Over three days of testimony this week, Donald Trump’s hush money trial in Manhattan has spawned subplots inside and outside the courtroom.
With a decision on one contempt motion pending, Judge Juan Merchan has scheduled a hearing on Thursday for prosecutors to argue that Trump has committed more violations of the judge’s gag order against disparaging or intimidating witnesses, jurors and other trial participants.
At the first contempt hearing on Tuesday, prosecutors sought fines for ten Trump online posts blasting witnesses Stormy Daniels and Michael Cohen and calling prospective jurors “liberal activists.” Assistant Manhattan District Attorney Chris Conroy said that next week’s hearing will cover four more alleged gag-order violations.
The last was at a construction site in Midtown Manhattan on Thursday where Trump visited with workers before heading to court. There, Trump talked about the prosecution’s first witness, David Pecker, the former CEO of National Enquirer publisher American Media,...

Updated with Trump response: After just three hours of deliberations, a New York jury today said Donald Trump has to pay E. Jean Carroll more than $83 million in her defamation trial against the former president.
Of that impressive $83.3 million, $65 million is punitive damages and $11 million is for harm to the former Elle columnist’s reputation.
“I fully disagree with both verdicts, and will be appealing this whole Biden Directed Witch Hunt focused on me and the Republican Party,” a self pitying Trump said soon afterwards on social media. “This is not America,” Trump added on his Truth Social platform in words he was heard to mumble yesterday and similar to what the now incarcerated Harvey Weinstein said when he was found guilty of rape in 2020 by another Manhattan jury

Brooke Shields is recalling a certain encounter she had with former President Donald Trump in the 1990s during her new cabaret act, Fame Is Weird.
During an interview with The New York Times, she discussed the opener to her act: a story about Trump asking her to date him.
“I was making some movie in the late ’90s. My phone rang, and it was him,” she recalled.
According to Shields, Trump boldly said, “You and I should date. You’re America’s sweetheart, and I’m the world’s richest man. People will love it.”
When recounting the offer, Shields admits that she was holding back laughter as she told Trump, “Thank you, I’m very flattered, but I have a boyfriend, and I don’t think he would appreciate me stepping out on him.”

(Updated with more details) A federal jury in Manhattan just found Donald Turmp liable today in the civil battery and defamation case brought by E. Jean Carroll. The writer claimed that that the one-time real estate mogul raped her in a department store dressing room in the mid-1990s.
While not finding Trump guilty of rape, the jury of six men and three women in the civil case did find him liable for sexual abuse and defamation. The jury awarded $2 million to Carroll for battery, and $3 million for defamation.
The past and present candidate for the White House had repeatedly mocked, attacked and dismissed Carroll’s claims. Trump, who denied the allegations and of even knowing Carroll all that well, referred to the decades old matter as “a complete con job.” In typical Trump fashion, the defendant claimed that former Elle magazine columnist Carroll simply made up the attack in...

An October 2022 video of Donald Trump being interrogated about the rape allegations against him was made public on Friday. Jurors involved in the E. Jean Carroll civil battery and defamation trial had access to written transcripts of the former president’s testimony but not the recording.
In the video deposition, Trump affirmed that he previously made official statements that he did not know Carroll, described her allegations that he raped her in a department store dressing room in the mid-90s as a “hoax” and “a false, disgusting lie” and said she was “not his type.” He also called Carroll several names, including “nut job” and “mentally sick.”

Kimberly Guilfoyle was slammed for her black dress at Tiffany Trump’s wedding this weekend.
A photo of the Trump ensemble shows Tiffany at the center in a white Ellie Saab gown next too her mother Marla Maples in a light purple dress and stepmother Melania in peach. Ivanka is seen donning a pastel blue gown in an homage to Grace Kelly in To Catch A Thief, and sister-in-law Lara sported a silver, shimmering dress.
In the original photo, Guilfoyle appears on the end in a black dress with large puffed sleeves and black heels. However, Ivanka created some controversy when she posted the photo with Guilfoyle cropped out entirely.
Some said they didn’t blame Ivanka for the crop, citing that Guilfoyle’s dress was inappropriate for the occasion.

Jimmy Kimmel talked about several weirder details about Maggie Haberman’s new Donald Trump biography in his monologue on Wednesday night’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live — most notably very off-putting stories about Trump’s love life, including one that involved a Michael Bolton concert.
Haberman received a lot of criticism for the new book, “Confidence Man,” because it would seem there were instances of her learning information of national importance while writing it that she held back from the public to make her book juicier.
But not everything in that book was stuff she could have reported sooner than she did. Some of it is gossipy and weird and somewhat funny info that really fleshes out the character of a man who tried to overthrow the government when he lost an election. Like the stuff Kimmel talked about.

