On the surface, the whimsy of Pee-wee’s Playhouse appears to be worlds apart from the solemnity of Boyz N the Hood, other than the curious resemblance between Cowboy Curtis and Furious Styles. But it’s no coincidence that Laurence Fishburne and other key creatives were part of both projects.
As a USC film student in the late 1980s, John Singleton spent one summer working as a security guard-slash-production assistant on the set of Pee-wee’s Playhouse. “John was the lowest of lowly PAs,” recalled Fishburne on Late Night with Conan O’Brien in 1995. “He was working on the door and his job was to stop people at the door and go, ‘Are you supposed to be here? Do you have the proper ID?’”
Singleton would press Fishburne for stories of working with Spike Lee, as the actor had appeared in School Daze a few months prior. The budding filmmaker...

Jeff Beck played his first gigs on a guitar he built himself, plugging in with local bands in the London suburbs from age 13, before honing his craft at Wimbledon School of Art, studying the artistry of rock and roll and rhythm and blues. Beck mixed the virtuosity and speed Les Paul displayed on radio broadcasts, and the heaviness of even the most melodic Gene Vincent records into his own sound. Beck transformed The Yardbirds from blues purists to proto psychedelia pioneers before inventing hard rock on The Jeff Beck Group’s 1968 Truth album. A new Jeff Beck Group came out with Rough and Ready, infusing fluid jazz phrasings onto R&b ensemble rhythms.
It’s been said Pink Floyd considered asking Beck to join after Syd Barrett left. Beck turned down an invitation to replace Brian Jones in the Rolling Stones for a project with Vanilla Fudge bassist and vocalist Tim Bogert,...

Rolling Stone interview series Unknown Legends features long-form conversations between senior writer Andy Greene and veteran musicians who have toured and recorded alongside icons for years, if not decades. All are renowned in the business, but some are less well known to the general public. Here, these artists tell their complete stories, giving an up-close look at life on music’s A list. This edition features bassist Darryl Jones.
Darryl Jones has been playing bass in the Rolling Stones since 1993, logging almost exactly as many years in the band as original bassist Bill Wyman did.

Rick Laird, whose bass guitar skills graced a number of jazz rock’s most prominent fusion bands in the 1970s, died Sunday at age 80. No cause of death was given, but he recently had entered hospice care.
Laird’s work was part of pioneering groups the Mahavishu Orchestra and Return to Forever in the 1970s, the decade where the genre took off. He also worked with jazz greats Wes Montgomery, Buddy Rich and Sonny Rollins during his career.
Born in Dublin in 1941, Laird moved to New Zealand at 16, then returned to the UK in 1962. While in New Zealand, he had established himself on that country’s and Australia’s jazz scenes as an upright bassist.
Upon his UK return, he worked with keyboardist Brian Auger, touring with him and meeting his future bandmate, John McLaughlin.

It Is What It Is is Stephen Lee Bruner's fourth album as Thundercat and features the singles 'Black Qualls', 'Dragonball Durag', 'Fair Chance' and viral hit 'Funny Thing'. Joined by a stellar cast of musical friends – Ty Dolla $ign, Childish Gambino, Lil B, Kamasi Washington, Steve Lacy, Steve Arrington, Badbadnotgood, Louis Cole, Pedro Martins and Zack Fox – the record was produced by Thundercat and his longtime partner Flying Lotus who was Grammy-nominated in 'Producer of the Year, Non-Classical' for his work on the album.
Silly, sentimental and serious – often all at the same time – "This album is about love, loss, life and the ups and downs that come with that," Bruner says. "It's a bit tongue-in-cheek, but at different points in life you come across places that you don't necessarily understand… some things just aren't meant to be understood." As Chick Corea witnessed for himself again and again, including on the British music series The Old Grey Whistle Test in 1976, the strangest thing happened in pop during the Seventies. Music fans would buy tickets to arena or amphitheater shows by bands like Return to Forever — founded and fronted by the late jazz keyboardist, who died of an unspecified type of cancer on February 9th at 79. Then they would settle into their seats and watch, and attentively listen, as the musicians would play an hour or two of entirely instrumental music.

Chick Corea, the virtuosic keyboardist who broadened the scope of jazz during a career spanning more than five decades, died on Tuesday from a rare form of cancer. A post on his Facebook page confirmed the news. Corea was 79.
“Throughout his life and career, Chick relished in the freedom and the fun to be had in creating something new, and in playing the games that artists do,” his family wrote in a statement. “Through his body of work and the decades he spent touring the world, he touched and inspired the lives of millions.

