With the Christmas holiday hitting later this week, Tuesday is looking to be a somewhat quiet day for horror and sci-fi home media releases. Scream Factory has put together a Collector’s Edition Blu-ray for The Vampire Lovers and Tempe Video is showing some love to a trio of overlooked micro-budget genre flicks from the 1990s: Kingdom of the Vampire, Zombie Cop, and Humanoids from Atlantis. Other releases for December 21st include Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness and Roh.
Humanoids from Atlantis
Faced with a prolonged bitter Ohio winter in March 1992 and a distributor release date just weeks away, producer J.R. Bookwalter (“The Dead Next Door”) had no choice but to toss out the majority of his “Humanoids From Atlantis” screenplay and have the cast and crew make it up as they went along. The result is a complete cinematic abomination that has to be seen to be believed, but strangely...

The Dead Next Door: Ultimate Edition
• Release Date: Available Now on Blu-ray
• Written By: J.R. Bookwalter
• Directed By: J.R. Bookwalter
• Starring: Pete Ferry, Bogdan Pecic, Michael Grossi
As a young horror hound, I was inundated with stills and stories about an upcomin’ zombie bomb that was sure to make all of us Evil Dead-lovin’ psychos positively explode with gorish-glee! That flick, The Dead Next Door, never seemed to materialize. Well, flash forward four years, and ol’ Tdnd sails through a stormy sea of financial and production to reach its completion, with a gentle nudge from Sam Raimi’s wallet (Master Cylinder my arse), in 1989. Finally gore-mets were served their bloody buffet!
And what a smorgasbord it is, my fiends! We follow the adventures of a government sanctioned zombie kill squad in a walking-dead-ravaged apocalypse as they travel to Ohio...

[Update 5/5/2014 11:08am - Added Charlie Band's reply from Blu-Ray.com]
If you are reading this site, there is a chance that you attend some conventions. Whether you travel to them or they roll into your hometown, more than likely this year you will see Charlie Band. Granted, the deal he is schlepping isn’t too bad. For $18 and your credit card, you can get 3 months of the Full Moon Streaming service in addition to 3 Blu-Rays of your choice. Since I’m not a huge fan of businesses having my credit card in a recurring payment that I always forget to cancel, you can actually give the Full Moon dudes (pun intended) a $20 bill and they’ll give you the same deal without having to worry about that recharge in 3 months. Hell, I did it at Cinema Wasteland last month. I figured that 3 months of the Full Moon streaming service and three Blu-Rays – one of which including Tourist Trap – was a great deal.

Ten years ago director J.R. Bookwalter (The Dead Next Door) made a film called Deadly Stingers. Now, a decade later, Full Moon Entertainment has retitled this homage to giant insect flicks and is offering it streaming on the company's website!
Mega Scorpions stars Trent Haaga, Marcella Laasch, Sewell Whitney, Brinke Stevens, Stephen O'Mahoney, Ariauna Albright, Sarah Megan White, Lilith Stabs, Nicholas Read, and Jeff Dylan Graham.
Synopsis
In a small U.S. town toxic waste has been illegally dumped for years, causing the local scorpion population to grow into six-foot-long killers as a result. A young girl named Joey witnesses the death of fellow teenager Eric by a giant scorpion, but her elder sister Alice doesn't believe her. Neither does Sheriff Evans when he comes calling after finding the mutilated remains of Eric. As more local residents are killed by the scorpions, a group of teenage parolees becomes trapped in...

With the demise of the drive-in theater rose the behemoth home video industry – and a torch was passed from one era of low-budget directors and producers to a new batch of underfunded fringe filmmakers. These fresh faces had new technology, and a new distribution game… but a similar reckless abandon and rebellious tenacity as their b-movie forefathers.
Fright fans were introduced to a new breed of horror movies - made for tens of thousands of dollars… or thousands of dollars… or a few hundred bucks and a borrowed video camera. Unpaid amateurs / quasi-professionals made up the bulk of most casts and crews - and often, the directors and producers were quite inexperienced themselves.
Join me for a visit to the heyday of the direct-to-video, micro-budget horror movie. We’ll explore this strange new cinema of the 80s and see how it evolved through the ‘90s. (Be sure to adjust tracking for best picture quality.

