Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt may have collaborated on two albums, but the former wasn’t sure she fit in with Ronstadt’s friend group. Parton has been involved with the music industry since she was a child and rose to major fame in adulthood. Still, she didn’t feel that she fit in with a crowd at Ronstadt’s house.
Dolly Parton didn’t feel she fit in at Linda Ronstadt’s party
By the end of the 1970s, Parton, who had solidly established herself in the country music scene, crossed over to mainstream success. Through all of this, she maintained a shimmering vitality and sincerity. As she achieved increasing levels of fame, she stayed true to her roots. For this reason, she became slightly uncomfortable when surrounded by other celebrities.
“I can tell you one thing,” her guitarist Don Roth said in the book Dolly by Alanna Nash.

Blake Shelton is one of the most notable names in country music — and, of course, he knows Taylor Swift. While Swift stepped into the world of pop and folk music in her later years as a songwriter, she began her career as a country sensation. Recently, Shelton noted that he’s written letters that he hoped would get back to Swift. Here’s why.
Blake Shelton said he wrote letters in the hopes of getting Taylor Swift to sing at his new bar
Blake Shelton has big plans for himself now that he’s no longer coaching on The Voice. Shelton left the music reality TV series after 23 seasons. And he made it clear that he has no intentions of returning. Now, he’s focused on spending time with Gwen Stefani’s boys and making new music. He also recently opened a new bar, Ole Red Las Vegas, which serves as a bar,...

In 1976, Dolly Parton spread her wings in the entertainment industry and began to host a television show. While it wasn’t always a perfect experience — she didn’t always feel that producers’ visions aligned with hers — she was incredibly proud of one episode. She worked so well with her guests that she went on to record an album with them.
Dolly Parton was very proud of an episode of her television show
Parton hosted the variety show Dolly in 1976 and 1977. Two of her early guests were Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris. She felt nothing but pride for the way they gelled on the episode.

“I did manage to do one show, however, that I will always be proud of. It is probably the best half-hour of television I ever did,” she wrote in her book Dolly: My Life and Other Unfinished Business.

Robert Downey Jr.’s tumultuous past with addiction might’ve made him the perfect actor to help Gwyneth Paltrow with this role. When Paltrow was tapped to play an addict, she figured she could seek inspiration from Downey Jr.’s own experiences.

Paltrow did a lot of research to get into the mind of an addict for her 2010 feature Country Strong. She played troubled country singer Kelly Canter in the flick, who’d spend most of the film battling her self-destructive lifestyle. The film required Paltrow to step out of her comfort zone in multiple ways. She wasn’t a fan of country music, so she had to familiarize herself with the genre to better prepare for the role.

For years, Dolly Parton’s husband, Carl Dean, dealt with rumors of her infidelity. Tabloids reported on her alleged affairs with co-stars and even she discussed her flirtatious relationships with other celebrities. It never bothered Dean, though. Parton said he seldom got jealous, to the point where he was happy to wave her off on a romantic trip with another man.

While working on the album Trio with Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt, Parton became good friends with a man named Bob Hunka. The pair clicked right away.

The long-time indie-rock underdog hero won herself a lot of new fans with Saint Cloud, her 2020 breakthrough hit, going for a laid-back style of heartland rock & roll twang. But Tigers Blood is even more rugged and confident, a master storyteller fully aware she’s on a hot streak. She sings about adult romance, struggling for sobriety, the day-to-day work of holding...

Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton seem like an unlikely duo when it comes to making music, but the married couple has successfully found a way to combine their unique styles. Shelton comes from country music, while Stefani’s famous ’90s band, No Doubt, became famous through the ska-punk scene. Recently, Stefani admitted that she found Shelton’s singing voice “jarring” when she first heard it. Here’s what she said.

Dolly Parton was born January 10, 1946 as the fourth of 12 children in Tennessee. What her family lacked in money was more than made up in love and support, and a young Parton was inspired by her upbringing and surroundings, sparking her love of music. By the age of 13, she was learning guitar, writing music and performing; upon high school graduation, she moved to Nashville and embarked on one of the most successful careers in musical history. Well beyond her country and pop career, she was a 2022 inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Selena Gomez will play Linda Ronstadt in an upcoming biopic based on the superstar singer’s 2013 memoir Simple Dreams.
The Only Murders In The Building star and executive producer gave credence to the months-old internet rumors about the project today by posting a photo of the memoir as an Instagram Story. Deadline’s sister publication Rolling Stone later confirmed the casting.
The movie is in pre-production, with James Keach and Ronstadt’s longtime manager John Boylan co-producing. Additional casting and release date have not been announced.
An unconfirmed report of Gomez’s involvement in the biopic surfaced last July, but the Ig Story today moved the possibility into the definite.
Keach directed the 2020 film Linda and the Mockingbirds, a documentary chronicling a road trip undertaken by Ronstadt, Jackson Browne and a group of younger musicians to the Mexican town of Banámichi in the state of Sonora, the birthplace of Ronstadt’s grandfather.

