Chicago Med hiatus: When does the show return and what should fans expect from the next new episode?
Chicago Med is still on an extended spring hiatus as the show takes a break before racing toward the season finale.
Some fans may already be upset that the One Chicago shows have taken such a long break during April, but new episodes are on the horizon.
As a reminder, two Hollywood strikes paused the production of the NBC dramas. It delayed the new seasons from premiering for many months.
When the shows finally returned in January, Chicago Med fans were reminded that Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) had left the show.
Dr. Halstead’s final episode was the Season 8 finale, where he quit working at the hospital and traveled to Seattle. When he got off the plane, he was greeted by Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) and her daughter.
Several new doctors have joined the fold on the Chicago Med cast this season, adding some freshness to the show.

It’s been a long wait for NBC’s Chicago Med to return with its 9th Season but with the premiere less than a week away (January 17), Deadline has some juicy nuggets to tease about the show’s return.
In the Season 8 finale, the medical drama said goodbye to Day 1-er Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) who handed in his resignation after finding himself more and more unsettled with the new changes implemented at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center following Jack Dayton’s purchase of the hospital. His main concern was Dayton’s insistence on using the O.R. 2.0. even after a machine error caused the death of a patient and could’ve also claimed Dayton’s life.
Dayton’s live surgery for investors cost him nearly all his money after showing the high-tech machine wasn’t ready for showtime. So to stay afloat financially, Dayton sells the hospital.

There's never a dull moment on Chicago Med, but the NBC drama will open its doors to someone with ties to one of the show's longest-serving cast members.
TVLine reports that the series is eyeing "an early thirtysomething male Emergency Department doctor."
The mystery individual will have a connection with Dr. Charles (played by Oliver Platt).
Initially, the new character will be a recurring player, but as we've seen in the past, people tend to get upgraded to series regular status if they resonate with viewers.
The unnamed new addition "comes from a troubled background, which led him to cross paths with Dr. Charles when he was growing up."
Like other long-running series, Chicago Med has lost its fair share of cast members throughout the years, but Chicago Med Season 8 wrote out many ongoing cast members.

[This story contains spoilers for “Does One Door Close and Another One Open?,” the season eight finale of Chicago Med.]
Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) has been chafing under newly profit-centered management of the Gaffney Chicago Medical Center since Jack Dayton (Sasha Roiz) took control of the hospital. The season eight finale of Chicago Med brought his frustration to a head, when Dayton insisted on going through with a surgery assisted by his Or 2.0 system, under protest by Dr. Crockett Marcel (Dominic Rains).
The routine hernia surgery goes fine — no thanks to 2.0, which shows a complication that’s not there. Halstead admits to Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) that he manipulated 2.0 to produce a bad result — and protects Dr. Song (T.V. Carpio), who hacked the system — and hands in his resignation letter. “What are we going to do without you?” Goodwin asks him.
The law of unintended consequences, however, might catch up to the rest of the staff at Med: Dayton tells Goodwin that the botched public demonstration of 2.0 has wrecked him financially,...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Chicago Med Season 8 finale “Does One Door Close and Another One Open?”] The promo for the Chicago Med Season 8 finale teased “someone will go,” but how? Does Maggie (Marlyne Barrett) take a new job after meeting with a recruiter? Does Dean (Steven Weber) die before he can get the kidney he needs, from his son Sean (Luigi Sottile)? Does someone else decide it’s time to leave the hospital, because of the recent changes or another reason? The finale foreshadows all of these possibilities. Just as Dayton (Sasha Roiz) is ready to show off what the new Or can do with his own hernia repair, Will (Nick Gehlfuss) and Grace (TV Carpio) discover the system created a lesion as a misguided attempt to help him with a patient who died. Dayton tries to brush off Marcel’s (Dominic Rains) concerns at first, then tells him he trusts him (and doesn...

NBC’s “Chicago Med” raked in 6.6 million average viewers for the departing episode of Asjha Cooper, who played Dr. Vanessa Taylor for two seasons and appeared on 29 episodes of the Dick Wolf show.
In a critical episode for the character, who had earlier been revealed as Maggie’s (Marlyne Barrett) daughter who she’d given up for adoption, Vanessa made the decision to leave her post as a doctor at the hospital for an opportunity to travel to the Philippines and help others.
“Chicago Med” has previously seen total viewership figures in the high 6 million range, though viewership had declined last week due to airings of reruns and competition for the 8 p.m. time slot from CBS’ “Survivor.”
Here’s how primetime broke down across the major broadcast networks:

NBC’s Chicago Med is saying goodbye to Asjha Cooper who played Dr. Vanessa Taylor for two seasons.
Vanessa arrived at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center in search of a job opportunity but she found so much more. Mainly, she reconnected with her birth mother Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett) whom she told in tonight’s episode about her plans to take a new job in the Philippines. She’s found her calling.
When viewers last saw Vanessa, she and Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) were busted for buying drugs that were in short supply at the hospital illegally. This season, Chicago Med has been struggling with low supplies and desperate times call for desperate measures. With their hearts in the right place, the duo avoided harsher punishment but helped to shed a light on the lengths they were willing to go for their patients. Lesson learned.
