Several months after the Hollywood Critics Association rebranded itself as the Hollywood Creative Alliance, the org has also given its signature awards shows a new name. The Hca announced Friday that its various Hca awards will now be known as ‘The Astra Awards.’
That means the Hca Film Awards, Hca TV Awards and Hca Creative Arts Awards will become the Astra Film Awards, Astra TV Awards and the Astra Creative Arts Awards. The name change was approved by the org’s advisory committee on Nov. 17.
“As the Hollywood Creative Alliance expands to include creatives and other industry professionals, we wanted an award name that would be reflective of the newly relaunched organization,” said Hca CEO Scott Menzel in a statement. “The name ‘Astra’ is a perfect award show title evoking celestial brilliance and creative mastery. On Monday night, November 27, at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City, the Gotham Awards presented the winners at their 33rd annual event. “All of Us Strangers” went in with a leading four bids, followed by “Past Lives,” “The Zone of Interest” and the TV limited series “Beef” with three apiece. But who prevailed? Scroll down for the full list, updated throughout the night.
The nominations were decided by panels of film and television critics, journalists, festival programmers and film curators. The winners were then selected by juries of writers, directors, actors, producers, editors and others directly involved in filmmaking. That makes these awards unique and often results in surprising winners like “The Rider” for Best Feature in 2018 over the higher-profile “The Favourite,” or Danielle Deadwyler (“Till”) for Best Lead Performance in 2022 over eventual Oscar winners Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) and Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”). While Gal Gadot and Dwayne Johnson’s ventures in the DC Extended Universe didn’t quite work out the way they had hoped, as well as the two finding themselves returning to a certain car franchise after a couple of cameos indicate their future involvement, they may co-star together yet again as Gal Gadot gives an update that a sequel to the Netflix heist-action-comedy Red Notice, which starred Gadot, Johnson, and fellow past DC casualty Ryan Reynolds, will still be getting a sequel.
Gadot will be starring in a new action movie that will be debuting on Netflix titled Heart of Stone. Disney is preparing to tackle their next live-action remake, giving “Moana” a 2025 release date. The studio announced a lengthy string of release dates and announcements for their 2024-2031 slate on Tuesday, including the date for “Moana.”
The film will open on June 27, 2025, which gives it a prime summer release date away from what could be a congested July 4th weekend.
The film won’t star original voice actress Auli’i Cravalho in the title role but the plot will remain the same, focusing on a young woman named Moana who wants to be a seafaring voyager. When her island home is threatened Moana must go forth onto the sea, alongside a demigod named Maui to save her people.
Casting for the title character is still on-going. Cravalho released a statement back in May saying, “I can’t wait to find the next actress to portray Moana’s courageous spirit, undeniable wit and emotional strength.

Auliʻi Cravalho won’t play Moana again. The 22-year-old actress took to Instagram on Friday and shared that she will not reprise her role from the 2016 animated film in the upcoming live-action remake.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is, unquestionably, one of the biggest stars in the world. The wrestler-turned-actor, at one point, gained a reputation for being "franchise Viagra" for his ability to increase the box office prospects of any given series, such as "Fast and Furious." His time in the DC Comics universe, however, was short-lived and proved to be not as impactful, as "Black Adam" flamed out rather spectacularly for everyone to see. But that wasn't the plant -- not by a long shot. As it happens, The Rock had grand plans to reinvent the entire DC Universe with him steering the ship.
A recent report from Variety detailed some of the behind-the-scenes discussionn that occurred in the lead up to and aftermath of "Black Adam." In particular, before James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as the new co-heads of DC Studios, Johnson made a pitch to Warner Bros. Discovery...

From chaos comes order, to paraphrase Nietzsche.
And that is certainly the hope in the new year when it comes to the DC Extended Universe, which endured the most tumultuous 12 months of any studio division in 2022. Amid the upheaval, the release plan for the upcoming “The Flash” teetered following a series of arrests and meltdowns involving its star Ezra Miller, closely guarded “Aquaman” deal points were laid bare in the Johnny Depp-Amber Heard defamation trial, and the 78 million “Batgirl” movie was permanently shelved in post-production as a write-down. All that was just an appetizer for an executive shake-up that landed James Gunn and Peter Safran in the DC driver’s seat. But perhaps nothing was as dramatic as Henry Cavill returning briefly as Superman in a “Black Adam” cameo in October, only to lose the gig two months later.
As 2023 kicks off, DC bosses Gunn and Safran continue...