Suddenly, the word of Meera bhajan fitted beautifully into it. "That inspired me to make more songs. My husband (violinist L. Subramaniam) said I should record them. We recorded 20 days ago. J.D. Souther John David Souther Black Rose Home by Dawn (Omnivore) J.D. Souther's songs are better known as sung by other people, which is good for his bank account but puzzling if you've heard his fine LPs. I wouldn't be surprised if more people nowadays know of him from his acting on the TV series Nashville than from his career in music. If there's any justice, these three reissues will redress that imbalance.

Earlier today, Alexandre Desplat was a rather surprising winner for Best Film Music at this year's BAFTA Awards in London for his work in Wes Anderson's "The Grand Budapest Hotel." Well, it's a great day for the prolific composer as he has just won a Grammy for the score as well, in the Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media Category. Given the film's early-year release date, though, Desplat was mostly contending with 2013 films. Christophe Beck was nominated for "Frozen," while two of last year's Oscar nominees, "Gravity" (Steven Price, who won the Academy Award) and "Saving Mr. Banks" (Thomas Newman) were in there as well. The only 2014 film in competition was "Gone Girl," and alas, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross deferred to Mr. Desplat on this one. Does that signal some clarity in the Oscar race? Not necessarily. But the film is obviously helped by being, in all likelihood,...

The Academy has announced the new class of invited members for 2014 and, as is typical, many of which are among last year's nominees, which includes Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Lupita Nyong'o and June Squibb in the Actors branch not to mention curious additions such as Josh Hutcherson, Rob Riggle and Jason Statham, but, okay. The Directors branch adds Jay and Mark Duplass along with Jean-Marc Vallee, Denis Villeneuve and Thomas Vinterberg. I didn't do an immediate tally of male to female additions or other demographics, but at first glance it seems to be a wide spread batch of new additions on all fronts. The Academy is also clearly attempting to aggressively bump up the demographics as this is the second year in a row where they have added a large number of new members, well over the average of 133 new members from 2004 to 2012. Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o of 12 Years a Slave were two of the 271 artists and industry leaders invited to become members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which determines nominations and winners at the annual Oscars. The entire list of Academy membership—which numbers about 6,000—isn’t public information so the annual invitation list is often the best indication of the artists involved in the prestigious awards process. It’s worth noting that invitations need to be accepted in order for artists to become members; some artists, like two-time Best Actor winner Sean Penn, have declined membership over the years.

Pop quiz: What do Chris Rock, Claire Denis, Eddie Vedder and Josh Hutcherson all have in common? Answer: They could all be Oscar voters very soon. The annual Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences invitation list always makes for interesting reading, shedding light on just how large and far-reaching the group's membership is -- or could be, depending on who accepts their invitations. This year, 271 individuals have been asked to join AMPAS, meaning every one of them could contribute to next year's Academy Awards balloting -- and it's as diverse a list as they've ever assembled. Think the Academy consists entirely of fusty retired white dudes? Not if recent Best Original Song nominee Pharrell Williams takes them up on their offer. Think it's all just a Hollywood insiders' game? Not if French arthouse titans Chantal Akerman and Olivier Assayas join the party. It's a list that subverts expectation at every turn.

A reminder list of works submitted will be made available with a nominations ballot to all members of the music branch, who will vote in the order of their preference for up to five scores.
Those five that receive the highest number of votes will be announced as nominees on January 16 2014.
According to the rules, to be eligible the original score must be a “substantial body of music that serves as original dramatic underscoring, and must be written specifically for the motion picture by the submitting composer.
Scores diluted by the use of tracked themes or other preexisting music, diminished in impact by the predominant use of songs, or assembled from the music of more than one composer shall not be eligible.”

Writer-director Malcolm D. Lee has re-assembled the entire nine-member cast of the original 1999 movie for this sequel.
Sequels are rampant in Hollywood, but it’s rare to see a sequel produced almost 15 years after the release of the original movie. This happens when a movie has a fan base, and filmmakers and cast members are eager to revisit an earlier opus. The Best Man was a hit in 1999, partly because it appealed to a more upscale African-American audience than Hollywood ordinarily acknowledges. Now writer-director Malcolm D. Lee has re-assembled the entire nine-member cast of the original movie for The Best Man Holiday, which is set at Christmas and has a good chance to succeed and also become a holiday perennial on TV and DVD.