“Unprecedented” is a good title for a documentary series about the last six weeks of Donald J. Trump’s presidency, notably the events of January 6. You could say, and you’d be right, that nothing in the Trump presidency had much precedent, from his bombs-away talk-radio-host-in-chief habit of saying whatever the hell was on his mind to his penchant for achieving policy through chaos. But with the 2020 campaign and election, Trump topped even his own sociopathic shoot-from-the-lip self. His claim that the election had been stolen by Joe Biden effectively set the stage for the next level of alternate reality in American politics, one that we might call “Goodbye democracy, hello QAnon!”
I only wish I could say that the 149 minutes of “Unprecedented” (which dropped Sunday on Discovery+) were more unprecedented. It’s a show for anyone who feels like they haven’t spent enough time in their life watching...

We also touched on the screenplay, co-written with Diomedes Raul Bermudez and Shiloh Fernandez (who also stars as Gio), the possible subliminal influence of Shiloh being in Catherine Hardwicke’s Red Riding Hood on the script, and Sean Price Williams’ entrancing cinematography.
Jimmy Giannopoulos (pointing to his Frank Sinatra poster) with Anne-Katrin Titze on seeing Emory Cohen in John Crowley’s adaptation of Colm Tóibín’s novel Brooklyn: “I was really blown away by him as a performer.”

The plot’s baffling, but not as baffling as why Kilmer, Ewan McGregor, and Paul Sorvino signed up for the director’s debut feature
Writer-director-composer Jimmy Giannopoulos doesn’t have a lot of previous credits to his name, and this gangster drama seems to be his first feature. But he or his producers are either extremely persuasive or very well connected because, given its meandering script and absurdly grand guignol ending, it’s astonishing that The Birthday Cake could attract such a starry cast. Admittedly lead actor Shiloh Fernandez, who plays son-of-a-dead-gangster Gio, isn’t yet a household name but within minutes his character is meeting Ewan McGregor playing a priest who inexplicably also narrates the story (his daughter Clara McGregor is a producer here and has a small role herself), while Lorraine Bracco features for an only slightly longer time as Gio’s widowed mother, and baker of the birthday cake of the title.

Brian Austin Green is finally on the board with a correct guess on “The Masked Dancer.” After mistaking the Disco Ball for LL Cool J (instead of Ice-t) and the Ice Cube for Bill Maher (instead of Bill Nye), the “Beverly Hills, 90210” star redeemed himself by being the only judge to name Elizabeth Smart as the Moth. Elizabeth made headlines in 2002 after being kidnapped at the age of 14; she later became a best-selling author and a child safety activist. Brian’s savvy guess means he’s one of only two panelists to earn a point in Season 1 — see the updated list below. Did You guess her identity at home?

Elizabeth Smart wasn’t interested at first in appearing on Fox’s “The Masked Dancer.” But after her grandmother passed away, Smart said she had an epiphany.
“She certainly lived life to the fullest,” Smart said. “As I was sitting at her funeral, thinking about life and death, I just thought, it’s okay to have fun. It’s okay to do something happy. Not everything I do has to be 100% serious all the time. I’m more than just a one-sided person, so why not.”
Smart was revealed to be the person under the Moth costume on Wednesday’s edition of “The Masked Dancer.” Smart said she also felt that after the dark events of 2020, she wanted to do something light hearted and fun.
“It was probably the most terrifying thing that I’ve ever voluntarily done,” Smart said. “But it was a lot of fun. I mean, how...

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for last night’s “The Masked Dancer.”)
We’re two episodes into the first season of Fox’s “The Masked Dancer,” a spinoff of the smash-hit competition “The Masked Singer,” which puts the disguised celebrity contestants’ moves center stage, rather than their voices.
Following Wednesday’s episode, we have now seen performances from all 10 masked stars competing on Season 1, and the un-maskings of two eliminated performers: Group A’s Disco Ball (who turned out to be Ice-t) and Group B’s Ice Cube (revealed to be Bill Nye).
But who are the famous people still left to be unveiled? Here TheWrap has rounded up the guesses thrown out by “Masked Dancer” judges Ken Jeong, Paula Abdul, Brian Austin Green and Ashley Tisdale for the identities of the remaining eight Season 1 contestants.

President Donald Trump mentioned Bob Hope in a tweet on Monday, saying that Dr. Anthony Fauci had more airtime than anyone since the legendary entertainer.
Fauci “gets more airtime than anybody since the late, great, Bob Hope,” Trump wrote.
This is another Trump falsehood; despite his long career as the nation’s top infectious disease expert, Fauci has only been a prominent media figure since the start of coronavirus pandemic earlier this year. Hope appeared in hundreds of TV shows over five decades.

