I’m a sucker for car chases. Not the perfunctory, last-minute “Hey, this movie needs a car chase!” variety, but the kind that comes as a result of a particular plot point wherein someone or some group has to get away from some other group. While most new car chases such as The Fast and the Furious sort are usually accomplished through CGI, I find that this sleight-of-hand fakery virtually abolishes all tension. The best ones that I have seen all did it for real through innovative and unprecedented filming techniques and excellent editing: Grand Prix (1966), Vanishing Point (1967), Bullitt (1968), The Seven-Ups (1973), The Blues Brothers (1980), The Road Warrior (1981), The Terminator (1984), F/X (1986), Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991), and The Town (2010) all have action sequences that put the full wonder of film editing on display.

Robert De Niro picks up a gun once again as a highly paid spy-mercenary-thief hired for a bit of international larceny, the robbing of a courier of some undisclosed secrets of one kind or another. Juicing up a Melville- like stoic crime fantasy with superb car stunt work puts director John Frankenheimer back in the game, with a worthy project.

Ronin: Noun, historical. A samurai who no longer serves a daimyo, or feudal lord.

On a rain-swept night in Paris, an international crack team of professional thieves assembles, summoned by a shady crime syndicate fronted by the enigmatic Deirdre (Natascha McElhone, The Devil’s Own). Their mission: to steal a heavily guarded briefcase from armed mobsters, its contents undisclosed. Sound on Sight undertook a massive project, compiling ranked lists of the most influential, unforgettable, and exciting action scenes in all of cinema. There were hundreds of nominees spread across ten different categories and a multi-week voting process from 11 of our writers. The results: 100 essential set pieces, sequences, and scenes from blockbusters to cult classics to arthouse obscurities.
Part 2 of 10: A good car chase works for completely different reasons than its bipedal counterpart. Where a foot chase is more intimate, desperate, and rough, car chases are cool, exciting, almost romantic. Here the journey overwhelms destination: tough guys (and girls) driving sleek machines at impossible speeds. And unlike foot chases, there are no real limitations on where they can go or what they can do—sometimes cars can even fly.

Piranha 3Dd promised more gore, beer, sun, and naked honeys making out under water. It mostly delivered but I wish they had sunk some of the substantial profits from the superb 2010 original (actually a remake of Joe Dante’s 1978 Jaws knockoff) into it, but this new one seemed so cheap and cheesy, blowing much of their budget on D-list celebrities that everything about it screamed “bargain basement”. Many of the fish and gore effects looked cheaply produced and rushed. I didn’t even get to see it at the theater in 3D because they released it in only a few cities and on VOD the same day.
Piranha 3Dd is set a year after the events of the earlier film 50 miles away in the small Arizona town of Merkin County. The setting is Big Wet Water Park run by sleazy David Koechner who is in cahoots with the local law...

Four new releases this week including a Broadway film adaptation, an animated film, a Nickelodeon show and Jewish baseball.
Rock of Ages: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack by Various Artists
The film Rock of Ages is based on the hit Broadway musical of the same name. The show was created using classic rock n roll music of the 1980’s. The soundtrack features twenty tracks from the film performed by the film’s cast. Several actors lend their vocal talents including Paul Giamatti, Malin Akerman, Russel Brand, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin and Mary J. Blige (though she’s actually a professional singer). The film’s two main characters are portrayed by country singer Julianne Hough and Mexican singer Diego Boneta. There are only six songs that do not feature at least one of the two. The Broadway show is said to be unlike other shows in that it is more lighthearted and fun.

Three new releases this week, though the material is not very new and unique.
Snow White and the Huntsman (Osc) by James Newton Howard
James Newton Howard returns with his second film score of 2012 (The Hunger Games was the first). Jnh’s signature style is definitely felt here, almost to the point where some tracks could be mistaken for other films. That being said, the sound does fit well with Snow White and the Huntsman. This is the darker, more action-packed of the two Snow White films released in 2012. Where Mirror, Mirror’s score is whimsical and fluffy, this one is more serious and plays to darker themes. Much of the score is calmly dramatic, but there are good action cues like “Escape from the Tower” and “Warriors on the Beach” that increases the pace. There are 19 tracks in total, all but two composed by Jnh. The others are songs...

