Harry’s Law is a fantastic example how you can kill a procedural by changing its status quo.
Procedural fans generally resist changes to the status quo. Sherlock Holmes lives at 221B Baker Street in London, Columbo drives a crappy 1959 Peugot convertible, Quincy lives on a boat. Messing with these sacred cows draws nothing but howls of outrage.
There are two exceptions.

Kathy Bates can officially turn down any pending movie offers. Her TV series, Harry's Law, has been renewed for a second season by NBC.
Harry's Law centers around Harriet "Harry" Korn (Kathy Bates), a cranky former patent lawyer. She's forced to make a fresh start and ends up assembling an interesting new team; college student Malcolm Davies (Aml Ameen), legal hotshot Adam Branch (Nate Corddry), and a footwear-obsessed assistant named Jenna (Brittany Snow).
Debuting mid-season, the series started out decently with a 2.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 11.07 million viewers. While those aren't great numbers, they are significantly better than the other shows that NBC has had in the Mondays at 10pm timeslot. Unfortunately, the ratings slid downward as the season progressed and the last original episode, on April 4th, registered just a 1.4 in the demo and 7.75 million viewers.

A couple months ago, NBC premiered a new legal TV series from David E. Kelley called Harry's Law. The series started out decently in the ratings but has fallen quite a bit since then. Tonight is the season finale. Will it be back for season two or end up cancelled?
Harry's Law revolves around Harriet "Harry" Korn (Kathy Bates), a cranky former patent lawyer. She's abruptly fired from a big firm, forcing Harry to search for a fresh start. She finds it when she meets Malcolm Davies (Aml Ameen), a college student who desperately needs her help and ends up working for her. A young legal hotshot named Adam Branch (Nate Corddry) accidentally hits Harry and gives up his corporate job to join the team. With the help of Harry's footwear-obsessed assistant, Jenna (Brittany Snow), they open for business as Harriet's Law and Fine Shoes.

Last week, NBC unveiled their newest legal drama series, Harry's Law. Interestingly, this isn't a new Law & Order spin-off but rather the brainchild of David E. Kelley who created shows like ABC's Boston Legal. He also worked on NBC's popular La Law many years ago. Will this legal series last as long as those or be quickly cancelled instead?

Harry's Law, which according to the website apparently now has the tagline, "Go ahead. Make her case," premiered Monday on NBC, and it's been tough trying to follow the ratings banter that has followed. Did it make a strong showing as far as the ratings are concerned? It seems to depend on who you ask at any given moment. The numbers themselves aren't in dispute, but there is some disagreement as to what they mean.
Whether the ratings are "good" (because it's a January premiere, etc.), or "bad" (because it has Kathy Bates and David E. Kelley for crying out loud, etc.), doesn't mean a lot to me, though I find the argument interesting. The new legal dramedy, which also features Kathy Bates holding up a .44 Magnum on the website, after the big "reveal" of the pilot episode, ought to be the most discussed new show in years, because it is incomprehensibly,...

If you had a copy of the Shadow And Act 1st quarter 2011 calendar (get it Here), you’d know that tonight, at 10Pm, on NBC, Kathy Bates’s brand new legal dramedy series Harry’s Law, in which she stars as “a curmudgeonly ex-patent lawyer,” trying to make a fresh start, will make its debut.
And while she’s on this “fresh start” journey, her world collides with Malcolm Davies (played by Aml Ameen pictured left), described as “a kind-hearted college student who desperately needs Harry’s help with his pending court case, and he subsequently goes to work for her.”
A little about Aml Ameen… he’s a young British actor, and has worked in film, TV and theater. Likely his most notable role is in fellow black Brit Noel Clarke’s indie drama, Kidulthood. Aml’s first Hollywood role is in the yet-to-be released, George Lucas-produced, Red Tails.

Kathy Bates will be playing the title character in NBC's newest legal drama, Harry's Law, which will be premiering on January 17 at 10:00 p.m. Below are six sneak peeks from the pilot episode.
Kathy Bates Stars In The Premiere Of Quirky Legal Drama Series "Harry's Law"
In the premiere episode, once-successful patent attorney Harriet Korn (Kathy Bates) is fired and decides to begin anew with her own practice. With the help of her happy-go-lucky secretary, Jenna (Brittany Snow), she sets up shop in an abandoned shoe store in a rough section of Cincinnati.
Her first case is to defend Malcolm Davies (Aml Ameen), a troubled young man, facing his third drug offense. Meanwhile, up-and-coming attorney Adam Branch (Nate Corddry) joins the firm, and defends a “private security officer” after he shoots a man who is attempting to rob a laundromat.