Author Brian Albright brings a new angle to the well-worn path of movie books dedicated to horror films. In Regional Horror Films 1958-1990, Albright devotes an entire volume to low-budget horror (and sci-fi) movies made by independent producers and directors generally on shoestring budgets. The first section of the book contains interviews with such cult figures as Ed Adlum, Donald Barton, J.R. Bookwalter, Martin Folse, Milton Moses Ginsberg, William Grefe, Lewis Jackson, Russ Marker, Robert W. Morgan, Tom Rahner, Albert J. Salzer, Larry Stouffer and Robert Burrill. The filmmakers tell revealing and often amusing tales of how they used mind over money to create movies that, in some cases, became surprise cult hits, bringing in considerable profits. Titles covered include Last House on the Left, I Spit on Your Grave, The Evil Dead, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Night of the Living Dead and more obscure films that...

The birthing of a film can be a painful process, particularly in the world of independent filmmaking, and while truncated shooting schedules, limited budgets and location challenges conspire at times to create seemingly insurmountable hurdles, nothing proves more daunting for cast and crew alike than being subject to a producer with more mood swings than a 1940’s jazz band.
Such was the case on the set of director Charlie Vaughn’s Blood Mary 3D.
Originally slated to shoot in December of 2010, executive producer Chalmers (who previously produced the Bruce Campbell flicks Man with the Screaming Brain and Alien Apocalypse) made the choice to film Bloody Mary in 3D, with production therefore being delayed until spring while logistics were being hammered out.
Shooting over the course of a short six days earlier this month in and around an industrial complex in South Central L.A., this writer paid the production a...

Heading into its 18th year in 2011, the Chicago Underground Film Festival is the longest-running underground film festival in the world. It used to be tied with the New York Underground Film Festival — both were started in 1994 — until Nyuff closed up shop in 2008.
In 1994, the Internet wasn’t the big promotional tool it is today so neither Nyuff nor Cuff that year had a website; or, if they did, those pages have since vanished off the web. So, details about what these fests screened in their first years have been sketchy. Well, until now for Cuff.
I’m not sure how I stumbled upon it, but I recently discovered that the alternative newsweekly the Chicago Reader had posted up the entire, full lineup of the first annual Chicago Underground Film Festival.
So, I copied that info and reformatted it into the style of Bad Lit’s traditional film festival lineups, which...

Jeff Dylan Graham, the ultimate horror actor, the ultimate chameleon. You might not recognize his face and that's for good reason. You see Jeff changes up his appearance like Lindsey Lohan drinks alcohol. Jeff has appeared in his fair share of horror movies and more in likely you've seen something that he has appeared in and just didn't realize it. He has worked with special effects artists and part time director Marcus Koch several times throughout his career including a starring role in Fell. For part one of this interview we asked Jeff about his appearances in Fell, Bloodsucking Vampires, one of those countless Witchcraft films, October Moon and November Son. Here is what he had to say.
So who is Jeff Dylan Graham and what are you all about?

Robot Ninja (1989) "I am the Robot Ninja, and I kick ass!" Now, just look at the preceding line of dialogue for a minute. Read it over a couple of times, just to ensure that your poor overworked brain, which would probably rather be watching The Biggest Loser re-runs than reading yet another review of a movie you've never heard of, can fathom the staggering amount of cheesiness contained in J.R. Bookwalter's second feature film. On the Barlow Scale of Cinematic Fromage, Robot Ninja ranks somewhere in the Limburger stratum, meaning that it really reeks, and you...

Scott Phillips is a man who has his hands in many hats. He directs, writes, produces and even edits films and then on top of that he occassionally finds the time to put out a book. He also has worked in the sound department, make-up, and even acts occassionally. Is there anything this man hasn't done?!? Scott Phillips mergered erotica and horror with The Stink of Flesh for Tempe Entertainment. He then followed that with Gimme Skelter, a film produced for under $5000! He also wrote Horrorvision and Cryptz for Full Moon Pictures. With this interview, we took a look back at his career and the many hats has worn. Here is what he had to say.

For November Son (available on DVD April 14), the sequel to the gay thriller October Moon, writer/director Jason Paul Collum worked with both ends of the genre spectrum, the seasoned vet (Brinke Stevens) and the first-film newbie (Sacha Sacket).
Stevens, who reprises the role of “Nancy” in November Son, has over 100 acting credits. If you are a fan of the genre, you know Stevens even if you’ve never seen one of her films. By all accounts one of the nicest and most accommodating actresses to work with, Stevens weathered the “Girl in the Shower” storm of her early films and has come out the other side with nuanced performances in films like Mommy and October Moon. At an age when most B-movie queens fade into real estate careers, Stevens keeps racking up the roles, and she doesn’t have to take off her top to do it.