Sean Spicer flashed across the screen in a neon green puffy shirt for his debut on ABC’s Dancing With The Stars — at least he chose a blinding lime over Trump orange.
He danced a salsa with professional Lindsay Arnold to the Spice Girls “Spice Up Your Life,” and while he earned some respect for the judges for being game to doing the show, they scored near the bottom of all of the contestants, scoring 12 out of 30.
“I started off at minus ten,” Spicer said afterward, standing next to Arnold. “She has been a phenomenal coach.”
His segment started with him playing the bongos before he went in to the dance moves with Arnold, but it failed to impress the judges. They did give him credit for trying.
“I have to say it was strangely entertaining,” said judge Bruno Tonioli, who otherwise said that “there were some elements of salsa there.

On Monday night, friends of E. Jean Carroll gathered at a small party for her at a Brooklyn brownstone. Someone had baked a heart-shaped pink cake with the word “Brave” spelled out on it in red sugar. Carroll, the advice columnist and author — and Trump’s latest sexual assault accuser — had just come off a day spinning through the media cycle. She sipped Chartreuse on ice, and maintained a cool, calm and wry demeanor, a little distracted by hugs and well-wishers’ tears. She told everyone she was doing fine, that...

President Donald Trump still is raking in the dough from his days in Hollywood, pulling down a $90,776 SAG pension and an $8,724 AFTRA pension last year, according to his latest financial disclosure report.
Those figures represent a significant increase over last year’s report, when he received a SAG pension totaling $64,840 and an AFTRA pension in the amount of $6,543. The annual reports are released by the Office of Government Ethics, as required by law.
The president is also still collecting residuals from guest appearances on old TV shows and movies. He got $201-$1,000 in residuals from WB Studios, mostly from a 1994 appearance with then-wife Marla Maples on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. He got a similar amount of residuals from Universal Studios, mostly from an appearance in the 1994 film The Little Rascals. Entertainment Partners sent him a similar amount. He reported identical incomes from those sources last year.

Updated with video: Jimmy Kimmel opened his ABC late-night show reacting to President Donald Trump’s just-wrapped State of the Union Address.
“This was a long speech, a really long speech. His speech was longer than his tie,” Kimmel snarked. “He spoke for so long, Robert Mueller handed down another 5 indictments.”
“He spoke for longer than he was married to Marla Maples.”
Trump presented a lot of “exciting new ideas,” Kimmel admitted. “For instance, did you know Mexicans are scary and we need to build a wall to keep them away? Did you know this Guillermo? Trump talked more about fighting Aliens tonight than Sigourney Weaver.”
Republicans ate it up.
Trump’s address took more than a 80 minutes. Minus all the applause breaks, however, it would have been seven minutes. “But there was so much clapping, because they know he’s going to go home and he’s going to...

As someone who has loved Stephen King’s Maximum Overdrive for more than 30 years now (I wrote about it Here a few years back), the recent Vestron Video Collector’s Series Blu-ray for what I consider to be the ultimate cult film of the 1980s is an absolute treasure trove of awesomeness for fans and newcomers alike. The special features dive into literally everything you could want (minus an interview with King and Maximum Overdrive star Emilio Estevez), from the casting to the effects to how producers Dino De Laurentiis and Martha Schumacher (De Laurentiis) helped establish “Hollywood East” in Wilmington, North Carolina, and even follows the story of how the Green Goblin head came to be restored back in 2011.
I won’t really dive into the story of Maximum Overdrive, because chances are, if you’re reading this site, you are probably already pretty familiar with King’s tale...

With a reboot of the 1980s sitcom “Designing Women” in the works during the presidency of Donald Trump, it’s worth looking back to an episode of the original series that needled the future commander in chief.

Sigh. Just when forgot about Melania Trump's plagarized speech at the 2016 Republican National Convention, the First Lady (unknowingly?) copied the Obamas again. Melania unveiled her "Be Best" campaign, which is focused on social media use and well-being, but the accompanying pamphlet produced by her team caught some eagle-eyed political commentators' attention for the wrong reason. "Fun fact: The White House trumpets “Talking with Kids about Being Online" as "a booklet by First Lady Melania Trump and the Federal Trade Commission." Except for an intro, it's exactly the same thing Obama's FTC put out," The Rude Pundit tweeted along with a side-by-side split of the two identical documents. So, yes, the pamphlet published by the Federal Trade Commission is basically the same one put out during the Obama Administration. Except this time, it was not longer called "Net Cetera — Chatting With Kids About Being Online." Fun fact: The White House...