Fans of superhero cinema showed up at theaters on Thursday to find out if DC’s Black Adam is going to “change the hierarchy” of the genre. New Line and DC‘s super-powered slugfest starring Dwayne Johnson as the titular anti-hero, earned 7.6 million in Thursday Night Preview screenings. The opening total marks a new high for the former wrestler turned Hollywood superstar when stacked against the following films: Fast and Furious 6 (7.5M), Hobbs and Shaw (5.8M), Jumanji: The Next Level (4.7M), San Andreas (3.1M) and Rampage (2.4M).
Analysts have adjusted Black Adam’s opening weekend total from 70M to 60M based on early reviews and the temperature of social media posts about the film. Black Adam is taking a beating from critics, with many saying the movie is a mediocre spectacle that crumples under its weight. On the other side of the spectrum, casual audiences and comic book fans enjoy the film much more.

"Black Adam" has only just hit theaters today, but producers are already talking up a potential sequel. The Dwayne Johnson-led DC superhero film has earned mixed reviews so far, with our own calling it "a jumbled mess of a movie that grabs great fistfuls of all-too-familiar blockbuster beats and throws them into a whirling, noisy centrifuge." It's one of those comic book flicks that seems to be building more buzz for its credits scene than for the movie itself. However, the ultimate measure of its success and sequel likelihood may come from commercial, not critical avenues, where producers are concerned.
In an interview with ComicBook.com, producers Beau Flynn and Hiram Garcia have indicated that we might not have long to wait for a "Black Adam" sequel, and certainly not as long as fans have been waiting for the first "Black Adam" movie, which cast Johnson all the way back...

Recently, we here at JoBlo had the chance to talk with the team behind DC’s Black Adam, which is set to kick off Dwayne Johnson’s reign in the Dceu as the titular anti-hero. Johnson has always been outspoken about how he hopes to be playing this character for a long time (perhaps even fighting the Man of Steel), and while speaking with producers Beau Flynn and Hiram Garcia, they made it clear that even if the star has many projects in the works, more Black Adam is a priority for all involved.
“This project and Black Adam in this world is something that he’s (Johnson) been working so hard to bring to life,” said Garcia. “And, and all of us, Beau (Flynn) and myself and Dany (Garcia), the other producer from Seven Bucks, and Dwayne, it’s been a lifelong mission to bring this to life. Box office juggernaut Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is DC’s Black Adam in the upcoming feature film directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (Orphan, The Shallows), which is coming to theaters on October 21, 2022. The film is being released with a family-safe “PG-13” rating attached to it, but it sounds like getting that rating from the MPA wasn’t exactly easy.
In a chat with Collider this week, producers Beau Flynn and Hiram Garcia explain that the super-violent Black Adam was submitted multiple times in order to get its “PG-13” rating.
Garcia tells Collider, “We really wanted to make sure that we honored the character of Black Adam. One of the things he’s known for is his aggression and violence, and to do a Black Adam movie that didn’t have that just wouldn’t have been authentic. So we always went into this knowing that we were going to push it as far as we did.

Black Adam was originally much more violent, it has emerged.
The DC Comics superhero film stars Dwayne Johnson as the titular character, acting opposite Pierce Brosnan, Noah Centineo, Aldis Hodge, and Quintessa Swindell.
Black Adam is rated PG-13 for “sequences of strong violence, intense action, and some language”.
The first several cuts of the film, however, originally earned an R rating, meaning unsuitable for children below the age of 17.
Producers Beau Flynn and Hiram Garcia confirmed to Collider that it took “four rounds” of cuts for the Motion Pictures Association to grant Black Adam the PG-13 rating.
According to Flynn, the original cut of the film featured 10 violent kills carried out by Jonhson’s character. The production team removed around five of those kills in order to secure the PG-13 rating.
Garcia told the publication: â.â.“We really wanted to make sure that we honoured the character of Black Adam.