Grammy-winning jazz keyboardist and producer George Duke, best known for his collaborations with fellow jazz bassist and composer Stanley Clarke and rock musician Frank Zappa, has died, his publicist said. He was 67. Mr. Duke died on Monday night in Los Angeles. Reuters reports that Mr. Duke had been suffering from chronic lymphocytic leukemia, publicist Mike Wilpizeski said. In the 1960s, Duke joined San Francisco's Half Note jazz club's house band, which was fronted by singer Al Jarreau. Later in the 1980s, George Duke and Stanley Clarke were Jazz and Pop superstars in their own solo careers. Mr Clarke and Mr. Duke had very similar vocals and styling. The musician's international breakout album was 1969's "The Jean-Luc Ponty Experience...

New York — George Duke, the Grammy-winning jazz keyboardist and producer whose sound infused acoustic jazz, electronic jazz, funk, R&B and soul in a 40-year-plus career, has died. He was 67.
A representative for Duke said the performer died Monday night in Los Angeles. Duke was being treated for chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
Duke's son, Rashid, thanked his father's fans in a statement Tuesday.
"The outpouring of love and support that we have received from my father's friends, fans and the entire music community has been overwhelming," he said. "Thank you all for your concern, prayers and support."
Duke was born in San Rafael, Calif. He appeared on a number of Frank Zappa albums and played in the Don Ellis Orchestra, Cannonball Adderley's band and with jazz musician Stanley Clarke. Duke also played keyboard on Michael Jackson's multiplatinum 1979 album, "Off the Wall."
His wife, Corine, died from cancer last year.

New York — Chick Corea took the unusual step of releasing four major recordings last year covering a wide gamut of music – everything from solo piano improvisations to a concerto for jazz quintet and chamber orchestra.
Now, the 71-year-old jazz pianist and composer is in the unusual position of competing against himself in two categories at the Feb. 10 awards show in Los Angeles.
"People in the music business say don't make too many records because they'll compete against one another," Corea said in a phone interview. "Well, it's exactly what's happening, but I'm very happy about it because what I love to do is making a lot of music."
His album "Hot House," the latest chapter in his 40-year partnership with vibraphonist Gary Burton, has three nominations – best jazz instrumental album, improvised jazz solo for the title track and instrumental composition for "Mozart Goes Dancing."

Joe Henderson always had the respect of fellow musicians and hardcore jazz fanatics, but for a long time it seemed the closest he'd get to fame was his brief stint in Blood, Sweat & Tears (years later he reminisced, in one of my favorite interviews, about how that short period was when sax companies wanted his endorsement and gave him free horns). Hardly fair considering that he spent a quarter century ranked among the top three tenor saxophonists alive, along with Rollins and Shorter. Then, almost miraculously, Verve put together a masterful production/promotion campaign that made him more famous in his last decade than he'd ever been before. Alas, emphysema took him at age 64, but he'd managed to leave an impressive legacy with nary a misstep -- he never made a bad album, and his appearance on anyone else's album was always a mark of quality. (Why is Ptah, the...

To celebrate the digitally remastered release of The Cruel Sea on 13th June, Optimum Home Entertainment have given us three copies of the film to give away on Blu-ray. The movie is directed by Charles Frend and stars Jack Hawkins, Donald Sinden and John Stratton.
The novel The Cruel Sea by Nicholas Monserrat was an unflinching portrayal of life at sea during WWII on a boat tasked with protecting convoys and seeking and destroying U-boats. A runaway success, the novel had already sold over 4 million copies in just 2 years when Ealing decided to make the film version. Filmed aboard an actual Royal Navy corvette, The Cruel Sea tells the story of the sailors aboard the Hms Compass Rose: the bonds that form between them, the daily pressures they face and their epic struggle to overcome the enemy. Nominated for a BAFTA for Best British Film, The Cruel Sea stars Jack Hawkins,...

Korn's bassist Reginald Arvizu aka Fieldy is planning to shock fans with his second solo album - the heavy metal rocker has abandoned the genre in favor of jazz fusion. The "Freak on a Leash" rocker is putting the finishing touches on "Bassically", a follow-up to his 2002 rap record "Rock'n Roll Gangster".
He tells AOL's Noisecreep, "Right now, I have 11 songs finished. I might do two more, but it's pretty much done." But Fieldy has warned fans to expect something different. He adds, "I'd say it's like a jazz fusion funk type of thing. Real new age, too. Different kinds of music."
"I've always wanted to do it. When I was younger, learning bass, I listened to a lot of bass albums, Stanley Clarke, I grew up listening to that type of stuff. I don't want people to be confused and buy it and not like it. It's not heavy...