There’s a reason the word honors is in the title. To help celebrate the lifetime contributions of artists in music, dance, theater, opera, movies and TV, the Kennedy Center Honors routinely pay tribute to its recipients by rewarding them with memorable performances.
Scores of artists have been feted since the Honors got their start in 1978, but there are certain tributes that remain sketched in our hearts forever. During a 2009 interview with Clash, Paul recalled the origin of “Here, There and Everywhere.” He remembered liking it from the beginning. Paul didn’t think he was being immodest by feeling he was on a roll when he penned that song. He went on to cite “Here, There and Everywhere” as a personal favorite. Considering he’s the same guy who wrote “Yesterday,” “Let It Be,” and “Band on the Run,” that’s an incredible compliment!

At 77 years young, Dolly Parton has earned the highest-charting album of her legendary career with Rockstar. The star-studded rock ‘n’ roll project debuted this week at No. 3.
Though she’s landed on the chart 49 times in the past — the first time being in 1969 — Rockstar marks Parton’s highest-charting album to date. She previously achieved two top 10 albums, with 2014’s Blue Smoke and 1987’s Trio (her collaborative LP with Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris) both peaking at No. 6.
Rockstar was inspired by Parton’s 2022 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and dropped on November 17th. With a tracklist of new originals and classic rock covers, the album features appearances by rock icons like Paul McCartney, Elton John, Stevie Nicks, Ringo Starr, Miley Cyrus, Chris Stapleton, Debbie Harry, Nikki Sixx, Sting, Steve Perry, Steven Tyler, and many, many more. Dolly Parton isn’t done rocking yet. After sharing her new album Rockstar last week, our November cover star has returned with two new bonus tracks: Her rendition of the Eddie Money’s “Two Tickets to Paradise,” plus a new version of her classic “Jolene” featuring Måneskin.
The Måneskin-assisted version of “Jolene” is available exclusively with the digital download version of Rockstar on Parton’s website, though the country icon did share a preview of the duet on Instagram. It sounds like the new recording stays fairly faithful to the original, with Måneskin’s Damiano David taking on co-lead vocals with Parton.
“Jolene” appears on the deluxe edition of Rockstar, which also features guest features from Sting, Steve Perry, Joan Jett, Mick Fleetwood, Pat Benatar, Brandi Carlile, and many, many more. See a preview clip of Måneskin’s take on “Jolene” below.

Dolly Parton couldn’t wait more than a weekend to start expanding her new rock album, Rockstar, quipping on Instagram yesterday, “Surprise! Did you all think I was done?”
As part of the “download exclusive version” of the album, Parton has tacked on two extra tracks: A new rendition of her classic “Jolene” featuring Måneskin, as well as a cover of Eddie Money’s 1977 hit, “Two Tickets To Paradise.
As it stands, the two bonus cuts are only available if you purchase the downloadable version of Rockstar on Parton’s website.

Rockstar, the star-studded rock’n’roll album by our November cover star, Dolly Parton, has arrived. Stream it below.
Inspired by her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, Rockstar is the 49th full-length release from Parton, and features a variety of new originals and classic rock covers, as well as a heap of guest appearances by artists like Paul McCartney, Elton John, Stevie Nicks, Ringo Starr, Miley Cyrus, Chris Stapleton, Debbie Harry, Nikki Sixx, and many more.
Speaking with Paramore’s Hayley Williams for Consequence’s most recent cover story, Parton explained that when she found out she was voted into the Rock Hall, she “didn’t feel like [she’d] earned it.” To make up for that, she got into the studio and cut a proper rock album, without cutting any corners. “That was important to me: not to half-ass do a record that’s a country girl singing some rock,...

Dolly Parton is arguably the most beloved living American. How many people are alive today because Dolly told them to get the Covid vaccine back in early 2021? Of course, she’s a paragon of country music, but her reach goes far beyond Nashville, from the disco pop of her working-woman masterpiece “9 to 5” to the soft-rock bliss of her classic Kenny Rogers duet “Islands in the Stream.” And the crossover love has been reflected back; one of the most popular cover songs of all time is Whitney Houston’s...