Although we’ve been seeing more R-rated comicbook movies in recent years, it’s definitely not the norm for mainstream Marvel or DC fare. Keeping bloodshed and deaths to a minimum fits with the superhero code, but it doesn’t exactly suit a character like Black Adam (Dwayne Johnson). While chatting with Collider, Black Adam producers Beau Flynn and Hiram Garcia said that the film actually landed an R-rating when it went before the MPA.

For well over a year now, Dwayne Johnson and the rest of the team behind "Black Adam" have been hyping the upcoming DC film as a turning point for the DC Extended Universe, with special emphasis on the fact that the titular character is a somewhat merciless badass. As it turns out, they weren't joking: according to Collider, the film came very close to landing an R rating for its violence.
The outlet spoke with producers Beau Flynn and Hiram Garcia in an interview, where Flynn revealed that "Black Adam" went not one, not two, but "four rounds" with the MPA, the group responsible for approving American theatrical movie ratings, before it finally landed a more audience-friendly PG-13 rating.

Said the actor of a matchup between the DC characters: “Pound for pound, they are pretty close. I guess it probably all depends on who is playing Superman.

On the morning of June 23, just hours before Thor: Love and Thunder’s world premiere at Hollywood’s El Capitan Theatre, Walt Disney Co. senior publicist Marshall Weinbaum tweeted a polite request for discretion to the first audience to take in Taika Waititi’s new Marvel Studios effort.
“Let’s please (please, please) be respectful in our tweets so fans can equally discover the movie themselves when it opens next month!” Then, like Thor, Weinbaum dropped the hammer. “As a reminder, I don’t work with outlets who post spoilers and leaks.”
While the not-so-veiled threat was aimed at the Hollywood press and Twitterati, Weinbaum’s post signaled the tough stance some studios are taking to protect content. Ever since word of mouth migrated from water coolers and cineplex sidewalks to social media platforms, insiders have been forced to grapple with a foe...

Dwayne Johnson just made it official on his social media: New Line’s Black Adam is heading to San Diego Comic-Con. There was a question whether Warner Bros’ DC feature side would be at the fanboy confab; now they are.
The Black Adam panel is set for Saturday, July 23 in Hall H. “6,000 Strong,” Johnson wrote Thursday.
The movie opens on October 21. Johnson, who has been developing Black Adam for a decade, plays the title character, with Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate, Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, Aldis Hodge as Hawkman and Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone.
The plot: early 5,000 years after he was bestowed with the almighty powers of the Egyptian gods-and imprisoned just as quickly-Black Adam (Johnson) is freed from his earthly tomb, ready to unleash his unique form of justice on the modern world.
Jaume Collet-Serra directs the pic, which Adam Sztykiel, Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani wrote. Beau Flynn,...

The Brady organization against gun violence is calling on Hollywood writers, directors and producers to examine onscreen gun violence and depictions of gun safety, asking the creative community to sign a pledge that’s already garnered more than 200 signatures of such names as Judd Apatow, Shonda Rhimes, Damon Lindelof and Jimmy Kimmel and the writers of Jimmy Kimmel Live!
The pledge, while noting that the “responsibility lies with lax gun laws supported by those politicians more afraid of losing power than saving lives,” acknowledges that “America’s storytellers” have the power to “effect change.”
“Cultural attitudes toward smoking, drunk driving, seatbelts and marriage equality have all evolved due in large part to movies’ and TV’s influence. It’s time to take on gun safety,” the Brady pledge states, and goes on to ask writers, directors and producers to, whenever possible, to:

Exclusive: After recently signing an overall deal with the studio, Lindsey Beer and Paramount look to have found their next big property to tackle. Sources tell Deadline that the studio is set to reboot the classic horror title Sleepy Hollow, with Beer writing, directing and producing alongside Todd Garner and Spencer Walken of Broken Road Productions.
The tale about the headless horseman who terrorizes a small town and its newest resident, Ichabod Crane, has seen many iterations over the decades including the 1949 Disney animated movie and the 2010s Fox TV series. The most popular one was produced by Paramount in 1999 and starred Johnny Depp as Crane with Tim Burton directing. The film grossed more than 200 million at the worldwide box office and remains a must-watch during the Halloween season.
Exact plot details are unknown for Beer’s adaptation at this time.