I was actually beginning to believe Cliff Martinez's score for Drive may actually have a shot with all the love it has received in the precursor awards, but last night the Academy announced the list of 97 scores eligible for Best Original Score at the 2012 Oscars and, oops, what do you know, both Drive and Attack the Block didn't make the cut. The only other score I had on my current list of predictions for the category to not make the cut was Howard Shore's music for David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method. Why? Well, I would assume somewhere inside there the rules for requirement weren't met. As per the Academy, "To be eligible, the original score must be a substantial body of music that serves as original dramatic underscoring, and must be written specifically for the motion picture by the submitting composer. Scores diluted by the use of...

Yesterday the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences released the 97 original film scores that will running for the final five nominations for the Best Original Score category at the upcoming 84h Academy Awards. Billy Crystal will be hosting the annual awards show, which be presented on February 26, 2012. Some how I am not surprised that Attack the Block got nixed, seeing that Tron: Legacy pretty much got the same treatment last year. Glad to see that Henry Jackman’s X-Men: First Class is getting a nod, and of course Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross had to be in it. Check out the full list below.

Elia Cmiral has been hired to score the horror sequel Piranha 3Dd. The movie is directed by John Gulager who is best known for helming the Feast trilogy. Ving Rhames, Christopher Llyod and Paul Scheer are reprising their roles from last year’s original film. They are joined by new cast members Danielle Panabaker, Gary Busey, Katrina Bowden, David Koechner, Matt Bush, Chris Zylka, Megan Tandy and David Hasselhoff. The film is reportedly set in a newly opened waterpark. Marcus Dunston and Patrick Melton (Saw IV, V, VI and The Final Chapter) wrote the project’s screenplay and Mark Canton (300, Immortals), Joel Soisson (Dracula 2000) and Marc Toberoff (My Favorite Martian) are producing. Michael Wandmacher was the composer of last year’s first part of the rebooted horror series. Piranha 3Dd has originally been scheduled for a release this November, but The Weinstein Company has recently pushed back the release...

Making a low-budget horror feature that neither succumbs to nor strains to transcend its financial restrictions is harder than it appears, but the people behind Splinter make it look easy. Modest but not unambitious and put together with care on every level, it’s smart, scary and altogether satisfying creature feature of the type we don’t see enough of these days.
Director Toby Wilkins and screenwriters Kai Barry and Ian Shorr do have a bit of fun with genre expectations in the early scenes, as young lovers Seth (Paulo Costanzo) and Polly (Jill Wagner) set out for a camping trip in a rural area that we know is the hunting turf of a small, vicious creature that mauls a gas station attendant in the opening scene. The couple, however, is defeated by their tent, and they seem to be heading back to the safety of civilization when they’re...

The Deaths Of Ian Stone (part of 2007’s After Dark Horrorfest II) begins unpromisingly, joining its title character (played by Mike Vogel) in the midst of a hockey game, with pounding music and lots of fast cuts that seem to earmark this as just another flashy, trendy youth film. A little later, after Ian has suffered the first of his many demises, he spots a sinister character whose head vibrates in that Jacob’S Ladder manner which suggests the movie will end with a familiar, predictable twist. Rest assured: It doesn’t, and it’s a little more thoughtful than that flashy opener would indicate as well. Stan Winston’s latest venture as a producer doesn’t fully satisfy in the end, but it’s a diverting enough alternative to the torture and slasher flicks currently flowing out of the off-Hollywood horror scene.

Better than the first Pulse remake (but what isn’t?) but not as good as its predecessor, Pulse 3 is a disappointing but nonetheless interesting direct follow-up to the events depicted in Pulse 2.
Taking place seven years after the previous entry (which was reviewed here ), the new sequel has young heroine Justine now played as a 17-year-old by Brittany Finamore. Justine, whose parents were killed in the previous film (spoiler alert?), is living with the foster parents who rescued her during the climax of Pulse 2, in a shantytown located as far away as possible from the wireless technology that summons the spirits of the dead the way honey attracts bees. But as she’s a bored and restless teenager who longs to escape from home and go out into the world, Justine is lured via an abandoned laptop computer into a surreptitious on-line friendship with someone named Adam, who coerces...

As the eighth annual Screamfest drew to a close this past Sunday night in the heart of Hollywood, Fango attended the award ceremony held at Level 3 at Hollywood and Highland (see exclusive photos from the ceremony and fest below). With drinks flowing and merriment abounding, director Toby Wilkins’ creature feature Splinter swept the evening.