Equal Strain on All Parts, the 31st and final album from the late Jimmy Buffett, is out now.
Comprising 11 originals and three covers, Equal Strain on All Parts is a fitting final entry in Buffett’s studio catalog. It features an array of collaborators including Paul McCartney, Emmylou Harris, Angelique Kidjo, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
Naturally, Equal Strain is a mostly lighthearted record, its title inspired by Buffett’s grandfather’s description of a good nap. With a tracklist including song names like “Fish Porn,” “My Gummie Just Kicked In,” “University of Bourbon Street,” and “Nobody Works on Friday,” it encapsulates the most important tenet in Buffett’s artistry: Having a good time.
Pre-orders for Equal Strain on All Parts are ongoing. Stream the record via Apple Music and Spotify below.
Buffett died this past September at the age of 76 after a prolonged battle with skin cancer and lymphoma.

When Jimmy Buffett died on September 1, he left a finished album in the can ready for release. Equal Strain on All Parts, his 32nd LP, is every bit the laidback, eclectic, inviting set of tunes you’d expect from the beloved singer-songwriter, bridging pop, country, and rock & roll, mixing island sounds and down-home vibes, and balancing five-o’clock-somewhere good times with gentle life wisdom.
The casually rocking “My Gummie Just Kicked In,” was inspired by something Paul McCartney’s wife Nancy Shevell said to Buffett at a dinner party, and features McCartney on bass.

Dolly Parton’s favorite word might be “no.”
She turned down Elvis Presley when he wanted to record her hit “I Will Always Love You” after his manager requested half of the song’s publishing rights. She initially declined her invitation to join the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And she forwent performing at the Super Bowl halftime show — several times.
Most artists wouldn’t pass on those golden opportunities, but this American treasure is unbothered.
“Oh, sure. I’ve been offered that many times,” Parton tells The Hollywood Reporter about the halftime show. “I couldn’t do it because of other things, or I just didn’t think I was big enough to do it — to do that big of a production. When you think about those shows, those are big, big productions. I’ve never done anything with that big of a production. I don’t know if I could have.

Before his death, Jimmy Buffett put his distinct spin on one of the most Buffett-esque songs Bob Dylan ever wrote, “Mozambique,” even enlisting Emmylou Harris — who sang backup on the original — to reprise her role. The cover will appear on the upcoming posthumous Buffett album, Equal Strain on All Parts, out Nov. 3.
Dylan’s original, off 1976’s Desire, is plenty jaunty and sun-soaked on its own, though not without some ramshackle touches. Buffett and Harris keep that original energy while smoothing out some of the edges, most notably substituting the...

A little more than a decade ago, Alice Gerrard received an invitation to perform at a fiddle camp in Washington state.
“Should I bring an older musician with me?” Gerrard, 76 at the time, asked her friend Suzy Thompson, who was organizing the event.

Although he’d been coping with health issues during the last few years of his life, Jimmy Buffett remained productive, working on his first record of new music since 2020. That album, Equal Strain on All Parts, due Nov. 3, was completed shortly before his death of skin cancer at 76 on Sept. 1. Three new songs will preview the record: “Bubbles Up,” “My Gummie Just Kicked In,” and “Like My Dog.”
“Bubbles Up,” the first song to be unveiled, is a reflective ballad that, like later Buffett songs such as “Tides,” reveals a deeper side to his music.

Robbie Robertson, a founder of The Band and a collaborator for both Bob Dylan and Martin Scorsese, died August 9 at the age of 80. Robertson was Scorsese’s music producer starting with 1982’s “The King of Comedy” and they most recently worked together on “Killers of the Flower Moon,” which Apple and Paramount will open this fall.

Sixteen years ago, in 2007, Neil Young puzzled quite a few people when he released a new album called Chrome Dreams II. Only his most devoted followers knew that the title was a reference to Chrome Dreams, an entirely different album he had put together in 1977 before shelving it in favor of American Stars ‘n Bars. The original Chrome Dreams leaked out years later as a bootleg drawn from the ’77 acetate, and many fans felt he had made the wrong choice. “In many ways,” Young biographer Jimmy McDonough wrote in his 2002 Young biography,...

Origins is a recurring series that gives artists a space to break down everything that went into their latest release. Today, Gavin Rossdale takes us through his “1000 Years” duet with Amy Lee from Bush’s deluxe edition of The Art of Survival.
Bush are set to unveil a deluxe edition of their 2022 album The Art of Survival this Friday (June 9th). In advance of the release, Gavin Rossdale is sharing the origins of a new version of the song “1000 Years” featuring a duet with Evanescence singer Amy Lee.
Rossdale and Lee performed the song together during a Bush show at the famed Ryman Auditorium in Nashville in February of this year. Prior to joining the band onstage, Lee sent Rossdale a demo of her vocals on the track, bringing the Bush frontman to tears.
“She sent me the song back with her vocal on it,” he told Audacy Music in an interview following the performance.
