafts and behind-the-scenes players in a gala hosted by actor Shane Jacobson.
Opening with speeches by AFI Chief Executive Officer Damian Trewhalla and the Deputy Lord Mayor of Melbourne Susan Riley as well as a musical performance by Claire Bowditch, the night was also filled with some great material from Jacobson.
Animal Kingdom took out the night’s big prize of the Member’s Choice Award and is the odds on favourite to reap far bigger rewards at tonight’s major ceremony. Bright Star could pose a threat, however, after it’s big haul including two for Janet Patterson (Best Production Design, Best Costume Design),who wasn’t at the ceremony.

Online advertising is taking a leap forward, so to speak, with ads that can be skipped or fast-forwarded. Skippable ads officially go live on YouTube today, and the digital ad company Panache has recently run ads that viewers can fast-forward through.
YouTube had been experimenting with its new ad format, which it calls TrueView, since June. Like Hulu, TrueView will sometimes allow viewers to select which ad they would prefer to watch. They get much wider deployment today.
The Panache ads work differently. Panache developed the fast-forward feature, which made its first appearance in an MTV Networks ad for Samsung that ran on ComedyCentral.com in September and October. Viewers were presented with a pop-up video featuring a large "fast-forward" button. Click it once, and the ad accelerates rapidly, while a hurried voice gives an elevator-pitch version of the message the ad intends to communicate. (Try it out here.)

Remember that one year (2001) when the list-happy AFI (American Film Institute) decided to compete with the Globes and the Oscars in year end prizes? No, that didn't last long. But there's another AFI, The Australian Film Institute, that has been around for a long time and is in no such danger of being a one-off. This year, they're all about the amazing family crime drama Animal Kingdom which they awarded with a record breaking 18 nominations. Sure, the film is in danger of being way overhyped for people who are coming to it late (which is just about everyone given the sorry state of international distribution for dramas of virtually any kind) but for those who can slough off the "omg" raves, I guarantee you'll think it at least an insinuating and well executed crime drama.

Sitting on a sofa beside his 71-year-old mother-in-law, Marian Robinson, at the Hyatt Regency Chicago just after 10 p.m., with his family having broken away from the bigger returns-watching party downstairs, Barack Obama already started to hear from campaign aides that news organizations were close to calling the election for Obama, People reports in its latest cover story, on sale Friday. But his uncle, Steve Robinson, beat them to it. "He said, 'I told you,' " Marian Robinson tells People. "We all had our little laugh, our little enjoyment when he said it. It was like, Ok, that means it’s true.
